Well, this is one of the classic situations where you "don't judge a book by its cover". Set in a strip mall, this restaurant offers very good food and great service. My wife and I both had salads. I went for the Grilled Baby Romaine. I do not see this option very often and really like the char on the lettuce. I added some grilled chicken and the meal was complete. read more

This is a place we visit every time we are in town visiting our daughter and son in law. This trip we've only been here 3 days and visited twice. The service is friendly and very attentive. Food as always is very well done. We highly recommend the lamb burger and the short ribs. The short ribs are melt in your mouth and seasoned to perfection. This visit happened to coincide with our 30th wedding anniversary and they brought dessert and a special greeting to mark the occasion. Rik's will always be must any time we are in town. Well done! Running errands through Hagerstown and decided why not search up somewhere we can grab a good bite? First place that came and we went without instinct. I'm so glad i did because everything was to perfection. Our server who was also the bartender came up to us friendly and ready to attend us. He explained thoroughly the two entrees i was torn between. Of course we grabbed three entrees! Every single one did not disappoint the mahi burger was impeccable, the portion was more than friendly. The grilled cheese was so good i would make the drive from frederick to Hagerstown just for that alone. The bison was recommended from our server and he did not miss at all; the aioli was what sold me. I was on the back to DC from Ohio. I had been traveling on the PA Turnpike and couldn't bring myself to stop for lunch on the turnpike or in one of the Breezewood restaurants. I found this restaurant searching in Yelp for locations to that were on the way. I was a gem that I never would have found without Yelp. It has an unassuming exterior in a shopping center that has probably seen better days. They were busy. The only table available was a high top table in the bar area. We each had sandwiches. The sandwiches were huge and very good. Our server was friendly and helpful considering that we were first-time visitors. But this time, I paid $26 for the crab cake / chicken entree and parts of the chicken were so salty, it was almost inedible. Second time in. A few things to note. Food came fast but the below reviews why it did. Chesapeake Cheesesteak: cheese is not cooked with sirloin. Always should be. No grilled peppers and onions either, which led to a very dry sandwich. Sirloin was not chopped but shaved. There's a difference in all the things mentioned to create a moist sandwich. Crab grilled cheese: very fishy crab and did not fill out the entire sandwich. More bread than protein...cheese included. Bread was also barely toasted. Fries: tasted like plastic. Fresh cut fried but over cooked, inside was powdery and outside was limp. Apple butter: too much apple. Tasted like dipping fries in apple sauce. There's a line to draw with how much brown sugar and apples to butter ratio. Our first visit was amazing and we will try again but was for sure disappointed this time around. read more

I've been in Hagerstown a few weeks for pharmacy school rotations, I decided to get take-out from this place that seemed to have good reviews and was close by. I saw lots of photos and comments about the Havana Burger so I tried it out. It's a burger topped with ham AND pulled pork, provolone cheese, pickles, and ciabatta buns. DELICIOUS. The pulled pork was done perfectly and not overcooked at all. Pretty big too I didn't finish it all in one sitting. It was my first time having a burger that was this loaded and I knew David would love something like this so I actually went back and got another one to take home for him! I would give it a 4/5 - I didn't dine in but the place had a fun atomosphere and somewhere that all the locals go. Food was bomb. Crab Pretzel, Bison burger we're positively delicious. Would recommend for sure.

