It's always interesting to return to one of my old stomping grounds. A lot has changed in the area, but this Big 5 still remains as one of the constants. These days, I only come here as this is one of the race packet pick-up locations for the Rose Bowl Half Marathon. For Saturday, pick-up started at 9 am, so I thought I would miss the rush and come a little bit later. I arrived at about 10:30 am only to find a long line that wrapped around the corner, all the way to Jack-in-the-Box. Parking has always been extremely scarce for this store, but for some reason, nobody parked at the curb right in front of their parking lot. That's where I parked before getting in line. After getting my bib inside, the race shirts were being distributed right outside of the entrance. If I still lived in the area, I would probably still come here as they always have pretty good deals. Everything about the store still looked the same. With two kids and their growing feet, shoe shopping is impossible online. This is where Big 5 comes in. Jacob in the shoe department provided us with excellent customer service. He was very helpful, polite, attentive, and patient with us. He was great with multitasking running to the back room for us and helping several other customers at the same time. I haven't been to one in quite a while, and I recall the last one I visited in the LA area was kinda run down looking. Sporting goods stores seem to be a dying breed, especially with Sports Chalet and Sports Authority now non existent. This Big 5 location is located behind Jack In The Box and across the street from Sprouts. This Big 5 is located on a corner, making it easy to find. My husband and I came by this store last night, looking to buy some life vests. We just came from the REI store in Arcadia because an employee told us that, that particular location does not sell life vests. So we decided to give Big 5 a shot and if they didn't have any then we were going to Dick's Sporting Goods next. After parking, we walked in and just headed toward the left side of the store and assumed the if there were life vests, they would be where the kayaks and fishing gear were. We couldn't find any and saw an employee, whom was helping another customer, and asked if they sold life vests. He told us yes and that it should be in the area we were at. He also said that he would help us find it after he is done helping the customer he was with. After looking around this section again, still couldn't find it. But my husband ended up walking over to the other side of the store in the water sports section and found it (that employee eventually found us and just wanted to make sure if we still needed his help or not. I suppose he didn't know where the life vests were either since he pointed us in the wrong direction). After trying a few on, we ended up finding 2 Marvel themed life vests (adult size and now we match. Wished they had a size for my dog so she can match too. She has a life vest but not in Marvel print) that had everything we were looking for. And the best part was they were ~33% off (most likely since it is towards the end of the season). I do want to mention that for life vests, it's important to try it on before buying blindly on line. Depending on what your intention is for the life vest, there really are some things you should be aware of. For us, we need life vests for our kayaks, to be used in generally calm waters. My life vest should not be too bulky (which can cause you to get over heated quickly and also be uncomfortable to wear), have plenty of room in the arm holes (so I have enough room to row my oar comfortably and not have my arms be restricted while out on the water), not be too long (needs to be comfortable when I sit down) and fit correctly, but snug (but not too tight or will be uncomfortable). Anyways, after we found our life vests, we headed to the register and paid for our items. Wait time to pay wasn't too long and service was friendly and painless for the most part. Overall, we had a good shopping experience. And am actually surprised that Big 5 had what we were looking for. I never really liked Big 5 and had always thought they were a low budget and dirty store. But after this experience, I will definitely perceive them in a different light. read more

Drove to Big 5 in Pasadena to purchase some target practice ammunition only to find out that they claim that the permits they need to sell ammunition are not valid at this time. Big waste of time to go over there. There was no estimation as to when they might get their permits straightened out. Seems like a retailer like this should have their ducks in a row. I went into the store to return 2 Big 5 brand Rio X-Frame Military Cots that I bought last summer. This is their heavy duty cot made to hold 300 pounds. The store mamager Christa certainly could have used more customer service training. She was so abrupt and talked to us like we were trying to cheat her. She wouldn't even look at the problem that caused the return. She just disappeared for a few minutes and handed us a card with corporate's number on it and then said to call them (and stop bothering her). Big 5 should back up products with their name on it. Both cots developed issues with the nylon loops which help to stretch the bed nice and tight. All the loops on all the cots are starting to fray and will eventually cut. Big 5 imports this cheap stuff from China and makes no attempt to put forth a better product. I'm sure they know about this loop wearing out, yet they continue to sell the product. They've even raised the price by $10 since last summer. I very disappointed with the quality of product and especially the customer service. Now I'm out more than $100 and have to buy new cots. Big 5 won't do a thing. Don't buy here at all. I should have paid more $ for an REI cot... read more

