As other reviewers have indicated, the exterior is very unprepossessing, but look past that and you'll have a great meal. We were passing through Hagerstown and chose this cafe for lunch based on the Yelp reviews. We sat at a high top table in the bar area, and were surprised by how extensive the bar offerings were. There were booths as well as tables in the dining room section. We had a grilled mahi sandwich and a lovely salad with a crab cake added, and all three items were delicious, well prepared, and served in a surprisingly short time considering the restaurant was very busy. Stopped by on the way to Va from Ny. It is a local pub with solid family-style food and service. I love these places because the places tell you the beats of the local. I had a beer and mahi tocos. Good tocos though the fish was slightly dried. But no matters because family style restaurant is not about perfect food. Not a bad choice to stop by. read more

This rating comes after our second visit to Rik's! We're from out of town, but often stop in Hagerstown while in route to somewhere else. Finding Rik's is like finding a secret oasis. It's in an old, nondescript shopping center, without major signage. Now to the food. The menu is the perfect size! Just enough options, but not overwhelming... AND everything is good! From the obvious crab cakes, to scallops to the turkey and Brie sandwich, you can't go wrong... Even when something might be off, like the old bay chips last night.... The service makes up for it. Our waitress Kelsey was a doll when my FIL informed her the chips weren't okay. She was polite and swapped them for fries. Amazing customer service! They also take reservations! I usually love this place. Service is usually great, and food is always amazing. Food was still amazing, but last night we did not have a good experience with our waiter, Will. He never introduced himself, we found out his name from our receipt. The service he gave us was appalling. We had reservations at 6:30 and there were 10 of us, so I understand we were a big group. He rushed us through completely. He didn't know much about the menu, beings that he didn't ask how I'd like my steak cooked, and then was sarcastic about it. As most of us were still eating, he came around with to-go boxes, handed them to my family member and told us to "distribute accordingly." Soon after, he came back with our checks. Again, as most of us were still eating. He even took my plate from me as I still had a fork in my hand and was still chewing. Dessert was never offered, and when we asked about a dessert he became very short. We felt as if we were rushed through our meal. My mom got her complementary birthday dessert (which was nice) but she got it as she was still eating her entree. I just feel that this is too nice of a restaurant for this type of service and behavior. I feel we should have been treated much better than we were. We felt like we were on a time frame. Updating with two more dishes on a recent trip. The pasta dishes can be quite heavy and I'm not sure if I tasted the "mango" in this particular dish and if it went well with seafood. Rik's Cafe is in the middle of a strip mall. Some people would just drive past thinking it's not good. I would call you out and say never judge a book but it's cover. The service is top notch and servers very nice. The food was delicious with nice portions. We tried the Bison burger and loved it. The burger itself was juicy with two kinds of cheese, a bacon jalapeño aioli and pickled onions... what a combination. I feel confident saying you couldn't go wrong with anything on the menu. Over all, I will go back and highly recommend this yummy restaurant if you are in the Hagerstown, Md area. I've been here quite a few times and always enjoy my food! My favorite thing to eat by far is the sweet potato fries and apple butter. I've tried a multiple items from the menu and honestly recommend anything on there. The Loaded Tots and the Blackened Chicken Pasta are also up there as two of my favorite dishes from here. Perfect dinner experience. Of course they were busy so we ate at the bar. Great service and delicious meal. I had a smoked salmon with chorizo. It sounded great and it was very good. This place looks like a sleeper as you pull up to the building you're not sure what to expect. Walking in the restaurant welcomes you with a warm laid back ambiance. We have been coming for years and the last 3 trips, we were trying to give the benefit of the doubt, have just kept getting more and more disappointing. The portions have definitely shrank. The fries tasted like they had been cooked in oil that hasn't been changed in eons. Burnt and bitter. The ahi tuna tacos were lack luster. No flavor except the hot sauce. What a nice little surprise as we passed through going home to Niagara Falls. Stayed over in Hagerstown on the way back from Myrtle Beach and as we drove in town looking for somewhere to eat we got worried by what we saw. Not much to pick from. Yelped "Top rated restaurants in Hagerstown" and Rik's popped up. Decided to give it a try. The food was really good. The steak special was very good as well as the shrimp and crap app