This place is just ridiculous. I wasn't happy with an item that I bought and I wanted to return it. I went to this store and the manager of this store who's name is John G. Was just sheer rude and unprofessional. Picture of this manger is attached. He didn't wanted to take back my return. He was unfriendly and has no command sense how to help or talk with a customer. I don't know how he got this manager position but he was lacking basic customer service skills. Rei's policy Customer is king. This is not the case with this store and with this manager. The management should seriously look into his rudeness and take action. John was unprofessional how he handled this situation and unfair. I'm super disappointed in Rei because of this incident. I have been a member with REI since 2017 and I am now considering after this negative encounter with John to cancel my membership and never give Rei my business anymore nor buying anything from them ever again. As a hiking/camping newb, I came here to look at tents and other camping gear just to get a sense of what I would need for an upcoming trip to Yosemite. The store has easy parking but we came here like 30 minutes before it closed and was assisted in our tent search by John G. John went above and beyond to explain the differences between the tents and tell us about his favorite tent, which happened to be an REI brand but I was familiar with it already so it was nice to hear a little bit more about it. He also showed me the sleeping bags and answered my questions about bears. I'm a bit paranoid about running into bears on my first camping trip so he definitely relieved my concerns to the extent that it's nice to know this place sells air horns I can use to scare away wild animals if they get too close. We ended up buying John's recommended tent and Leslie at the register was patient enough to explain the membership program to us even though the store was pretty much closed at that point. Great customer service here and I will return to REI if/when I have more outdoorsy needs. read more

The one stop shop for all things outdoors. They can outfit you for everything you need from clothing, equipment and everything else in between. Their staff is very knowledgeable and the items they carry are most always top notch and field tested. Any questions you may have will almost assuredly be answered at REI. There are sections for footwear, packs, bicycles, etc... They have it all. Membership is $20 and 20% off all your purchases for the year roll over to next year. I may be missing a detail or two so check with an REI employee on specifics. We picked up a Yeti tumbler recently and it had the new mag-slider lid on it. The old ones did not have that feature. It's so good. REI.. It's like a toy store for the outdoor enthusiast. My only gripe is that prices tend to be high so look for sales and just be a smart shopper. Just had an amazing experience getting outfitted for our annual family camping trip. Buying packs, water bladders, lanterns, flashlights, duffel bags, first aid kits and camp chairs. Mark N. made it a smooth and efficient experience. The man is a wealth of knowledge and was infinitely patient. This REI is fairly small compared to the Santa Monica location. The staff greeted me as I entered. So I felt acknowledged. However no one asked if I needed assistance, which makes me think their sales are off the charts. It is probably due to that fact that a lot, if not all, Sport Authorities and Sport Chalet closed down. Any ways, I found what I wanted. They retrieved the sizes I needed and also gave me directions to locations that had it in-stock. The location were out of the way, so I just ordered it online. Great for camping and outdoor needs! Kind of expensive, but there are deals often enough, also they send out coupons! Truth be told, there aren't many outdoor stores, maybe you'll find something at Sports Chalet at the Santa Anita Mall or Big 5 on Colorado and Rosemead... that's all I can think of for this immediate vicinity. Quality of gear is always fantastic and what I do is order from http://www.rei.com/outlet and check their overstock section, then whatever deal I find I can have it shipped to this location for free pick-up! I've gotten an awesome deal on a sleeping-bag this way. Another time for deals is their monthly "garage sales" of used, returned or damaged gear in their parking lot outside. REI just dumps piles of gear, clothing, shoes... you name it and shoppers just go at it. You have to be part of their membership to shop though. Do go early since it's first come first served and good stuff gets snapped up quickly. From various shopping excursions I found a Jetboil for cheap, a really nice jacket, pants and my favorite backpacking pack that all were practically new but just returned for some random reason. Let me start this review by saying that I love REI, just not this location and staff. This store was my first REI store that I had ever gone to. I use to shop here for chalk and other rock climbing gear when I lived in the area. I never really had any long enough conversations with staff to even see if they were nice or rude. All that I did know was that the staffs mood would instantly get shot down once you told them you didn't want a membership. (I purchased a membership later from the Burbank location.) I recently went it to this location for the first time in a while with a pair of rock climbing shoes that I used for a week and wasn't satisfied with the fit of the shoes. Keep in mind that this purchase was made about 4 months ago, but Ive just had them in the trunk of my car. I walk in the store and wait in line like a normal customer should until the next worker was available. Once It was my turn, I am greeted by John G. I told him I wasn't satisfied with them and the fit. He then adds that he cannot return them as there is "wear and tear" on them. I understand if that is store policy, but the shoes only had a tad bit of chalk on them. No wear and no tear. He then claims that the most he can do is give me $23 in store credit for a pair of shoes that I bought for $141 dollars. I told him that I initially purchased this membership with REI, because they had told me that If I wasn't satisfied with my purchase then I could return them anytime within the year. I did that. And they declined. Another worker by the name of "Leslie J." tells me that they look extremely worn and torn. Keep in mind the shoes had nothing wrong with them. It made me a tad bit frustrated as everyone else that had seen them had said they basically look new with a bit of chalk on them, but when I go to the two worker they call it wear and tear. They then pass unnecessary side comments such as "Well, you should have come in the week you didn't like them." Really? How is that relevant to the issue that you are calling them worn and torn when they are new. I leave the store and complain to the helpline, which were very helpful, and leave a complaint. 2 days later, I take it to the Manhattan Beach location for them to tell me it looks brand new and no issues. This added to my frustration, but am also thankful to the Manhattan Beach location for being so nice about everything and also even apologetic on Santa Anita's behalf. If you prefer a better customer service experience, I definitely recommend the Manhattan Beach location. read more

