Very underwhelmed and disappointed by Republica. I've wanted to come here for a long time but it's so small and always looked busy so I never had a chance to until last night. Let's flash forward to Thursday, we tried to come around 8pm but they close at 8pm?!? Seriously?? Dumb! So we come on a Sunday at around 515pm. There were two tables on the outside patio and not a soul inside. We were told to sit wherever we wanted. I kind of expected exceptional service since we were out waitresses only table but she was pretty much terrible. Took forever to greet us, bring us water and did not ask us how our food was until we were done eating. She seemed more interested in folding napkins then making money. The food was just ok. Nothing special. The chicken chili was kind of bland and its served in a coffee mug which makes it ridiculously hard to eat and very messy trying to dig a soup spoon in a coffee cup. I get think that's clever but it's actually annoying. Invest in some cool bowls! My mom had the tomato fennel soup which she said was good but very spicy which you wouldn't expect. We shared the chopped salad which was good but not amazing by any means. It is huge so it's definitely shareable. My dad had their classic burger and he said it was good but nothing compared to the Redcoat burger I treated them to last week. So all in all this place is fine but not amazing in anyway. I have mixed feelings about Republica. If you are not in a rush and willing to wait for good food, then I would recommend coming here! I've been here twice and both experience are more or less the same -- extremely long wait time for the server to come out with our food. The restaurant is relatively small so I don't believe they're short staffed; I'm not quite sure why we had to wait over an hour both times for our food. I ordered the revolution burger and it was delicious. We also shared the roasted cauliflower which was equally as yummy! This spot has THE best food and I love the outdoor seating (now there is extra seating on the side of the building too) BLT Pasta - AMAZING just get it! It is on the lighter side so it doesn't make you feel gross/fat after eating it. Pita bread/Dip - BEST I have ever had ( you won't regret it ) Shrimp flatbread was a very weird flavor. I would not suggest it as it was $19 and had almost no shrimp on it. The sweet/spicy sauce was not my fav. But with that being said I am sure someone would dig it. It is high end in taste, and style, but such a comfortable place to sit back relax and enjoy one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. My friends at the office have been planning this lunch for a week now. We are always looking for a highly rated Yelp restaurant that has seating outside. We knew to get here at noon, right when they opened, and we did just that. We walked in and asked to sit outside, the nice waitress (Jen) told us to go right outside and she would be there in a minute. As soon as we sat down so did about 9 other people...and she was the only waitress. I give her props for the service we received. I have been to plenty of other places where I would have just walked out! We may have not received refills on our waters right away, or the quickest delivery of our food, but she was trying hard to please everyone. And did so with a smile on her face. Everything we ordered was great, except The Revolution had so many different flavors going on that it kind of just tasted like a big blahhhh of mashed up food I was told. You could not even taste the Siracha Mayo. Also, someone ordered the tomato fennel soup that had a piece of bread sticking out of it - when he lifted the bread up half of the piece splashed back down into the soup and went everywhere. It's like it was already too soggy from sitting in there. Suggestion would be to either make the bread harder like a cracker, or leave it sitting on the side. No one wants tomato soup all over them the rest of the day. I would recommend this place to others to try, but I won't be rushing back everyday for lunch or dinner. read more

We got the calimari tacos, was really crunchy & good, but the sauce on the taco wasn't enough and it felt Ike it was missing a different type of sauce. Ask for extra lime bc that really helps with flavors. Makes it soo much better. Also got the fish & chips, it was good, nothing that stands out tho, since its like any other fish and chips. Good news!! Everything that made Royal Oak such a great place to go before it got Birminghamed has moved to Berkeley. And here on Coolidge, which is becoming an amazing strip of shops and restaurants, is Republican. It is a small restaurant with a unique menu featuring healthy food, including some nice vegetarian dishes. Oh sure, the meat eaters will whine...until they see their meat options. Ribs to die for, fat juicy burgers. The place is well lit with solid comfortable wood furniture..bring on the poundagely challenged. The art is nouveau and arresting. Service? With a smile. This place is very quaint and a bit small, with a tiny bar right when you walk in and a few tables that you can sit in(maybe like 10-14 tables so I guess medium sized). We came when it was not busy and got sat down right away which was awesome. The table was a little bit sticky and could have been wiped down a little bit better; but that's he only downside and we chose a table because it was empty and someone probably had sat at it right before we walked in. The waitress was attentive and her knowledge of the menu was impressive as she made some