We stopped for lunch and really enjoyed the food. I had the grilled cheese and crab cake sandwich served on marble rye since I don't care for sourdough bread that is what it's normally served on. It was delicious! I also enjoyed the french fries that were served with it. My husband had the special sandwich of steak and scallops on a hoagie, he loved it. Both sandwiches were $15, such a deal! This is a great little find in a not so great location. Had I not found it on Yelp, I wouldn't have enjoyed the yummy food. It's more then a cafe, they make their own fries, wings are great, and the crab spread is amazing. The staff is extremely friendly and part of the rating (one star) is for staff and enjoyable experience. We ordered the Havana burger, the Crab Philly, the Ruben, and the pretzel and wings. Highly recommend the pretzel. The cheesesteak was fantastic. The fries were cold but would have been on point if served hot. Update!! Over 10 trips in and still in love. The chef knows how to please. Please do me a favor and go during lunch. Every day they have a newly created masterpiece of a special. My last trip was a ham and turkey sandwich with a pretzel bun, mac and cheese and a special sauce. 5 out of the 6 people at the table got it. Every single person raved about it. It is seriously this way each and every day with their lunch special. Amazing food!! This is my go to place in Hagerstown when I am here for work. Every trip gets a visit! Appetizers: The mussels are amazing. Slightly sweet sauce with crispy strips. The crab dip pretzel is also great. Pretzel bread topped with crag and melted cheese. Mmmm Meals: my absolute favorite thing in the menu is the lamb burger. It not really a burger per say. More along the lines of a lamb burger pita with a side of fries. Check out the picture, it is amazing! My second choice would be the seafood broil. Three huge perfectly cooked scallops. 4 large shrimp, crab cake ball on top of rice with a side of asparagus. All of the seafood is cooked to perfection and oh so tasty! They have a good selection of beer and half price bottles of wine on Wednesday's. Other highlights, the Chesapeake Chicken is delicious. Rik's Cafe is a bit hidden in the strip mall lineup but the food is delicious with a wide variety of tasty options.

The first thing I noticed when walking into Rik's is the very comfortable atmosphere. Dining on the left, a bar on the right, and even a small lounge area in the front. This seems like a place you can come for literally any occasion. Service was incredible immediately and throughout, always making sure we had something to drink and checking on us every few minutes. But let's talk about the real meat of any review, the food. In this case that meat was crab, and it was in the best grilled cheese I have ever had in my 29 years on this planet. Guys I have 2 kids, I've had plenty of grilled cheeses, but none have ever been so perfectly buttered and expertly grilled as Arik's Epic Blackened Crab Grilled Cheese. Light and crisp sourdough bread is just the start. Blackened Crab meat and chipotle aioli are the real stars of this show. On the side I had hand cut fries that rival those at Five Guys if you've ever had them there. Don't let the exterior of this place fool you, it's between a liquor store and a vacant space and the whole shopping center looks like it was dropped there in 1983 and never serviced again, but if you let that stop you from going into Rik's you'll be making a big mistake. read more

The food and speed of service was excellent. My only hiccup was experienced during seating. I was seated after a couple who came in after me and was told the table they had available for me had a 7:30 reservation on it at 6:50. I quickly ate and waited on the couch for my "to go" order to accommodate the reservation. At 7:32pm a walk-in couple was seated at my vacant table. So I really don't know what to think of that. If I would have been made to feel a little more comfortable during my dining experience, I would have given 5 stars. Outside of my table debacle, the food was awesome! read more

