I would give this store zero stars. I went with a friend to this location on a Sunday looking for some hiking boots. They didn't have the hiking boots stocked on the shelves, so we sought out an employee for assistance. We saw a handful of employees around the shoe area, and asked them for help. Their reply was to give them a minute while they finished helping someone else. This happened thrice. The fourth gentleman we asked went into the backroom for the size that we needed, and didn't come back out. After about 25 minutes of waiting to even get the product we needed, we simply left. Would not recommend this location at all: parking sucks, and customer service is a joke. read more

We've stopped off at this Big 5 a couple times to purchase a daily Adventure Pass. Once, they were all sold another time they had them. I've never really looked around but if you're in the area and need an Adventure Pass I'd suggest trying this Big 5 location. read more

Came here to pick up a basketball and air pump. Came in around 6:50PM on a Sunday and even though they were clearly in the process of cleaning up, the workers were still enthusiastic to help me locate the things I wanted to buy. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes! Only downside was Amazon offers more competitive prices (could've saved around $5 - $7 if I ordered online). But I guess thats just the price you pay for being able to immediately have what you want. read more

Big 5 has been at this location for years - and what baffles me is HOW it's been there for so long. Doesn't seem like anyone ever shops there. Every single time I've been there the last 5 years, I was either the only potential customer in there, or 2 other people are randomly straggling around, only to ultimately leave empty-handed. THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW: 1. Parking here, heck even getting here can be annoying. Due to the road reconstruction effort done to the Colorado - Rosemead intersection, much of the area around this location is blocked off, so you have to make a few loops around the block before you figure out how to get to parking. Since the construction is always shifting - I'm not quite sure how to give you certain advice as to where/how to park. 2. Be ready to ask for help. Now while this statement seems to promote their customer service, it's actually a jab at how poorly organized this Big 5 is. It seems like an earthquake hits within the shop every few hours because everything seems to look in disarray. Although items are technically stacked up, everything looks messy and all over the place. I went to where I found a snorkeling set to look for swimming goggles. Upon not finding anything remotely close, I asked the attendant for help and he guides me to the opposite side of the store. Don't you think snorkeling gear and goggles would be around the same SIDE OF THE STORE?! 3. Expect uncompetitive prices. Unless you see specifically what is on their ad for a ridiculously low price, everything else is either at par or more expensive than the likes of Sports Chalet. Example: I went to Dick's Sporting Goods just north of here looking for a water-proof bag. Thinking that Dick's was already expensive, I came to Big 5 thinking I'd get a bargain. NOPE! The bag ended up being $3 more here than at Dick's - so I ended up not buying it at all (which would later be good since the purpose for the bag, a hike to the Bridge to Nowhere, would later be canceled) 4. Don't expect quality service. Here's that cliche - you ready? 'Just because you hate your job doesn't mean you have to make me hate it too'. The people that work here obviously don't like it, but why take it out on me? I just want to buy my stuff, perhaps get some information, then walk out with goods in hand. A pissed off you will likely result in a pissed off me - and that's just not pretty. VERDICT: Unless you want prices that aren't super special, experience walking through a bomb-testing facility, and put up with bad service, you're better off going to Sports Chalet or Dick's Sporting Goods. read more

The parking is not so great, they have compact parking spots so good luck if you come out and some guy with a big assed pickup truck is parked 2 inches from your door. Chalk it up to California real estate greed market where most neighbors can see into each other's bathrooms, one thing I'm still getting used to after moving to California. Nice store, went in to get shoes, got a good deal. People wanting New Balance shoes, they're cheaper here. Designed with people that have wide feet, very comfortable, but not cheap if you shop around average $80 to $120, found them for $50 on sale here. But my cheapness got to me so I purchased some unknown brand, I guess I'll end up finding out if it was worth it soon enough. A father and his son were purchasing a daily pass or a fishing license, not sure what but it took time, I wasn't in a hurry as it was hot as %#% outside. They could use a general "outdoor" guide there that would advise people on how to make the best of their weekend and perhaps provide the tickets or licenses they need. Monitors through the store showing cool activities might also drive sales a bit. I sometimes go to REI mostly for the quality clothes, etc, but they are mad expensive so Big 5 has the market and as such not a bad deal overall. read more

We went here today to get two pairs of rollerblades and two pairs of running shoes for our kids. In the midst of accumulating our stack of stuff, my wife needed to use the restroom since we had been there for a while having the kids try shoes on. She asked a salesman if she could use the restroom, and his reply was, "yeah, uh, well..no." **BONK** We went and spent our $300 somewhere else, and they even let my wife use the restroom when we got there! read more