I have to give REI five stars for their customer service! I was in the neighborhood and stopped by REI. I noticed a pair of Keen waterproof sandals I had bought at rei.com were on sale. I asked customer service if I could get a price reduction. After looking at the records, the guy says that normally he could give a price reduction within 30 days, but I was 3 days late. Mind you, I had no idea the product I bought went on sale and was there randomly, so I asked him politely if there was anything he could do? He thought about it for 30 seconds and said he'd let it slide this time. Yippee! I got $33 back for the shoes I bought and couldn't be happier with REI. I lived around the area for over 7 years, I go to the 24 hours fitness next door and drive by the place countless amount of times yet never set food in this REI until this past weekend. I usually go to the REI in Santa Monica where i used to work. I love REI's, I hope they get to stay in business forever, (dont take all their business away Amazon Prime!!) The customer service is always excellent and very informative. They had a 25% hydro flask sale that lasted through this weekend, I fought a few for gifts and another one for myself. I was taking my time deciding what colors and what lids I wanted to purchase, during the span of 15 mins we probably encountered and talked to 4-5 employees who came to offer help, suggestions, opinions and just being friendly. A special touch that you can never get from ordering things online. I ended up picking 3 different bottles and 5 different lids. Will be coming back when I take my next international trip!! read more

The website is so poorly designed and when you log into your account, you would expect to see membership information alongside your account information, right? I've been shopping here for years. Sadly, customer service has noticeably declined. Today was the worst experience. As I walked in, I asked a nice associate for direction in finding what I was there to purchase. The employee she was talking to started to walk away and nearly ran me over. Didn't say excuse me, pardon me, I had to jump out of his way to avoid being stepped on or possibly even hit with his body. It was as if i wasn't there. He never acknowledged me as he kept walking. I commented to the female employee how he almost hit me, as I was in disbelief he could be so unaware. She said, "Well, we all need to be aware of our surroundings," as if it was my fault he walked in my direction & I had to jump out of his way. I once again said, "he would have run me over!!" To what she then said, "Well, yeah, I'll let him know!" Wth!? I obtained what I needed (lady was helpful). I then went to grab something else I needed. I was in the shoe department and asked where I could find gaiters. The shoe guy didn't speak. He just pointed to the wall across the way. His demeanor was dismissive. Apparently, I disturbed him. My daughter, who doesn't normally shop with me said "wow, they're rude here!" When I went to pay, I wasn't greeted. She rang me up and asked if I wanted a receipt and I wasn't thanked for my purchase. I know people are used to online shopping, but I'm not one of those people. It is the reason why I promote places like REI to shop at, but after today's experience, i may rethink that. Too bad people have forgotten the importance of good customer service. Edit: We filled out the survey that's mentioned in our receipt with this story and management quickly reached out to us with an apology and gift card. While it was very nice they did so, I really just don't want situations like the one I wrote below to happen again. Just left the store. Had an incredibly awkward experience. My boyfriend and I like to browse the store and there was a real nice guy who helped us with dog saddles but afterwards we were approached by the same woman twice asking if we needed help. I've worked retail before and I know a lot of the times this is done to deter shoplifting. After we checked out with our two items, the same woman approached the cashier who was helping us almost as if to confirm if we'd taken anything. And to make matters worse our cashier said "And you have a bike part???" we both were confused by the statement but I think I understood what happened. Someone on the floor must have communicated to the cashiers that it looks like we were trying to steal something ("a bik and that was the cashier's friendly way of reminding us to put up on the counter to pay for it. Honestly it pissed me off and it felt a little bit discriminatory. We were a few of the Hispanics of the store (the majority of the clientele being Caucasian and Asian) so I definitely feel like we were being targeted. read more

