The first thing I noticed when I entered the restaurant was that it was filled with Chinese people. So you know that this restaurant has great flavors to offer. And I was not disappointed. Their menu is very friendly towards non-Chinese people because they have a lot of pictures of their food. I tried the Taiwanese meatball, Salt and pepper spare ribs, and three cups chicken hot pot. Taiwanese meatball- it's like a big dumpling but the outer part is more jelly like. Their sauce on top is very sweet but it goes well with the pork meat inside. Salt and pepper spare ribs- It was very crisp, juicy, and moist. I would definitely recommend this dish. It has green peppers and fried onions on top and seasoned with salt and pepper. The dish was fried and cooked fresh so it was very good. Three cups chicken hot pot- I would recommend this dish too. The (dark meat) chicken was very tender and flavorful. It took a while longer than the other dishes but it was worth the wait. The flavors are great and a great hot pot dish. Servers seemed like amateurs but they were friendly and polite. This place is amazing! The husband and I came here after our original dinner plans fell through. I'm so glad we ate here! I had called and due to poor cell service I hung up-the restaurant called me back a minute later to answer my question! The restaurant is nice, quiet, and well maintained! The food is hands down amazing! My husband ordered the hunan chicken and I ordered the home style tofu. The hunan chicken was fresh and the chicken was soft and well cooked. The home style tofu is hands down the best version I have ever had! The fried tofu isn't the deep fried chewy packaged tofu, it was freshly fried. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! Also, the tea is brewed to perfection. It's not over brewed and icky tasting. It's smooth and light in taste. I will definitely coming back!! read more

Damn, for those who think Red Onion is "expensive", have you ever tried to 1) find Taiwanese food outside of Middlesex County and 2) ordered any kind of Chinese food outside of the Central Jersey area? Y'all are sure spoiled in Edison. Went with a Taiwanese friend to Red Onion based on Yelp reviews and was not disappointed. True, it does not compare to food in Taiwan, but then, I have not heard of one single restaurant in Jersey that meets such a high standard. We really enjoyed our time at Red Onion. Cheap, closely authentic Taiwanese food. Just sad that they were out of jellyfish when we were there. But it definitely satisfied our craving for some basic Taiwanese dishes. Service was spotty when we were there - we had difficulty (being a small table of 2) getting the servers' attention - but it was polite. Until I hear of some outstanding Taiwanese joint that meets the expectations of all in the Taiwanese-American community, Red Onion deserves a least a visit to try it out. read more

Very authentic Chinese cuisine. We are lucky to live in an area with so many ethnic influences because we get places like this were you can not recognize the entire menu and always get something new. I have been here quite a few times and was recommended by my Chinese friends who knows how to spot authentic Chinese. Today was my most interesting dish. It was pig intestine, firm tofu, some green peppers, and squid. Very good flavor and the intestine was surprisingly very tasty. The waiter barely spoke English, which makes it all the more fun. Very nice place for an authentic Taiwanese meal. Might not be the best TW food around but I think I would certainly be up to visit more often if given the chance. We came here as a group of 4 on a late Saturday afternoon around 3ish. The place was pretty much empty due to the time. Most of their dishes were good if not decent. These were what we got. -Taiwanese Duck - Probably the best dish out of everything, very flavorful and juicy. Just the aroma itself was enough to make people hungry. -Minced Pork Rice- Rice was bit of dry, the pork was good but I think would been better if they cook it longer to absorb more of the sauce in the meat. -Oyster Omelettes- Very good choice, oysters were fresh and the omelette was delicious. I also like that they were generous with the amount of veggies in the bottom. -Beef Noodle Soup - I only had a few taste of the broth and slice of beef but it was good. -Deep Fried Pork Chops - Again the rice was dry but the pork chop was excellent. Portion size was generous as well -Gua Bao - Traditional TW bun with a slice of pork belly, I thought the pork could have used more fat and cooked less but overall it was good choice as well. This is a Taiwanese owned restaurant. Despite being a good chef herself, the owner hired a professional chef for the restaurant. The food is Hakka style. If you go when they are not busy, the chef may make special dishes for you. All the dishes can be made with low salt/oil. So if you found the dishes too salty or oily, just remember to ask for the modification next time. We tried the duck, which was nicely done. The beef noodle soup was okay too. The noodles are not anything to write home about, the beef was slightly tough; other than those things it was not too spicy. We also tried the chicken roll, which was nicely fried. The celery with calamari dish that we ordered was just okay. I don't think the calamari was in season. The Hakka stir fry was nicely done. Although we asked for low salt so it lasted a little blend. Overall, I would say the food does not compare to the Bay Area or in Taiwan. But then given the area, this is probably the best that one can find. The service is fast and friendly. I would recommend this place for anyone who wants to try Taiwanese food. Some of the other items on the menu includes Taiwanese-styled braised pork burger and oyster pancake. read more