Food was great. So was service except from hostess. When we arrived, 5 min early for our reservation, she informed us there would be a wait. . We understood and went to the bar to wait . When she came to tell us table was ready(25 plus min later) , she added in a very accusatory manner " did you settle your bar tab". No, umm we did not, because we hadn't been given a chance to do so. The inside is much cozier than expected from the strip mall location. Staff was very kind and we ordered 2 bison burgers and a mushroom burger. They were able to make many of the requested customizations, although the mushroom bacon jam is premade and tastes more like bacon than mushroom, so the name is a bit off, but all 3 burgers were delicious! I first came here a few years ago on my way to Virginia. On a whim my husband and I stopped here because all the best places are in odd locations (strip mall). We had the crab stuffed pretzel and holy moley, it blew our minds. Blew our minds so much today we decided to visit this place again.. we started again with the crab stuffed pretzel and it was better than we remembered. I got the seafood broil which was incredible my husband got the bison burger. Tried Rik's for the first time last week for my birthday and everything was great! The host was super friendly and cracked jokes with us right when we walked in, and our server greeted us quickly! She was super friendly and attentive and i WISH i could remember her name to shout her out! Another man who i believe was the owner stopped by as well during our meal to check on us and make sure we were taken care of (: I had a peach sangria which was delicious, but let's be honest, it's sangria, it's always delicious! The food was amazing. We started with the crab pretzel, which was delicious! My only wish was that it was a little bigger for the price, but for two people it was a good size for an appetizer. My boyfriend got the crab grilled cheese and fries which he loved. I got the black bean burger with sweet potato fries and was super impressed! The fries were delicious and the burger was an amazing homemade black bean burger - I'm usually disappointed with them at restaurants. One thing - It was served on naan bread and not much of a "burger", i could have eaten it taco style but i opted for a fork and knife approach, hahaha. I had no issues with this and actually enjoyed it more, but good to be aware of if you're expecting a burger! They had awesome dessert options as well. We were created quickly and politely. We arrived just before the dinner hour which was to our advantage. The service was very good and our waiter did a nice job being attentive to our needs. Our food came in a timely fashion and hot. The food was very good. Yelpers have said to have the crab soup and we did - did not disappoint. We also had other dishes and everyone finished their plate. I had the pulled BBQ sandwich and it was worth it. You cannot go wrong with this choice. I upgraded to the sweet potatoes and very glad I did - I recommend them. We splurged on dessert and this is were the 4-Star comes in. They were just not that good. We were excited to learn that they are made on the premises, but we were not impressed. We were planning to just grab carry out , but the person ( we think his name was Austin) who greeted was so friendly and the restaurant was so charming we decided to dine in. Great choice! We ordered a couple of different appetizers and 3 entrees.. our waiter ( the same person that greeted us earlier) was superb. We asked for suggestions and he gave us great suggestions and choices. A strip mall café with gastropub flair in Hagerstown? Honestly, I was stunned. Especially because when I went, it had just opened on a Sunday morning, and the huge parking lot was completely empty, and it just looked odd. And not good. But it is really good! I enjoyed the food here, and the staff was amazing. The reason why I ended up here in the first place was because my husband, in the middle of brunch at Cracker Barrel, suddenly craved a Bloody Mary. We were visiting my parents (Hagerstown residents) that weekend, and my dad immediately thought of this place. He said it is popular and gets packed during the early evenings. The interior of the place feels comfortable. It was during the holiday season, and the place was decked out in charming, home-y Christmas decorations. There's a waiting area with couches right by the entry door that isn't really for dining, but we wanted to relax while drinking and snacking, so we asked the staff if we could sit there. They agreed, as long as the place didn't get busy to where people would have to use the waiting area to wait to get seated. We had to order a few food items in order to drink Bloody Marys (Blue Law) and opted for some orange Thai mussels, a hummus plate, and a burrata salad. This was right after brunch at Cracker Barrel, but we still ended up eating a lot. I practically inhaled the mussels on my own -- they were delicious. I wouldn't say they reminded me of Thai flavors -- they definitely had strong hints of orange and were almost a tad too sweet -- but they were good. My Bloody Mary was good, too. It wasn't the best BM mix I've had, but I also inhaled it. (I just inhale things, I guess. Gah, what is wrong with me?!) Our server, who was also the bartender, was warm, friendly, and comfortable. He sat on the couch with us every time he had to talk to us, and we thought that was cool. I really didn't expect to find something like this in Hagerstown. What a gem! Highly recommended. read more

Meh, food was decent, service and cleanliness was terrible. Our server was inattentive at best and apparently was also the bartender on the other side of the restaurant. Not sure why his section was where it was. The other server in our section was coughing and sniffing his nose over and over and I watched a cook wipe the sweat off of his face with a towel, dig in his head scratching up under his hat, cough, then go back to cooking. The servers were shoving food in their mouths at the pass right in front of guests. Not professional at all! I watched the female put a new trash bag in and never missed a beat, serving a plate right after. I never saw any of the three leave the area so I'm fairly sure they weren't practicing good hand washing, unless there's a hidden sink right at the counter, which I'm sure there isn't. Just not professional at all. Having been classically trained as a chef in a five star resort, I'm maybe a little more picky than some, but it is flu season, so maybe have a discussion with your staff about cleanliness, and for fucks sake, wipe the high chairs every once in a while. My kid probably picked up some strain of Ebola off of that sucker. It's a shame because the food was actually pretty good, but when you're watching all of this nastiness go down, it somehow makes it taste worse. read more

We started off with a soft pretzel topped with crab dip & cheese- so yummy! My son had the bison burger w/ jalapeño aioli & I had an angus burger topped with chopped steak & a horseradish sauce.- it was excellent. No up charge for a side Cesar salad instead of fries. This last visit upon being seated I noticed that a couple of the cooks were eating while also preparing food. This continued while our table waited for our food and while we ate. I ordered the chicken chesapeake, which was very stimulating visually. And that's the only compliment I have. . The crab wasn't seasoned, chicken breasts were tough, and the s such blank. Highly disappointing. Oh and by the way, the cooks continued to eat in the kitchen as we left. Glad someone enjoyed their food. The service was horrible. No need to get into specific. My daughter wanted to treat me a Saturday afternoon lunch for my birthday, and asked where I'd like to go. Wanting to visit Rik's Café after hearing the glowing reviews, decided to try it out. I'm glad I called ahead for reservations because the place was packed when we arrived. Our waitress was nice and quickly got us what we needed. Saw the owner Rik who spoke to every single table except ours. I mean, I didn't have a starry-eyed, ' meet the local heroes' moment, but thought since Rik was out there talking to folks anyway, it was a little odd that he never acknowledged us sitting right there along with the other paying customers. Also, when a different waitstaff brought us our non-alcoholic drinks, he seemed sort of, well, the only way to describe it is... out of it... as he tripped over one of the empty chairs at our table almost falling onto me. I looked at him then at my daughter as to say, ' what the-' but the waiter didn't say one word. No excuse me, I'm sorry, he didn't even look at me. He just had this strange blank expression on his face as he continued on to his mission. I don't know what he might've been going through, but hey, that was just weird. We ordered the crab pretzel appetizer, my daughter got the Ruben sandwich and I got the crab melt. We shared one crème brulee for dessert and I drank only half of the small mug of my coffee and thought all was good. That is, until an hour later back home when my stomach became bloated and churned like a sailor out to sea for the first time. With no remedy in my medicine cabinet, I crawled to the local drugstore for some Pepto to stave off anything else this meal had instore, but despite this, felt sick the rest of the night. Talk about Rik's Revenge. I usually don't eat out and maybe not used to it, but my daughter thankfully was fine from eating there, so not sure.
