Cold weather calls for comfort food! I know there's been quite the buzz around Ringo Curry, but we were surprisingly seated quickly for a late lunch on a Saturday. The wait is more for the food, which is made to order and took a bit to come out (approx. 30min+). We both had the Pork Cutlet Omelet Curry, and thought the taste and texture of the katsu and curry was great. Sizes come in regular or large, with large having more rice, egg and curry. The restaurant itself is bright with tons of natural lighting, and has space to accommodate larger groups. I visited Ringo Curry as the 6th restaurant on my quest to find the best tonkatsu curry in and around Seattle. This place certainly seems to be popular; I stopped by on a Tuesday right when they opened and there were already two parties ahead of me. By the time noon rolled around, the restaurant only had one open table left. All other tables, 11 of them, were taken care of by a single overwhelmed waitress. She was trying her best but that many tables seems to be a bit too much for one person. At any rate, I was the first to place my order and the food came out in about ten minutes. Pork Cutlet Curry, Regular, Level 2 Spice ($16.95) - First off, they don't serve curry with chopsticks and instead only provide a fork and spoon, which I found kind of strange. I think the owners are Southeast Asian, so that might be the reason? At any rate, starting with the tonkatsu - there's a thicker layer of panko on the exterior, giving a good flaky, but light, crisp. It separates from the meat pretty easily in an entire layer. I feel like they don't pat the pork dry enough, which helps to explain the separation and also results in the interior breading becoming a little soggy. The pork is salted and peppered, not overly much, but enough to enhance and flavor the meat. The pork chop seems to be rosu (loin) cut, still exhibiting some of the membranous tissue on one side, but the fat is completely trimmed off. Unfortunately, the katsu is fried too long, resulting in pork that's a little dry and tough, as evidenced by the very visible meat fibers along all the cuts. I wouldn't say this is a bad tonkatsu, but it definitely needs a fry time adjustment. The rice served at Ringo is excellent. It's one of the few Japanese curry places in Seattle that uses a proper short grain rice. It's cooked pretty much on the dot perfect - not too dry, not too moist, allowing each fragrant grain to be felt on the tongue. Great mouthfeel and overall the best rice out of all of the curry places I've visited so far. The curry served at Ringo tastes homemade. It's spiced well with the classic Japanese curry flavor, but also has a bit of fruity sweetness most likely derived from apples, given the name of the restaurant (ringo = apple). At a spice level of 2, there's enough spice added to be felt on the tongue, but it doesn't overwhelm the other flavors. The curry is thickened until it reaches a gravy consistency, perfect to douse the rice with. Near the end, I did find that there wasn't enough curry on the dish to cover all the rice, but that also might be because I didn't balance the prior bites well enough. Ringo does not provide any fukujinzuke on the plate. Instead, at each table they provide small jars filled with pickled ginger and pickled scallion bulbs. (Overall rating 4/5) I'd visit Ringo Curry again to try some of their other menu items, starting with the chicken katsu curry. Considering Seattle does boneless chicken so well, I'm expecting it to be better than the pork. Note: Payment is up at the front counter, not at the seat. Huge fan of Japanese curry and it's nice to see more restaurants dedicated to that and offer something a bit different from the competition and let me tell you, there's a lot of competition out there. The interior definitely has that Japanese aesthetic and vibe while still looking a bit modern. Definitely looks nicer than the outdated decor of the former HoHo Chinese restaurant that use to occupy this spot. You were beloved by the locals and will be missed, but we greatly welcome Ringo Curry to bring people back into the C-ID to keep the neighborhood prosperous. A little knowledge for the uneducated, ringo means apple in Japanese. Thus, the 'O' shaped like an apple in their logo. Learn something, did ya? Also, some Japanese curries add apples to give it a hint of sweetness to the flavor. So you might taste that here considering the name of the place! Did I though? Maybe a little, but it was hard to tell because I ordered my curry with a spice level of 10!!! That means it's really spicy.... So yeah, I should talk about that. They have spice levels for their curry ranging from standard, level 2, level 5, and level 10. So yeah, I got the highest cause I like to burn my butthole. From what I can tell after this only and first time trying it out, seems likes they just add a certain amount of togarashi red chili pepper flakes to spice it up. Nothing too special, but I figured I would share that from I've observed about the level 10 curry. This place isn't about the spice level though, it's about the food. Got to try out some of the appetizers like the fried squid and gyoza. Both were pretty good, but as an unofficial gyoza connoisseur, I've got to be a bit more critical of these dumplings. I appreciate the fact that it was pan-fried, but the amount of time it was fried seems a bit minimal. Crispy on the bottom, but a bit rubbery on the other sides. Steamed quite a bit, but didn't sit long enough on the pan to be crispy enough on the bottom. They definitely showed care into cooking these gyozas, but maybe they were a bit too careful and took them off the pan too early to not crisp up the bottom completely. Could use some improvement on that technique. As for the fried squid.... It was fine. It was fried. Golden, crunchy, and came with spicy mayo.... Okay, I'll say a bit more. I liked that they didn't cut up the squid into