No frills - tasty food The restaurant is located in a small strip mall. You order on a kiosk screen, whether you eat in or take out. The food is better than usually available in the area.

Heard good things about this place but have to say it missed the mark for me. It's transformed into a canteen style takeout place with ordering kiosks and plastic ware. I ordered the salty tofu soup and cold peanut noodles. The cold noodles were too soy sauce heavy but ok otherwise and the tofu soup was a little oily but would've been better with a side of rice. My friend ordered the soup dumplings and said she preferred the ones from the north brunswick location. It was very dead for a Saturday night which wasn't a great sign. Service was good and accommodating but I likely won't be back again

Back here again with friends last Monday and had a great time. We ordered the Shanghai special crispy noodles, spicy udon, vegetable buns, and the soup dumplings. I'm allergic to nuts and sesame and it was super easy to communicating and receiving clarity on what I could and couldn't eat! The service is excellent, there is always a short wait so be prepared, but it's completely worth it! My favorite was the spicy udon! While it's a hole in the wall spot, it's a must visit - don't sleep on this spot!

Heyyyyyyy you guyyyyyyys! This little hole in the wall is hands down a 10 out of 10. You order at the kiosk including your beverage of choice. The pork soup dumplings are delicious, the wontons with spicy pb sauce delicious, the cucumber salad delicious, crab and pork soup dumplings delicious, the scallion beef pancakes were ok wasn't prepared for the warm outside with a semi cold filling but overall this entire order amongst our group was amazing, fresh, delicious. Let's eat!

TLDR: okay, but no longer the best spot in south jersey. Came here before COVID and during COVID and always had an amazing time. Their food was always top notch and was made the 45 minute drive worth it. However, coming back for the first time since the change made me regret the drive. This place is now fully self serve. You order the food on a tablet (regardless of dine in or take out) and the food gets brought to you. Soup dumplings: skins are thicker and flavor is not there. Very disappointing. Beef scallion pancakes: flakey but lacked flavor and not as crispy as it used to be. Spicy pork wontons: there is no peanut butter flavor or any spiciness to this at all. The sauce actually looked watered down. This was always my most anticipated dish coming to this location, not anymore. Stir fried udon noodles: very oily and not as flavorful Hate to say this but I would not recommend coming here anymore. If you are absolutely craving soup dumplings, and are willing to drive, go to Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings in Palisades Park.

This was so good too. A different experience than the other dumpling I ordered. Again. Excellent in taste and texture.

The dumplings that I chose were delicious. I ordered to go and chose two different types. Recommended by one of the employees. I'm glad I listened. I'll be back when I'm in the mood for dumplings to try other ones.

Tasty food at reasonable prices, especially when you factor in there's no tip! We were afraid of a wait, but when we arrived around 1230 on a weekend there were actually 2 free tables. The guy working there instructed us to place orders at the terminal, and mentioned its all "self serve and so there's no tip". That definitely works for me. Food came out fairly quick. Portions were bigger than I expected given the price. Favorites were the spicy shanghai pork noodles (which actually weren't that spicy, but were quite flavorful, especially with the egg); and the beef appetizer dish, which had an ample amount of cilantro. I wasn't the biggest fan of the beef noodle soup (was a little flavorless compared to other places). Dumplings were okay, but not sure that I would order them again.

Pork juicy buns, Shanghai pan fried pork buns, Shanghai sticky rice shumai, plum juice, noodles with snow crab & clams sauce are good. Did not like the golden lava bun. Spacious, clean, easy parking in strip mall, attentive wait staff.

My go to soup dumpling place in Edison. Ugly Dumplings are flashier, but this place is more authentic and delicious. There are a few machines at the front entrance where you can place the order, then find a table and wait for them to call your number. The whole system is super easy and efficient. My personal favorites are the beef scallion pancakes, the spicy salty tofu bowl and the soup dumplings. Avoid the jelly fish, it was just meh. Overall, this is the place to go if you are craving some Shanghainese comfort food, it's an easy no frills place, perfect for a cold winter night.

I first started going here during covid when they were take out only. I sat there once and the vibes were completely different. Touch screen to order then you sit. Can be packed and takeout has never seized to fail me My friend from Beijing said this has been the best spot she found in the states and is better than 90% of the spots she has gone to back home. Also said the custard buns are the best she's ever had I have been told that the storefront in New Brunswick isn't as good as the OG

This has been my family's go to restaurant for soup dumplings since before the ownership change. They have a great selection of dumplings and dimsum, but we usually get the same 2 things: crab meat/pork soup dumplings and pan fried pork buns. We LOVE the crab and pork soup dumplings, but in the last half year, it seems like the recipe for the dumpling wrapper has changed. They're a little thicker and gummier than they used to be, but they're still better than everything else in the area. The filling is spot on as always! The pan fried pork buns are my personal favorite (perfectly crisp, juicy, flavorful, what's not to love?). This time we tried the crystal pork slice, which had a strange texture. None of us really enjoyed it, but it's probably an acquired taste.