Was drawn to Red Onion by its positive reviews (one of the highest for Chinese restaurants in the area), but came away slightly disappointed. We had the oyster omelette, a classic Taiwanese cuisine. It was my first time trying it outside Asia, and I was super excited, however this version had too much potato starch powder over the eggs. As such the texture is different and it fills you up super fast before you get to try other dishes they have on offer. It's not something I'm used to, but it comes with a generous serving of oysters with sweet-spicy tangy sauce and laden with a bed of green vegetables. We also had the Taiwan beef noodles and the soup dumplings (xiao long bao). The noodles were alright while the soup dumplings stick at the bottom even though we ate it right after they were served. Hence be careful not to break the skin prematurely and spilling the precious tasty broth. I think part of the reason behind the positive ratings is due to their newly renovated interior. While it makes it more pleasant overall for me the quality of the food presides especially since there are so many other Chinese/Taiwanese/Asian eateries around the area. My verdict is that this is an ok place but probably not one of my regular go-tos. read more

Taiwanese places are one of the hardest to find cuisine in the East Coast and it's becoming a rare specimen. So I heard about Red Onion which was recommended to me by by a Taiwanese who frequents there. I lived in Taiwan for about 3 months for summer vacation so I have eaten authentic Taiwanese food. This place is pretty decent for the most part. The oyster omelet, is pretty close to authentic. I had a Beef noodle soup and it wasn't very good, it was certainly edible but just wasn't as good as Happy Noodle place nearby. Some of the rice dishes are enjoyeable but just not as authentic. I would say this place is good for home cooking just don't expect it to live up to standards in Taiwan. The place does pack up so expect a wait during busy times. One of my favorite Taiwanese bian dong dish, the pork belly and seasoning over rice was just ok not up to par. It should be one of the easiest dish to master since I've had food stands in Taiwan that makes exceptional pork belly chop over rice for about $5 and I just can't find anyone or anywhere that can make it authentic here. read more

Taiwanese Chicken - this has bones though typically this kind of appetizer is called a popcorn chicken and does not come with bones. It could be a little less salty but who can resist super crispy and salty fried chicken? Ah-Choy - Seasonal pricing was $9.95. I wish it cost less to eat deliciously healthy. This was my favorite of the day. So yummy and garlic stir fried. Braised pork over rice - I got this last time and this time and both times I wasn't pleased. I expected the meat to be softer since its "braised". It's tough in comparison to other restaurants I've had it at. It's only $5 so I think I trick myself into getting it each time. What is a pro is that it comes with a soy sauce/tea egg. Those are so so good. If a few minor things could be corrected above I would easily change my rating to a 4 star experience. BUT I took a star off because the service is terrible. Note: The owner is great and very kind, but the other waiters are completely unprofessional. They are way too comfortable. There were 3 high school looking waiters. - One was sitting with his friends at a booth and serving people - One picked his butt - The other came out of the kitchen with a large burp. I think we waited long enough for them to get through the new restaurant kinks. Finally went there for Sat night dinner. It was packed around 7pm. A good sign, I like full restaurants. Their menu is pretty extensive. It was the three of us and we ordered like it was the five of us. Service is friendly, most of the wait staffs speak both mandarin and English and their menu is in both as well. They don't have a separate Chinese only menu. Oyster pancake - warning, it is an acquired taste mainly due to the texture. I missed a good quality oyster pancake and they delivered. The sweet sauce complement the dish really well. Crispy Taiwanese fried chicken nuggets - not the healthiest option but both the texture and taste is on point. Three cup chicken (under the hot pot section) - it was good... Think they should marinate the chicken a bit more. String beans - crispy and salty. Great with rice. Pork belly over pork rice - I think I'll order tmjust the rice next time. Not to impressed by the belly. Need longer cooking time. Taiwanese beef noodle soup - I was super full by the time we got this. The noodles are quite thick. We ate in Red Onion restaurant several times in the past, had good experiences. But this time, I don't know what happened the restaurant, including the waitress, kitchen, the restaurant owner, all not as the impression we had before. One of the dish has a bow of rice come with it. We asked the waitress if we can switch it with brown rice (from white rice), she said "sure". It turns out the brown rice smell like kitchen sink. We did not bother to ask for another bow since we figured it might be the same even if another bow. At check out, the bill shows up additional $1 for the brown rice (we asked for exchange from white rice at the beginning or the meal ordering). We told the restaurant owner, here is what his respond 1. brown rice smell like kitchen sink -- he just simply said "oh, I'll tell the kitchen". Not even care enough to smell it or taste it. Guess he knew what's wrong the brown rice. 2. additional $1 for the brown rice -- he was just saying "recently we changed policy to add $1 for exchange from white rice to brown rice". If so, why the waitress did not tell us this new policy when we ask for the exchange? The waitress was simply said "sure". That certainly meant it was a direct switch and nothing else (such as $$) involved. 3. When we complain the situations to the restaurant owner, in the conversation, we can strongly felt he just no interest to make customer feel better. Instead, while handling this, he continue to chat with his friend at the cashier front desk. Any business starts falling down certainly is starting from some points. read more