From the moment we entered the cafe, the staff were friendly and prompt. We got the Chesapeake Chicken and it was great! The crab sauce and crab meat was delicious. It came with broccolini and jasmine rice. Our server was excellent. It was busy and if we had gotten there later we would not have had a table! All the food that went past us looked wonderful. Traveling back from Seven Springs last Tuesday, I was reading yelp reviews, for Hagerstown and came across this gem of a café. After reading over 200 positive reviews I knew I was going to have to GPS Rik's Café and have lunch. Don't judge a book by its cover. Located in an older strip mall with a sidewalk in front. Open the door and you have a sumptuously decorated restaurant with style and finesse. Beautiful bar and smiling hostess. 1. Great Craft Beer Selection . I had the best beer ever with a cold mug. Champion Malibu Nights , Tangerine Dreams. ABV 6.5 Such a light sweet finish. God it was good. 2. Jumbo wings chili garlic with the most scrumptious sauce. Really good and nice flavor. Perfectly marinated. 3. Salad time: Riks Caesar salad and added chicken was divine. The chicken was juicy and not dry. This heavenly dressing is so good on its own but add the fresh parmesan cheese and croutons . C'est Tres' Magnifique! All said this owner , Rik, is really knowledgeable and knows his stuff. We made reservations here for Valentine's Day with another couple. For an appetizer we had the Tater Tots. They are not your normal junk food tot. They are handmade and filled with cheese and bacon and are topped with it also. They are so soft on the inside. Excellent!! Everyone loved them. We also got the crab pretzel. If you like crab pretzels you need to try Rik's. It is very good!! Soft pretzel and wonderfully flavored crab sauce on top. For dinner I had the salmon. It was cooked perfectly and some of the best tasting salmon I have had. Highly recommend! I was a little disappointed with the Jasmine rice. It was just white rice. Somewhat sticky and not flavored at all. I think they would have been better off serving a flavored rice with the entree's. My husband had the Chicken Chesapeake. It came with two chicken breasts, topped with and crab cake and crab sauce. He absolutely loved it. He said it was excellent! Rik's changes their menu every so often to keep it fresh and new. The food at Rik's is always delicious! I've never had a bad meal here. If you're planning to dine in, I recommend getting reservations for a table. It's basically a bar with a small dining room on the other side of a divider. I've never been able to get a table. I almost always end up at the bar. I'm not a fan of eating at the bar but it's usually my only option. So call for a table. read more

Riks Cafe has always been one of my favorite restaurants in the Hagerstown MD area. Every time I come to Hagerstown to visit family, they always know that I want to dine here. Even though what I order is somewhat basic, they have my favorite Caesar salad! I'm not sure if they make their dressing from scratch... but it is AMAZING!! I always order a side of either grilled chicken or salmon to accompany the salad. The service is always on point, and the drinks from the bar are always served with a smile. Rik's Cafe is more than A-OK! 4 stars for you Rik! The restaurant and bar are in a very non-descript strip mall ... but do not be put off by this. The bar was very long and has plenty of seats. The bar seems like a place I would be happy to drink at and have a meal at if I was a local. I sat in the restaurant during my visit with a larger party. One of the best things about my experience at Rik's was that I received really great service. The menu had plenty of options but I went for the bistro streak and it was very good. I was served two tasty medallions. The appetizers options were substantial also. We ordered two nice appetizers of a crab pretzel and fried calamari. If there was any ding on Rik's it is that the wifi is a little weak. It is likely they do not have enough bandwidth allocated -- oh well, you can't have it all. We selected this spot for lunch based on a recommendation from a local friend whom we met at the restaurant. When deciding what to eat she exclaimed that she has never had a bad meal there so she recommended pretty much anything. I selected a salad and you had several options, a crab cake, shrimp, chicken or steak to add to it. I added the crab cake and the flavor was great; however, I might try the shrimp the next time. We were traveling home from a camping trip and were looking at Yelp reviews for an early dinner. Decided to try Rik's as recommended. The atmosphere was comfortable and the staff were all kind. I tried the crab grilled cheese, my friend had the Chesapeake cheesesteak. The toast on my grilled cheese was burnt but, the innards of my sandwich were good. My fries were cold. My friend said here sandwich was very good. For dessert, we both had creme brûlée cheesecake which was awesome. I'd dine here again. read more

Still happy after third time there - wanted to wait a little before I gave an opinion. Food is AWESOME. Crab grilled cheese is soooo good. And the last time I ordered the Turkey and Brie sandwich. Excellent taste, the compote was awesome, and you can't go wrong with the chips. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and the restaurant crew made special effort to help us celebrate our friends - bartender did a shot with us, and the owner came over twice to check on us and shoot the sh*t.
