Nice space with the fire table. It's a little off the street so everyone isn't in your business The drinks from the bar were not very good. Also the server was not very knowledgeable of the food or the drinks. We got some duck tacos on special. They were amazing. Ok. Things are looking up. Then the showstopper was the meat and cheese board. So beautiful and well explained and lots of handmade wares on. One of the best, if not the best, board I've had. Top notch. So why the bad reviews. We looked online and the new owners seemed to have a similar menu, so we arranged to meet family here on a recent Saturday in August. On their website, Google, and Yelp, the summer hours were listed as 2 to 9, so we arranged to meet at 4:15. When we arrived, the sign on the door said they would open at "5-ish." Needless to say, we did not wait around. I don't understand not being open a little earlier in the afternoon during the summer tourist season. The wine bar up the street was doing a lively business. Wow! I am so glad we stumbled upon this place. We come to this area 2 or 3 times a year and we really just started liking the Manzanita Lighthouse as our go to spot. Then they closed. We really liked their pizza and heard the owners also owned the Rusty moose, so we went to check it out. The food was very good. Everything was high quality and tasted great. I have to first commend the absolutely outstanding service that my party and I received at Rusty Moose. We had 3 dogs with us and the staff was welcoming and accommodating. In addition to the water bowls provided at the restaurant they brought out a couple dog beds for our pups and offered "pup cups" with salami and whip cream for our furry babies as well. The Rusty Moose Old fashion was delicious and the cheese board and beet, goat cheese, arugula salad we ordered were so good. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the area. We came to MacGregors at 4:30 on Friday evening. We were able to be seated outside right away, but it does fill up quite fast, so if you want to come, come as early as you can! We were very cozy the entire time. We learned that there recently was a change in ownership, so their online menu is out of date, but they provided us with current menus. I really loved their Manzanita pretzel-it was so chewy and flaky, and the sauces it came with were tasty (a mustard and a white cheddar sauce). The only bone I have to pick here is that it is served with little pickled peppers. I loved the addition of these personally! However, I think any additions should be specified in the menu. We have a friend with a pepper allergy who was unable to try the pretzel because we found out about these upon presentation. Their crème brûlée cheesecake was delightful-the caramel sauce was my favorite part of this. I enjoyed two cocktails while here and would order both of these again: Smoky Bramble and Lavender-this was outstanding. I loved the combination of mezcal with the lavender, and they balanced well. I think out of the cocktail list, this one was the most unique. The Fig and Ginger-this was delicious and the ginger did not overpower the fig. The lime gives this a bright aftertaste. You could see some of the fig seeds at the bottom of the glass. This was outstanding. Their service was a little slower than their usual, but I appreciate that they ensured the quality of their drinks and food before serving them to us, and our server was wonderful. We cannot say enough great things about this place. The decor is absolutely wonderful! Rusty and Moose were the owners dogs and they dedicated the business to them. There is a sweet memorial wall of all their previous dogs and one of the drinks is named after Sweet Samantha. The cocktails were *incredible* and holy smokes the salmon that we added to the cheese board was so good!!! One of us is gluten free and they had really good gluten free crackers to sub in. The customer service is horrible! We have been coming to Manzanita for a number of years. Every year we have hit up this establishment. Before it changed owners we had a fabulous time every time. Once it changed ownership, everything went downhill. We have continued to try to support this small business through their horrible customer service, but this year we decided we're not gonna wait around to pay for bad service. We made this decision after: 1) standing in line for 10+ minutes before being acknowledged, 2) sitting at a table for 15+ minutes with no acknowledgment (ZERO), and 3) watching someone - who showed up after us - come inside from outdoor seating to get service and then being served before us. By far the best fondue we have ever had. We also ordered the lobster bisque and Mac and cheese. Everything was great but the fondue was the star of the show! They also recommended trying their homemade custom whiskey drink called Robert the Bruce and we absolutely loved that too! I hate leaving bad reviews. I love building businesses up, not tearing them down but I regret not leaving a five star review when this place was MacGregor's. Tonight fell short. We were greeted by the waitress whom immediately and very bluntly told us, "We are filled to brim" and when she took our drink order, "It will be a long time until your drinks are ready". As we sat and waited for our drinks we watched this person literally turned away at least 10 potential costumers. Yes, the place was busy, but isn't that what a business wants? At least be hospitable. Out of four drinks, one showed up 20 minutes after ordering. Totally fine. The other three...45 minutes after ordering. She warned us. We are very patient people whom have been in the food service industry ourselves. We ordered no food. We were there for 2.5 hours and were able to have two drinks. We literally had to ask to order our second round and this was after the bar slowed down. The two people running this place this evening did not know how to smoothly operate a cocktail bar. We saw people getting up and leaving. Why was the bartender not making drinks by the table/order? Why wasn't the waitress circling back to ask patrons if they would like anything else? Being made to feel like the customers are putting you out isn't good for business. We wanted to show our family what an amazing place this was in the past. Unfortunately it's no longer that. We had amazing service down the sidewalk at Sand Dune though. It was like a warm, welcoming hug compared to our experience here. read more