Very wide selection of dehydrated food and mountain bike accessories, camping clothing, tents, mummy bags, etc. Picked up some of the dehydrated chili because I had good memories of it from when I used to go camping as a kid. But significantly out of my price range. If you have unlimited income this would be a good place to stop at. For those of us that unfortunately can't afford the $300 2-person tent here, but can afford the $150 8-person cabin tent from Costco or Wal-Mart, you may want to save your time. May come back for smaller things like bug spray, more dehydrated food, propane canisters, etc but will have to save our tent and sleeping bag purchases for elsewhere unfortunately. read more

Just found this place, and I love it. I searched several other sporting goods stores for good hiking trainers, and even Dicks and Big5 had a shoddy collection. I happened upon REI, and was so excited to see they had every single brand I had been looking for. The sales team were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I must have tried on 12 different pair, and they were happy to help me out. They were able to explain to me with much detail the difference between certain shoes and make recommendations based on what I will be using them for. The big rock on which you can test out your shoes to simulate hiking was an added bonus. It really helped finalize my decision, actually. Even the checkout crew were amazing. The guy who checked me out was extremely knowledgeable about my upcoming hiking excursion, and had some helpful tips for my trip. I usually hate when store clerks ask me about my purchases or seem to be prying into my business, but this was like talking with old friends. I checked out some of their other gear , and they really have everything. Some of the prices are higher than what you can find on Amazon, but here, you have the benefit of being able to try them on. They did upsell me to purchase their lifetime membership for $20, which I would normally resent; but this one was a good deal because you can return shoes without a receipt for a full year, even if you've worn them. It's nice to know that I can try these shoes out in some local hikes, and if I find that they don't work for my feet, I'm not stuck with them. (The membership also came with a $20 gift card, so it's pretty much breaking even.) All in all, I wish I would have found this place years ago, but it's better late than never. I love going to REI to look at overly priced hiking equipment. But I never actually purchase anything original price when I am here. I always wait for the Used Gear Sale. I saw a sign on the door when I came here yesterday that there will be a used gear sale on Dec 31 from 10 am- 2 pm (in case other people want to wait in line with me). REI has a large selection of exercise, outdoorsy, equipment for the active and adventurous person. They used to have a rock climbing wall in the far end corner of the store that was free to REI members, but that is gone now when I went. The items that REI does sell is of high quality (so you do get what you pay for, but again, I always wait for the used gear sales) and the return policy is excellent. They will accept any returns indefinitely (but items at the used gear sales are final sale). The staff working here are always very friendly and very knowledgeable of the department they are working in. I suspect they also hike, bike, etc (whatever department they are working in) and speak from honest truthful personal experience. I hate going to a store when the sales associate knows nothing at all about the products they are selling and the experience of using them. read more

Been to REI lots of times. Overall, i had a pretty good experience and I'd say this store is pretty decent. Only one thing i need to mention, first time it happened. I brought in my bike for a service. Turn over was pretty quick. Did a pretty good job on servicing my bike. I give them credit for that. Only thing, an employee didnt check for my receipt when i came to pick up my bike. Anybody can just pick up my $5000 dollar bike and pay $60 for the service. They need to make sure to give the bike to the right person. Luckily i was the right person when it was picked up. Other than that, REI is a great store, great employees. I really enjoy shopping at REI for their products have real quality build, for the items I've purchased at least. A few weeks back I went to get a wilderness pass for the Cucamonga Peak, they didn't have it. What's worse is that they tried selling me the adventure pass even after confirming with a few other employees that this was the pass that I needed. Okay, not so knowledgeable. No big deal, I can't expect everyone there to know all the facets of every sport they sell equipment for. Then I go to ask about upgrading my road bike (the cassette specifically) at the bike section of the store. The first person I speak with doesn't know much about the parts I need so he asks another gentleman who comes out from the back. I tell him what I'm looking for and that I am new to working on upgrading my cassette and drivetrain. He looks at me and says that I will need to upgrade a lot, crosses his arms, doesn't say anything more and gives me this "I'm smarter than you look." I was pretty fed up by this point I said okay, turned my back and thanked him as he tried to reestablish a seller's "helpful" dialogue. I've come to this REI on several occasions (weekdays and weekends), and the employees have always been super helpful. They are always very patient and make sure that they've answered my questions before moving on to help somebody else. I came in on a busy Saturday to try on some hiking shoes. There were several customers wanting to try on shoes and ask questions, but there were many employees in the area who were available to help out and answer questions. Ivan was extremely knowledgeable and I ended up walking out of there with a new pair of hiking shoes that I love!
