My sister suggested Red on Main to kick off our weekend trip to Madison. We arrived between lunch and dinner, at 3:30 and weren't sure they were serving despite being able to physically get in. The hostess told us they served appetizers, drinks and half salads between lunch and dinner and the staff would have their team meeting to discuss the menu, but it wasn't an issue. I was super hungry, having skipped lunch to drive so we agreed to stay with reassurance that it wouldn't be weird for us to be there. It was only us. It wasn't. The staff at Red made us feel so welcome and were incredibly nice. Our server was amazing-she took care of us, tended/prepped the bar and went to the staff meeting. She was attentive answered questions or got answers (we overheard her ask at the staff meeting!), and was friendly as can be. I was initially disappointed with only appetizers and half salads until our food arrived. I got the house, my sister got the caesar. If these are half size the full is a trough! My greens were fresh, the vinegarette dressing coated the leaves just right and the croutons homemade. We did order the goat chesse free charcuterie and cheese board, which was fairly basic but what we wanted; it had fresh mozarella, a carmelized onion cheese and sage cheddar with a salami, mortadella (I think) and prosciutto. I wish it had more accouterments, it had one tiny pickle and a spattering of dried fruit. We also shared the cajun BBQ shrimp, a seasoned scampi with bread rounds. My sister commented it wasn't what she thought it would be but it was exactly as described on the menu. Poached in butter with spices. Despite that, I caught her dipping some of the charcuterie plate items in the shrimp dish. Each of us also had a refreshing summer drink, a black raspberry daiquiri for me a mango concoction for her to kick off our sister's weekend. Red on Main is one of the more upscale places in Madison but we found the prices reasonable for the food quality. I paid $45 for a medium ribeye that was served rare/medium rare, and after sending back it came back quickly, but was still under at medium rare. Sides were good, but were not replaced with fresh when my dish came back, which should be a standard best practice, especially when your bill is $200 for 4 to dine. read more

This has to be the Friday night spot! This place was poppin' (within covid regulations I did notice too). When we walked in a was glad we were able to be seated without a potential wait. Service was pretty good, could use a little better time management as we ordered drinks and appetizers and our appetizer came out before the drinks. I am a garlic fanatic. When a recipe calls for 3 cloves, I usually am using the entire head of garlic. I'm one of those and I know there are more of you with me! With that, I had to try the roasted garlic & toasts. It was an entire head of garlic roasted and served so we could scoop it out and put on toasts! Yum! Recommend a thousands times! They also had a special on pork rinds. They came out popping and crispy. I'm not a huge pork rinds person but they intrigued me. It was a nice appetizer addition. I ordered the black & blue salad. It comes with thin sliced seasoned beef on a salad covered in blue cheese. Being from buffalo I am all about blue cheese- the more stanky the better. Be warned this blue is stanky. If you're not a huge fan- opt for another dish! Jambalaya pasta was also a hit! Chicken & andouille sausage give that creole flavor over fettuccine. Service was a but slow, which could be due to most all the tables being full but I have to assume they would be more crowded in a pre or post covid world so that's not an excuse. All around a nice place to stop in for a bit fancier dinner than burgers at the pub. read more

Wife and I stopped in on weekday evening. My wife had the salmon and I the filet mignon. Served with the filet were crispy Brussel sprouts which were so delicious and oven roasted potatoes which were over cooked. The filet came out med rare just how I ordered it and was very tender and juicy. My wife's salmon was tender and very flavorful her oven roasted potatoes were also over cooked. But all said this place is Wonderfull but bring a fat wallet cause it ain't cheap. Paid $85 plus's tip. Worth it in my opinion. read more

Had dinner here with my sister in law for the first time . The place is very casual and is right on Main Street in Madison. We were not very hungry so decided to spit an order of the pork medallions. When they brought it to the table it was all on one plate and we had to divide it up our selves but we were charged an extra four dollars because it was a split order. I had never heard of being charged extra for a split order and when I asked our waiter what the four dollars was for since they didn't do anything extra. He couldn't answer it . He didn't know . Almost didn't dine here from lack of reviews, but VERY GLAD we did as the dining experience was excellent! Nice atmosphere (we set in the back by the bar area, soft music, proper table service), very friendly and well-trained staff (from the hostess to our server, Zaynah), well-crafted drinks (I had a Manhattan, my date had the Mule - both perfectly hitting the spot on a hot Saturday night), and our food was perfectly prepared. I had the Jumbalaya, and after Zaynah described the dish, I asked if the Chef could add some "heat" to it. Perfection! My date had the seared tuna steak with a wasabi glaze, and steamed veggies & rice. Not being anywhere near the coast, I had my doubts about her dish, but the tuna was perfectly seared, medium rare, good flavor, and the veggies were not over-cooked. Again, another excellent dish! Only opportunity for improvement... We liked sitting in the back bar area, but the wooden barstool seating got a little uncomfortable by dinner's end, and we had to ask for bread (not sure if it was just forgotten or if it's just not automatic here). That said, considering how new this restaurant is, and especially after the recent statewide shut down had them out of commission, our experience at Red on Main was a pleasant surprise. Y'all - I raved about the BUTTER!! Perfect, simply and well balanced seasoning in not only the butter (if Salt Fat Acid Heat had a butter baby - this would be it. ) but also the best spinach Florentine of my life - hubs had filet and we both had half Caesar salads. It did not go unnoticed that salt and pepper are not on the tables - smart move, don't ruin the genius (if you really still need it, they will provide.) Went to Red on Main on a weekend. Had the shashito stack appetizer which was very good and the Madison Mule, also very good. We then ordered the special, quarter rack of ribs and the Pollo Argentina. The ribs were a little tough and very hard to cut and the chicken had a little too much lime and not enough other seasoning. What a rushed experience. We went for our anniversary while in town at Clifty Falls, and although I loved the food, our dining experience could have been better. We were in and out in an hour, felt like we didn't have adequate time to even look at the drink menu before our server wanted our orders, and I ordered the Wednesday dinner special (Dijon pork + baked potato) and the pork was RAW when I cut a piece off. I couldn't believe it. To make matters worse, our server said, "do you want us to throw this back on the grill, or do you want us to make a new one?" I was baffled. Of course I wanted a new one! Instead, I got my same one back without the large piece I cut off. My husband had the jambalaya and that was great, and once my pork was cooked it was great too. While I was eating, she took away my half-eaten loaded baked potato that I was STILL eating. We felt so rushed. I will say the food we did have was so great, but I can't believe the situation surrounding the raw pork. read more