If you're expecting a chain sporting goods store that goes on and on with aisles and aisles of merchandise, this Big 5 may come as a surprise, as it's definitely small by superstore standards. They do their best to get as much merchandise into the store as possible, so it is a little crowded in places. I was interested in the baseball/softball department, and it got a little tight back where they have the gloves. The reason I went in was for a new softball glove, and I left without having been able to find one I liked. I'd obviously have liked a bigger selection, but, to judge from the layout of the place, softball isn't this store's #1 priority. What I will compliment them on is their customer service. The guy who helped me was as nice as they come, knew his stuff, and admitted it when he realized he didn't have what I was looking for. Based on that, I'd definitely try this store again. Just not for a 14" right-handed softball glove that'll fit a big-handed man. read more

This Big 5 only gets 2 stars because they happened to have the shoes I wanted. Otherwise, they get a zero. The sales staff, encluding management, were more interested in stocking shelves then helping customers. The one guy I managed to get to find the mate to the one on display was clueless to where things were in the stockroom. He dropped off the shoe and left....I had to call over the manager, who would have rather shout from two isles over than walk over to where I was, to get the security tag taken off so I could wear the shoes out. the cashier gave me attitude when I needed her to stop working with merchandice andring up my purchase. Until I thought it was just the store in Van Nuys that was bad. Apparently it's the entire chain that sucks. Big 5 used to be the best sporting goods store in town. read more

My girlfriend is the best person ever! Just give me a moment to express that. She surprised me with a brand new Easton Relflex Bat! That definitely made my day :) Hands down the greatest gift. I played baseball for many years and love the game still. I try as much as I can to go to the batting cages as regularly as I can but Ialways have to use the old bats that are already worn out.. My girfriend told me that Larry was the employee that helped her out ..AND he is definately very knowledgeable about baseball and knew what exactly what bat to pick only based on the description she gave him of me. Definately Am giving him the employee of the year award for to his kindness, and generosity. When I'm shopping for running shoes, it's not about price. It's not about the glitz (though I do thoroughly enjoy bright orange kicks and the like). I need a good shoe that isn't too heavy (none of those airbag monstrosities), not light enough that I feel the pavement with every curl of my toes, and nothing that is wide healed, designed for extra support or insoles.... I saw an end of the year clearance sale at the Big 5 in the Santa Monica location and had to investigate. I wouldn't usually choose a big box chain for my running needs, but they had some great deals...unfortunately they did not have a great deal of stock! I typically wear either a size 10.5 or 11 depending on the manufacturer - an average foot size (no Shaq like requests for size 23's) and this location had nothing! So not wanting to miss out on the unbelievable deals, I stopped at the Pasadena location. And what do you know, success! I found a good pair of Asics for $45 plus tax. No, they aren't the Kayano's that cost a buck and quarter, but similar to the 2010's model at a fraction of the usual $70-$80 price range. Service here was a bit hectic and I felt bad for the guy working the floor in the shoe dept. Maybe they were understaffed or someone called out, but there were about 4 cashiers standing around waiting for something to do and 1 guy on the floor. He took about 30 minutes to get to my request while he assisted the customers waiting before me. For the price and the right pair, it's worth stopping in to see if they have any good deals before retiring the current running kicks. read more

Big 5 is usually where I'll go to get any hiking, fitness, sports, Halloween costume (this year it was an unslutty referee) accessories. I choose to come here because it's usually a good selection, and the prices are usually cheaper than other sporting goods stores, like Sports Chalet and REI. Yes, it's a bit disheveled. Yes, the employees seem as if they couldn't care less. But I will return here because their stuff is more within my price range ($/$$$$). read more

I got no complaints! The kids are into all kinds of activities, from basketball, to baseball, to swimming and whatever else I spend my weekends driving them around for. When I needed shorts for basketball, Big 5 had them. Baseball cleats for kids? Got it. Swim gear (whatdya mean you lost your goggles again??) they got it. Archery stuff, stocking stuffing RC cars, whatever: Big 5 has it, and its probably on sale. Staff seems to be spread thin but performed when I needed help, so no problem there. Between here and Play It Again Sports, I get what I need and walk away happy. Its a beautiful thing. read more

It's 8:55pm, 5mins before the store closes... I dropped by the swimming goggle section to check out the swimming caps. I was literally here an hour later to check out swimming goggles only finding the type I wanted was 10bucks cheaper on Amazon. I also googled up that Big5 does not do price match... So I was pretty much set that I was going to buy those goggles Amazon. Anyhow, I saw a lone man standing there working effortlessly organizing the countless unorganized goggles. I decided to throw in a quick question: Do you guys do price match? From the comments I read online I was expecting a cold NO. Instead the gentlemen said what's the price you're looking for? I informed him that the same thing is selling for 10 bucks cheaper on Amazon. He took the goggles all the way to the front desk and found out for me that the best he can do is 5. And apologized for the fact that Big 5, the company won't allow him to go any lower. Despite the fact he wasn't able to match the price I still took the offer mainly because I respected the fact that he went out of his way to get my business. read more

Crummy store. Staff is boir well informed on anything that they sell. Always out of stuff. They told me that I couldn't buy a 3 day fishing license that the minimum is 10 days and it's the same price as a year license which they said the year license ends in Aug. They are wrong, the year license ends at the fiscal year in Dec. and you can't buy a license for how ever many days as you want. Also their selection if guns suck and cheaply made . read more

