Instead of 2 eggs rolls, it came with one but was still delicious. Pick up was seamless inside the store other than finding parking on the Main Street. Couldn't get a feel for the ambiance in that time but there were some people dining in and many takeout orders. Service was quick and my order was ready to go as soon as I walked in the door. Our first time ordering from Number One. I was thoroughly impressed and so very happy with the order. The food was outstanding! They followed a few instructions we added and with that, their service was on point. We were careful to order and rate basic selections. Perfecto. Next time we get a little menu creative. Ordered the chicken with broccoli, a classic and delicious, hit the spot immediately. Usually I have to order the broccoli well done because it comes too hard, and I forgot to mention it in the delivery, but happy to report, there was no need because it was perfectly cooked, and a good balance between sift and a little crunchy. We ordered the lunch specials: Beef and broccoli with Pork fried rice, and Boneless ribs with pork fried rice. Both dishes came with either Soda, Soup or Eggroll, we opted for soda, (I tried a spiced coke which tastes like candy your Grandmother would have) Not bad, an interesting flavor of coke. As for the dishes, they were flavorful, fresh, and hit the spot. Those salt sensitive would be happy, the dishes were not heavily salted. The portions were fair, and the food came prepared quickly. Unfortunately Number One is not number 1, more like number 8. I got fooled. The menu suggested plain lobster sauce had meat. So I ordered shrimp with lobster sauce. There was minuscule pork and watered down sauce. I was so looking forward to hitting the jackpot of good old fashioned thick garlicky, lobster sauce with pieces of ground pork. Another failure on my part. The fried pork dumplings were on the small side, but the too sweet sauce ruined it for me. Also too much Chinese 5 spice. Every dish I've gotten has been delicious... chicken and broccoli, yang chow fried rice, fried chicken wings, hot and sour soup, all of the udon noodle dishes... they add an extra flavor profile than most Chinese places, I can't place what it is but it really takes the dishes up a level. They also add a lot of meat to their hot and sour soup, which is awesome and not cheap! Food is ready quickly, whether pick up or delivery (I've done both). This is my new Chinese go-to spot, def better than J&P (which I used to love). I just wish they did more traditional dishes like wonton soup (Chinatown style). read more

This place has good food. The price is on par with area restaurants. Service is fast. The restaurant is clean and the people are friendly. The only drawback is there is no parking behind the restaurant only on the street parking. Municipal parking is available across the street. Tonight was my first time ordering from Number One Chinese in Matawan. I live in Hazlet and the food arrived quickly and the driver was polite and asked if he could leave it on my porch, which I prefer due to Covid-19 health concerns, I have to say, I am highly impressed by the service and quality of the food. Everything was very tasty and fresh!!! I ordered shrimp toast, chicken wings, chicken egg foo young, and Kung Pao chicken. The chicken egg foo young is my all-time favorite, I've had it from many restaurants, but honestly tonight was the best I've ever had!! Definitely more of a cheap takeout joint. Absolutely zero atmosphere 3 tables kinda dirty, but $5.25 for lunch special including soup, tea or soda is a super value. Unfortunately the hot & sour soup lacked flavor and was more sour then hot but had lots of the usual ingredients. The shrimp with lobster sauce had plenty of semi medium shrimp, overly watery lobster sauce. The pork fried rice with tons of pork & carrots had decent flavor but missed the mark due to the dryness. I mean come on, a Chinese place should be able to get rice right? The tea is bag Boo. Good food! Found them on a whim after being fed up with my usual place giving me bad food and bad attitudes and I found the opposite with these guys. Incredibly friendly staff. The woman who works here specifically remembered us after one visit and always asks how we are even when we're just ordering over the phone.