My wife and I (and our dogs!) have been coming to Manzanita for many years. We love the cozy feel, especially in the shoulder seasons; the crowds, drawn by the expansive beaches, tend to be far smaller, the weather is a bit more temperamental, but the essence of the small Oregon coastal town is ever present. The somewhat unfortunate by-product of this seasonality is that a small business can easily find itself in a bit of a struggle, trying to make it through lean periods. During our years of visits, we've seen other shops and restaurants come and go, and especially lamented when a good place to grab a bite had to close up. So we were both so pleased to see that the old MacGregor's Whiskey Bar is under new (local!) management and is now the Rusty Moose. The cocktails are excellent, the small plates and bites are equally delicious, and the new owners Megan and Jay are eagerly and lovingly serving up terrific fare. Given the unofficial Manzanita theme of being receptive to dogs of all sorts, we loved seeing the pictures and memories of pups on the walls as well. I see other reviews have mentioned wait times or unexpected closures; as the sign clearly states on the door, one should not expect immediate service... this is not a dash in, dash out experience. Staffing can be minimal. When we went, Megan was seating newcomers, taking orders, making drinks, and serving them, all with a cheerful smile and wry apology for the potential wait. We settled in, were given an amuse-bouche, enjoyed our drinks, and shared one of the charcuterie boards. Locals were warmly greeted, people were laughing and smiling... it was a wonderful moment to relax in a snug and charming spot. read more

I have "not so secretly" been wanting to visit this place for awhile now, but the last few times I've been to the coast I haven't had the opportunity for one reason or another. But this weekend my husband and I came down to Manzanita for a quick trip from Portland, and it was quite literally right down the street from where we were staying, so now I finally had my perfect opportunity. We arrived here around 5:00 on a Saturday, and while the tables were already starting to fill up, we were able to get seated right away, which was nice for such a popular spot. After being seated, we were greeted at our table by the owner, Chip MacGregor, who proceeded to answer any questions we had about the items on the menu and to take our drink order. Then Chip himself came back with our drinks and engaged in conversation with us while we waited for our food. All I can say is wow, what a personable guy. It's easy to see why his business has done so well. This is the kind of owner who's establishment you want to visit again and again and who's employees probably love coming to work every day because you can tell how much he cares. As for the drinks and the food - perfection! First of all, the presentation on everything is spot on! Each item looks like a work of art, and is almost too pretty to eat... I said almost. We ordered the Mac's Old Fashioned and the Kentucky Peach, which were both equally yummy and oh so smooth. We also tried a taster of the Jameson Cooper's Croze since we're big Jameson fans but had never had that one before. For dinner/snacks, we had a pastie, the Manzanita pretzel (the cheese sauce is to die for), the lobster bisque and the mac and cheese. All were super tasty, but my favorite was probably the mac and cheese, which was some of the best I've ever had (and this southern girl has had her fair share of mac and cheese over the years, let me tell you). When we were getting ready to leave, Chip came back out and brought us each a sample of some amaretto type liquor that his family makes as an after dinner drink, and it was AMAZING! Not overly sweet like regular amaretto is. Just subtle hints. If I could buy it bottled, I would. Like I said before, he just seems like an all around good guy. Final thoughts? This is definitely a stop worth making if you're visiting the coast anywhere near Manzanita or you can visit their other location in Cannon Beach. Especially if you're a whiskey or bourbon drinker, because they have everything you could possibly think of, and then some. The service is fantastic and the food is delicious too. Well done, Chip! I hope your business continues to grow and thrive throughout the years. Never lose that personal touch. And we will definitely be back the next time we're in Manzanita. In cruising through the reviews of local food spots (with one other individual), we were looking for a spot to stop to grab a bite to eat and then cruise down to the beach after. We found MacGregor's bar and given the reviews decided to try it. Walking into what feels like a nice local bar, your greeted by a wall of whiskey that rivals most speakeasy style bars I've ever been to. What caught my eye first is that they had Weller's Green, Red, Blue and Black in various spots on the shelf. Our server, Molly, greeted us and sat us down and we ordered drinks and some food. While the individual with me was NOT a whiskey fan in the slightest there were a number of drinks available to someone that prefers another liquor to sip or fancy cocktails such as a Mango Margarita with a Chile salt rim. In short the drinks were fantastic and worth a visit anytime, even if you are not hungry. I'm a skeptic at heart and we were getting dangerously close to the too good to be true stage. The veggie. and lamb pot pie was highly recommended so I was talked into giving it a try. To say it was delicious might be an understatement of the decade. The crust was firmly cooked throughout the pie but still flakey and salty as you would want it. The Lamb was sweet and soft while the veggies still somehow managed to be steamed but have a pop to the exterior before turning into that wonderful stew combination. The only negative thing I could possibly say about this pot pie is that it ended entirely too early and I wanted another one as soon as I finished. Absolutely delightful. But all of this really doesn't hold a candle to the people that run this bar. The staff could not have been sweeter and they did such a great job catering to all of their guests without being overburdening. By the end of the meal you felt as if you had taken on new friends and when you finish your meal you have forgotten that you had just spent hours at a bar you meant to just cruise through at a stopping point. Absolutely would visit this location again, and look forward to my next trip to the coast for this venue specifically. read more
