I never leave Yelp reviews. Nick, Drew, and Ashley (I think was her name) were fantastic at the bike shop. I blew out two tires on my EMTB yesterday. I walked the bike over to another bike shop and the tech told me I trashed my wheels and needed new ones. Out of desperation, I came to REI for a second opinion, and I'm glad I did. I found my new go to bike shop. Drew took meticulous care of the wheels. He filed down the damaged portion to leave a clean seam, cleaned out my old sealant, and put new sealant in with new tires. The wheels were incredibly clean when he was done with them. I came in thinking I needed to buy new wheels and new tires, but Drew and his team were able to fix me up with just new tires. I always applaud businesses that have a repair first mindset. If a repair is possible, I'm confident this team would figure it out. So if another bike shop or tech gives you bad news, come see Drew and his team at this REI for a second opinion. What a breath of fresh air this experience was. They earned a repeat customer. read more

REI is the one stop shop for everything outdoor! I've purchased hand held water bottles here for running, workout gear and etc. Next I'm headed here to get a headlamp so I can use it for a trail race I'm doing soon! The customer service is great too. Everyone here is extremely helpful, knowledgeable and will go out of their way to find a solution. I've also seen camping supplies and things of that nature here if that is your thing. It's worth checking out...if there's something you aren't able to find in another outdoor store, they may have it here! read more

Love the company but this store has plenty to work on. I spent a solid 30-40 minutes in the store happily strolling through the outer wear from the current sale that started last week. I don't know how many green vests passed by me just to give me a glance to size me up to see if I was actually buying something. Compared to the Dallas store, the Plano location has the spirit of a broken toy. I remember this place used to be upbeat and positive. I tried spending 10 minutes in footwear but still got the same response. I didn't feel like spending money at a place that I didn't get acknowledged... not even a smile or a nod. I ordered something online and was all set to pick it up from this location. First, it didn't come in on time. I it was estimated for Tuesday and I had planned to pick it up on Wednesday for use the next day, Thursday, which happened to be Thanksgiving Day. It didn't come in until Friday. The estimated delivery was actually pushed back until Saturday, which would have been a disaster because I don't live in Dallas and I was leaving early Saturday. Still, I ended up having to purchase something else to use on Thursday because of this delayed order. Once I went to pick it up, the process was far more complicated than it should have been. The whole point of ordering online and picking up from a store is not having to wait in-store, right? Wrong, it would seem REI thinks. The employee couldn't find my order for the first 10 minutes, then she had problems scanning it out to me. I had to present the order confirmation as well as an ID and our membership card, which were under my boyfriend's name -- I was lucky he was with me. Then I had to sign a few things as well. Ugh. REI doesn't seem to understand "convenience." Perhaps the employees and executives should spend sometime indoors and on the web to learn how to improve their customer service. :P read more

I could easily give REI 1 star. I've bought quite a few things at REI, I'm even a member. They have a really great return policy and they carry some really terrific products. Their stores are amazing and the Denver location is nothing short of awe inspiring beauty. Add all that to roots that include Jim Whittaker, the first american to summit Everest being their 1st full time employee and you've got one stellar line up of credentials. But when you consider how much more you'll pay for things at REI, all the history, all the heavy hardware and beautiful store fronts and nearly unlimited return policy doesn't justify the increased cost for me. As I've gotten more experienced with my sport and knowledge of the products I end up buying my outdoor sporting gear from other local retailers usually for quite a bit less than what I have spent at REI. read more

My review is just for this location, as I'm a co-op member and expect to remain so. I went to this location after my tennis shoes met an untimely demise, and had 2 specific pairs of women's Merrell's in mind to try. I found both on the shelf, and alas, there was no one in the shoe section to bring my size. I think once in my life the display size has matched my own, and today didn't change that. Well, since there were no employees available on the floor ( and I think 3 other customers in the store at the time ), I went to check the sale rack for any other deals. Upon return to the shoe section for one more try, there still was no one to help me find my size. I'd gladly order online if I were confident the Merrell's would work for me and I wouldn't have to deal with a possible return. Disappointing to get no help. Guess I'll go over to DSW and hope for the best. read more

