I'll start this review off by saying that I love Cathlamet. It's a quaint little historic town with a rich history and really nice people. I've been visiting here a dozen times a year for four decades. There are a few eateries here. Many seem to come and go although there are a couple that have survived the test of time. RM38 is a newcomer... used to be in a small building with VERY limited hours. I gather their main biz was brewing craft beer for a very small clientele of businesses and the "saloon" was mostly a side hustle to help pay the rent. So I see they moved into new digs down at the marina. I won't take off any stars for the following since this seems to be their new business model: Offering uber-expensive, skimpy portions of not especially tasty food targeted to yuppies who have more money than brains. Suffice to say that you won't see many Bikers hanging out here. The good: Their patio has a nice river view and a pleasant breeze. Sitting out there enjoying a cold one on a hot Summer day is very pleasant. And during the Fall too so long as it's not raining. People complain about the lack of parking which is not an issue when you show up on a motorcycle. But there are LOTS of places to park although you may have to walk a few yards... you poor darlings. Staff is less than amazing but they are always courteous towards me. I suppose I am no more their dream customer than they are my dream hangout. But Bikers tend to be very generous tippers so they might want to keep that in mind. There's one long-established watering hole in Cathlamet but it's a dark, indoor venue. I like it there and it's more of a dive bar with very good food. The thing about Cathlamet is that if you are just an occasional visitor you have many options of where to stop for a meal and/or drink and never get bored. There's also a few good places at the other end of the ferry ride in Westport, Oregon. Hard to say how long RM38 will stay in business. I'm actually surprised that they lasted in their original location for so long considering that they were only open for a few hours during the weekend. It would be great if they quit pretending to be an upscale eatery and instead focused on providing a good value, tasty, filling meal for the money. Again, no minus stars for that but until new management comes along and makes some changes it will just be a pint or two for me and i'm on my way. Of course as always YMMV. read more

I'm pretty sure that one's experience here is completely correlated with: * How busy it is when you visit * Season of the year in which you visit * Specific weather on the day you visit The high points: * GREAT views of the river * Ample selection of non-alcoholic beverages * Long ramp at the entrance to ensure accessibility The not-so-great points: * Parking is TERRIBLE (it is on a marina, and most spots are occupied by boaters) * SLOW service (I mean, REALLY slow service - stood in line for almost 10 minutes to purchase a beverage for a friend playing the band that evening) * Really not well-suited for seeing bands perform (roughly 1/3 of the dining room has visibility of the performers, and most of that area is filled with large tables, so if you're solo, you're basically relegated to the "probably in violation of fire code" tiny periphery bar seats with TINY bar stools behind diners at previously-mentioned tables. To put it into perspective, when I wanted to leave my bar seat, I had to ask FOUR people (two at bar stools, two in chairs at the table) to make way, and all four had to get out of their seats, push them under the table or bar, and walk out into the main dining area to let me pass (and no, I'm not obese). If you're just looking to take in the view, and maybe grab some Italian food (from the "Salt and Tomato" restaurant in the same building) and a beverage on a very non-busy Spring or Summer day with nice weather, you'll probably like River Mile 38 brewing just fine. If you come during a busty time with poor weather, your experience will probably be like mine. One really cool thing, though, was the "truncated cone" shape of the ice. Super disappointed. Love the venue that why we came back. Love their outside porch overlooking the River. They added a food menu - pasta at $30 a plate. I think expensive. Especially when the pasta is undercooked on both our plates. Rigatoni and bucatini. One meatball on the rigatoni. Although I had 10 clamshells I ate 6 clams and 3 shrimp. Beer is ok. They have wine cider and seltzer and good drink options/selection. The staff today was non personality. Maybe tired? Corrected me on annunciation of bucatini. Didn't ask if we like our meal just if we were done. Any which way. Too expensive especially for undercooked food lack of protein and lack luster order at the bar service. Won't be coming back nor recommending. read more

Watching Eagles fish on the Columbia River while eating oysters and drinking great craft beer will be a core memory from this trip. Service and food are top notch and I can't say enough about the location. My only regret is I live on the east coast and can't visit more often. Your regret will be that you did not visit. read more

Sometimes you walk into a place, and by the time you've looked around, you've picked up on a great vibe and know you're in for a good time. Such was my experience at River Mile 38 Brewing. I walked in and immediately sensed that this was a comfortable, happy pub. You could see that the regulars/locals were friendly and enjoyed each other, the bartender, and the brews. I bought two pints, first the IPA (Aye Aye), which was hoppy yet well-balanced, and delicious. Christina served me several samples to help me decide my second pint, which ended up being the Crafted IPA. Which was also delish, and had the added benefit of having a lower ABV (alcohol by volume) -- important for anyone having multiple beverages. The bartender, Christina, was amazing, full of positive energy, seemingly very popular with the regulars, and she helped make the visit truly memorable. All in all, this place check all the boxes from start to finish. I look forward to returning to this area and will make sure I visit play this brewpub again. read more

