I'm not sure if they upped their game since my first review in like 2017 (yes, I'm bored on a weekday and have decided to update and leave reviews on Yelp lol), but Shanghai Bun is the bomb (me and my old school lingo). My typical go-tos are: [Apps] soup dumplings, shiu mai, spicy wontons, vegetable spring roll, shrimp and vegetable pot stick, shrimp dumplings; [Soups] fish rice noodle, spicy fish rice noodle, spicy seafood, Shanghai wonton, shrimp and pork wonton, beef (I forget what it's called - it's the #1 ordered one there); [Mains] beef chow fun, fish fillets with scallions, salt and pepper pork chop, salt and pepper fish, fish fillets in wine sauce, young chow fried rice, and the standard chicken and broccoli. We really wanted to enjoy this place as we were told by many as having excellent food. I am reluctant to state my observation and opinions. However, I was so shocked that I think it's necessary. We found this place very dirty and run down as we entered. However, we sat down and tried to dismiss our initial impression. But while we were sitting, we saw numerous roaches near our feet and then by our table. That was it - we left. I'm not naive - I know vermin and roaches are part of the headaches of running an eatery. However, seeing the cockroaches so prevalent near the dining area made us really concerned about the state of their kitchen. Again, the aim of this review is not to harm this business which I am sure cooks tasty food. This is mainly a takeout place. There are a few tables to dine in. The server gave us a menu and pen to circle what we wanted. She came back over to see if we were ready and we told her to give us some more time. She stood there until we decided. She did not offer us any water or ask if we wanted to order drinks. What Chinese spot doesn't give out glasses of water. We went to the car to grab our own bottles of water. The food was ok. Came here for dinner tonight with my Chinese girlfriend . The place is very small with 4 small tables , 2 booths and one large table. Very good soup dumplings with a medium amount of broth and chewy skin. The beef noodle soup broth was weak however. It tasted like just soy sauce. Located in Matawan mall. The mall and parking lot had seen better days for sure. Shanghai bun offers up traditional Shanghainese and Cantonese dishes. Unfortunately, most of the dishes we had were all pretty one-dimensional in taste. The flavors were flat and had one common denominator, Salt! They like using salt alot! Salt dominated most of the dishes which in turn provided no contrast or complement the other ingredients. There was little to no variation in taste, making each bite predictable and unexciting. We had the following: * Sweet and sour soup - too salty and not sour enough. * Singapore mai fun - Not enough curry powder, under salted but balanced well with enough moisture content in the mai fun. * Scallion pancake - Not traditional as the pancakes were thick and doughy and lacked any scallions. * soup buns - Skins a little on the thick side. The filling and soup was bland. Lots of soup though, but bland. * shredded pork - Salty, salty, salty. Enough said. * Salted cod fried rice - Too salty and cod had an odd flavor to it. * Beef noodle soup - This was the best dish. Beef was tender, the noodles were perfect and soup was balanced well Overall, the place needs a more nuanced and balanced approach to seasoning as this would had significantly improve the flavors of the dishes. There is a self-service hot water and tea station. There is no service staff to wait at your table and take orders. Order at the counter. Have a seat and they will bring you your food. I love this place! I've been here for years. It has one of my favorite Soup dumplings. If you're a fan of peanuts, order the noodles in peanut sauce. Otherwise, the beef noodle soup is a classic. Service is fast, but this is a place you order, hand in the menu, pour the tea, and pay yourself. Ambiance is casual and seating is very limited. Ordered the pork soup dumplings and shrimp dumplings to go. I was there 10 minutes before the estimated time it would be ready- I was really looking forward to them! The food was waiting for me, I got home in 5 mins. The soup dumplings were all burst and soggy bottomed. The pork was bland. The shrimp dumplings had this weird rice flour coating- very gummy. The good and the not so good. The food here varies from excellent to meh. I have ordered same dish and the prep, and taste varies. I wish they would not try to change flavors when a non Chinese person is ordering. Soup dumplings are always excellent, however some of the spicier dishes can range from bland to properly seasoned. Pace of service can vary from too fast to " remind server that they forgot some dishes. Upon occasion some of the servers have a bit of problems with language. This restaurant is located inside a lot with plenty of parking space available. We were able to grab a table and was given a menu and pen. To order, we circled each dish we wanted and handed it over to the waitress. Yea was self served as they had a machine in the back for hot tea. There isn't a lot of authentic Chinese restaurants in the area so this restaurant is decent for the area it is in compared to the food in NYC. I really liked the sa cha udon noodles. On a recommendation from someone on Instagram, I was going for some more Chinese food and dumplings. The beef noodle soup was quite flavorful. Sometimes the broth can be quite plain, and while not very seasoned, it had a lot of complexity. The soup buns were pretty good. I've had a run of some "ok" soup buns lately so this was on the upswing to a better version. Could have used a little better flavor in the broth. The spicy wontons were also good.
