Disappointed and left hungry. My partner and I went in on a whim after stopping off for coffee at Aroma's (which is awesome). I immediately got stink eye from the woman behind the counter when I walked up. No idea why (until I realized later it must have been because they were closing in 20 minutes but really...why would you get angry at a customer about that?) I looked at the menu which is a giant billboard on the wall and decided to go with the meatloaf platter and a side salad. My partner ordered the chili cheese fries and grilled cheese. I was told they were out of mash potatoes ( who runs out of a staple like mash potatoes? ) and she'd substitute the salad in instead. We paid and headed to the drink station which had 5 drink choices and of course the one we wanted was out of syrup and shot soda water. We walked over to the back and sat near the windows. My partner heard our number called and walked up to grab our food. Two employees who were sitting near us reading their phones told me I'd need to take my trash up to the front because they were leaving and just changed the trash bags. My partner at the moment walks up juggling the food because apparently they either didn't have trays to set the food on or didn't want us to make dirty dishes for them? Reference my pictures to see the delights we were cooked...or in this case overcooked. I rarely write bad reviews but what we were served was horrible. Meatloaf- Way overcooked, no idea what meat was used but it was not beef. It had large chunks of green pepper and onion and as I type this I still can't get the funky flavor it left in my mouth out. Side salad- More like end of the day leftover hamburger cast offs with wilted spoiled and bruised lettuce. Chili cheese fries- French fries were good but he hesitated going into the chili and cheese portion seeing my meatloaf. The cheese on the fries was most likely a knock off velveta. He ate half of them and couldn't continue and the meat was so-so. Grilled cheese- Came out late and we know why. It was burned. The bread was soggy with grease. He didn't even try it. My family ate here and everyone enjoyed their meals. We did not dine on any milkshakes but they had a variety of options. The burgers were great. You do need to wait for your food to cook. It is not fast food. Order your meal sit down and wait. It is well worth it. They have a couple homemade sauces you can have on your burger. I will definitely eat here again. The bad- my daughter ordered the chicken finger plate and received a basket with 3 of saddest looking chicken tenders I've ever seen. Small, flat and obviously had been frozen. I can buy better looking and tasting ones at my grocery store. I ordered the shepherds pie. This consisted of a layer of instant potatoes then some frozen mixed vegetables, some plain ground beef topped with another layer of instant potatoes and some gravy out of a jar. We ordered a patty melt, a fried chicken salad, a grilled cheese kids meal and a cheeseburger. The salad was a joke. Please take your business elsewhere. The cashier was rude and told us to hurry up and order as he had "better things to do." Each person in our party ordered their food item and milk shake and yet one of the food items was left off. When I asked about the missing item the guy behind the counter spoke harshly to me, saying you want to see receipt and shoving it towards me to look. I told him I had ordered another food item so I don't know why it was not added to the order but we would just split what we already had. Since we had already waited for the food I did not wish to reorder. I could not figure out how the bill was so high and noticed every one of their milkshakes that is beyond basic vanilla or chocolate is a special flavor (.88 extra). The fries were not good as they were very bland. The associates just were not friendly and certainly act inconvenienced from the moment you place your order until you receive your order. After we ate and topped off our water cup (water is free but the styrofoam cup costs .50) , we overheard him being just as friendly to an older patron. When he said he couldn't read the menu as it was written in chalk and hard for him to see, the associate actually responded with, "That sounds like a you problem." Great place to eat while shopping in Williamsburg. They were very friendly and had no problems with our special requests (no buns). Fresh handmade burgers cooked right and good chili and bacon. Definitely not an allergy friendly restaurant. I went for the first time on Friday and asked many questions of the chef and the adult running the cash register before bringing my child with severe food allergies. I was given very specific answers on what was safe and what was not. When I returned the next day with my child, the chef was rude and told me he could not accommodate what he had told me the day prior because the restaurant was "too busy". All of the restaurants in Williamsburg were busy that day but we were able to find other restaurants who took the time to understand the allergies and accommodate appropriately. I came to Colonial Williamsburg for a weekend and was absolutely starving during my exploration around the street. The one tavern open in the main street had a 1 1/2 hour wait. Now that I think back to i, having that as the only option in sight was a pretty terrible idea especially knowing that I'd arrive in Williamsburg on an empty stomach. My search for some other food was filled with disappointment. Pretty much all the little restaurants that surrounded Williamsburg on a Sunday had a long wait. It immediately ended with Retro upon sighting a large line of high school/college students moving along very quickly and also its cheap menu. I opted for the cheeseburger with fried onions, peppers, and sweet potato mustard, quite aware that the onions and peppers were part of the extra fee section of toppings, to my dismay. I also ordered a Shepherd's Pie, perhaps out of hunger pangs. The burger sat between a cold and ungrilled potato bun with square chunks of green peppers and onions and some of that curious sweet potato mustard. The mustard was bland, but sweet, a terrible combination with a dry and tasteless burger in between a cold potato bun. I found myself enjoying the Shepherd's Pie much more because of its salty flavor and hotter temperature, though you can tell it was pre-made and they zapped it to get it out quickly. Having said that, I liked this dish so much more (again, probably because there was actually salt in this one) that I started dipping the burger in the leftover gravy and mashed potatoes in order to finish the last of it. Retro's is a nice concept of a restaurant and it's one of a kind in Williamsburg. It's a shame the flavor just simply didn't cut it in the least. read more

It's a classic milkshake and burger kinda place with the old fashion type of vibe. The prices are very reasonable.