Came here for dinner on a Friday night. It was not too busy. This was the first time I came here since they renovated. They don't really have a wait staff so you have to order from a touchscreen tablet. We ordered the pork juicy buns, the pan fried pork buns, pork and vegetable wontons in spicy sauce, and wu's favorite topping over crispy noodles. We also ordered the sweet fermented rice and tofu for dessert but they accidentally gave us the rice balls in wine sauce so we got an extra free dessert! Everything was good but if I'm being honest I thought the food was better before the renovations. The juicy pork buns were decent but the skin kept ripping. The pan fried pork buns were crisp and the meat inside was flavorful and tasty. The pork wontons in spicy sauce were always one of my favorite items. This time it was good but I feel like the portion size shrank and it was a little less flavorful than it used to be. Lastly the crispy noodles topped with their favorite topping was extremely disappointing. The crispy noodles did not taste fresh and the sauce didn't have much flavor. For the desserts...both were very solid. The sweet fermented rice with tofu had just the right amount of sweetness and the fermented rice added a nice sourness that made it different and addicting. The sweet rice balls in wine sauce Aldi had the right amount of sweetness. The rice balls were perfectly tender and also had bits of fermented rice in the sauce. Overall I enjoyed the food but was expecting it to be as good as it was before. I would've gave it 3 stars but the server working that night was very friendly and made up for giving us the wrong dessert.

Ordered through GrubHub and was pleasantly surprised that everything came steaming hot. Pork Juicy buns were OK, the texture of the filling was not the best, but decent. It lacked flavor and so did the broth. The dipping sauce fell short as well. Rates 7/10. The steamed sticky rice siu mai was kinda weird. I've had this before from other restaurants, and this one had some extra non-standard ingredients, but good. Rates 7/10. The beef, scallion, pancake wrap was surprisingly very good. I don't like cilantro, and they loaded it up. But it wasn't overpowering. The beef was not dry. Kind of had a sweet taste to it, which I didn't mind the pancake itself. Very very good light flaky not greasy good texture. If it wasn't for the cilantro, we would have a perfect 10 but I rate it 9/10. And if you like spicy as much as I do, you have got to get the side order of their house made chili oil. They charge $1 for a decent size container, so worth it. Rates 10/10. Overall, I rate it an 8 out of 10 . I've been to other dumpling houses in Brooklyn that are better. Perhaps the indoor dining experience here would have fared better.

Do they fry in peanut oil? Is it safe for allergies?

Im not sure. Most restaurants move away from that because of allergies. Vegetable or soy or a blend is used alot. None of these are good for health. I usually just get the steamed juicy buns here

    Have they opened for dine-in?

As of today, April 10, 2022, the restaurant remains in the take out/delivery service only format that started at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Trust me and just pick up the food and eat it in your vehicle if you don't live close by because… Read more

Does anyone know what type of meat is in the Shanghai pan fried udon?

I believe it is beef but it probably would be customizable to your personal preference.

Are they take out and delivery only, not sit in?

    Correct

How does their takeout work during these COVID times? For example, if I order/pay online, do they leave my order on a table for contactless pickup as some Asian stores are doing?

In my experience, you would go up to the counter to get your order after ordering and paying online to avoid confusion as all their orders are takeout or delivery.

Does anyone know if they are currently open? Google says they are open but I can never get through by phone and when trying to order online it says they are not open.

I remember seeing notes on their door stating that they were closed. I am not sure if that is still the case as this was a few weeks ago

Do they serve dim sum every day or just weekend/?

Their "dim sum" is available every day. Actually I'm not even sure why they label those dishes as dim sum cause they're not the typical Cantonese dim sum dishes.

Is this place worth the money?

ABSOLUTELY! Please try this place. Don't look for a great service or ambience. Just go eat their dumplings!

