    Beef Chow Fun

This is mainly a takeout place. There are a few tables to dine in. The server gave us a menu and pen to circle what we wanted. She came back over to see if we were ready and we told her to give us some more time. She stood there until we decided. She did not offer us any water or ask if we wanted to order drinks. What Chinese spot doesn't give out glasses of water. We went to the car to grab our own bottles of water. The food was ok. We had the pork soup dumplings, beef chow fun and general Tso's chicken.

Came here for dinner tonight with my Chinese girlfriend . The place is very small with 4 small tables , 2 booths and one large table. We order several appetizers and some different diners to check the dishes out. The food came out in a timely fashion and was delicious. I'd highly recommend this place for authentic Chinese food per my Girlfriend

Located in Matawan mall. The mall and parking lot had seen better days for sure. Shanghai bun offers up traditional Shanghainese and Cantonese dishes. Unfortunately, most of the dishes we had were all pretty one-dimensional in taste. The flavors were flat and had one common denominator, Salt! They like using salt alot! Salt dominated most of the dishes which in turn provided no contrast or complement the other ingredients. There was little to no variation in taste, making each bite predictable and unexciting. We had the following: * Sweet and sour soup - too salty and not sour enough. * Singapore mai fun - Not enough curry powder, under salted but balanced well with enough moisture content in the mai fun. * Scallion pancake - Not traditional as the pancakes were thick and doughy and lacked any scallions. * soup buns - Skins a little on the thick side. The filling and soup was bland. Lots of soup though, but bland. * shredded pork - Salty, salty, salty. Enough said. * Salted cod fried rice - Too salty and cod had an odd flavor to it. * Beef noodle soup - This was the best dish. Beef was tender, the noodles were perfect and soup was balanced well Overall, the place needs a more nuanced and balanced approach to seasoning as this would had significantly improve the flavors of the dishes. There is a self-service hot water and tea station. There is no service staff to wait at your table and take orders. Order at the counter. Have a seat and they will bring you your food. Pay at the counter when finished eating. Don't expect too much, but there is room for improvement. The owners and staff are super friendly!

When you walk in the place you see people mainly order takeout from here, though they have seating inside. The lighting was a bit dark, but maybe they focus on their takeout customers more. Staffs are friendly but shy; we didn't know we could help ourselves with tea at the fountain until we received check. Recommended dishes: 1. Braise Chicken (三杯雞) *however the steamed broccoli around the chicken were bitter...or they meant for decor(?) 2. Shredded Pork & Szechuan Radish Noodle Soup (榨菜肉絲麵) 3. Spicy Pepper Fish Fillets (泡椒魚片) *dish was actually not spicy at all, though still pretty flavorful Dishes I may not order next time: 1. Beef Noodle Soup (紅燒牛肉麵) *the soup wasn't much of the flavor of the beef. Although I would try a different version next time : Spicy Beef Noodle Soup (川味牛肉麵) 2. Sweet & Sour Pork Chop (糖醋排骨) *pork chops were no problem, the issue was the sauce over them. The flavor of the sauce was unfamiliar and too much too soupy. Although I would try a different version next time : Salt & Pepper Pork Chop (椒鹽排骨)

Mostly Asian clientele which is generally a good sign.  D1 - Steamed Pork Soup Dumplings $9.25. Came with 8 dumplings. Not the best looking ones but skin is thin and springing and the broth is tasty. 4/5 N13 - Shanghai Wonton Soup $8.95. Also came with 8. Wontons are as big as it used to be but this is still the signature dish imo. 5/5 S18 - Hot & Pepper Beef $14.95.  Came with one bowl of rice. Very spicy, satisfying and addicting. 5/5 Chicken with Garlic Sauce $12.95. This is typical American Chinese dish but chicken was bland. 3/5 Manager doubled up as the waitress and wasn't exactly friendly but did her duties. Cash only.

I love this place! I've been here for years. It has one of my favorite Soup dumplings. If you're a fan of peanuts, order the noodles in peanut sauce. Otherwise, the beef noodle soup is a classic. Service is fast, but this is a place you order, hand in the menu, pour the tea, and pay yourself. Ambiance is casual and seating is very limited. It is less fancy or trendy but the food definitely makes up for it.

Love this little hole in the wall. I came on a Friday and it filled up pretty fast. The menu has a lot of great options including the typical you'd find at any Chinese restaurant. We tried the soup buns which were very yummy. I enjoyed the beef with garlic sauce. Will definitely come back

Chicken and Corn soup: Warm, and it hits the middle point of clean and hearty. I was scared that it was gonna be tasteless, but I got enough chicken and corn to not feel that way. Pork Chop: This is another Chinese restaurant staple. 85% of the chinese porkchops that you eat will taste the same. This one is no different. Tofu with Salted Fish: It was fine. The tofu did a good job defusing the saltiness of the fish, and the dish was generally well balanced. Objectively, this is probably one of their better dishes. I just feel that it didn't have the pop that I was looking for. Hot prawn salad with broccoli: The broccoli was just boiled. Nothing to talk about. The pawn was fried and bathed in mayonnaise.