Customer service needs improvement! We stood in line to pay for our purchase according to the signage marked on the floor. On the other side of the aisle, another line was forming. After the cashier finished with her current customer...she took the next customer in line on the other side of the aisle. We walked and stood in line on the other side. The cashier then told us the line started on the side we were originally standing. In the meantime, another customer came in with a return and she helped her instead of assisting us next. My husband has a hard time finding shoes that fit. Initially, we came in to look for shoes for me. If we hadn't found a pair that fit him...we would have left without making the purchase. It is unlike me to hand my five stars to a chain like Big 5. In the interest of being real, five stars are more than warranted here. Big 5 Beverly Hills, Big 5 Panorama City, and others have served my lifetime love for outdoor sports. Camping, hiking, bicycle touring and more. Zero-degree sleeping bags, a six person tent, butane for my camping stove, bike racks, my diving watch, sports equipment, athletic apparel and more. Despite the good service, products and prices in receipt of me by other locations, only this location of Big 5 deserves so much of my personal gratitude. Why? Have you ever needed shoes before? Maybe we have all needed a new pair of shoes in our lifetimes, but have you ever needed them without the means to supply them? I have. I wore out my only pair of shoes once when I was a little girl. I was so sad! That was then. This is now. Now, I have over 100 pairs of shoes. ****confetti*** I justify this obscene extravagance by imagining the former me on my very worst day. The five-year-old me who wore out her one and only pair of shoes to nothingness on the way to school. Sad eyes, see my closet. Man, I would have had a dress-up party to end all others! Giggled, cried with happiness and passed out having SO much fun. "Holy smokes!" I would have exclaimed. Silly then, silly now. Not much has changed. Shoes have a special place in my heart. Almost free. I am more partial to a pair of slutastic hooker heels myself, but I almost died hiking in high heels to see the dawn. Hiking boots it is. In anticipation of camping/hiking the Angeles National forest, one of the people dearest to me needed hiking boots. So here we were. But I didn't expect to be so doted on. No Gucci outing has granted me the kind of personal attention we were given on this day at Big 5. Josh? Asked if we needed help before we could ask for it. Our helpful associate disappeared into the back with arms full of hiking shoes and returned with advice and a kind smile in our direction. He tried SO hard to find the best shoes for the best deal. He never complained when we asked for three sizes of the same shoes. He just delivered. Moved, I asked if I could speak to the management. (The cashier looked worried.) I assume that most people only ask to speak to the management in order to air their complaints. As a yelper, I realize that this could have gone in another direction entirely. I launched into the VERY short version of the story I tell you now. How an incredibly thoughtful and dutiful employee went beyond the norm to help us like no one has ever been helped before. I then accepted a business card and wrote a letter to Big 5 corporate. For the attention of any parties interested in the profit margin of Big Five Inc., Dear sirs, All of your retail outlets could take a lesson in customer service from your phenomenally-run Pasadena branch. Big 5, the shoe store that sells guns! 20 years ago, my uncle was the manager of this store, and at that time, there were several big competitors nearby for clothing, outdoor gear, and fishing/hunting equipment: Sears, FedCo, KMart... You laugh now, seeing what they have become, but the point is that Big 5 had to stay competitive with quality items and good prices. Sears has been emasculated with a giant proverbial pair of pinking shears, KMart has been overrun by idiocy, and FedCo is now a Target selling dust ruffles, Drain-O, and Lego Movie merchandise. Somehow, Big 5 survived in the 'Dena when just about everyone else in the neighborhood bailed out. But it hasn't been without cost to the consumer. Sure, you can find a good deal on Reebok's or those God-awful Krocs, here (warning: if you wear size 13 like me, they don't have your size... You know what they say about guys with big feet? They say, "Um, sorry, 11 and a half is all we got..."), and if you want to pay a little more than WalMart prices for a box of 30-06 ammo, they probably have it. But good luck finding ANYTHING you actually need for fishing here. It's incredible to me how poorly stocked this store is on fishing equipment. Seriously, a coastal Rite Aid has a better fishing department. I wouldn't complain, and just accept that this has become a shoe and work out apparel store, except they are one of the only places you can purchase a fishing license locally. I admit-- I always scan their ad in the mail for a deal on an EZ up canopy or a big ice chest... We even bought boogie boards here at the beginning of summer. But it saddens me just a bit to see that this chain, which used to be synonymous with angling, now has an afterthought aisle somewhere in the back with a bunch of garbage gear you'd never buy if you knew anything about fishing. read more