great suggestions. We got the ribs and onion rings as a appetizer and it was delicious. The ribs were crispy on the outside but tender on the meaty pets, and the onion rings were crispy and the batter they used was delicious. I ended up getting All American burger, which which was cooked to a perfectly medium patty and slathered with cheese and mustard. My buddy got The Revolution which actually tasted better but I could not bring myself to have a larger burger with an egg on it (too many calories as a runny egg on a burger is like a slice of heaven). My fiancé got the chopped salad.. and let me tell you the salad was HUGE, like it could have fed 3 people huge. Actually all the portions were huge and very tasty. Was excited to try out this newer spot and it was on our way back home towards Royal Oak. I ordered the salmon burger on a GF bun with a side of tomato basil soup ilo of fries to be a bit healthier. The salmon patty was good and I liked the pineapple and the avocado, but absolutely disliked how hard and brittle and unpleasant the bun was. It was rock hard and had zero give to it as I bit into it, I was told the gf bun was made from tapioca and came from the local bakery sugar kisses bakery and I have to say it's as bad as the gf bun they use at Vinsetta garage. I think all places should replace their horrible gf bun and get the buns from the same place as famous burgers, that's the best gf bun I have had so far. My experience with Republica was decidedly somewhere between "meh" and "ok." Not awesome, and I'm not in any great hurry to return. I ordered the Republica chopped salad. It was chopped super fine. Too fine, really. And there was hardly any goat cheese on the salad. Indeed, I made a game out of seeking out the goat cheese. The game didn't last very long. My friend had a salmon caesar salad which looked much better. When I asked for a straw for my beverage, I was informed that they "didn't do straws" because of the "planet." While I appreciate sanctimonious virtue signalling as much as the next guy, PAPER straws do exist. Perhaps that might be a reasonable compromise in order to meet the needs of customers Meanwhile, my sensitive teeth did not appreciate drinking an ice cold beverage without a straw. Lastly, the service was slow. There was only one waitress, but to be honest with you the place is small and wasn't crowded. In fact, we were the very first customers of the day. Food was ehhh ok And expensive. We had 2 sandwiches and a coke that cost $37. We tried it but wouldn't return again. Also when we asked for straws they said that they don't have them. That was kind of disappointing, i understand your environment friendly but they could have paper straws for their clients. We regularly return to Republica to try it again hoping it will turn into a local Berkley gem. The food is usually ok. But the food just doesn't reach the level a food interested group can get excited about. For our most recent trip we ordered the roasted Cauliflower starter, a salad, and one of the lamb burgers. The lamb burger was good - prepared properly as well as both delicious and juicy. The asparagus was nicely prepared and served along with the lamb burger. The salad was acceptable but seemed to be plated carelessly. The cauliflower was utterly bland and resembled an unseasoned steamed vegetable. The walnut accompaniment was repulsive with overwhelming unbalanced flavors that didn't seem to have any chance of improving the cauliflower dish it was served with. The tiny lemon wedge included on the cauliflower was incorrectly cut and included seeds and also clashed with the flavors in the dish. We were also disappointed to be told there wasn't patio seating available when we arrived despite several two tops sitting empty only the front patio. All of the larger tables on the patio were filled with couples and the two tops were empty. This seating practice seems wasteful and inefficient. The serving staff seemed uncoordinated but our server did a nice job once we settled into a table. We will return sometime again and hope Republica can grow into a nice local spot for creative cuisine fare. read more

We just moved into the area. Saw it was pretty highly rated here. Got sat down immediately, by someone we later found out was not a server. 4 tables of customers other than us. 1 table was done and checking out. Another had their food, 2 others were waiting for food. 15 minutes passed before the one male server walk-by greets us saying he'll be with us. Actual 15 minutes, not yelp-exaggeration-OMG-EVERYTHING-IS-TERRIBLE-15-MINUTES, cause I texted our friends to join us if they were able the moment we got sat. My girlfriend has worked in the restaurant business for 13 years, she was pretty livid. I'm a patient man, but was irked. We watched as the server brought out food to one of the tables. Once he finished, he went back to the register and started cashing out a check. Girlfriend asked to leave right then, I should have listened but said that it looks like he's getting our waters. WATERS, at the 20 minute point. I can hear him telling the busser that "she's gonna take that table" referring to some other server. I guess some backup server just got there to assist. She came over with waters at the 22-minute point. My girlfriend then, kind of ranted to the new female server. (If you're reading this, I'm sorry, she was just really frustrated and we both know it had nothing to do with you. You were very patient and kind for listening her out. It's my fault you went through that, we should have left when she first wanted to). Girlfriend says she doesn't want to be there anymore so we left. On the way out I heard the female server explain what happened to the male server who in turn had some kind of snide remark. I let it be and we continued out. Very unfortunate. We we're excited to try the place. 3 active tables, a 4th table doesn't even get a greeting til 15 minutes and water til 22 minutes? That's pretty terrible. A brief stop at our table explaining you're having a hard time, or explaining we're getting a different server would have alleviated any issues. Bad communication. Customer service is 99% of any experience, unfortunately there was almost none to be found here today. read more