smaller pieces. The tentacles were visibly tentacles so you know you're eating squid. Definitely the best way to fry squid in my opinion, I liked it like this and I don't think I've seen it fried like this anywhere else. So it's unique preparation-wise. And now for the curry. It comes in a regular size or a large size. You just get more rice and curry sauce with the large size. No additional meat unfortunately. That costs extra. You can choose one of the preset curry entrees or customize one and add a bunch of toppings for additional costs if you like. The higher levels of spice also costs extra. I got the pork cutlet katsu with my curry and got to try out one of the tempura shrimps as well. Level 10 spice of the curry was manageable. I got to feel it a bit more as kept eating, but it was nothing to sweat about. The crispy skin of the cutlet was pretty then and didn't stick to the meat which was odd to me. Maybe it was because the meat was pretty juicy and meaty which was good. I also got the omelet curry which a lot of people mistaken that as omelet rice. Sure, they could make the omelet the same way as that famous Japanese guy on youtube makes it, but that takes a lot of skill to do and perfect. Trust me, I've tried. The omelets they make here is solid and not something to complain about unless it's not cooked right. So have some reasonable expectations. Overall, I thought the curry was good. Different from other places around here, but it's a good kind of different. Also tried their cold brew matcha which comes in a 750 ml bottle. So great to share with others. It was quite good and not commonly offered at most restaurants, so definitely do try it out. Highly recommend it. Being such a new restaurant, it's definitely going to take a bit for them to manage the demand they are getting. So be patient if you want good food done right. Or wait til the hype dies down a bit. Like go on a weekday like I did instead of the weekend when it gets extra busy. So would I come back for more curry? Yeah sure, I'd be definitely down to come back with friends. The chicken cutlet was very juicy, albeit it was a thick chicken breast. The curry had a sweet and tangy kind of flavor, comparable to your authentic Japanese curry from Japan. I will say the spiciness is on the hotter side. I can handle spicy, but 2 had me breaking out in a light sweat. My wife also stated her 1 star had quite a kick to it. Service: opened two weeks ago, looks like the restaurant is still getting its feet on the ground and took almost 45 min for our food to come out. Staff were very nice about it and provided us with some miso soup for the wait as our food came out at separate times and some of us had already finished eating. Inside is spacious with comfortable booth and table seating, you don't have to feel cramped when eating here and the decor is pretty given it is a new place. Now for the food. The karaage was insanely juicy and very tasty, it made me wish there was a spicy seasoned option similar to Taiwanese popcorn chicken. The curry had an enjoyable thinner consistency and good spice level for a level 2, not underwhelming and I pleasant short lingering spice. Unfortunately, the rest of the components fell flat. The omelette is just a thin layer of cooked egg over the rice. If you prefer your eggs fully cooked you won't mind this, however most omurice I've had in Japan are half cooked or slightly undercooked so that the inside is custardy and creamy. The hamburger steak was not juicy and lacked its own flavor. The pork cutlet katsu was breaded well and tasty, but was tough to cut and chew. Overall for the price, I don't think I will be coming back. 3 dishes and 1 appetizer rang up to $76. There was a lot of other things on the menu that we wanted to try but based off the flavor and price, I'll keep looking for a Japanese curry place that meets or exceeds places like coco ichibanya. read more

Came in for a quick weekday lunch and was able to avoid a wait. The place had a decent amount of seating for small to mid sized restaurant. I found everything to be clean and comfortable. The workers were kind and my order came out quickly with no issues. The menu mainly offers curry with a variety of topping options, such as katsu and sausages. This visit I went with the popular pork cutlet omelet curry. Some toppings were sold out at the time, hopefully they'll be available on my next visit. The spice levels are 1, 2, 5, or 10. Level 5 and 10 cost extra. I found level 2 to have a very slight kick to it but as a spice-lover I would not consider it spicy, even spice-averse people would likely be able to handle level 2. I was worried the pork cutlet would be dry and tough, but it was surprisingly cooked well and was a tasty addition to my curry. I've honestly had tougher tonkatsu at katsu-focused restaurants, so I'm not complaining. The curry itself was my favorite part, as it was very flavorful but also balanced so I didn't get tired of the taste. There is a sweetness from the apples they blend into it that works very well. The curry is the smooth kind without chunks of vegetables but is instead all blended together into a sauce-like consistency. Because of that, I'd recommend choosing a topping to add extra texture. There is pickled ginger at the table that I found a bit sour compared to what I'm used to. Tonkatsu sauce is also available upon request. My omelet was fluffy and warm, and while not really necessary, was nice to have. Eaten on its own, it is very plain-tasting. The combination of having a little bit of curry, rice, katsu, and egg all in one bite is incredibly satisfying. Though the price is steep for a casual lunch, I'm definitely glad to have tried it and would go again. The only thing lacking in my opinion is the portion size. It is a decent amount of food, but maybe not proportionate to the price point. For fans of Japanese-style curry, I would recommend trying Ringo at your convenience.
