Yum! We had gone to one restaurant around the corner and were disappointed in their online menu vs the actual menu. It appeared that the seasonal menu had just changed. So we landed at Republic! We were immediately seated outside. It was very nice day to enjoy the cool and dusty air on Coolidge lol! We ordered ribs and rings with a side Mediterranean salad and side of Mac and cheese. It was definitely a sufficient amt of food for one. As well, we ordered burger and fries with an old fashioned. Our server was very knowledgeable about the food and drink menu. We meet once a month with friends at different restaurants that I scout and bookmark for future lunches and Republica caught my attention with its high ratings and eclectic menu. Well, today was the day so we met there for lunch, only three of us this time. As usual, my wife and I studied the photos, reviews, and menu for a couple weeks in advance so when our server, Maddi, had taken our drink orders and then came back to ask if we were ready to order, my response was that I was ready a week ago! When a place has a high percentage of photos of a particular dish, I will often choose that. In this case that would be the Fish & Chips. There were also a lot of photos of the Roasted Cauliflower, aka Flower Roast on the menu, and My wife ordered that. We all ordered Coffee and when it came out I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was in a French Press and the brand displayed on the cups was Chazzano, that we had heard good things about; it had a great taste even black without the additives. More was brought out as it got low. Moving on to the food orders, the Cauliflower was seasoned and roasted whole to fork tenderness and served with a walnut pesto. It was a large size and even with a little help we took half of it home for later. The Fish & Chips consisted of two large Cod fillets was delicious and not overly crisp; it was served hot along with fries cut from whole potatoes with skins on. The on-site made Tartar Sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the Fish and after I managed to eat the entire order, I decided I didn't have room for any desert (we did spot and stop at an A&W for Ice Cream Cones along the way home), couldn't resist! What a great place! I can't believe it took me this long to come here. They have extra patio seating right now; spaced out perfectly. Sunny seating on the side of the building and shady seating under the front awning - it looks like there is spaced seating inside as well. The food is delicious and the service was excellent; drinks were always full, and even the huge roasted cauliflower appetizer came out quickly. To drink, I had the 'take flight,' I believe - a purpley lavender vodka drink. Perfect. So many of their cocktails sounded tempting. To eat, we shared the roasted cauliflower, which is a beautiful whole head, roasted & served with this salty, savory walnut pesto. It fed 4 people and could easily serve 6-8 I think. There was lots to take home. My friend & I both had the beet burger, which is truly amazing and the best veggie burger I've ever had. Served with feta sauce on a perfect pretzel bun, no beet taste at all, really; with this perfect "meaty" texture and savory flavor. It's magical! I want to go back already, seriously, just for that burger. It comes with fries, and I got the upgrade - tossed in herbs and feta. The fries are fried in lard, so DELISH, but not veggie-friendly, heads up. My vegan friend had 3 options, I think, and she had some sort of veggie sandwich served with a beany tomato salad thing. It looked fresh and healthy. The chopped salad also looked delish, with chicken and bacon and all the things. I do wish for one more vegan entree - maybe a stir fry or pasta - but for a meat-centric restaurant, there are more than a few veggie options. Got on yelp to find a new restaurant to try. Came across Republica and it was appealing because my husband wanted fish and chips. It's a small place with a casual atmosphere. The decor is simple, yet trendy. There are, what I'm assuming are, old church pews along the walls making up the benches. It's a very comfortable and welcoming atmosphere. The fish and chips were "good" as reported by my husband. I don't eat fish. He said the tartar sauce was a dill tartar and he didn't care for it much. I had the Sweet and Heat Fried chicken. FYI, it's a sandwich. The sandwich was good, but there wasn't much sweet or heat to it. It was pretty bland as far as the sauce. The house made pickles on the sandwich needed more flavor as well. The fries were hand cut and awesome! The nice thing about the restaurant is the options. They have many vegetarian and gluten free for people on special diets. They don't add sugar or preservatives to their food. Their meats are high quality. It's refreshing to know that. I should mention the