I love REI but this particular store never has anyone who is actually able to help customers. They don't have nearly enough people on the floor and with these sorts of purchases (at these sorts of prices!) you want to make sure you're getting the right thing. read more

Came here on opening weekend! The lot was packed with people, vendors, free food and give aways. Although the staff was very busy on opening day they were very helpful. Love this place! So much to see but very expensive. Most items can be found on Amazon and other stores for way cheaper. Some employees have very obvious racial preferences and based their customer service on that. Valerie in the shoe department is awesome! I was thrilled to get an REI in our local shopping center. It's been there for a couple of years now and I have shopped there several times. They have a very large selection of outdoor sports gear. I have uniformly received great service from the knowledgeable and friendly staff. While the prices are on the high side of competitive, you get to try on clothing, feel and evaluate the quality of products, and get in-person advice on your selection -- none of which is available in an online only setting. They also have a fantastic return policy, which I have used. Shopping locally is also a big plus. This is a co-opp so you can join for a relatively small fee and get a percentage of your purchases back in an annual rebate usable at REI stores or their website. read more

whoever helped me was pretty rude and made me feel uncomfortable. asked help to find a displayed item and she told me to take the displayed one because it is new too. so i was like you want me to physically take the table down and fold it and pack it up? and that was when she was like where is that item and started looking for one. she checked inventory on her phone and said there should be 2 available but she never found it. told me there is also 2 available in Santa Monica and asked if i could drive there. so she wanted me to go to another store cause she couldn't find it. she was nice at the end but probably cause she knew i was angry at that point. i was at the store around 1:30 today and she was doing something at the right side of the store packing something on that desk thing. ruined my day. read more

This past visit, my first time in R.E.I., has changed my perspective on shopping and consumption. Why buy those Calvin Klein jeans on sale when you can invest in clothes that are -DURABLE -LONG LASTING -MULTI PURPOSE -SUSTAINABILITY MADE I mean it folks... R.E.I and the brands they carry are on to something. If the people who work here are right, the pair of jeans I bought (prAna) can be used for rock climbing, hiking, everyday wear, and more. Plus, the sales associate had on a pair that were three years old and they looked new. The rain coat I bought (marmot) was $70 but looks like it will last my travelpacking trip without ripping. Plus it's a windbreaker, which an associate explained to me I will need when I hike volcanoes in Guatemala. Also got a pair of keen hiking boots for $130 that are comfortable, breathable, not to heavy, and will work for city and hikes. They are clearly really great quality. Finally, I found an osprey travel pack 55 liters on sale for $130!!!! It was the last one and I was so lucky to get it! The employee helped me try it on, fit it, put weight in it, and showed me everything it can do. I was really happy with the service. That brings me to my final point... the employees here are extremely helpful, friendly,and patient. They answered all my questions Plus more. One guy helped me try on a shoe that i was planning to buy online and advised me the whole way through. I love how they all have different outdoor related interests and most of them have traveled or trekked. Plus, they really know the specs and even use the products themselves. And they are real people, they will give you travel or hiking advice and are super genuine and present with you. They are clearly passionate about what they do! The service really went beyond what I expected. I am a member now.. can't wait to check out the garage sale and maybe try a class here!! Not only do I love the merchandise but also their classes. I have taken a variety of courses in the last few years, including a women's backpacking class in Ojai. It was such a great experience. I am not a camper or much of a sportsperson, so I had no reason to go to REI until recently. I'm off to Africa next week and there was a list of last minute purchases that a friend said I could find at REI. I was lost the minute I got into the huge store, so after walking around, I asked for help and an angel, Crystalyn, was sent to do just that. My purchases took us all over the store (never could have found anything on my own)--insect repellant, a blow up seat cushion, an international electrical adapter, the list goes on. Nope thumbs down on this REI, so was driving north on the Friday morning of Labor Day weekend, from LA to the sequoias and seen this store off to the side so decided to stop and get maps for my excursion. My companion and I walked around the store for awhile looking around, after all it was her first time in a REI. And here I was explaining how wonderful it is, after all I am a CO-OP member. So I found the maps I was looking for and proceeded to the checkout line. There where already people in the line and eventually a couple people behind us. The wait was becoming longer, so a manger walked by and said sorry fir the wait I have another cashier coming. Hmm I would think that if you have two cashiers that are having issues with the lines , as a manager you would step up and either man a register or take care of the customers issues. Instead of just walking away. So after a little bit longer. I just placed my items on a shelf and walked out. And another customer on line even made a remark, "Your losing customers " I was very disappointed and made my purchases, later on during my trip. I'll stick with the REI closer to my home. I must start by saying I don't write many reviews. In fact I prefer to write when something positive rather than negative occurs as I feel there are too many that jump on yelp to bash businesses. This review is to inform REI that they need to better train their employees on being sensitive to the way they treat customers under their new style of social distancing. Today whine there I went to the shoe area. They had ropes set up with 2 people working that area and 8 guests. It wasn't clear but apparently everyone was supposed to line up at one end and they help you one by one. I was behind the ropes and looking from a very far distance at the hiking shoes. A girl with long straight dark hair said "you have to wait your turn." I responded "I'm not trying anything on...just looking." She very sarcastically responded "Yes but you have to wait in line just like every other customer here." She laughed as she was saying it and the customer she was helping laughed nervously with her. Every customer there turned and looked at me. I was so embarrassed that I turned and walked away as I heard her saying to the other guests "Everyone has to wait. She's no different." There was absolutely no reason on their opening day for her to try to shame me. Side note...I'm a New Yorker and have very thick skin! read more