The latest addition to the Red family in Madison is a little more upscale than the other Red restaurants. The menu is pretty small but everything looked good. I went there twice on my visit to Madison. First I had the portobello mushroom salad and it was excellent. The second time I had the fish and chips. The fish was perfectly cooked and served on a mountain of thin cut fries. I would like to come back on my next trip to Madison and try more of the menu. read more

This has turned into our go to place. We've never been disappointed. Even though we have an establishment much closer a short drive to Red in Main is worth the trip. Their specials are great! The everyday menu finds something for everyone. Some of our favorites are the Chicken Florentine, the Jambalaya Pasta. And shrimp and grits. Highly recommend! Red on Main is an excellent and welcome addition to Madison's downtown dining. We've dined here several times since they opened and the service has always been attentive and friendly and every dish we've tried has been delicious. Some of our favorites are the Cajun BBQ shrimp appetizer (just the right amount of heat), the Pork Medallions, the Bacon Bleu Meatballs and the Red Burger which is served with crispy, extra thin French fries. The dishes are presented well and everything, especially the salads, tastes fresh and flavorful. Love the cozy atmosphere in the bar area with the brick walls and lots of wood. We'll look forward to grabbing late suppers here this summer as it looks like they will be open later than most Madison downtown restaurants - a nice change of pace! read more

We couldn't have been more pleased! On day 1 of our shopping trip on our Anniversary weekend to Madison, IN, we just happened upon Red on Main while strolling through the beautiful downtown shops. We stopped here simply because that's where we were when we decided we were hungry. It was towards the end of lunch service (around 2pm) and we were seated in the front. With only one other table seated, this was the nice quaint, quiet, and relaxing atmosphere we both enjoy. Since we still had some shopping we wanted to do we weren't looking for anything that would sit to heavy. I ordered the half BLT and half house salad with in-house ranch dressing. My wife ordered the chicken Caesar salad with no croutons (she has a gluten intolerance) which is a real shame because the house made croutons I had on my salad were absolutely fantastic. And I would kill to have the recipe for that ranch dressing. Hidden Valley could only DREAM of making a ranch dressing this good! The half BLT was a bigger sandwich than I would half expected for something that was billed as "half". Although I would have liked a bit more bacon, I really enjoyed the sandwich. The chicken Caesar had a perfectly cooked and sliced breast of chicken and just the right amount of dressing. A lot of restaurants can't seem to get the greens to dressing ratio correct on a Caesar salad. This one was very well executed! I was actually shocked at the menu prices and I wonder how this wonderful little restaurant stays afloat! For the level of service and the culinary level of food we received, they could easily price their menu higher than what they do. One thing we really enjoyed was being seated where we could hear the communication between the chef and the expediters. Although they were not busy at the time, the kitchen and wait staff communicated as if both dining rooms were performing a fully booked diner service and were 100% concentrated on their mission. No unnecessary or loud conversation with co-workers, no fussing, and no cussing. Just very professional and focused communication like a proper kitchen brigade should be. On day 2 of our shopping spree in Madison, we would liked to have gone back to Red on Main, but they are unfortunately closed on Sunday and we ended up at Rivertown Grill just a short distance away (a complete opposite experience, I wrote them a review as well). We will certainly be back to Red on Main as we only live an hour away and there is plenty more on the menu we want to try. read more

Has a varied menu, great wait staff, and really knows how to take care of large parties. We worked in advance qwith Sarah for reservations for our family reunion group, 8 adults, and 10 children from grade school age to college. We were assigned two servers who did a wonderful job of handling all orders and keeping drinks refilled. Everything ordered was good food, presented nicely, not one thing to improve. Pork dishes and seafood dishes especially nice. Kids menu just right for the young ones, and the older teens liked the appetizers and burgers.
