This was quite possibly the worst pizza I have ever ordered. The crust was thin, soggy, and completely lifeless. The cheese was essentially flavorless. But those were somehow not even the worst parts. Let's talk about the garlic. They used jarlic. Not fresh garlic. Jarlic. The wet, pre-minced stuff sitting in a jar of acid and preservatives. And you could absolutely taste it. It tasted less like garlic and more like someone poured citric acid over the pizza. That sour, metallic, preserved-garlic taste was everywhere. If your kitchen can make pizza but cannot be bothered to chop a clove of garlic, that tells me pretty much everything I need to know about the food. And then there was the spinach. I paid EXTRA for spinach. They put ONE piece of spinach on each slice. Literally. One. I actually had to look at the pizza for a moment because I couldn't believe someone had intentionally prepared it that way and then sent it out the door. One lonely piece of spinach per slice isn't a topping. It's evidence that spinach was once in the building. Charging extra for that is absurd. So, to recap: soggy crust, tasteless cheese, garlic from a jar that tasted like citric acid, and a paid spinach topping rationed out one leaf at a time. This wasn't mediocre pizza. Mediocre would have been an improvement. This was remarkably bad. The person who took my order was pleasant, knowledgeable, and helpful. That is the entirety of the positive feedback I have. While in Williamsburg, we tried to get into Mellow Mushroom on Friday night, but there was over an hour wait. We get it, college town & pizza = Busy. Unfortunately, because of the rain and lightning storm, the outdoor seating wasn't available either. My son had a friend with him who had never been to a Mellow Mushroom before. He's an old soul who absolutely loves '70s music, so I knew he would get a kick out of the fun, funky atmosphere and all the nostalgic décor. Unfortunately, the hostess wasn't very welcoming. We thought we could at least let the kids walk into the restaurant for a minute to check out the vibe of Mellow Mushroom, but she didn't seem very thrilled with the two 15-year-old boys looking around. I understand they were busy, but a little friendliness would have gone a long way! Of course, we wanted him to still have the Mellow Mushroom experience, so we decided to DoorDash it the next night! The pizza was delicious--between the two boys, they ate an entire large pepperoni pizza! Of course, my go-to is always the Holy Shiitake, and it did not disappoint! Even though he didn't get to experience Mellow Mushroom Restaurant fully in person, he absolutely loved the pizza, so I guess we still managed to give him a little taste of the Mellow Mushroom experience! If you're visiting Williamsburg, Mellow Mushroom is definitely worth checking out. I've been to the Fred'burg location but didn't realized there was a Mellow Mushroom in Merchant's Square while visiting Colonial Williamsburg, There were other establishments such as Food For Thought, Second Street Bistro, Electric Circus Tacos and 16 others. As you walked in through the French double doors that are prop open, hostess stand and a small colorful waiting area. I ordered 4 items: 1) Spinach Artichoke Dip 2) 10 Bone-In Wings 3) Steak and Cheese Sandwich 4) Avocado Hoagie. All the sandwiches were delicious, the bread were soft and steaks were tender and juicy. The avocado hoagie is a vegetable only type of hoagie and it was still good. The two appetizers were on point. First, the spinach artichoke dip that arrived to the table with seasoned baguette slices were lightly toasted on the outside and soft inside. Take a scoop of the dip and spread on top of the toasted baguette, you won't be able to just take one bite. Now let me tell ya about their honey sriracha 10 bone-in wings. You can also get them boneless too. The wings were juicy, tender and those flavors .. wow! It was well seasoned and with each bite, your palate just wants more and more. You have a choice of blue cheese or ranch. Because it is so well seasoned, by dipping them in the selected sauce, you will ruin the flavors and your taste buds will hate you lol. We got 3 build your own, a kids Mac and cheese, the holy shiitake, and the bbq pizza...and I do not say this lightly...it was the best pizza I have ever had in my life. I've been all over Italy, Asia, and No America...and this is easily the best pizza I have ever had. The small pizza is still huge, even my 15yo couldn't finish the four slices. The service was attentive and wonderful. Our server was kind, helpful, and interacted really well with our kiddos. I will say that it's a little loud, so that could be overwhelming for some people. Ordered a pepperoni pizza. Dough was fluffy and airy. It seemed a bit over proofed. The pepperoni overcrowded the top and made for a very greasy topping. Sauce is sweeter than my liking. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because we did sit there for a little bit before someone came to greet us and although when our waitress got to us, she was VERY sweet and took care of us... the front desk staff acted as if it was a bother that we were there. The cheese bread was some of the best cheese bread I have ever had. Not the sauce with it tho. It was a little bland. I got the white pizza with half grilled chicken and half shaved ribeye steak and this was probably one of the best pizzas I've ever had. My kids Mac n cheese was cold, but she is a kid and was ready to eat so she didn't mind... but I did because it could have at least been a little warm. We were just visiting Williamsburg for the day but it was a cute area to be in and we will be back. We started with the Pretzel Bites, which we got for free by signing up on their website. The bites were more like pizza ends. For pizzas: We enjoyed the Kosmic Karma, which reminds me of an elevated Margarita Pizza, with pesto replacing basil leaves. We also had the Steakhouse Pizza, which contained steak, mushrooms, peppers, onions on a garlic and olive oil base. As a group of four, both pizzas were plenty for our table, and we took some home. Pies are more expensive than at a neighborhood pizza joint, but you're paying for creative food and a neat place to eat. The Mellow Mushroom is located in the Colonial Williamsburg area across from William & Mary, so it's always busy. We were lucky to get a table on a Tuesday evening in early December. Parking is nearby in the city's lots, and you can get 2 hours free by using Passport Parking in some lots, like the one on Francis Street. read more

After a good day with our grandchildren in Williamsburg it was time for dinner. We were in search of some local fare but the long waits were prohibitive so with MM close at hand it won. Our server was Sydney and she took good care of us. We ordered a large half and half cheese/pepperoni, my wife and I ordered a salad to share and drinks. Finally, the waiter came to us and said our pizza had been delivered to another table. No apology. She said they were making another and we'd have it in 5 minutes. 10-15 minutes later, no pizza. The waiter made no effort to follow through on the pizza and basically ignored us. Non-existent customer service. Horrible lunch experience. I do not recommend this restaurant. A good spot for a nice meal. We had a pizza and it was very good. We were in a bit pressed for time on our first visit there and the server, Dillon, was accommodating. He had our pizza out very quickly. We visited again a couple days later, had the same server and told him we weren't in as much of a rush. He had the pizza out in a good time. It was a fun place. We love Williamsburg for a lot of reasons. Mostly because the food here is amazing. Whether it's small local establishments or chain restaurants the choices are great. With that said we don't have a Mello Mushroom in Maryland around us, so when we're in town this is a "Must stop" for Pizza. Normally I'm a "Pacific Rim" pizza guy but I figured I'd try their specialty limited time pizza the Taco Nirvana. Sometimes these kind of pizzas are overdone with flavor and toppings but at Mello Mushroom it lived up to its name as I was daydreaming bite after bite of this amazingly flavored pizza with just the right amount of enchilada sauce.