I love this place! It's the only place where I buy travel gear and clothes. They supply quality merino wool and I am very happy about this! The customer service is also great. I am very happy that they supply quality backpacks as well as running shoes. I was looking at a particular running shoe and so far I only had found it in amazon and then a friend of mine told me REI has it and I was so happy I could try it on before I buy it! read more

Mind you, I made eye contact with at least 3 staff members and several just walked right by. i came here looking for hiking boots. i had done some research online but don't know that much about them. to be honest, i was feeling lazy and was willing to just spend what i needed to instead of shopping around for the best deal. their associate helped me out, going by the ones i had favorited online and helping me choose the best ones for my needs. he sized me and i picked a pair. before checking out, they told me about their great loyalty program. being that i don't shop at places like this often, i didn't sign up, but it's seriously a great program if you shop there at least twice a year. they also offer so many cool activities and rewards for being a part of the co-op. their selection is huge and their associates are super knowledgable. read more

REI staff is almost always stellar. I just placed an order with a representative who was just so nice and helpful. What I find challenging is their new return policy. I moved to Belgium and get to the states every 1-2 years, so I am not able to return items that don't fit or do not hold up well with wear. I wish REI would reconsider or be even the slightest bit flexible for people overseas and with extenuating circumstances. read more

KEVIN the cashier was extremely rude and unprofessional. He made a rude remark insinuating I had worn the jacket (with tags in tact and receipt in hand) I purchased not even 24 hours ago. He seemed extremely confused through the whole process, not sure if he was high or just poorly trained. First off, my BF and I LOVE REI ....this review is for this location SPECIFICALLY the manager of the bike department... We come here every week if not multiple times a week to shop around any and all equipment for the several outdoor activities we do. Mountain biking and bike -packing has become a new hobby of ours. My BF needed to get a new mountain bike, and after MONTHS of shopping and doing research, found the perfect bike within his budget. We found a few we liked, but decided to buy from REI because of amazing customer service, warranty program, etc. We buy the bike, go for a quick ride on a paved road. So far so good. Then we go on the mountain. Super easy BEGINNER TRAIL near LA. At the end of the ride, the bike was MESSED UP. so many issues that should NOT have resulted from an easy ride. Several problems that were not really fixable leads us to believe something about the bike was off from the beginning. We take back to this REI location less than a week after purchase and first thing they recommend is we use our free bike tune-up under warranty. Look, we're not idiots, we can tell the bike is damaged beyond repair. We ask for a return and exchange for the same bike, cause something was clearly wrong with this one. Now. Here's where my issue lies. Brittany, the manage (?) of the bike area, begins treating us like we are criminals. After trying to convince us several times to do the included tune up, we had to put our foot down and say LOOK, we've been loyal customers for several years. Never made a single return. Spend thousands of dollars here every year, we just want the damn new bike already. After finally agreeing, she get on her walkie and says "the bike is trashed." OK SO NOW YOU AGREE THAT THE BIKE IS TRASHED AND ADMIT IT IN FRONT OF US and you were going to give us back a trashed bike that was beyond repair that we just purchased last week??? On top of it, she's trying to tell us that "we weren't using the bike for what it was properly meant for" I'm sorry WHAT?!?! WHO THE F ARE YOU TO TELL US WHERE WE CAN AND CANT GO WITH OUR PURCHASE, are you my mother ?!? They also suggested returning the bike and purchasing another one that was 3-4 times more expensive than the one we had purchased. We did our research, this was the bike we wanted within our budget, thank you but no thank you. After much effort, she then agrees to switch out the damaged bike with a new one, but says "okayyyyy but if I go into your account and find out youve returned everything you ever purchased were gonna have a problem." Listen Brittany dear, don't patronize me. You are literally our age so talking down to us was extremely rude and disrespectful, she needs to be fired. She also explained how my BFs account would have to be "flagged" or something from this point forward, which is total BS that we've been treated this way. Went there to look for a carrier for my toddler for our Yosemite trip. Ended up not actually getting one but the reps were very helpful, knowledgeable, not pushy. Came in with a friend looking for a cost efficient, easy to use and effective water filter and an ultra lightweight and compact winter sleeping bag for our upcoming camping trip. We asked a store employee named Ian for help with our very specific requests. Ian was super knowledgeable and helped us find exactly what we needed with ease. I've been an REI member for the past 5 years and this was by far my best experience in any store. Ian gave us excellent advice based on his personal experience and our camping trip was made so much better by his recommendations. read more

Very nice new location with great design and easy-to-find products. Definitely an upgrade compared to older locations. My issue with this one is the bike department. I went there during the sale, ready to buy a $799 Co-Op brand mountain bike, plus helmet and other gear. The first time, the salesperson was new and untrained. Tried to explain the difference between a DRT 1.1 and a 1.2 by pointing at a city bike and going "see, this one doesn't even have front shocks, but the 1.2 does!". If you're going to work for a store in a specific area, maybe do the minimum of research on their own brand. And REI, maybe train your sales personnel better? I went back there today to buy the bike. A person was being helped by a salesperson (let's call him Jon) that really looked like they knew their stuff, so I waited. He saw me, asked if I needed help and called another salesperson... who was the one aforementioned. I said I'd rather wait, he understood. 15 min later, Jon is helping a new customer who arrived after me! 25 min later he was still helping him, so I left. I'll be buying my bike and gear at the Woodland Hills location or elsewhere. It really looks like they need more specialists, especially during the sale. read more
