It's obvious why Blue Moon Cafe is popular: 1) Big menu with something to please anybody, including vegetarians. 2) Reasonable prices. 3) Nice atmosphere with lovely outdoor garden seating or the nice indoor "glass room." 4) Friendly, efficient hosts and servers. 5) It's in Shepherdstown and there's not a lot of casual restaurant competition. ... but that doesn't make it a great restaurant. The sandwiches and burgers are ... fine. The salads are... fine. Nothing terrible, just not great. Everything seems to be an almost-very good version of what you've ordered, but with something not quite right. Potatoes on a Greek salad, a Reuben that's not grilled, a ookie that's big but lacking in brown sugar or vanilla flavor, or pears on the pear salad that came... from a can? This is cute restaurant with good food, great staff, and a wonderful secluded courtyard. When we got here at 1:30pm on Memorial Day, there was no wait for a table out in their shady secluded courtyard, though it was pretty full by the time we left. There are many umbrellaed tables seating two to six, including a couple within a sunken patio surrounded by a rushing stream. We were served our drinks quickly, and our food came out faster than they expected on a busy day. For a simple lunch, we chose chilled sesame udon noodles from the appetizer menu, tossed in a lightly zingy creamy ginger-sesame and peanut butter sauce. We also had a well-stuffed tender sliced beef & brie sandwich on a toasty flakey baguette with just enough brightly flavored horseradish mayo. The sandwich came with a generous serving of any salad, so we chose the flavorful grilled portabella with roasted red potatoes, chopped tomatoes, and feta cheese over fresh spinach, with warm creamy mushroom sauce on the side. An amazing savory and hearty lunch. The restaurant is easy to spot, an all-windowed red-tile-roofed corner building on High St, with a deeply vined side with ornate arched-windows on Princess St. There's on-site parking on Princess St., and metered parking nearby on Princess and on High, but I think the unmetered street parking and the lot across High St require permits. read more