In a pinch or a jam, this big 5 is alright just to satisfy what you may need. If it's customer service to go out of their way to help you, this place is where you will not find the help. Had two workers size me up with my kid as we were shopping obviously looking for shoes. One passes us up with out asking if we needed help and the other takes a few walk bus then asks and answers our question and leaves. I go and ask the other guy who seems too busy stacking boxes of shoes back to ask if we needed help. I ask for a size and he says this is all we have. No suggestion of have you tried this other style. I had to go to the front to ask probably someone who's got a little more authority in the packing order and still the guy is lacking in trying to offer assistance other than nope they don't have this at another store. I finally ask for a suggestion and he finally brings us to a few places and say have you considered women's shoe that's isn't so feminine in color?Great suggestion in offering a size in women's, it worked satisfied the need and we are off. Man almost like pulling teeth! No wondering the staff seems so unmotivated, because the people higher up on the food chain aren't either! If I didn't have to ask someone for help I wouldn't but certain things you can't help your self otherwise I would, I can't go to the back store room. Man that was rough. poorly manged...dumb employees, messy store. I went in for propane, waited in a line with 3 other customers. There were at least 6 people working, but no one helping the cashier. the cashier then gets on the pa syste, asks for a manager to come forward to approve an eployee purchase! A flirtly little girl buying an Adidas wristband got her 10% off employee discount, enraging te 3 customers in line. This employee discount transaction took 7 minutes, all the while the cashier & flitry girl played cutesy waiting for the manager. Needless to say, I went elsewhere for the propane. The only thing big about BIG 5 is how big they & their employees suck. read more

This place is like a second-hand thrift store. Everything is crammed, and after 5 minutes, you are guaranteed to develop claustrophobia. You have to pick your way through the clothes racks, which are arranged like obstacle courses. The shoe department is a joke - prices may be good, but try to find your size - especially if they are on sale! The salespeople sometimes try - but most act as if they have been sent to to this store on some sort of corporate detention. I'd rather shop at the Sports Chalet in the Santa Anita mall, even if I have to pay a bit more. Besides, the money I save at Big 5 will get spent on fixing door dings from their too-small parking lot. read more

This particular location is just lack luster. It is always messy with limited stock. No one is really around to help you. You see employees there, but they're usually walking as briskly as they can, without busting out into a full jog, to avoid helping customers. When I pulled out of one of their dimly lit parking spots, something, either a parking block or the cement from a planter, caught my bumper and made a really loud noise. I realized later that it had half ripped it off and will cost several hundred to fix. Usually you hear scraping when you first park but I heard nothing and so had no warning. You have a lot of equipment but your baseball bats, baseball gloves, and more are not the highest brands and sometimes don't work. Like the glove I have doesn't close right. Hope you can upgrade your equipment. Also the staff aren't very experienced in the merchandise. read more

This is where I bought my 1st rifle, a Ruger 10/22. They didn't really have a wide variety of rifles(no handguns, they said they don't sell handguns.). Price wasn't bad, pretty much the same with Turner's. I was assisted by Joshua a very nice and friendly guy. He was knowledgable and helped me out really well to decide which rifle to purchase. It was my first time purchasing a rifle and i just got my FSC. I was so excited to get my 1st gun and i was glad Josh was the guy i bought it from. He helped me all the way from my decision making on which rifle to purchase to receiving the gun. Even though it seemed it wasn't his department he helped me out anyways. He was very patient and knowledgable about each question i had (which i had a LOT! Due to the fact i knew nothing about guns and i just knew that i wanted to get into the sport.) This has always been a good place to buy camping and sports equipment for the kids but Kristy ( I think her name is) bumped Big 5 up to great with her customer service. I came to buy a lantern and some flashlights that were on sale but she gave me some insight and told me which ones were better. I initially thought it was an up-sale, but she gave me the discounted sale price for the flashlights that ended the day before so that I came out on top spending about the same amount with better products. My son and I stopped there a few days ago to look at some shoes that were on sale for a deep discount. My needed a very specific type of shoe. Josue was working in the department and immediately greeted us and asked what he could do to help. He showed us what we were looking for, brought us three sizes to try for our convenience, showed us where to sit, and checked back. He also informed us of the similar styles on sale. When we noticed another type of shoe on sale and asked about the quality, he gave a very frank analysis of the various brands and advised us according to our specific needs. We were in and out within fifteen minutes, got what we needed at a great price and avoided buying that wasn't right for us. We were checked out by Jasmine who was just as pleasant and helpful. We will absolutely return to Big 5 soon to look for the other types of shoes my son needs and to check out sporting equipment when we need it. I've passed this store for years without stopping in and wonder what took me so long. It's not huge, and that makes it easier to navigate quickly with the friendly staff's help. I noticed that they have a lot of running shoes, so that will be a type of shoe we visit to try on. They also have frequent sale flyers, so check it out. read more
