We were looking for vegetarian chinese fare and found it here on yelp so we gave this place a try. Eating a super early dinner at 5:30 with kids in tow led to wonderful attentive experience before any potential crowds. Service was fantastic and any questions we had were so politely addressed. The dishes came out fast, portions were generous and the flavors hit the notes we needed. Garlic pea shoots- don't be discouraged by the name. This is seasonal and a wonderful side to the rest of the food General Tso Tofu- very large serving, tofu has a slight crisp if you start eating immediately and a slight sweetness to the sauce. Would love to see a kung pao version with the peppers and peanuts! Veg fried rice- finally a place that does it right! Not just rice with a small pouring of frozen carrots and peas. This was great. Scallion Pancake- surprisingly not the standard version. This puffed up nicely and despite being deep fried was not greasy. Wonderful dipping sauce too! Homestyle Tofu- lots of mixed veg. This was not my favorite due to the "tobasco-esque" tanginess but a hit with my wife. There are some toys near the front to keep your kids (or you) busy while you wait but honestly the food comes out hot, fresh and fast- so you may as well just wait! We will be back!

The only Taiwanese spot in central NJ and the best Taiwanese spot. I love their oyster omelet, and their braised pork belly over rice

Update- February 21, 2022 Finally had the time to dine-in here. We ordered chicken with broccoli and Chinese eggplant with tofu on garlic sauce. Taste great and it has fresh ingredients.

Passing by from PA and seeing this being right off from an exit off of I287, I decided to give it a another try since it's been 5 years. I ordered a couple orders of Taiwan Meatballs and Pork Thick Soup to go. COVID restrictions were still in effect, so the entrance was blocked by a counter and clear plastic panes were hung above the counter to limit exposure between the staff and customer. I welcome and applaud these arrangements during the ongoing pandemic. The Taiwan Meatballs were piping hot which was great. The skins were perfectly tender but way too thick, leaving little room for the filling. The pork filling tasted okay but lacked the proverbial cinnamon seasoning. The red sauce was good but I needed like 50% more, especially given the thick skin. Overall it was okay and worth the try. The Pork Thick Soup, on the other hand, was a total failure. The soup was nothing more than a brown tasteless slurry, absent of any hint of the required bonito flavor. Pork strips were few and far between, and each piece was mostly batter with very little actual protein. A total ripoff for $7.50. We were shocked and outright insulted. I was too disgusted to even take a picture of it. Never again!

This place has such delicious and authentic Taiwanese food. It's been open for 10 years and is family owned. I can't believe I've just discovered it! We drove 50 mins from North Jersey to come here for dinner on Lunar New Year's eve and it was so worth the trip.

Great vegetarian dinner! Our family isn't vegetarian but decided to get a few tofu dishes. Veg dumplings had crunchy veggies but I prefer the skin to be thinner. The general tofu was crispy, sweet and savory served with steamed broccoli. We got a tofu with black bean sauce and requested it spicy. This was my favorite. The tofu and broccoli was simple but great flavor. We requested 2 of the dishes made with soft tofu and they accommodated. The place is casual with lots of art on the walls.

We got the General Tao's chicken, lo mein noodles with beef and ho fun noodles (similar to drunken noodles) with chicken. Delicious

Great food, great service and friendly. Everything we got was on point, flavorful and satisfying. Recommend and will be coming again over and over again.

Red Onion is a popular, well-known and authentic Taiwanese restaurant among NYC and NJ. We were recommended by lots of friends especially for their shaved ice bowl. Finally, we got a chance to visit the neighborhood and couldn't wait to try. The decor of Red Onion is humble so you might miss easily. We had their Fried Pork Chop, Five Flavor Intestine and String Bean. The food was overall delicious especially the fried pork chop. It was well-fried, flavorful and juicy inside with crunchy layer. We were there for their Shaved Ice with Red Bean & Condescend Milk and it's definitely worth our drive from queens. The red bean was braised creamy and the ice was shaved in delicate pieces. Red Onion is one of our favorite Taiwanese restaurants now in NYC & NJ. However, we live too far or we will visit more often.

I love Taiwanese food and let me tell you, Red Onion is definitely 100% authentic. It's not the best I've had but it's pretty much up there. I've only been here once for takeout and let me say the owner or worker or whoever he is, he was SO NICE. I want to give him 5 stars for being so nice and accommodating that i want to go here every week lol. Anyways, I had only ordered the chicken ho fun and the crispy fried intestine. I have no complaints about either, both were pretty solid. The Ho Fun noodles were kinda sticking together a bit too much but nothing drastic. And the intestine were super crispy. This place is a bit on the pricier side but I would say it's worth it since it's super authentic.

So was looking for a local favorite Taiwanese restaurant. Found red onion, seem like a good place to give it a try. Ordered all the Taiwanese favorites, 3 cup chicken, braised pork with rice, scallion pancake, stew with intestines and blood. I was expecting more from this place I though that the owner was Taiwanese I had high expectations. But I was disappointed. All the food came out missing flavor. It wasn't bland it was just not authentic Taiwanese flavor thst you expect. One of the most unique flavor should be Thai basil leaves. I didn't taste any one that. It just tasted like soy sauce chicken, the braised pork rice had no sauce and was dry. The scallion pancake was just doughy. Only reason I gave 3 stars instead of 2 was because the owner was very friendly and gave service. Other then that this place has work that needs to be done.

