Now, I have to go pick the glasses up make an appointment with my eye Dr. and then take them back. This has been a bunch of time and gas....oh and by the way I asked for my money back to go elsewhere...NOPE. DO NOT EVER GO THERE WITH THIS NEW MANAGEMENT, he's an ass.

I did not walk into your office expecting a luxury spa treatment for my corneas. I expected a routine contact lens exam -- the same basic exercise I have had before, including through this same business, at roughly a quarter of the price. So when the bill came back at $268, I had the distinct feeling of being mugged in broad daylight by a phoropter. If this exam was going to cost $268, that number should have been made clear before the appointment began. Not whispered through paperwork. Not hidden in a fog of billing codes. Not revealed at the end like the final twist in a bad carnival scam. It should have been stated plainly, directly, and unmistakably: "Before we begin, this contact lens exam will cost $268." Had I heard that sentence, I would have stood up, thanked everyone for their time, and walked directly out the door in search of a business operating somewhere closer to reality. This charge is outrageous. It is excessive, poorly disclosed, and completely unacceptable. No reasonable person would expect a routine contact lens exam to cost $268 unless that price was made brutally clear in advance. I am asking you to review this charge and provide a fair adjustment or refund. And I want to be very clear about what happens if this is brushed off. I will not slink away quietly and absorb this nonsense like a beaten insurance animal. I will share an accurate account of this experience everywhere people look before choosing an eye care provider -- Google, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, neighborhood groups, local forums, and any other digital town square where people still value being warned before they are financially body-slammed over an eye exam. Call it social media shaming if you want. I call it consumer hygiene. I will not lie. I will not exaggerate. I will not invent a single detail. I will simply tell people the truth: I was charged $268 for a contact lens exam, the price was not made clear enough before the appointment, my prior exam through the same business was roughly a quarter of that amount, and I would never have agreed to proceed had I known the cost. What makes this unacceptable is that nobody bothered to notify me. I only found out after repeatedly calling the office myself to chase down updates. They appear to only have one or two people staffed at the front desk, which is clearly causing a massive administrative bottleneck. I do not know if the issue is a lack of training or a total breakdown in their new corporate systems, but leaving a long-term patient stranded without vital corrective lenses right before a work trip is a massive failure. If you value communication, reliable ordering, and basic customer service, look elsewhere in Austin. The current management is dropping the ball.

I'm also impressed that the Wongs have chosen to share their expertise by endowing an eye institute at the University of Texas at Austin. My most recent personal experience with Austin Eye was surgery for lens replacement. While some have derided the facility on Bee Caves Rd as factory-like, I would counter that with the fact that consistent good practices yield consistently good results. I felt well cared for throughout the process, and the results (my excellent recovery and visual acuity) speak for themselves. In the event there had been any problems, I was given Dr. Wong's direct cell number and email. The Austin Eye facility is beautiful, modern, and well-maintained. The same may be said of the older location along Jollyville Rd. I highly recommend Austin Eye for their expertise, state-of-the-art equipment set, and very positive and helpful office staff.

He mirrored the vibe, spending a lot of time talking to me about my daily eye-related habits, the health of my eyes, and ways to reduce strain as I stare at two screens + my phone ALL DAY. Then Deanna helped me find new frames. She has a talented eye for what looks good and is super patient while you make your selection. She was the tie breaker for me when I couldn't decide between two frames. I'm somewhat new to Austin and excited to finally find my preferred provider for eye care.

Unfortunately I am not able to provide such positive feedback in 2026. I wish I could give negative stars. The culture of the office changed. They stopped opening on Saturdays so that employees could "spend time with their families". That sounds nice but in these dark times "family values" is unfortunately coded to some pretty vile political rhetoric. The front desk staff is also simply not as good, communicative, or personable. One associate actually broke my glasses. Fortunately I was there getting new glasses, but I would have liked to hold on to the old ones to have as spares and because they were cute frames. (They do still carry a very nice selection of frames.) The Dr. loaded me up with sample contacts which was very generous (and perhaps compensatory for the frames) but I think the prescription is a little off. Actually I think the prescription on my new glasses might be a little off too which leads to the final complaint: I feel that the quality of care declined in recent years. At my final visit I was actually having an occurrent vision issue which seemed to be ophthalmological in nature and the Dr. was completely blasé about it. She flashed a light in my eyes and said everything was fine. Honestly it was hard not to take her attitude personally. -10/10 do not recommend. There are other options in town. I need to find a new eye Dr. but this last experience has left me hesitant. Thanks for that.