This was a smaller location with a more limited inventory than I'm used to but still a treat to walk into an REI. I wish I had one closer to home. Only complaint I had with this visit was that no one ever greeted me or asked if I needed any help. I know that this may be welcomed by many but I'm still a bit old fashioned and like the personal sales approach. Now I went to this store a couple of times, every time I am in Dallas I make a stop here. REi is already a great store to shop, but the employees here are very friendly and help you with things inside and outside. Last time I was there I wanted to eat something, so I asked for a good sandwich shop, something not chain. It took some employees but one knew a great shop only a couple of minutes away, in most other stores they would have told me to google it or pointed to the next McDonald. Now this store is not about pointing out towards food places, so I of course went there to buy something. The people that work there are knowledgeable in the area they work in, and if they don't know an answer, they will find someone in the store that can answer the question. Unfortunately they didn't have all the things I was looking for, but they called all of their stores in the area, so I know if I can get it at the other stores or not. First off I'll say this I've been to several REI locations in the US from Denver, to Colorado Springs, to 2 in New Mexico, to Austin and the other one in Dallas. This was the first time going to this location because I was in the area. Now in all my experiences with REI I rarely get so much as a greet or a can I help you. I don't usually need help I know what I'm looking for when I'm there. I assume they assume I don't do a lot of the stuff they sell or maybe the way I'm dress or maybe it's because I'm a big guy lol. I work in retail so I can't help but notice when I'm not helped in a store. Today however I stopped in looking for a way to hang my bike in my garage. I was greeted the minute I stepped through the door! Already I'm like wow I was greeted at REI! Then I was helped out by Andy and Adam who I believe work in the bike section. Both gave me their honest opinions on which was the best bike rack available and it wasn't just the most expensive one they had. Got what I needed and I was on my way. Then I decided I was gonna look at the shoes because I want to go camping memorial weekend, and what do I hear when I walk in the shoe area? " Can I help you out?" Again!! Wow! This store is on their game! Hands down the best REI I've been to. I didn't get the shoes today just the bike hanger rack thingy they recommended but I'll be back again for my shoes memorial week. read more

Whatever you do be careful about buying items from the garage sale. I bought a suitcase that was on sale with some scuff marks and I got home and the zipper was completely broken. I took it back and they said garage sale items cannot be returned. The manager was not helpful at all. I paid $80 for a worthless suitcase that I can't use. Shame on my for not reading the garage sale rules, but if someone bought something from my garage sale and it was broken I would have been a lot more human about it if they brought it back and tried to make it right. I spent the weekend at Caprock Canton camping and hiking the South Prong and Haynes Ridge trails. Coming down a steep descent I slid on loose rocks. When I planted my Black Diamond trekking poles one snapped as I fell. REI replaced them after a year and a half. This is why my money gets spent here. Thank you REI! read more

I love REI, it's a huge toy store in so many ways. So often I go and want so many things, but I hesitate because of the cost, even knowing that what they carry is usually the best of what is out there, thus the cost. One thing I do suggest is to get a membership with them, that will help offset the cost at the end of the year when you get a dividend check based on what you spent there that year, plus you access to the sale room! read more

Went to this REI store tonight with a good buddy as he wanted to buy some shoes for climbing. The store was cleaned and organized and we could easily find the climbing section. A friendly employee asked if he could help us and then he gave my buddy a larger shoe size than the rack had so he ended up buying the shoes. I normaly shop REI once a year to buy a couple cold weather items. So, just completed my yearly visit. Bought a pair of warm slippers and a hat. The lady that helped me find my items, Shela, was very nice. We found the items I wanted in the color I wanted. Now checkout time, and the reason for only two stars. REI has a frequent buyers program that I am not a member of and do not want to be a member of. The sales clerk at the register became extremely rude when I told her no, I am not a member. She ask the reason, and I replied I had no reason other than I did not want to be a member. She became visibly angry and tossed the receipt on the counter without saying a word. Never offered s bag for my items. To managment at REI: you need to get a handle on this type of attitude before it hurts your business further. read more

Why would I ever become a member of this store, and pay them to rip me off? I bought a pair of cycling pants there for $35 when their new store opened in Winter Park, and loved them. I thought, i'll buy them here from now on. Go in today, a couple of months later, and now the same pants are $45! Go on Amazon and the same pants are $35, with free shipping! Really, $10 increase in a couple of months? These guys better wake up in this internet shopping market, or they will not be around long. I really love going to REI stores. I went in to buy my first pair of Chacos and got help by a really nice guy got really excited and did his best to find exactly the riget size, style and width for me. He gave me great advise on adjusting the sandals and was really excited to be teaching me. Sadly they only get one shipment of Chacos a summer but he gave me a slip and showed me to the manager who helped me get the shoes i want. When i told the manager that i needed them in a few days she tried to help me find a REI store on my way to Colorado so i could just pick them up on my way avoiding the extra shipment fee. If you are even semi-serious into climbing avoid them. They do not carry what they have on website and most workers have no clue what they are speaking about. Called them about 6 times for bouldering shoes and got conflicting answers and absolutely no help. I went into the store twice checking out packs for an extended backpacking trip. Ben in the camping section was awesome! He answered all my questions and helped me test one out. I ended up buying from the REI outlet from their app. It was a better price and a color I prefer. I took this into the store to see if they would help me fit the shoulder straps. Again it was Ben to the rescue. Even though that location didn't get my money, I was still treated as a valued customer. If you are in the Plano area drop by see if Ben can help you with some new gear. He is knowledgeable without talking down or sounding smug.
