I searched for French dip in Williamsburg. Second street bistro kept coming up on ChatGPT. I looked at the menu and saw a brisket sandwich. When I got to the restaurant I asked if they had horse radish: no. Au jus: yes. I wanted a piece of Carrot cake but I thought $18 was exorbitant. I opted for the pecan pie instead. The online menu said they had some crispy chicken dinner... It was no longer part of the menu when I arrived to the restaurant.. My significant other is allergic to shellfish, and does not eat pork... There weren't a lot of entrée options for him because there was pork all over the place. I did order him some salmon since he could not get the chicken. He liked the salmon. The broccoli had no flavor on it. And the brown rice pilaf was equally Bland. The brisket sandwich was ...okay... but dipping it in French onion soup calling it onion jus.... It just pissed me off. I think the menu was overpriced for tourists. Stopped in for dinner..we requested the bar area and sat at a two topper. Tried a happy hour "gin" dirty martini for the first time and it was delicious. The wife had the chopped salad added grilled chicken as protein and I had the chopped salad w( apple cider vinaigrette dressing) added salmon as my protein. It was an absolutely gorgeous day to sit on the patio! The atmosphere is so relaxing with the pond and gentle breeze. We ordered brussels to start, and I had the creamy artichoke & broccoli flatbread: with creamy artichoke spread, fresh broccoli , roasted tomatoes , parmesan & Jack Cheeses !! It was so good, but I definitely could have shared it. Side note, I took it home and honestly it was soooo freaking good cold. My husband was even ranting about it. After driving most of the day, these tourists were looking for a spot with an interesting, upscale menu and a relaxed atmosphere. Second Street American Bistro exceeded our expectations on both counts! It helped that we had Allison taking care of us. She stayed one step ahead of us all night and kept our drinks flowing. We started with the onion rings, which turned out to be every bit as mouthwatering as they looked in the photos. Normally, onion rings aren't something worth writing about--but these were different. The breading was crisp, flavorful, and downright addictive! For our entrées, I ordered the bone-in pork porterhouse chop with a smoked gouda grit cake, while my wife had the white bean cassoulet, which was just a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese shy of being a hearty and delicious vegan dish. The pork chop was tender, juicy, and a real treat--but the biggest surprise for me was that grit cake. I'm not usually a fan of grits, but this was breaded, deep-fried, and stuffed with cheese. At first, I honestly thought I was eating mashed potatoes--if only mashed potatoes were this good! The atmosphere was lively without being too noisy, and we finished the meal by sharing a five-layer chocolate cake that was the perfect ending to the evening. We're only in town for a few days, but we already plan to come back for lunch to try some of the flatbreads and soups. A real gem in Williamsburg! read more

My wife ordered iced tea, and I had a Bulleit Rye Honey Old Fashioned I was going to try one of the other drinks but the old fashion is excellent. To start, we ordered the Asian Sticky Ribs. Our ribs came, WOW -- talk about tender, juicy, flavorful, and fall-off-the-bone good. Absolutely amazing and the slaw that came with it was outstanding! We enjoyed them both very much as we finished, we were already ready to order more food. Branden, who was also working behind the bar, answered our questions about the soup and salad. We mentioned how much we enjoyed the Corn & Crab Soup on our last visit, and he confirmed the soup is always served in the same size bowl whether you order it alone or with a salad. We went with the soup-and-salad combo and chose the Vidalia dressing. In just a few minutes, Branden brought out our food. While we were enjoying the soup, he came by to check on us. I told him it was veg even better than the other night, since that first bowl didn't have much crab. He seemed surprised, and I even mentioned he could read my Yelp review about it. A little later, he came back with a second bowl of Corn & Crab Soup on the house -- to make up for the lack of crab last time. That was such a thoughtful touch and really appreciated! The salad with the Vidalia dressing was delicious, and we wrapped things up by ordering three cookies to go. I've looked through these reviews pretty rigorously before I decided to order. Not one I can see has suggested the 2nd Street Bistro Pasta. That was hands down kind the best pastas I have had in a very long time. I also tried a bite of the 2nd Street Lasagna. Which was good but no where near as mind blowing as the pasta dish. Very surprised to see so many 5 star reviews after our experience here tonight. First, we picked this restaurant for a few reasons--an extensive Gluten Free menu, a well-rounded kids menu and specifically for the Blue Cheese Lover's burger as my husband is an avid blue cheese fan. It took us quite a while to decide on this restaurant and picked it after seeing rave reviews in conjunction with the menu,and turning down other exciting options due to cost. The gluten free menu is relatively expansive, not limited to only salads like some places, and even differentiates from allergy and preference selections (aka, no flatbreads or fried items if you have all allergy). I ordered the citrus herb salmon with wild rice and vegetable. Honestly, the salmon was cooked well to my preference (medium), the wild rice was flavorful and the broccoli was well cooked. Most places undercook the veggies in my opinion. This was the perfect in between of tender but not mushy, no crunch. Kids menu was decent, one kiddo going with buttered pasta and house made chips, the other with a burger and up-charged berries. The pasta was basic buttered noodles, the house made chips were quite bland. Kids burger was fine, no complaints and a decent serving of fresh berries. Now to the burger... this was the biggest disappointment honestly. The menu boasted a stuffed and topped with blue cheese Angus burger. My husband testified that it tasted like a sausage mixture. The beef appeared a pale pink as opposed to the rich red that fresh beef should appear. This is very concerning considering if this was mixed with sausage, first, that needs to be advertised, as some people don't eat pork; and second, pork should not be cooked to medium rare. Fingers crossed we don't have any stomach issues this evening! We also waited quite a bit from the time of ordering food to its arrival. Overall we were at the restaurant for 1.5 hours, with no appetizers order, which feels lengthy to me. We arrived before the dinner rush as well. Also, just a note, the restaurant was very dark once the shades were closed due to the sun coming through the blinds; although it was appreciated that the host gave us permission to close the shades if the sun was bothersome. Overall, I would give this place a 2.5 if I could, but bumping up to a 3 for a knowledgeable server and good drinks. We won't be settling next time. read more

I was not impressed with this location versus the Newport News location. The food was not tasteful. The ambience was romantic and classy, and servers were friendly. However, i did not enjoy the stale, hard, pita bread. I also did not enjoy my dry bacon cheeseburger, French fries, or chicken wrap. The fries were few, and the buffalo chicken wrap was 50% full of chicken tender batter instead of meat. There were two small chicken tenders chopped in the wrap. The filler was hard lettuce. I don't hand out five stars lightly. But our dining experience was five stars from start to finish. Despite being an increasingly busy dinner hour, we were seated quickly in the amazing Shae's (sp?) section. She was sweet, funny, professional and very quick to take our drink and kids meal orders. She recommended the crimson and clover house wine which my sister in law and I split. It was refreshing and delicious! The kids' meals came quickly as did my tomato bisque (which very well may be the best tomato bisque I've ever eaten). The kids were very happy with their hamburger and pizza options. I ordered the veggie quinoa bowl which was spectacular. Shae recommended the marinated, grilled tofu as a protein and I was not disappointed. I'm picky about my tofu but it was flavorful and well cooked vs being spongey and tasteless like most efforts). My husband and brother in law were happy with the it burgers and my sister in law was pleased with her salmon. All in all, fantastic service and food.