This is my second visit to Republica, since there menu is relatively seasonal. I have heard this place has good "small plates", which one or two of the items can be 'unique' but it is nothing like tapas - if that is what you are expecting. Also, the "small plates" are small in quantity of food and not a good value for what you pay. During my first visit, I had the burger and it tasted good, not too greasy, and definitely not dry - which is how a burger should be. Burgers are priced slightly above average for mid-range pricing. If you get the entrees; most of them are not worth the value. During this visit, I ordered the "thick cut pork chop with cabbage and apple sauerkraut" for $18. When the entree arrived, the pork chop is a normal cut, which can find at a grocery store for ~$3 (and maybe at a specialty butcher shop for ~$6). At least the pork wasn't dry. There was nothing special about the cabbage and apple sauerkraut, as it was flavorless. If the presentation goal is to have the dish look more plain than if I got a dish of "pork with potatoes and sauerkraut" at a Mom-and-Pop Polish Restaurant, then Republica definitely achieved it and deserves a win. My recommendation is to just get the burgers and avoid the entrees and small plates. The menu is gluten free, vegan and vegetarian friendly; but I don't know if those dishes are good. The interior is artfully decorated, and there is a corner with hockey memorabilia for the hockey enthusiast. Also, there is a small bar, with lots of beers on tap, and cocktail list. There is limited seating, as it only has a max capacity of 53; so if you have a big group, then there may be a wait to get a table. Stopped in here for dinner with mom tonight around 5:30. Place was empty when we walked in but were greeted immediately and sat down. Lots of parking behind the restaurant with a cute patio up front. Booze: Their draft beer selection featured breweries from around the area at a reasonable price ($5). It seems like they rotate taps often, they had about 13 when I was there. They also have $5 house wines every day all day. Their special cocktails are printed on paper and put in mason jars. Pretty cute. Food: Absolutely fantastic. I could stop there. But I won't. We got the Tomjohn rolls which are egg rolls stuffed with beef and onion with a spicy feta dipping sauce. Beef was perfectly cooked and tender. We got The Revolution and the Buffalo and Blue with fries. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned. The Revolution features just about everything you could put on a burger to make it amazing including Gouda and a fried egg. Two meat patties. Sriracha mayo. Need I say more? The Buffalo and Blue was topped with a blue cheese celery and apple coleslaw. Perfectly mixed so the blue cheese didn't overwhelm the sandwich. Service: On point. The waiter was there to check on us often and our drinks and waters were always filled. 5/5. Overall: Great place for a happy hour and food after work or a weeknight dinner. The space hasn't changed much from the Berkley Breakfast Café but the fare, while worlds apart, is just as good. With a Mediterranean air to it, the menu offers fresh inspired flavors. For an app we ordered the Lobster Grits which were really almost perfect. You'll enjoy them if you like lots of chunk lobster meat. I was impressed by the amount of lobster they used. I'm also a fan of "Buy the Chef a Shot" when it's on any menu. Why wouldn't you want the person cooking your food to be happy?! Buy him a shot. What I love about this place though is that "Buy the Chef a Shot" is its own appetizer where he'll send you something back for the table. He sent us a ball of goat cheese that was panko crusted and fried and served in a shallow dish of their tomato fennel soup. It was delicious!! For the main, my girl had the Toasted Cheese and Soup and I had the server choose for me, being torn between the Village lamb burger and the Beet burger....obviously worlds apart. The Toasted Cheese was buttery griddled hearty multigrain bread with cheese and bacon served along their tomato fennel soup. I loved the sandwich but the soup is almost akin to a chunky Italian style tomato sauce. It was good and fresh tasting but the same soup came in our app so it was a little redundant while really tasty. The Beet burger is way outside my comfort zone but it sounded really good and I've been on a beet kick lately so I thought I'd try it. It was...different, but good. Not nearly as satisfying as a lamb burger but a nice change of pace, I'd order it again but not until I had their other burgers first. It was light and really messy but I liked it a lot. Service was great, seating was plenty, at least when we came, and the location is really accessible, while parking is a little challenging at peak hours.
