The worst service! Immediately sat at a table outside which was awesome, but that's it! Waited 25 minutes and no service. No one even came to give an update as to why we were waiting. We finally got ahold of the young man that sat us down and told him that a server had not come over. He said he would get someone. Another 5 min. Finally left, but first, asked to speak to manager, was told he wasn't there. Tried next person in charge, no eye contact. We left and will not be back! read more

I have mixed feelings about Republica. If you are not in a rush and willing to wait for good food, then I would recommend coming here! I've been here twice and both experience are more or less the same -- extremely long wait time for the server to come out with our food. The restaurant is relatively small so I don't believe they're short staffed; I'm not quite sure why we had to wait over an hour both times for our food. I ordered the revolution burger and it was delicious. We also shared the roasted cauliflower which was equally as yummy! This spot has THE best food and I love the outdoor seating (now there is extra seating on the side of the building too) BLT Pasta - AMAZING just get it! It is on the lighter side so it doesn't make you feel gross/fat after eating it. Pita bread/Dip - BEST I have ever had ( you won't regret it ) Shrimp flatbread was a very weird flavor. I would not suggest it as it was $19 and had almost no shrimp on it. The sweet/spicy sauce was not my fav. But with that being said I am sure someone would dig it. It is high end in taste, and style, but such a comfortable place to sit back relax and enjoy one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. They're small plate menu is unique, as well as the ingredients in most of their food. Surprisingly organic and natural and so so tasty. Yeesh - this place was terrible from the service to the food to the ambiance. Took forever for a server to approach us. Ordered drinks and they took forever. Husband got a beer so that was fine but my vodka soda tasted terrible. Waited another 10 min for server to approach our table before giving up and going inside to get someone's attention re: drink and to also order our meals. Had them make a martini to avoid the soda - and again, it was terrible. Anyway, food came. I ordered a Caesar with chicken and husband ordered the Greek lamb burger. The Caesar salad was inedible. Had a weird spicy dressing on it- yes, spicy - that wasn't even close to Caesar. My husband's lamb burger was a dry hockey puck. He ate his out of starvation but I sent mine back (and choked down my weird tasting martini - didn't have it in me to return it too). Before doing so the server said "okay will remove the salad but charge for the chicken." I laughed and said "no, the chicken is in the same salad with the mysterious and disgusting spicy dressing." Ask for extra lime bc that really helps with flavors. Makes it soo much better. Also got the fish & chips, it was good, nothing that stands out tho, since its like any other fish and chips. Good news!! Everything that made Royal Oak such a great place to go before it got Birminghamed has moved to Berkeley. And here on Coolidge, which is becoming an amazing strip of shops and restaurants, is Republican. It is a small restaurant with a unique menu featuring healthy food, including some nice vegetarian dishes. Oh sure, the meat eaters will whine...until they see their meat options. Ribs to die for, fat juicy burgers. The place is well lit with solid comfortable wood furniture..bring on the poundagely challenged. The art is nouveau and arresting. Service? With a smile. This place is very quaint and a bit small, with a tiny bar right when you walk in and a few tables that you can sit in(maybe like 10-14 tables so I guess medium sized). The ribs were crispy on the outside but tender on the meaty pets, and the onion rings were crispy and the batter they used was delicious. I ended up getting All American burger, which which was cooked to a perfectly medium patty and slathered with cheese and mustard. My buddy got The Revolution which actually tasted better but I could not bring myself to have a larger burger with an egg on it (too many calories as a runny egg on a burger is like a slice of heaven). My fiancé got the chopped salad.. and let me tell you the salad was HUGE, like it could have fed 3 people huge. Actually all the portions were huge and very tasty. Was excited to try out this newer spot and it was on our way back home towards Royal Oak. I ordered the salmon burger on a GF bun with a side of tomato basil soup ilo of fries to be a bit healthier. The salmon patty was good and I liked the pineapple and the avocado, but absolutely disliked how hard and brittle and unpleasant the bun was. It was rock hard and had zero give to it as I bit into it, I was told the gf bun was made from tapioca and came from the local bakery sugar kisses bakery and I have to say it's as bad as