service. Our waitress was very friendly. Amazing waitress! Christine was fabulous and took the whole dining experience from an 8 to a 10/10. I had the house-made beet burger and it was super delicious! It's $17.50 but huge! I had 1/2 for lunch and the other for dinner. Yummy bun and the tomato, lettuce and onion were appropriately packed on it. It came with fries and the portions are generous. As for the waitress, Christine was next level great. Kept the whole restaurant happy while it was busy for lunch. She works so quickly and efficiently. She is neat, extremely personable and truly the kind of person any restaurant owner would want being the face and force of their operation. Give that woman a raise! I got a new fashioned with no bitters, wonderful and a coconut gimlet, which tasted more of lime than coconut. For eats Home Wrecka - 1/3 lb. organic bacon sausage and serrano pepper sweet potato mash. The sweet potatoes were the best part. This was a plain sausage, not a bacon sausage. Came here with my mom and sister after going wedding dress shopping (yay!) across the street. It was a nice evening so we opted to sit on the patio. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, but I decided to go with the Republica chopped salad (no dates/no onions). It was huge and delicious! The goat cheese melted in your mouth, and the dressing tied the whole salad together. My mother got the toasted cheese and soup. I was a little concerned when I saw tomato fennel soup, but you couldn't even taste the fennel. The soup was a little chunky for my liking, but good nonetheless. My sister got the Caesar salad. Oddly enough it did not have Caesar dressing on it. I did not get a chance to try it, but she said it was good. I don't get over to this area much but I was meeting a friend and this looked like an interesting place to try out. We walked in and had our choice of seating areas we settled on the table with a wall of hockey memorabilia surrounding it. I recommend this area if you're meeting a friend and you guys want to actually talk with each other as it's not surrounded by other tables. We both ordered The Revolution burger and fries which is $14. It comes with smoked gouda, bacon, tomato, fried egg house onion ring, arugula, & srirachannaise and on brioche bun. The texture from the different items lit my tastebuds ablaze. The bacon and srirachannaise brought the heat while the brioche bun, onion ring and fried egg brought the sweet. A Shakespearean quote, "shall I compare thee to a summers day" explains my feelings about The Revolution. It didn't stop there though, the fires were perfectly cooked, not too crispy and not too soft with delicate flakes of salt on top. It was an experience for me and will be a go to when I'm in Berkley. read more

Holy Crap is the food good. We have a picky eater in the group who normally whines the whole meal about the food and even he was happy!! Good variety of comfort food, Greek inspired dishes, vegetarian and gluten free. To finish it off probably the best piece of cheesecake I've ever had. This was my second visit here. It is definitely a small place and loud on the inside. My first visit, we sat outside and the inside was noisier then the outside even with Coolidge Hwy. We came at the right time and had no wait. I'm not 100% sure who our waitress was because we had multiple people filling our water, bringing our food, etc. I came with friends and we started with the roasted cauliflower which was worth the drive. I had 2 small plates for dinner, one was the home wrecka and the other was the feta lemon fries. The home wrecka was good but again, it was better the first time I had it. Maybe it's more of a warmer weather type food. The feta lemon fries were good but a bit heavy on the lemon. I think that the menu needs to be updated if they are always going to be that lemony. The fries were not that lemony the first time I went. I will definitely come back and other then the cauliflower, I will order different items. read more

This place was a real nice time on a recent winter night! Staff was super friendly and made great suggestions throughout. The brisket quesadilla app was absolutely delicious (and a staff recommendation!). At their suggestion I went with the sweet and heat fried chicken sandwich, and that was solidly good. Fries were quite good too, a nice surprise. They also had a nice craft cocktail list that we both enjoyed some offerings from! After waiting with no acknowledgment at the bar, we looked out to see the other couple seated at the 5 top first. Left before being seated. Not a great first impression and likely wont be back. My significant other and I had a unexpected day off the other day and were looking for a nice restaurant, that was ok with cute little poochies on their patio. I remembered that a few years ago, we came to Republica and wanted to