I almost never leave negative reviews. I'd rather deal with something in the moment. But, wow. I've never thought blue moon's food was particularly good but I like the garden. Tonight I ordered a burger, medium rare. It arrived well done. I asked for another and it arrived medium-well. ZERO pink. Inedible. Once happens. Twice? I wasn't going to try for a third shot. We had dinner last night at Blue Moon Cafe. We had called to make a reservation for the outdoor patio. The patio is definitely where it's at--the inside is unremarkable. Our overall conclusion is that the food is quite good, but the service was a bit harried. They took our order promptly. My husband ordered soup and we planned to share an appetizer. The hummus plate came right out, but the soup did not arrive. It was a very generous portion of hummus, served with both pita bread and tortilla chips. Then they brought out our entrees, so we told them to cancel the soup. Later, another server brought the soup as we were midway through the main course. My husband's quiche and my chicken-avocado salad were both good. There was a big side salad with the quiche but no salad dressing. So we asked for some ranch dressing, but that never came at all. When the bill same, we had to remind them to take off the charge for the soup. Our server was pleasant, just overwhelmed. This culinary gem is the crown jewel of the local restaurant scene. You can't beat its setting with an outdoor seating area that boasts a babbling brook and lush foliage. The vibe is hippie casual and I couldn't get enough of it. Our server (Hailey) was superb, as expertly guided me toward a delicious Beef and Brie sandwich. This sandwich was a hearty score that screamed succulent and delicious with every bite... yum!! For me, the Blue Moon Cafe is a must see stop when I'm in town. We visited this restaurant to celebrate a friend's milestone birthday, reserving an outdoor table for 12. Upon arrival, we found the table set for only 8, so we added a table and chairs ourselves. Our server, Taylor, was difficult--cold, and borderline rude, with a snappy attitude that felt discriminatory. Despite this, we tried to stay positive to keep the mood light. Later, two tentative guests joined, bringing our group to 14. We took two chairs from nearby empty tables. Five minutes later, Taylor approached and said, "You can't take chairs from other tables, even if they're empty. Your reservation was for 12. Put the chairs back." When I asked where our extra guests should sit, he replied, "I don't know," which was incredibly rude and dampened the celebratory vibe. I spoke to the manager, who was equally unhelpful and cold. I explained we were celebrating a milestone birthday and requested two additional chairs. She agreed to send chairs from inside but insisted we return the ones we took. The poor service and the attitude continued till the end despite our efforts to work with their staff. The food was decent, and the ambiance, with water flowing, was pleasant. I can't tell you how many I had while I was at Shepherd Not pictured but was ordered at my table, the pilgrim sandwich - smoked turkey, Brie, cranberry aioli on a warm, soft ciabatta roll, and the chicken quesadilla (which looked so good I'm gonna order it next time!) Maybe we were the last Door Dash order of the day. This is one of those meals which is probably better fresh in the restaurant. The best parts of the meal were the French Fries and Lava Cake. A friend from the area liked this local favorite so we got here around 12:30 on a Thursday and grabbed the last outdoor table. Beautiful garden area with the Town Run (waterway) adding to the unique setting. We started with the Crab Dip appetizer. Parm cheese topping was a twist and we enjoyed it. For lunch it was the French Dip and Triple B Burger. French Dip was tasty and the Burger had house ground beef (char broiled taste) with Brie and Bacon bringing it all together. Although we didn't try any, they have a good selection of local/craft brews. Not much room for dessert but couldn't pass on the Peanut Butter Mousse pie. House made and had just the right amount of PB taste in the Mousse. Chocolate graham crust was tasty but could have been thicker. We saw a few dogs in the outdoor area as they are dog friendly. The outside ambiance of this place is unmatched! We were seated outside (but felt like I was in a magical rainforest) under beautiful trees, various foliage, pretty lights & a stream running through the seating area. It was so peaceful and really felt like I was in a fairy tale forest. The sound of the stream makes it so you can't hear other people's conversations and it so peaceful to hear. The menu is pretty expansive. Appetizers, Pizzas, sandwiches, entrees. I wished I had more time to eat more here but we just came for a quick app and drinks. The spinach artichoke dip was great! Searching "Restaurants near me" on Yelp led me to find The Blue Moon Cafe in Shepherdstown, WV while on a road trip. What a gem! The small restaurant is quaintly tucked on a corner near Sheperd University. It's so cute and cozy! We sat outside on the adorable new age patio and enjoyed a lovely lunch. Nadean was our server and she was professional and pleasant. I enjoyed the Buffalo Ranch Salad with tasty chicken strips, tomatoes, cucumbers, French fried onions (yummers!), cheese and fresh greens. It was delicious. I stole my partner's French fries because they were yummers, also. They make their salsa in house here and it's so, so good. Came here on a Sunday afternoon, after a bike ride. I've never sat inside but the outdoor space is really nice. Service was good as was the food. Nice little creek with lots of shade. We all had sandwiches and although my veggie sandwich was good it was a little underwhelming in size. Everything else was great. I'm PRETTY sure our waiter was high and or drunk, since when he came back to us (before we got our food and drinsk) he said, "Oh, you don't have your drinks??????" And then proceeded to ask if 2 Choco milks and a sweet tea was correct. He then proceeded to bring out a thing of nachos with beans. Also, he was using a tablet, not paper to write our order down, so he had it easy, but NO, some how he forgot us! Food was okay, but we could easily make it at home. I wanted to update my review since it's been a while, I have been here twice in the last 6 months. Food is still delicious-highly recommend the buffalo chicken wrap AND sweet potato fries! The atmosphere is great as well, definitely still has that "home" town feel. The past two times though, I have gone here as a solo diner, and every time have been seated (by the same person) in the most awkward area; right in the open, center of the front dining area. Felt like I was in everyone's way and I have also noticed that when you dine alone, you're often overlooked despite ordering more than one thing. I always order more than one thing wherever I go and leave a good tip. I do want to give recognition to the servers and cooks though, I realize they're busy but they're still hard working individuals/team. I will return soon, just hope the seating will be different. read more

We have a puppy, so we are always looking for a dog friendly restaurants with outdoor seating. The Blue Moon ticked those boxes and exceeded our expectations with a magical setting under the trees by the creek. I got a Rachel, which was really good, my husband got a white pizza, and we both enjoyed our food a lot. A lot of the staff came out to meet our puppy, which is always fun. Super dog-friendly spot, good prices, quite a few veggie options, and one of our favorite dining experiences of 2023!! We will be back. read more

Brought the Mazda Sports Cars of Washington. DC scenic drive here today. Called a few days in advance to make a reservation, and working with the Blue Moon Cafe was a joy. We called ahead as we began our drive to give them our final total (17 diners) and they were ready for us when we arrived a little early. They put us all in one room with appropriate distancing, and had no trouble with our need for separate checks. The service was terrific, and the food was excellent. EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the group felt the Blue Moon Cafe deserved five stars. Just want to say that the parking across the street for the university was ridiculously convenient for us - it's free on weekends and there were plenty of spaces for our 13 cars. This place is going on to the club list of known good food, and we'll definitely stop in again! read more