We were second standing outdoors waiting in this big fat long line. Immediately upon opening for the day the line nearly forced entry near stampede and this cafe was immediately packed to full occupancy of patrons with free seating. The Yelp reviews are accurate and truthful. The food is great. This is a small cafe with only approximately eight tables. I do not recommend large parties of five and greater. It is no-frills, but not exactly "hole in the wall" type that lack in aesthetics for upscale lavish atmosphere but the deficiency is resolved in the food quality. There is one sole functioning restroom in the whole business, ergo, stand in line and wait. We entered hungry in a lugubrious sense of deep sorrow, but exited hunger pangs fulfilled. When exiting upon completion of our lunch meal, there was a line that quickly formed outdoors waiting. Unfortunately, access to this cafe in Edison, NJ is by car only and there is a free parking lot that is shared with neighboring businesses located in a small shopping complex. There are no business cards, and no takeout menus available. Customer service is efficient as the staff worked methodically hustling busy to take orders and fulfillment. Our male waiter was attentive to respond to our inquiries and make suggestions based on our desires. I was able to keep the sales receipt. Price is in the rationale realm of stagflation totaling $41.75. Nota Bene: No table hibernation as the table turnover is fast pace with a line overflowing outdoors which cannot interrupt the flow. My foodie synopsis: Pork steam soup dumplings, 6 pcs, siu2 lung4 baau1, 小籠包, $8.75 Very juicy, flavorful and great. It was served piping hot. This is my favorite default dish for every visit at any Shanghainese ethnic cuisine. However, there were no serving tongs provided for this particular appetizer which is industry standard. Preserved cabbage with pork noodle soup, syut3 coi3 juk6 si1 min6, 雪菜肉絲麵 $9.50 This is a satisfying Chinese comfort food. This noodle soup was abundant with noodles, pork and chopped vegetables. It provided warmth to my very broken heart. Shanghai chicken in wine sauce, zeoi3 gai1, 醉雞, $8.95 A traditional Chinese cold appetizer, aka Chinese Drunken chicken made with Chinese Shaoxing cooking wine. It has amazing flavor and texture to be deliciously enticing. Of course, the cooking wine brings flavor to this appetizer making you want more. Shanghai pan fried U-Don noodle, soeng6 hoi2 cou1 caau2 min6, 上海粗炒面, $11.95 Abundant noodles with good consistency and it not heavily filled with grease and oil.

Soup dumplings- the good thing is here they give you 8 pieces (vs 6 pieces in other NJ places). The skin is too thin. It was difficult to pick up with a chopstick or spoon and not 1 piece stayed intact while picking it up. All of the soup leaked out before it even reached my plate. The texture of the skin was "slippery" vs the bouncy kind I usually see with soup dumplings. My husband said he bit into a small piece of bone which is weird. Sweet soy milk- it wasn't a smooth drink. There were lots of soy grits Savory soy milk- tasted very watered down. Didn't have much soy milk flavor Pan fried dumplings- the portion was generous with 6 huge pan fried dumplings. These are the largest I've seen anywhere. They look more like buns than dumplings!! It was ok but overall it didn't taste like a pan fried dumpling. The owners seem really nice and friendly, chatting with some of the customers. Their service was good too. Fried Pork Chop, Crispy Fried Intestine, Fish Fillets in Chili Sauce from the mains, and Orange Beef from the lunch list. I started with Hot &Sour Soup, which was flavorful and loaded with tofu, sprouts, pork slivers and potent vinegar. Loved it! The Pork Chop was deboned and pressed thin. The result was a crisp sliced Katsu-like cutlet with nice flavor and long crunchy chew. The Intestine was also crisp and filled with green beans that mixed well with the hardened shell and soft innards. Not my fave, but my lovely partner ate it enthusiastically. The Fish and Chili was very good, with tender lightly breaded white fish fillets and red chili sauce that included small pieces of celery, sprouts and cabbage, in a large bowl. Finally, the lunch sized Orange Beef was delicious with sweet and spicy amber sauce coating the pieces of lightly crisped beef. Ubiquitous broccoli sprigs added color to the dish. My typical go-tos are: [Apps] soup dumplings, shiu mai, spicy wontons, vegetable spring roll, shrimp and vegetable pot stick, shrimp dumplings; [Soups] fish rice noodle, spicy fish rice noodle, spicy seafood, Shanghai wonton, shrimp and pork wonton, beef (I forget what it's called - it's the #1 ordered one there); [Mains] beef chow fun, fish fillets with scallions, salt and pepper pork chop, salt and pepper fish, fish fillets in wine sauce, young chow fried rice, and the standard chicken and broccoli. All delish! I think I've been going there long enough as to where they probably know it's me when I call in an order. Highly recommend for authentic Chinese food.

The system worked beautifully at first. Their website promised pickup in 20 minutes. I left the The Heldrich Hotel and made the ten minute walk, only to find my order already being bagged. Efficiency like that gives a person hope. Hope, as it turns out, is fragile. Back in the room, I opened the containers immediately. Spicy beef noodles with hand pulled noodles in a beef and pork broth, along with steamed pork soup dumplings that had been spoken of with reverence online. The dumplings were cold. Not warm, not cooling. Cold, like they had been waiting longer than I had. They had fused together into a single tragic mass. When I tried to separate them, the dough tore open and the soup filling spilled out into the container, abandoning its purpose. How this happened during a ten minute walk is a mystery. The more likely answer is that it did not. The noodles were at least hot. The flavor was fine. Not offensive, not memorable, just present. You eat it, and it disappears from your mind almost immediately. This is a place people seem to love, which makes the experience feel like a clerical error in the matrix. Perhaps it was an off night. Perhaps I caught them at the exact wrong moment, but on this particular evening, dinner felt less like a meal and more like a misunderstanding.
