One of the lovely parts of Manzanita is how quiet it is compared to some of the larger cities on the coast. But, even being a year round visitor, there are still some things that take getting used to like the limited hours for many restaurants. Even in the high season, the San Dune Pub is only open a few days a week and only during dinner hours. So, no lunch visits or late night drinking sessions. Also, no children allowed, just fur babies on the back patio. The best time to experience the San Dune is on a late summer afternoon or early evening on the back patio. It is a nice place to hang out sheltered from the traffic on Laneda and any strong wind coming off the beach. I've only ordered burgers and it hits the spot served on a brioche bun with a generous side of fries or tots. A funny quirk about the menu is that all of the cheeseburgers are the same price (currently $18). So whether you want a plain cheeseburger or the more extravagant Chipotle Bacon Chicken Burger, it is the same price. You can upgrade the side if you prefer salad or chowder. There are three large screens inside, so it is a place where you can watch a game, but there is also a wall with video poker machines that have the sound turned on, which is quite annoying. Personally, I'd turn left as you enter and stick to the quieter side of the dining space. read more

It's been 8 years since my initial review, and we are staying in Manazita so time for an update! The place is still pretty rustic, but it is clean. They have a nice selection of tap beers, and we ordered a couple of Pfriem (sp?) pints which were delivered promptly. They hit the spot! The menu is still pretty basic, their kitchen looks pretty tiny which kinda constrains what they can do. I opted for the oyster Po Boy and my wife had the fish burger. They were delivered pretty quickly, but we got there right after they opened so I'd expect the kitchen to not be slammed yet. The fries were nice and crispy but lacked salt, but a few shakes from the salt shaker fixed that. I had an ample quantity of oysters, but the sandwich lacked any of the traditional po boy ingredients. They basically took the oyster basket and put the slaw and oysters on a hoagie bun. It was good, but not great. Our waitress was friendly and helpful, no issues with service. They have a nice cocktail menu, next time I stop in I'll have to try their Negroni! Walked into this bar on August 11. I remember the date bc I had just found out a dear friend had died. I needed a drink. But the place had decided to close early. When I walked in most of the tables were full of people eating and drinking. When I said hey can I have a drink I just found out my friend died, the reply was we are closed. And this from a bartender I knew and had given gifts to. Totally heartless. Dont patronize this unfriendly place. Mediocre food, children not allowed, no pool table or pinball, just video poker. Went in one night for the driest burger I've ever had in my life. No other bar options so I went back. Called ahead to ask if I could get takeout and was told yes over the phone. Showed up and asked to get takeout and immediately the owner became very aggressive, accusing me of lying about calling, laughing in my face, getting in my personal space. My friend and I are 5'5" women and for some reason two grown adult men nearly put hands on us for asking about takeout? A simple "no" would've sufficed. If could give no stars I would. From entering, the staff seemed like they hated being there and us even entering the establishment. Music on the outside patio was absolutely blaring that it was impossible to hold a conversation. Once the waitress appeared, she was visibly annoyed that we didn't want to order food immediately. Then, when she brought the drinks, she spilled some on one of our group and and the waitress made an off hand comment of "oh, did I spill?" We requested to move tables as the music was so loud and this was treated like an end of the world situation by her. Overall, a terrible experience which we ended up chugging our beers and getting out ASAP. Don't waste your time here. They quote it as the "quintessential place to be in Manzanita" I would say it's the quintessential place to avoid. Go to Big Wave Cafe off 101 and actually be treated like a person. read more

Came in for a burger and beer. They had different sports on the TVs. So something for everyone. Service was excellent. I had four very friendly people help me out. Everyone helps each other out which is great to see. They were all friends which added to the upbeat atmosphere. I ordered a cheeseburger and upgraded to the tots. First, the tots were cooked perfectly. They came with a ranch sauce which was just ok. Don't know what it was, but didn't have that blast of flavor I was expecting from ranch. The cheeseburger was excellent. They didn't ask how I wanted cooked, but it didn't matter cause it was perfect. Lots of good stuff on the burger (lettuce onions pickles tomato). There was a sauce on it which I couldn't figure out what it was. I ordered an IPA which turned into two. Very cold, very good. So here is the bonus part. I sat at the bar and while waiting I thought I'd throw a $20 into the video Lotto next to me. First spin got me a bonus which turned into $98. One of only two bars in this cool little beach town. Excellent vibe, plenty of seating, decent food selection, and better than average beer list. Prices are fair and service is friendly. They checked on us multiple times and apologized when they were absent during a small stretch. The oysters were average, but they'll do coupled with alcohol. The tots were ample, but replacing tasteless and boring dark Tilamook Dark Yellow Cheddar with sharp White Cheddar or anything more interesting would give them a taste boost. I have been eating food from the sand dune for 36 years(probably longer, I just can't remember). I use to get food from the take out window when I was to young to go in and then once I could finally enter those swinging doors I made it a stop every time I'm in town! I've had many iterations of their food but it always satisfies the belly. They have really upgraded the back patio with two large tents to cover it and makes for a great spot in the evening to sit out slide and enjoy some food and a drink! There burger are good but their fried oyster are where it's at! I hope someday they can increase their hours again, but for the time being, I'll still make it in when I'm in town and suggest you do too! Food tasted pretty good, but arrived a bit more than an hour after we sat and ordered. We were close to asking for the bill and leaving when it finally came out. Very busy Friday night here but they were able to squeeze us in. Fun vibe and broad pub menu. Something for everyone here especially if you like fried food. I opted for the house salad with prawns and a salmon chowder. Good. The best dish was the fish and chips. They also have sweet potatoes fries for those of a gluten free palate. I was super excited to bring some friends here, but ended up leaving unsatisfied this time around. I've been to this place a hand full of times over the years and I always go for the fish tacos. This was the first time that I've been seriously disappointed with the service and the food. The fish tacos are a fan favorite as you can tell from everyone's pictures! But this time around the fish was tasteless(I get mine grilled) over cooked and dry, corn tortillas were cold, served straight from the pack, and the slaw was overly sweet. There sauces are always on point though! Comes with a cilantro lime crema and chipotle sauce! The service was pretty mediocre. They had a band coming on at 8 and we were in around 6:30 when it was starting to pick up. From what it looked like there was only one server on the floor and he was clearly falling behind with the amount of people in his section. At the end of our meal I asked if he could split the bill and his response was "I'll try my best" and seemed annoyed that we weren't doing one check. The San Dune is a lively spot in downtown Manzanita that has been around for decades. Pre COVID you might find locals and visitors alike enjoying a beer and enjoying live music on a Saturday night. They have a lovely outdoor patio and decent food although a little on the pricey side ($14 house salad..).