the gf bun they use at Vinsetta garage. I think all places should replace their horrible gf bun and get the buns from the same place as famous burgers, that's the best gf bun I have had so far. My experience with Republica was decidedly somewhere between "meh" and "ok." Not awesome, and I'm not in any great hurry to return. I ordered the Republica chopped salad. It was chopped super fine. Too fine, really. And there was hardly any goat cheese on the salad. Indeed, I made a game out of seeking out the goat cheese. The game didn't last very long. My friend had a salmon caesar salad which looked much better. When I asked for a straw for my beverage, I was informed that they "didn't do straws" because of the "planet." While I appreciate sanctimonious virtue signalling as much as the next guy, PAPER straws do exist. Perhaps that might be a reasonable compromise in order to meet the needs of customers Meanwhile, my sensitive teeth did not appreciate drinking an ice cold beverage without a straw. Lastly, the service was slow. There was only one waitress, but to be honest with you the place is small and wasn't crowded. In fact, we were the very first customers of the day. Booze: Their draft beer selection featured breweries from around the area at a reasonable price ($5). It seems like they rotate taps often, they had about 13 when I was there. They also have $5 house wines every day all day. Their special cocktails are printed on paper and put in mason jars. Pretty cute. Food: Absolutely fantastic. I could stop there. But I won't. We got the Tomjohn rolls which are egg rolls stuffed with beef and onion with a spicy feta dipping sauce. Beef was perfectly cooked and tender. We got The Revolution and the Buffalo and Blue with fries. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The Revolution features just about everything you could put on a burger to make it amazing including Gouda and a fried egg. Two meat patties. Sriracha mayo. Need I say more? The Buffalo and Blue was topped with a blue cheese celery and apple coleslaw. Perfectly mixed so the blue cheese didn't overwhelm the sandwich. Service: On point. The waiter was there to check on us often and our drinks and waters were always filled. 5/5. Overall: Great place for a happy hour and food after work or a weeknight dinner. The space hasn't changed much from the Berkley Breakfast Café but the fare, while worlds apart, is just as good. With a Mediterranean air to it, the menu offers fresh inspired flavors. For an app we ordered the Lobster Grits which were really almost perfect. You'll enjoy them if you like lots of chunk lobster meat. I was impressed by the amount of lobster they used. I'm also a fan of "Buy the Chef a Shot" when it's on any menu. Why wouldn't you want the person cooking your food to be happy?! Buy him a shot. What I love about this place though is that "Buy the Chef a Shot" is its own appetizer where he'll send you something back for the table. He sent us a ball of goat cheese that was panko crusted and fried and served in a shallow dish of their tomato fennel soup. It was delicious!! For the main, my girl had the Toasted Cheese and Soup and I had the server choose for me, being torn between the Village lamb burger and the Beet burger....obviously worlds apart. The Toasted Cheese was buttery griddled hearty multigrain bread with cheese and bacon served along their tomato fennel soup. I loved the sandwich but the soup is almost akin to a chunky Italian style tomato sauce. It was good and fresh tasting but the same soup came in our app so it was a little redundant while really tasty. The Beet burger is way outside my comfort zone but it sounded really good and I've been on a beet kick lately so I thought I'd try it. It was...different, but good. Not nearly as satisfying as a lamb burger but a nice change of pace, I'd order it again but not until I had their other burgers first. It was light and really messy but I liked it a lot. Service was great, seating was plenty, at least when we came, and the location is really accessible, while parking is a little challenging at peak hours. Republica is a little place with plenty of character. My friend and I went to check it out on a Friday night. We had a reasonable 10 minute wait and were offered drinks from the bar. They offer a reasonably priced "house wine" as well as a modest wine list. We started with the cheese board. Along with the cheese selection the board had a jam and bread. We shared the roasted beet and arugula salad and the BLT pasta. Our server had no problem splitting our order, which was appreciated. The salad was a nice mix though I thought that the portion of quinoa on the salad was too much. I felt the same about the amount of dressing, there was a bit too much for the portion size. The salad is large, it was easily enough for two people. The BLT pasta was also a good size to split. It was very good, though it was quite oily and a bit heavy on the cracked pepper. The bacon was pancetta, which I thought was a good choice for the dish. The table next to us had the flower roast, a whole roasted head of cauliflower. We asked them what they thought and they felt is was just okay. The service was excellent. Overall a good experience and we both agreed we would return. read more