The service is very friendly and patient (and American friendly). The food comes out lightning fast. Everything is very reasonably priced. Best of all, it's all delicious. I tried stuff outside of my comfort zone and I loved it all. My favorite were the pork juicy buns (soup dumplings) but the most unique thing was the pan fried noodle which was like a crispy deep fried noodle that would soften as it sat in the sauce. The golden lava buns were sweet and rich and perfect for dessert.

We were second standing outdoors waiting in this big fat long line. Immediately upon opening for the day the line nearly forced entry near stampede and this cafe was immediately packed to full occupancy of patrons with free seating. The Yelp reviews are accurate and truthful. The food is great. This is a small cafe with only approximately eight tables. I do not recommend large parties of five and greater. It is no-frills, but not exactly "hole in the wall" type that lack in aesthetics for upscale lavish atmosphere but the deficiency is resolved in the food quality. There is one sole functioning restroom in the whole business, ergo, stand in line and wait. We entered hungry in a lugubrious sense of deep sorrow, but exited hunger pangs fulfilled. When exiting upon completion of our lunch meal, there was a line that quickly formed outdoors waiting. Unfortunately, access to this cafe in Edison, NJ is by car only and there is a free parking lot that is shared with neighboring businesses located in a small shopping complex. There are no business cards, and no takeout menus available. Customer service is efficient as the staff worked methodically hustling busy to take orders and fulfillment. Our male waiter was attentive to respond to our inquiries and make suggestions based on our desires. I was able to keep the sales receipt. Price is in the rationale realm of stagflation totaling $41.75. Nota Bene: No table hibernation as the table turnover is fast pace with a line overflowing outdoors which cannot interrupt the flow. My foodie synopsis: Pork steam soup dumplings, 6 pcs, siu2 lung4 baau1, 小籠包, $8.75 Very juicy, flavorful and great. It was served piping hot. This is my favorite default dish for every visit at any Shanghainese ethnic cuisine. However, there were no serving tongs provided for this particular appetizer which is industry standard. Preserved cabbage with pork noodle soup, syut3 coi3 juk6 si1 min6, 雪菜肉絲麵 $9.50 This is a satisfying Chinese comfort food. This noodle soup was abundant with noodles, pork and chopped vegetables. It provided warmth to my very broken heart. Shanghai chicken in wine sauce, zeoi3 gai1, 醉雞, $8.95 A traditional Chinese cold appetizer, aka Chinese Drunken chicken made with Chinese Shaoxing cooking wine. It has amazing flavor and texture to be deliciously enticing. Of course, the cooking wine brings flavor to this appetizer making you want more. Shanghai pan fried U-Don noodle, soeng6 hoi2 cou1 caau2 min6, 上海粗炒面, $11.95 Abundant noodles with good consistency and it not heavily filled with grease and oil.

If you're in NJ and craving Hong Kong-style wonton noodle soup, head to Wonton Guy in Edison. It's a no-frills local gem tucked away in a tiny strip mall off Route 27, with a few parking spots out front and more in the back. The space is small (only 10 tables!) and nothing fancy, but the value is hard to beat. It's always busy, and after you take your first slurp of the soup, you'll get why. Service is fast, so the tables turn over quickly. I was able to grab a seat when I walked in on a Saturday evening. The menu is simple and offers 3 main options: 1.) noodle soup with toppings 2.) soup with toppings (no noodles) 3.) lo mein with toppings served with soup on the side From there, you pick your noodle type (egg, flat rice, vermicelli), as well as up to 3 toppings (wontons, dumplings, beef brisket, etc.). There are also a few side dishes like shredded pork in chili tomato sauce, deep fried fish skin, and curry fish balls. They even sell some items raw like wontons, noodles, dumplings, and sliced beef. And the best part is... the prices are very affordable! Most of the dishes are around $11-$16. My order: *Two Toppings (wonton + beef brisket) Noodle Soup [$12.75] - Where do I begin? Every single part of this meal SLAPPED. The wontons were MUMBO JUMBO and generously filled with fresh, plump shrimp that were sweet and juicy. The noodles were soft and springy. The beef brisket was SO tender with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. And the broth? Super rich, aromatic, and savory. It's made of shrimp skin, pork bone, dried flounder fish, dried shrimp, and dried monk fruit, but it doesn't taste fishy at all. Each table is stocked with condiments like vinegar, homemade chili oil, and soy sauce to customize your soup. The chili oil packs some SERIOUS HEAT, so watch out. This was hands down one of the best noodle soups I've had. I was sad when I finished it :-( *Hong Kong-style Milk Tea [$6] - I really enjoyed this! The black tea was bold and strong--almost too strong for me, but the milk balanced it out nicely. I only wish it had boba! Everything tasted authentic. Quick backstory: The owner comes from a family with GENERATIONS of experience making wontons and running noodle shops in Hong Kong. He grew up there and brought those family traditions to his own restaurants in Toronto... and now Edison. All those years of experience clearly show in his food. The broth is simmered overnight, and the wontons are freshly prepared every morning. No shortcuts here--just decades of tradition, skill, and a whole lot of love in every bowl. Ugh, I wish I lived closer because I'd be a regular. It's hard these days to find a place that REALLLLLLY delivers a memorable meal that's both tasty, reasonably priced, and served in generous portions. If you're within driving distance and debating whether it's worth the trip--DON'T! Wonton Guy is absolutely worth a visit, even if it's just once. I drove an hour to try it, and I still think about those wontons all the time... no joke LOL.
