We were in town for a baseball game and we parked across the street from Betty's. It was a very small place but the people made it very inviting, including the patrons . very small quaint breakfast spot. the restaurant is cash only, but they have an atm on site. the food was okay. they do get their meat from a local farm which is a plus, but their prices are pretty high compared to other small, simple breakfast places. i'm not sure if that's because they buy their meat locally, but it is something to be aware of. the same breakfast meal that we could get in our hometown - versus this restaurant - was easily a $10-$15 difference. we both left our meal not fully satisfied and stopped down the street for a pastry. read more

I'm going to review lunch and breakfast. Lunch is amazing, breakfast is just not spot on. The pancakes were doughy and like a sponge, the sausage tasteless. The only thing it had going for it was the coffee. Our server was amazing and sweet. The older lady was stressed and grouchy. 3-star crabcakes My wife and I have enjoyed great breakfasts at Betty's for years and the crabcakes for lunch were excellent. This year the "backfin lump crabcakes had zero backfin lump crab meat in them. They were mealy and we could not find one piece of back fin lump crab meat in any other of the 3 crabcakes that we were served. Weekdays this is one of the few mom and pop type places open at 6am. This is a cute diner and that's about it. It was here or McDs. I should have chosen McDs. I ordered breakfast and trust me when I say I waited and waited just to be served and there was maybe five diners in total. The home fries are deep fried nuggets. Just smacking of greasy fast food eateries-nasty. My coffee cup was served full with two creamers and that was the only coffee I had except for when I got up with my cup and asked my texting-obsessed server for more. I can't stress enough how neglected the customers were this morning. I'm not coming back. I'm not saying the people are rude but they are lazy and careless. Hot dang! This place is so good. Popped in on a Monday morning. It was pretty quiet at first but not too long after people started to stroll in. There was only one person working and she was a beast! Needless to say, service was great! The sausage patties were home made. MUST TRY! The biscuits and gravy were also homemade. The biscuit had a nice crispy outside and the sausage pattie was packed with flavor. MUST TRY! The pancakes were triple stacked, the size of a full plate. So guess what...you're not leaving hungry! Betty's diner is, well, Betty's diner. A small town source of pride. Good food, good prices. Notice the word "good." The place looks grimy, but it is clean. The service is outstanding, delivered but a clutch of women who look like they were genetically programmed to be diner waitresses. Lot's a kitschy signs around. Local crowd that includes moneyed retirees who have settled here. Hippies from the university, and some working class. Now, good. The breakfasts look great but the home fries are unevenly done and the sausage chewy and tasteless. The chipped beef and sausage gravy are unremarkable at best. The sandwiches are just okay, except the Ramsey burger which is top-notch. Prices are good (there's that word again) but not bargain basement. Betty's is proud of their crab cakes, drawing from the MD Chesapeake tradition. The crab cakes are good, but not at all exceptional. There is way more filler than they claim. And boy are they expensive! Now, I've eaten at Betty's at least ten times and never been disappointed. But it is not that remarkable diner we've all found somewhere or the other. read more

CASH ONLY Betty's is in the middle of the block. It is very unassuming from the outside, but going inside I was transported back to when I was a child going to breakfast with my grandpa to our small town local diner. The inside of the restaurant is super clean. Even for an older building, there was no old building smell and no dust anywhere, not even the corner of the many picture frames. The staff was friendly and inviting. Our food was cooked perfectly. Even through the small restaurant was about 1/2 full, we got our food quickly. The only downside is that they are cash only. They have an ATM inside the restaurant in the back, but it has a $20 pull limit, so grab cash ahead of time. We will be going back. read more

I was told I had to sit at the counter when I was clearly waiting for a table. Then I was denied service for refusing to sit at the cramped counter space. I guess they don't need my money? My family and I have gone to Betty's for several years now and the food is subpar but it is convenient as we are local and live really close. The reason for the low rating is that consistently the staff is rude like we are a bother just being there. Today however was the last time I will support this small town business. I brought my 4 year old with me and stated it would just be the two of us eating but could I get change for a dollar to put in the meter (If you know this town the parking police are ridiculous). The server, without even looking up says "I don't have change" as she is handing change over to a woman paying. The customer says I don't have four quarters but take this quarter for the meter. I totally understand if I was coming in off the street and just wanted change but I was dining there. Moving forward I will happily go to Martinsburg Family diner where the food is good, the portion sizes are better and the staff don't act like you are an inconvenience being there. It takes nothing to be nice and thank you to the kind customer that offered her quarter. read more

So I'm not sure if Betty was working today but the lady on duty was by herself and handling business! Customer service alone deserves a 5 star review. She was engaging and funny and did an awesome job explaining things you all should know like: the sausage patties are hand made fresh from the local butcher and the pancakes are the same size as the plate and you can choose to have your strawberries hot or cold on top of your Belgium waffle and they boil the potatoes for the home fries and then deep fry them etc. You get the point. Almost everything here is made from scratch. The sausage gravy is divine! Add a couple of crispy, buttery biscuits made from scratch and it becomes a dish I forgot I liked because most places that offer this dish is subpar. This particular morning someone tempted to break in before opening and "Betty" said there was glass everywhere and there was a rush to get the place together before opening. The food was good, the place was buzzing, and the wait staff was pleasant enough. If you want a dated and dumpy diner atmosphere, this is it. If you go, do not get seated at the end of the bar near the door. Multiple people were hanging around in the window nook while we ate. It just made the experience unpleasant to have customers hovering directly next to and behind us while they waited for a table. The weather was beautiful and the staff did nothing to encourage them to wait outside, which is what we had done. There was another cafe I wish we had eaten at instead. read more

Can't speak to the BLT, but my cheeseburger, which wasn't greasy gross at all, was delicious and hit the spot. My waitress (Melinda? Melissa?) was super friendly and very attentive. Was in the area and popped in for a late lunch - the fried pickles were to die for! My co-workers felt like breakfast (it was after 1 pm) and they weren't disappointed. They loved shot cakes and Belgian Waffles. I ordered the crab cake sandwich. Betty's rule, I was told was to try it without any sauce first - and OH MY , was it delicious! Worst service and attitude experienced ever. Online reviews said coffee was good - it was disgusting and $2.49 for black coffee. One guest wanted to make some reasonable adjustments to an omelet and was told mixes are premade and it's also not possible to make your own - meaning you can't order one with veggies and no cheese. While there were other options, the server was so curt - and that's being kind that we left. Not worth a star. Ok, so I'm a HUGE fan of local "greasy spoon" type places for breakfast. There's nothing like flattop potatoes and scratch made gravy. Now you know where my bar is... There were five of us on an early Sunday morning. Let's say, we needed to rehydrate and get some food into us after a great evening. Between us, we got a pretty wide selection from across the menu. By far, we all agree that the Ram Skillet (breakfast bowl) was awesome. You have a choice between sausage and/or chipped beef gravy over potatoes etc. I highly recommend getting half of each gravy. The bacon was perfect- not too crisp and not undercooked. The pancakes were huge and pretty good. Eggs were cooked as ordered and nothing was over or under cooked. The service was great, friendly and welcoming. The coffee never got cold. All in all, if you're looking for a local place to get some great food - Betty's is the place. read more