special. The grade of ahi tuna was awful. They omitted the sirache sauce bc I had told them I had a nut allergy. But I would have rather they let me know so I could make another choice. It was tasteless. Great service and food. Based on a bad experience at another restaurant we showed up on Mothers Day at 6:30PM. They were able to seat us in the bar area and we were promptly greeted by Will. We loved Will's demeanor and he made a great drink recommendation (trust Will: the Watermelon Refresher is awesome if you like Rum drinks). I had the Southwest Reuben with sweet potato fries (excellent) and my wife had Burrata Salad (also Will's recommendation.) Everything was great and we finished with the fried cheesecake (sorry I forgot to take pictures for the review). Went here to get takeout on a Friday night. We walked up to the counter in the back and placed our order, then just walked around the parking lot for a few minutes. It ended up being ready in about 10 minutes; we were very impressed by how quickly they got it done even with customers in the restaurant. For our meals we got the blackened chicken wrap with sweet potato fries and the veggie burger with regular fries. The blackened chicken wrap was one of the best that I have had. After having too many wraps lately where the chicken tasted rubbery, this one definitely was not and went beyond my expectations for flavor. The blackened chicken combined with the jalapeno wrap definitely had a kick to it which I appreciated. It wasn't overpowering, but just enough to provide a flavor balance. The thing I appreciated most though was that there wasn't an overwhelming amount of aioli on the wrap, just enough to hold everything together and provide a creamy balance of flavor. The sweet potato fries were also some of the best that I have had recently, with a nice crispy outside and a soft inside. We were kind of surprised that they came with an apple butter, but this is definitely a great way to eat sweet potato fries, and we will be doing this more. However, I will say we also asked for some Dijon mustard on the side as well for the fries, just so that the dipping sauce wasn't all sweet. The vegetarian burger was more of a vegetarian gyro-like sandwich with some crunch. The patty is made of black beans, edamame, and corn and is then panko crusted. It was also kind of interesting to see what looked like Doritos in the sandwich. They added a nice crunch, which is always helpful with vegetarian burgers. The naan was definitely the right choice of "bun". It had pseudo southwest vibes and was overall pretty good. The regular fries were a little soft, but the cut and taste of them was good. Overall, the food was very good and the staff was super friendly and easy-going. It's definitely a place that will make you want to go back to try more options, as we really want to. Also when we were in the restaurant ordering we overheard a waiter go up to a couple to welcome them back for their second night in a row in the restaurant. Stopped for lunch at Rik's back in December while in Hagerstown. It is located in an average-looking strip shopping center. When we arrived toward the end of the lunch hour, the place was about 2/3 full, but no one at the front desk to greet or seat us. So we waited....for what seemed like several minutes, feeling the draft of cold air every time someone opened the door. Then a nice woman returned and seated us in a booth in the main dining area. The interior is split between a bar area and main dining room. It's a somewhat cozy arrangement. I ordered the Havana Burger which was fairly tasty. It was a unique taste blend with Angus beef, Black Forest ham, and BBQ pork along with American and Provolone cheeses. Pretty good. My wife ordered the Chicken Club Wrap with ham, bacon, and Monterrey Jack cheese, and said it was fine. Service was fairly good and prices were ok. One of the owners, Rick, stopped by to check in as we finished up and we talked for several minutes about his restaurant. Not a bad place, but based on other reviews, best to eat here for lunch to avoid dinner rush. We might consider eating here again sometime. read more

Cooked perfectly and the right amount of crisp...ummmm, could have had another batch.. for sure. For my entree i got the blackened chicken pasta... that chicken.. oh my.. somebody definitely put their foot in it.. Overall pasta was certainly yummy. I always enjoy my dinner when I go to Rik's. The food is absolute delicious. There is a trendy, moody ambiance, service is always great.

Rik's holds a special place in our hearts. It was one of the first restaurants we went to when we moved into the area, and we've been back many times since. We got takeout from Rik's the day I proposed, and we had dinner there with our extended families the evening after we had our (COVID-induced) Zoom wedding. We love that Rik's feels both fancy and casual - we can get fancy entrees like short ribs or steak, or if we want something less, we can get burgers or sandwiches. Rik's has delicious and often unusual daily specials (usually posted on their Facebook page each day!) Our go-to choices: The Southwestern Reuben (with sweet potato fries!)