Food was a hit or miss. Customer service was awful. I am giving my fair judgements as someone who grew up in Taiwan. We ordered Taiwanese meatball(肉圓) which was a hit, beef stew noodle soup （牛肉麵) was good , and Rou Geng Mi Fen (肉羹米粉）was a total miss. The Rou Geng Mi Fen was just a whole bowl of rice noodle with 3 slices of pork and very little soup. I couldn't bear finishing it ( Yes! It was that bad). For the whole time, the owner noticed it but decided to ignore it until we were about to pay. He apologised by saying "We are sorry that it seemed the Chef put too much noodle in it. And the dish doesn't seem like our standard. Can we add some more soup for you to go?" I refused to add more soup bc the soup was as plain as water and there is no point to bring a whole bowl of noodle back home. The owner later said, " Then next time when you are back here we will remember to add more soup to your order." It seems like the owner couldn't comprehend the point that the dish was not edible and he ruined someone's dinner by offering awful food, but still expecting the customer to go back and order the same dish. I politely replied, "If you wanna make up my horrible dinner, I would happily take one Taiwanese meatball home." But they refused to offer a free meatball and answered that "The dish has always been cooked this way (implying no one complained). And the Chef is confused since a previous customer complained about too little noodles and maybe that was why he put more noodles this time." The whole non-sense shows that : First, they blamed their customers for the food. Second, they don't care if you have a good meal there but only their profit. This hidden little gem provides a very authentic taste of Taiwan. The must haves are Oyster Omelette, sweet and sour fish, Taiwanese meatball, and the Taiwanese fried chicken. The service here on the weekends for dinner may be a bit slow but it's well worth the wait. In all, this is my new go to spot for a little flavor of Taiwan when I'm in town. 10/10 read more

This is my regular place for Taiwanese food. The food is authentic and the owner is super friendly. They have a variety of Taiwanese 'snack food' which helps when I feel homesick. Red Onion was a dinner stop on a way home from a day trip in Philly, and my expectations were exceeded. I'm super picky about my Taiwanese food because after traveling to Taiwan many summers as a kid, I've grown accustomed to the fact that most restaurants in the US just can't get Taiwanese food down right. I don't know why -- perhaps the cuisine is more challenging to learn than I think, or perhaps we're just not getting the right ingredients. No matter the reason, I came in with a very critical eye and was very pleased. Here are the recommendations: Oyster Pancake: Impressive. For those who are looking for a very traditional dish, this is it. They got the balance of eggy/pancakey/glutinous potato starch right. And they actually had the correct variety of oysters, and a fair amount of them at that. Taiwanese meatball: Another very traditional Taiwanese dish. Envision a meatball cooked in a glutenous rice and covered with a savory/sweet sauce. Although the sauce they use isn't what I'm used to (I feel like it's the same one they use for the Oyster Pancake), the consistency of the rice and the meatball are spot on. Give this one a go. Mushrooms with tofu casserole: This came out sizzling hot and was damn good. Other things we tried: Hakka-style stir fry: This is a soy based stir fry with intestines, pork, and tofu. Very flavorful, but you gotta love intestines (I'm not a huge fan, so I munched on the tofu and pork pieces). I was pleased to see this Hakka dish on the menu because Hakka cuisine (a subset of a Chinese population that settled in early Taiwan) is even rarer than Taiwanese cuisine to find in the states. Salt pepper squid: Our least favorite dish. The batter is super thick and wasn't seasoned very well. Overall, a surprise find. I was wavering between 3 or 4 stars. Gave it a 4 because the ambience is nicer than some of the other Chinese restaurants and the menu was varied with a lot of different options. We were happy to find another "ethnic" Chinese restaurant. We wanted to try everything! Food was hit or miss. Some dishes were really good and others not so much. 1) We ordered the westlake beef soup. This was disappointing. Got this for my youngest daughter who loves westlake beef soup but she didn't care for this one at all. It was too salty and there was barely any cilantro in there. There was no cilantro taste at all. It almost tasted like water enhanced with msg and a bit of scrambled egg whites thrown in. 2) Loved the scallion pancakes! We ended up placing a second order after we finished the first. (Would have been perfect if it was less greasy). What I loved was the soft thin layers inside the crispy exterior. 3) Spicy beef noodle soup. This was good. The beef was tender and the soup was flavorful. It was slightly too sweet for my taste though. This is a one-person dish. 4) 5 spice tofu wth pork and celery. Not sure of the actual name of the dish. This was yummy. The 5 spIce flavor was prominent in the dish and enhanced it well. The meat and celery and tofu all complemented each other well. 5) homestyle tofu - this again had great flavors. We weren't expecting it to be spicy though. 6) fried porkchop- ordered this based on other yelp reviews. We didn't like this. It was a deep fried pork cutlet with too much breading. 7) water spinach- not good. Mostly large thick cut-up stems. Probably not the season for this? I don't like their chicken wing pork fried rice option , the only give 4 little pieces of chicken broken up , the chicken and the wing part was separated so instead of getting 4 peices of chicken if you put together what the actually gave you you end up with just two... Lets see food wise...service was great but food was eh. * Pepper/Salt Fried chicken: had bits of bone which is fine but had no taste whatsoever. Meat was not marinated and I had to add my own pepper and salt.