I have been wanting to go to River Mile 38 Brewing Co. ( formerly Drop Anchor Brewery) for a while. The reason why I haven't been here sooner is that it is kind of in a remote location. The set up isn't too bad and the location is pleasant. We were here when it was dark but it looks like there cold be a very pleasant view here to enjoy during the day. The beer is decent. I had the Six Spot Export Lager which was pretty good and Steve had the Scarlet Peach Ale but felt that it was a little too sweet. They have an impressive swag inventory and I liked the t-shirts with the mermaid logo on them but there is not a wide range of sizes to pick from. so many shirts either came in small or XXL. I managed to find a different shirt that I liked in XL but they could stand to replenish all of their sizes more and perhaps have it organized a bit differently because I was digging through all those shirts for quite a while. The staff here is very friendly and they bring a small town feel to the place and the other customers bring that same vibe here as well. I'm guessing a fair amount of them are locals and in that aspect it was refreshing. read more

The town isn't really touristy and the customers here are mostly locals but everyone was friendly enough and they are more than fine with folks bringing their dogs. I wouldn't count on eating food from here. It's just snacks like trail mix but you can get Mexican food at the cart nearby or pizza up the hill and eat it there while enjoying a shandy. read more

A wonderful stop on our traveling brewery tour. Very isolated but pleasant drive back to Beaverton via Astoria, Seaview, Cathlemet, Longview, Portland...Yeah...long trip! Ironically, this brewery was the reason behind it all! Only open 8 hours a week and rocking the locals only vibe, we found this place to be extremely friendly and warm...especially on a cold rainy night! Great Beer! Bring your own food (which is awesome if you swing by Lulu's Burger Shack first!) I generally like my beers good and dark but their Broken Hose might be the best beer I've ever consumed! I'm going to have to find it in Portland...our start making more trips to Cathlemet! read more

Our experience was exclusively based on a double flight. I can't complain. They ran out of glasses and we had to wait for them to get cleaned. It was packed though. Time flew by as we were having fun. There was this great gentleman playing guitar. He was not Carlos Santana or Bruno Mars or Dave Grohl. But he was unique, fun and had his own style! The atmosphere was great. The beer was fine. I got the canned quart of Aye Aye IPA. It was DELICIOUS. Being from Portland, I am a big IPA lover. I like an aromatic, balanced IPA. this is the Aye Aye IPA. The servers were great and very friendly. Haley was really nice. Shout out to you. Thanks to you and your coworker. You took care of us. This is a great spot. A great mix of locals and out of town campers and kayakers. The bummer is that they are closed at 9pm but I can understand. Come to Cathlamet, stop by at this great spot. Have a couple flights and try all the beers. Not adventurous? Drink the Aye Aye IPA and walk back to the yurt. read more

Great beer at a great site: many selections for a 1 year old brewery, & those we sampled are very good! Loved the Tug Boat stout, and the Porter, and the IPA. Friendly relaxed atmosphere right above the marina, which is a fine place for summer camping... Your only regret will be that this microbrewery has limited hours... Friday & Saturday are the official days, but sometimes they do open for a few Sunday afternoon hours on holiday weekends... We got lucky & received VIP treatment from one of the 8 brewmeisters on a very quiet Sunday! read more

I love stumbling upon random places in small towns that I may never have thought of going to in the first place! I came to Cathlamet for a weekend stay after being invited by a couple friends. We had an airbnb on Pugget Island and drove over to explore downtown. Cathlamet is a very small but very charming town settled right along the Columbia River. While exploring we drove down to the marina and saw BREWERY written in big letters. The sun was setting so we thought what the hell, let's go hang out and have a beer! When you walk in you notice the nautical decor from maps on the ceiling to the "Crows Nest" right next to the big brewing equipment. They are only open on Friday and Saturday but lucky for us there was live music from local band The DownHill Billies. I love that this place allows dogs inside! We were helped at the bar by the nicest woman who let us taste some beer and ciders while we decided on what we wanted. I had a cider followed by their amber ale. Both were great and the rest of my group was happy with their choices as well. the prices are also very reasonable. They don't serve food but they offer some bar snacks for $1 and you can even order from the pizza/burger place one block away who will deliver it right to the brewery. We could tell that this was the local hang out spot because it had that "where everybody knows your name" feeling. After a couple hours we headed out but if we are ever in this part of Washington we will definitely come back and stop in for a drink! read more

One of our stops on the SW Washington brew passport. Such a beautiful setting!!!! Very friendly staff and helpful. Accepts doggies inside and out. Very casual. The view of the Marina, Columbia River and the scenery was relaxing. Outside patio and you can watch the weather roll in from the coast all day long. Nice big taster tray and beer assortment. No food onsite, but order from Sharon's pizza just up the road, the pizza is the bomb!!!! And they will deliver it to you at the brewery, complete with plates, forks, knives and napkins, hot peppers and parmesan. The brewery opened at 4 pm, so we went to Longview to try two other breweries and then booked a stay at the Super 8 in Kelso, WA, so we wouldn't have to drive home to Portland, OR. And this little town is only 35 minute drive from Kelso/Longview. read more

i spent years in europe, several of them in bavaria in the town (regensburg) where thurn und taxis- and kneitinger beer are brewed. i've also been to the hofbrauhaus (in munich). the beer produced by the guys at drop anchor brewery compares favorably! i recommend you try drinking it at barely below room temperature as the experts in germany do to get the true flavor. way to go guys!! read more