The Village Burger ($12) was quite good - lamb, feta, dill and a yogurt sauce. I loved the combination of flavors - lots of dill and feta! I subbed fries instead of beans based on Annalisa B's comments (they must have read her review because now they come in a bowl!). The French fries were really good and for my money I'd always choose fries over beans to go with my burger (no extra charge BTW). My husband had a vegan menu item - the Urban Farm ($11) sandwich. Beets, eggplant, pickled pepper, walnut garlic sauce and some other stuff. He liked it but was still hungry when we got home. He said the side of beans were good, too. Our friend had the duck BLT ($10) and enjoyed it. My cocktail was yummy and strong. The salads looked HUGE! I'd say that the prices are maybe a touch high but I love that they have gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. Makes it easier to eat out with lots of options! This place is EXACTLY what Berkley needed. I say this as a Berkley resident, and I could not be happier that an unpretentious great-eats place (w/ quality bar selections) has opened up in walking distance from my home. After wanting to check the place out since before it even opened a couple months ago, my wife and I recently found some free time together and stopped in for lunch. The menu is small but contains a nice variety of items. We were tempted to try out the fish & chips, ribs, cauliflower appetizer, and chopped salad but will ultimately have to go back for those. We ultimately both wound up being in the mood for a burger so that is what we went with. Our server, Jenny, was knowledgeable and honest about the menu. She was helpful without being pushy or coming off like she was working from a script. She helped my wife select an Ace Pear Cider to drink, which was a nice addition to the lunch and matched well with the burgers. For our burger selections, my wife went with The Revolution and I chose the Village Burger. Both were superb. The Revolution is 10oz of beef along with just about everything besides the kitchen sink, heaped gloriously between a brioche bun. There was an unexpected sweetness to it that we could not place... perhaps from the caramelized onions??? However after a couple bites we realized that flavor tied the whole thing together and also paired well with the sweetness of the pear cider. The Village Burger is an 8oz lamb patty, cooked perfectly, and topped with dill, scallions, feta, and greek yogurt. My experience with lamb burgers is admittedly limited but this was crazy good. Highly recommended. It also came with a side of "yiayia's beans" which is basically just a white bean salad in some sort of fresh dill vinaigrette. Super simple but also super tasty, a perfect accompaniment to the flavors in the lamb burger. The fries that came with The Revolution were quite good as well, even if unremarkable despite their deliciousness. In total our excellent meal (including drink) came out to $31 before tax and tip. Not the cheapest eats in town but totally affordable and well worth the price given the quality of food. I am super glad Republica has set up shop in town and can't wait to go back and try something other than a burger. Kudos to the owners for bringing this place to Berkley. read more

This is a 3.5. I went back to this place after a strong first impression. Unfortunately, the second time around was not so good. I decided to tray some of the small plates this time around. I ordered the Duck Sliders and the Ribs and Rings. The ribs were by far the highlight. They feel off the bone and were very tender. I was annoyed that the stuck with an end piece, but was good enough to forgive. The rings were standard level, but a bit oiler that they looked. The Duck Sliders were okay, but I don't think they were worth the price. However, the real clunkers were dishes that I fortunately did not order, but they came to my table and I sampled them, so I feel justified in reviewing them. The Lobster Grits were just a mess. I was excited to pilfer some from my buddy, but when I saw them I was thankful I didn't order them. I posted a picture so I can't be accused exaggeration. The grits were swimming in oil, it was hard to look at, no less eat. The other was low point was the Mac and Cheese which came highly recommended, but failed to live up to the sales pitch. It was dry and the helping we got was over cooked. I am all for some varying texture, but this portion was just too much burnt. That said; my friend seemed to like it, so it maybe more of a preference issue. In the end, I will go back to this place. However, I will be sticking to the burgers. read more