It's always fun planning a vacation. It's equally fun picking up some last minute items... in this case, water shoes for Waikiki Beach. I came in here to pick up a pair and was immediately greeted by one of the cashiers (a blonde girl at the customer service counter) ... and that was the extent of their friendliness. First, the water shoes are not located near, say.... the shoes, which are towards the back of the store. Instead, they are by the entrance near the sandals. Aren't they all footwear? The many employees that were walking around all appeared busy and made no eye contact. Luckily, the store isn't huge and it was easy to fine what I came here for. But walking around different departments, I'm met with the same look on every employees' face of boredom, regret in life and the lack of energy for working here. I asked a few employees questions about some products, but they all seemed lethargic in trying to respond. That was enough for me. I left with my water shoes. I'm not sure if a manager was present but it's "Retail 101" that once a customer is in your store, you try to cross sell additional items. I was in there voluntarily asking about additional products, but they lacked the energy to help me, so I only purchased what I needed. Big 5 may still be an ideal place to shop for sporting goods because of their selection, but perhaps do your research before coming in because I can't vouch that everyone will get attentive service. read more

The past couple of times that I've come to this particular Big 5 Sporting Goods, I've been pretty frustrated trying to get someone to help me locate an item. By the time that happens, I'm pretty frustrated waiting in a long line because there is only one cashier. If/when a second cashier opens while there's a long line, they don't give priority to those who have already waited in line... random inpatient customers pretend to not realize there's a huge line on the other side and end up cutting in front of the people who have been waiting for 5-15 minutes before them. I'm not saying that I won't come back here ever again because it happens to be in a pretty good location... it's not going to be my go to store for anything sports related if I can avoid it. read more

This location is much neater than other Big 5's I've been too, perhaps due to the recent re-organization. The staff is very friendly and goes out of their way to be helpful. One associate with hands full of empty boxes, saw me enter the store and immediately asked if I needed help locating anything and would be happy to show me where anything was. :) On my most recent visit, I was looking for some handwarps for boxing and the employee walked me to the proper aisle and even pointed out which mouth guards were the best to absorb shock. The level of helpfulness was at maximum and never pushy, Big 5, has been there for me over the years. It has been my main place to go for athletic shoes and more. I am partial to the brands Asics and Saucony and Big 5 carries them cheaper than what I would find online and in other sport oriented store. I have bought items from athletic clothing, fitness accessories like jump rope to a skateboard (an irresponsible gift to my teenage cousin and she loved it!). I am happy with the quality of items, of course they aren't the best-money-can-buy but they aren't TehSUCK either. I don't want to spend loads of money on a sport that I'm not going to dedicate my life to, yeah not going to be in the Olympics anytime soon. I just need items that do the job and reasonably priced, so thanks Big 5 for fitting the bill. :D read more

Well the best part of Big 5 is their rifle selection. Where else are you going to get some great deals on firearms. They are knowledgeable and able to take you through the whole process. This store is smaller than some (it is an independent corner building) and stuffed to the gun wales accordingly. The staff has always been courteous and professional with me. Some of their selection is low end and a bunch is mid grade. I think that is just the way it is with Big 5. They also have outstanding knife sales and a great selection of knives. I have bought thousands of dollars of product from them over the years. I truly love all that they have to offer. The GM at this location is also willing to talk firearms or knives at length with you and is able to have something transferred around at no charge. Great customer service and a great overall shop. I will say it is a heavy traffic store and thus a bit dirty but what do you expect when massive numbers of patrons? Great place and I know I will be back numerous times. read more

The Big 5 by my house was out of the ammo I was looking for and I needed this for a Christmas gift! So I called Big 5 in Pasadena (this location) and the guy was really knowledgeable and super nice! i ended up calling him literally at 9:27pm, which they close at 9:30pm and told him I'm 5 minutes away to see if they will still stay open for me. He said he can only stay open until the last customer leaves, and I made it RIGHT in time! I walk in, storm over to their gun selection, and got a few boxes of Blazer 9mm ammo. I asked if they had any quick loaders for 9mm mag's but they didnt. I have to admit that their staff is very knowledgeable about ammo, guns, etc. Though I dont think they have an amazing selection or anything, but I wouldn't hesitate to ask them for advise or anything regarding guns and ammo. I am soooo grateful that they stayed open for me and they even gave me advise on ammo cause I was going to buy Blazers only, but they advised me to try out Independent Ammo as well cause they were made by Blazer, but now they are made of Federal, which is a reputable company! This Big 5 Sporting Goods gave me awesome service and their pricing was pretty awesome too. I cant complain about anything. I wish I remembered the rep's name that assisted me, cause he totally deserves props for helping me out!! read more
