Chicken and Corn soup: Warm, and it hits the middle point of clean and hearty. I was scared that it was gonna be tasteless, but I got enough chicken and corn to not feel that way. Pork Chop: This is another Chinese restaurant staple. 85% of the chinese porkchops that you eat will taste the same. This one is no different. Tofu with Salted Fish: It was fine. The tofu did a good job defusing the saltiness of the fish, and the dish was generally well balanced. Objectively, this is probably one of their better dishes. I just feel that it didn't have the pop that I was looking for. Hot prawn salad with broccoli: The broccoli was just boiled. Nothing to talk about. The pawn was fried and bathed in mayonnaise. What's not to like? Yang Chow Fried Rice: A Chinese restaurant staple. 90% of the Yang Chow Fried Rice that you will eat will taste the same. This one stayed with the majority. Service; It was fine. The place wasn't busy, so getting what we needed wasn't hard. Ambiance: This place was built to support multiple small to medium families, and maybe one to two tables that can support 8-10 people. We came here with some friends for a quick dinner and were immediately seated after arriving. It's been a while since we came here for dinner and Hubs wanted to try them. We've been here for lunch, in the past. We ordered the following: Dumplings- skin was thick and meaty. Daughter thought it was generic but it was good. Cha siu bao - friends wanted this and they liked it. Pork belly and preserved mustard green in casserole - Our friends liked it. Hubs liked it a lot, also. He said that this was savory and it reminded him of his meals growing up. I liked it and thought that the pork belly was nice and soft. Singapore chow Mai fun - daughter liked it a lot and thought it was good. She said that it tasted great with the sweet and sour pork. LOL. Sweet and sour pork - Daughter loved this and wanted this again. Hubs thought that this was delicious. The breading was light and the sauce was sweet but not overly. It was nice and crispy. Beef brisket with curry - Hubs always wanted to try this because Canadian bloggers order this all the time. He felt that the brisket needed to be cooked an extra 10 minutes for it to be softer. But, he said that he wouldn't order it again. Beef is usually not his cup of tea, though. Roast chicken with garlic (half) - Hubs thought this was overdone. He was looking forward to this and was disappointed. It's flavorful and the skin was nice and crispy but the meat was overdone. Dry bean curd with goat casserole - Hubs loved this and said that it was awesome, flavorful and soft. He understood why this was the most expensive item of the night. He loved every bit of this. The gaminess turned off the rest of the table but he took the rest of it home. LOL The place packed up as the night went on. We were glad that we got there before there was a wait. We go here at least two weekends a month. The dim sum on carts is always hot, the food is fresh, and if you order from the menu, it's fast also. I highly recommend this place. Before that, we would go into Chinatown because we just couldn't find a restaurant near us that compared. read more

This is now my favorite dim sum spot. Even though the restaurant is small holy moly they have a ton of varieties to choose from and it was all piping hot and fresh. The Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice had a generous filling of minced pork, mushrooms, Chinese Sausage and surprise, surprise...a piece of salted egg. I haven't seen that since I was a kid. I was also excited to see Mai Lai Gao which is my sister's favorite growing up. It is a fluffy sponge cake made with brown sugar, very yummy. The fried taro puffs were a light golden brown. The shrimp in the Har Gow is incredibly juicy. Love that they still use rolling carts. They didn't ask what tea we wanted but we enjoyed the one they served. I believe it is Oolong. Lots of locals so come early. Sure beats spending $28 for two Nathan's hot dog, fries and soda. read more

West Lake Plum House is nestled on a corner of a somewhat uninspiring strip mall. When you enter West Lake Plum House you are greeted with tables and a rugs that seem dated along with fish tanks in the back. The food is the highlight and I enjoyed the dumplings. The portions are enough to share and I could not finish the ribs. The ribs were cut into almost bite size pieces with the bone still intact. The sauce on the ribs was almost like a sweet and sour. 7/3/25 we ordered Peking duck. It was served with pancake, sliced scallion, sauce and the Peking duck. The duck came in a platter on crispy rice noodle sliced already! And we were charged $70!!! No other trimmings came with it not even cucumbers plus the duck meat was too little! I was expecting it will be sliced in-front of us specially the restaurant was not busy at all. We ( just 2 of us) were the only customer. I honestly think it's overpriced specially this restaurant is not even Zagat rated!!! The taste is good but it's too expensive. In a smaller strip mall off Rt. 34 is where you find West Lake Plum House. This is a nicely decorated restaurant that has a welcoming feel and wonderful and attentive service. If you're looking for dishes that are American Style Chinese and Authentic Style Chinese cuisine at moderate pricing then this is a must try. All of the food was fresh and piping hot! Portions are average but prepared very well and with fresh meats and vegetables. I highly recommend the Pork and Shrimp dishes. And if soup is what you want, our table loves them all! This is definitely a solid place for that weekend Dim Sum! This place is consistently busy on the weekends so many sure you are ready to handle a wait here. Upon sitting down though, they are pretty good in coming by with a lot of initial carts of Dim Sum for you to pick from and ejoy! A bunch of their dumplings are my faves which you cannot go wrong with, in addition to the rice rolls (shrimp and beef!). They also of course have a bunch of menu items that you can order and wait for. This is definitely a great place to bring a group and catch up over a table full of delicious food! This place is getting 5 stars becasue of the way they prepeare their roasted duck; it's de-bonned and cut up neatly for serving made easy. That's a major plus in my family since my kids are only 4 and 6 years old. The serivce was also very genuine and kind, with nice and welcoming interactions. Our server served each bowl of soup into smaller bowls before stepping away. The tables are big, with plenty of space to feel comfortable, even while having multiple dishes served (which is a HUGE plus for family style.) The inerior is paying homage to the classic Chinese design stlye based off the wall art, the warm cherry wood features, and the soft music playing lightly in the background. I recall a fish tank as well. We ordered egg drop soup, roasted duck, the house noodles, shrimp dumplings, and hot tea. All was made fresh, excellent quality of ingredients and big portions. Westlake Plum House has been our go-to place for dim sum on the weekends. On our table, we had sticky rice in lotus leaf, beancurd rolls, turnip cake, chive & pork dumplings, steamed roast pork buns, beef rice roll and tofu pudding. Temperature wise, the majority of the dim sum was luke warm. This has become a common complaint for the last several dim sum visits. The dim sum was tasty but I had the feeling that it wasn't "just made". I have a feeling this relationship is ending....at least for the dim sum at Westlake Plum. read more

