I couldn't tie my shoes, but I could sit in that theater and stare at that big glowing screen like it was the second coming of Hollywood. I remember walking in one time and the screen was down, sports blasting on that big canvas like God intended. That's how you use a theater, folks. You don't buy a cowboy hat to hang it on the wall you wear it. Same principle. Now listen, they've fixed up the bathrooms . Nobody wants to change "historic" restrooms. Some things should stay nostalgic. Some things should not. The food? On point. Service? Solid. Decor? Still has that old-school charm that makes you feel like you're part of something bigger than just lunch and a beer. But here's where I tilt my glass and squint a little. Last few times we've gone in, that big beautiful screen is nowhere to be seen. Instead, we're staring at giant stainless steel beer kegs stretched across the back like industrial art. Not everybody came to admire a 10-foot aluminum torpedo. Drop the screen, man. Let it shine. It's a theater. If I wanted to stare at storage containers, I'd tour a shipping yard. And here's the kicker we walked in at lunch, only a couple folks inside. By the time we left? Elbow to elbow. Packed out. The business is hopping. Which tells me you're doing a lot right. I gather their main biz was brewing craft beer for a very small clientele of businesses and the "saloon" was mostly a side hustle to help pay the rent. So I see they moved into new digs down at the marina. I won't take off any stars for the following since this seems to be their new business model: Offering uber-expensive, skimpy portions of not especially tasty food targeted to yuppies who have more money than brains. Suffice to say that you won't see many Bikers hanging out here. The good: Their patio has a nice river view and a pleasant breeze. Sitting out there enjoying a cold one on a hot Summer day is very pleasant. And during the Fall too so long as it's not raining. People complain about the lack of parking which is not an issue when you show up on a motorcycle. But there are LOTS of places to park although you may have to walk a few yards... you poor darlings. Staff is less than amazing but they are always courteous towards me. I suppose I am no more their dream customer than they are my dream hangout. But Bikers tend to be very generous tippers so they might want to keep that in mind. There's one long-established watering hole in Cathlamet but it's a dark, indoor venue. I like it there and it's more of a dive bar with very good food. The thing about Cathlamet is that if you are just an occasional visitor you have many options of where to stop for a meal and/or drink and never get bored. There's also a few good places at the other end of the ferry ride in Westport, Oregon. Hard to say how long RM38 will stay in business. I'm actually surprised that they lasted in their original location for so long considering that they were only open for a few hours during the weekend. It would be great if they quit pretending to be an upscale eatery and instead focused on providing a good value, tasty, filling meal for the money. Like any toddler, he made a mess, but I was mindful of it and cleaned up after him when asked. About 15-20 minutes later, I noticed the entire toy bin had been removed. When I asked the staff member (manager?) why, her response was curt and dismissive--essentially saying she was tired of cleaning up after kids. She even said she "had kids too," but the tone felt more like scolding than understanding. I explained that we come to places like this because they advertise themselves as family-friendly. Instead of hospitality, we were made to feel like a burden, as though children weren't actually welcome. The worst part was overhearing her continue to talk about us to others while we were still there. That crossed the line from unprofessional to just plain rude. We ended up leaving and taking our business elsewhere. For parents constantly searching for places to enjoy a beer while their kids have space to play, I can confidently say Heater Allen is not it. If you don't want children there, don't advertise as kid-friendly--it's misleading and creates an experience that feels hostile for families.