check it out again. I'm so happy we chose this place (again) and need to remember to make an effort come here more often. The food was impeccable, just as I remembered it! We ordered two small plates and the Republica Chopped. It was definitely enough food for us to take some home. One of the small plates we ordered was the calamari tacos. What a creative, innovative twist on the taco that I've never tried before. The calamari was crispy and delicious, paired perfectly with the sauce on top. The cheese pairing was surprising, yet worked so perfectly. I highly recommend you trying this dish, especially if you're a calamari fan. The other small plate we ordered was the Turnup the wings AF. What a concept! Loved these, for real! The wings were a larger size than we were under the impression, so just in case you're looking for a snack, they are filling. The wings were phenomenal and had a flavor that wasn't offensive, intriguing but incredibly enjoyable. The salad bed it came on was DELICIOUS! The Republica Chopped was amazing as well, just be prepared that it's a hefty sized salad. The wait-staff was one lady who was also the bar tender. I'll say, I understand how being short staffed can go for an individual. I don't know what staffing is like for a restaurant on a Friday afternoon, but I have to say this girl did AMAZING! Not once did she look or sound stressed, she hustled hard, was tentative and did a great job! She even was tentative to our little poochie. My only disappointment in this review is that fact that it took me so long to discover this place. Republica is hands down the best restaurant in Berkley and one of the best spots I've ever eaten at. I've now been here twice, with multiple people each time, and every item we ordered was simply superb. Decor The ambiance/decor is very unique. It's a fairly small space, and different sections are decorated completely differently than others. There's a small booth area where the walls are lined with mostly Original 6 NHL decor. The other areas of the restaurant display abstract art. I haven't had an issue waiting for a table but the place always seems to be filled which makes for great atmosphere. Drinks Republica offers a very solid selection of classic cocktails with a twist. The New Fashioned is essentially a blend of a Manhattan and Old Fashioned, two of my favorite cocktails. It tastes like a classic Manhattan but with subtle orange notes. Nicely done! The beer selection is decent but mostly bottle beers, with only one or two on draft. The good news is, the beer they happened to have on draft, Alaskan Husky IPA, was fantastic--and dangerous (great flavor with very little alcohol taste at 7% ABV). Food The real star of the show is the food. The sandwiches are incredible. Sweet and Heat Fried Chicken features a perfectly cooked piece of chicken breast drizzled with honey--outstanding. The club sandwich (grilled chicken with bacon and sweet onions) is incredible and the beet burger made me think that being vegetarian might not be so bad after all--it's THAT good. Oh and don't forget to order the bread and dip to start--you'd be hard pressed to find anything more addicting than this combo at any restaurant anywhere. Five stars all day for Republica. I am disappointed to have found Republica to be meh. We dined there because of the connection to the old Mitch's Restaurant -- I have such fond memories of the food and gathering of family/friends. We tried the Mitch's Ribs and Greek salad as well as soup and the classic Hamburger. The ribs and salad were good. The rest, not so much. There was nothing to distinguish the hamburger from the hundreds of others I've had over the years. The fries were limp and cold. Service was ok. Four years later, Republic is still one of my go to spots. I love their unique cocktails, varied menu, and intimate dining experience. I highly recommend the plato's potatoes, toasted cheese and tomato soup,the fish and chips, chicken chili, blt pasta, the revolution and village burgers. The food is always excellent quality with friendly service. The worst service! Immediately sat at a table outside which was awesome, but that's it! Waited 25 minutes and no service. No one even came to give an update as to why we were waiting. We finally got ahold of the young man that sat us down and told him that a server had not come over. He said he would get someone. Another 5 min. Had a weird spicy dressing on it- yes, spicy - that wasn't even close to Caesar. My husband's lamb burger was a dry hockey puck. He ate his out of starvation but I sent mine back (and choked down my weird tasting martini - didn't have it in me to return it too). Before doing so the server said "okay will remove the salad but charge for the chicken." I laughed and said "no, the chicken is in the same salad with the mysterious and disgusting spicy dressing."