Wow. I've finally found a place to crown my personal favorite Chinese restaurant in New Jersey. West Lake is legit. My friends have dined here and told me that it's really good. I like to compare so I asked how it fares vs another Cantonese restaurant, Precious Island in Staten Island, which to me is as good as Flushing and Brooklyn. They told me its on par. Still, I was skeptical. I'd been burned too many times by bad NJ Chinese food. One dim sum session here went well. But hey dim sum can be deceiving. Some restaurants hire a weekend chef for dim sum and outsource some of the cooking. I still wasn't convinced. We came back for a birthday dinner for the high end stuff and it turned out that too was super delicious. They have ample parking in the back and it's byob. Two big plusses. The inside is typical Cantonese banquet restaurant. Not particularly nice but not rundown. It was very loud here and busy the two times I went. For our dinner we ate the Peking duck which was really delicious. Crispy and juicy and came with 10 small pieces of rice buns. The weekday special of $38 for this dish is pretty good but we came on a weekend night and paid $45. Twin lobsters were also $45. It was cooked ginger scallion style which is typical Cantonese. It was a little overpriced in my opinion but it tasted good and fresh. I've had lobster at another NJ Chinese restaurant that tasted bad even though it was straight from the fish tank probably because it was sitting in a filthy tank for too long. Wasn't the case at West Lake. They move volume and their food is very fresh. Their chef is also excellent. Every dish we had was delicious. I was stuffing my face with the water spinach with fermented soy bean - it was awesome to eat together with rice. Peking style pork chop was delicious too. A razor clams with thinly sliced peppers in a clay pot dish was also pretty good. Clams tasted fresh. No sand or fishyness. Just the right amount of seasoning to allow taste of the clams and crispy fresh peppers. The downside of the night was the service. The waiters were swamped and understaffed. We sat for 15+ minutes without a waiter when we were first seated. I approached the manager at the front asking if we had a waiter and he decided to play the part for us. He did a good and efficient job of getting our food out to us and he would make honest recommendations such as if he thought we had ordered too much. They didn't change our lobster shell filled plates or refill our waters until we asked. read more

This was my first time trying dim-sun outside of the city and I was really impressed! I would recommend making reservations, especially on a weekend around noon because we got the last available table when we came but once you are seated service is immaculate! They have large carts of steamed/fried plated of dim sum that come around the the table very frequently. You definitely don't have to worry about waiting a half an hour just to get an extra set of silverware or refill on your beverages as might be commonly found in more upscale restaurants. Onto food, everything that we tried was delicious and full of authentic Chinese flavors! My favorite thing was the plate of small steamed bun filled with sweet Chinese sausage! They were so soft and the sweetness was a nice pairing with the flavors of the sausage. Another good thing to try are the scallion pork dumplings! And side note, the complimentary hot chili oil and tea served when you sit down are a must to pair with your meal! And lastly, prices were great! We were able to get about 15 small plates for only $75!! Not to mention this is a very nice place! My wife and I are returning customers and we know that the food at West Lake is great. We even took my mother-in-law (who is visiting from Canada) there. But when we went for Dim Sum yesterday, December 22nd, something happened that made us very unhappy. A cart lady had given us a dim sum item that we did not order, and my wife mentioned this to my mother-in-law who was there with us. Another cart lady overheard the conversation between my wife and my mother-in-law, and snapped at my wife three times: "You did order it, otherwise we would not have given it to you!" My wife said: "It's alright, we will eat it." It could have been settled right there, but that cart lady returned in anger and yelled in a hostile tone: "Here, I will take the dish back and I won't charge you for it!" And on top of that, she yelled at my wife: "You are pointing fingers at me!" It felt like the cart lady got a sense of excitement by yelling. - My wife responded immediately: "I was pointing at my mother, not at you." - The cart lady said nothing and walked away. This is unacceptable. It was never my wife's intention to get into a fight, since it was just a misunderstanding about the dish we did not order. There was no need for the cart lady to go that far and accuse my wife of finger-pointing. The situation was very embarrassing, as the cart lady was scolding very loudly and the tables nearby could hear everything. We will not come back to West Lake anytime soon! read more

The food is cooked like the chefs in NYC Chinatown. They have dimsum, lunch specials to special set dinner menus for any occasions. They have fresh seafood. Ask and they will tell you what they have that just came in fresh. Peking Duck is a must try. The service there is good. read more

The wait staff is wonderful, and was able to suggest delicious dishes. I tried a dish that was at least new to me, which in English translation means long life noodles. Super authentic Chinese food. As soon as you walk in, you know are going to get some legitimate food. If you are looking for Americanized Chinese food, this is probably not the place to go. The dim sum days are the best time to come if you are looking for variety. They come around with the cart and you can try all sorts of different dim sum.
