Highly recommend! Red on Main is an excellent and welcome addition to Madison's downtown dining. We've dined here several times since they opened and the service has always been attentive and friendly and every dish we've tried has been delicious. Some of our favorites are the Cajun BBQ shrimp appetizer (just the right amount of heat), the Pork Medallions, the Bacon Bleu Meatballs and the Red Burger which is served with crispy, extra thin French fries. The dishes are presented well and everything, especially the salads, tastes fresh and flavorful. Love the cozy atmosphere in the bar area with the brick walls and lots of wood. We'll look forward to grabbing late suppers here this summer as it looks like they will be open later than most Madison downtown restaurants - a nice change of pace! read more

We couldn't have been more pleased! On day 1 of our shopping trip on our Anniversary weekend to Madison, IN, we just happened upon Red on Main while strolling through the beautiful downtown shops. We stopped here simply because that's where we were when we decided we were hungry. It was towards the end of lunch service (around 2pm) and we were seated in the front. With only one other table seated, this was the nice quaint, quiet, and relaxing atmosphere we both enjoy. Since we still had some shopping we wanted to do we weren't looking for anything that would sit to heavy. I ordered the half BLT and half house salad with in-house ranch dressing. My wife ordered the chicken Caesar salad with no croutons (she has a gluten intolerance) which is a real shame because the house made croutons I had on my salad were absolutely fantastic. And I would kill to have the recipe for that ranch dressing. Hidden Valley could only DREAM of making a ranch dressing this good! The half BLT was a bigger sandwich than I would half expected for something that was billed as "half". Although I would have liked a bit more bacon, I really enjoyed the sandwich. The chicken Caesar had a perfectly cooked and sliced breast of chicken and just the right amount of dressing. A lot of restaurants can't seem to get the greens to dressing ratio correct on a Caesar salad. This one was very well executed! I was actually shocked at the menu prices and I wonder how this wonderful little restaurant stays afloat! For the level of service and the culinary level of food we received, they could easily price their menu higher than what they do. One thing we really enjoyed was being seated where we could hear the communication between the chef and the expediters. Although they were not busy at the time, the kitchen and wait staff communicated as if both dining rooms were performing a fully booked diner service and were 100% concentrated on their mission. No unnecessary or loud conversation with co-workers, no fussing, and no cussing. Just very professional and focused communication like a proper kitchen brigade should be. On day 2 of our shopping spree in Madison, we would liked to have gone back to Red on Main, but they are unfortunately closed on Sunday and we ended up at Rivertown Grill just a short distance away (a complete opposite experience, I wrote them a review as well). We will certainly be back to Red on Main as we only live an hour away and there is plenty more on the menu we want to try. read more

This has turned into our go to place. We've never been disappointed. Even though we have an establishment much closer a short drive to Red in Main is worth the trip. Their specials are great! The everyday menu finds something for everyone. Some of our favorites are the Chicken Florentine, the Jambalaya Pasta. And shrimp and grits. Has a varied menu, great wait staff, and really knows how to take care of large parties. We worked in advance qwith Sarah for reservations for our family reunion group, 8 adults, and 10 children from grade school age to college. We were assigned two servers who did a wonderful job of handling all orders and keeping drinks refilled. Everything ordered was good food, presented nicely, not one thing to improve. Pork dishes and seafood dishes especially nice. Kids menu just right for the young ones, and the older teens liked the appetizers and burgers. Host and servers very rude. The host glanced at us as we walked in the door and bolted to stand by a table. She impatiently stomped her foot when we didn't realize we were meant to follow her. My husband and I dined here while in Madison and the experience was wonderful. We are from out of town and came here to pick up a dog from a local breeder. A really bad experience last week, and they weren't busy yet when we arrived. The worst drinks (Whiskey Sour and Pomegranate Martini) were both way too tart. Appetizer of oversized Crab Rangoon was oily. My salmon on a salad was completely raw in the middle. Its, not a sushi restaurant, so I didn't trust it at all. The waitress was completely understanding about the salmon, so her tip was on the full bill, even though she deducted the upcharge for the fish. We won't go back here, unfortunately. read more

This was seriously one of the worst experiences I have had recently. It all started out well and everyone was extremely friendly. That's about where it ended. We ordered mussels which were the appetizer-they where fishy smelling and we ordered 2'orders, only to be served one plate. But we were charged for 2. We waited over 49 minutes between finishing our app and receiving our meals. When it finally came the special was nothing special and the vegetables were raw. Overall I waited 2 hours and spent $200 on a dinner that was so disappointing. Next time I will choose the local pizza place as recommended. read more

The food was mediocre and overpriced. Ordered a Delmonico steak, only to find they were out of baked potatoes (how can you run out of those) and only a choice between 2 vegetables. The steak was undercooked as were the green beans. My sister ordered a pasta dish that had to be sent back because it was overloaded with salt. Mixed bag and ridiculous fee! This was our second time visiting Red On Main. Both times the appetizers and salad were great, the entrees ho hum. Tonight we ordered the special appetizer was a lime spicy hummus and it was great. We then ordered one garden salad with no comment that we were both eating it. It was delivered with an extra plate underneath. Salad was very good. My husband had the prime rib special which he said was ok, had better. Due to his diet he wanted to substitute something for the mashed potatoes but was told not on specials. I had the bbq chicken that was heavily coated with a thick sauce. The chicken was good but a little salty after I scraped off most of the sauce. The spaghetti squash was great, which I shared with my husband. The kicker is that we were charged $4 for the extra plate that was served under our salad! That was ridiculous. Spoke to the manager asking for that charge to be removed. A split salad should be SERVED both plates. She would not remove it. We will not be back... read more

The bar is open at 3pm. They have a great cucumber gimlet and really nice staff who are fun to chat with at the bar. They are following the mask rule and all staff were wearing a mask. Hope this place does well and stays around! read more

This was the best damn meal I've had in a long time! Sat in the back, the bar area, which was nice during these cold months, because it seemed a little warmer back there. Service was so friendly and attentive. We got a Madison Mule off the drink menu to start off with and the garlic bree toast appetizer. Both were incredible. Then I ordered the special, grouper and rice, and my wife ordered the pesto pasta with vegetables and chicken. Hot dang, again, both were incredible. Lastly, because we are Americans and on our 10 year anniversary we thought we'd seal the deal with desserts. Peach cobbler and chocolate mousse. I'm a chocoholic, and the mousse was so good, but the peach cobbler was the best cobbler I have ever tasted in my life. My boyfriend and I took a long weekend trip to Madison and on our 3 night trip, we went to Red on Main twice - once for lunch and once for dinner. The chef there is clearly excellently trained and has a wonderful vision for pairing flavors and textures together. The first night that we got to Madison, we came here for dinner and got the roasted garlic toasts and then split the pork medallions and both of them were truly divine. The roasted garlic toasts were a very innovate plating which I hadn't seen before - there was a bulb of roasted garlic that you could pull out with a knife and slathered on a crispy piece of toast and a slice of brie. The roasted garlic definitely had a great bite because you're eating a literal clove (or cloves) of garlic but because it was roasted it was very toned down and had a pleasant nutty flavor. The pork medallions were perfectly cooked - ever so slightly pink and incredibly tender. The brussel sprouts were so crispy and had a kick to it (garlic mixed with something else). It also had something similar to fondant potatoes that were extremely crispy on the outside but were the perfect consistency on the inside. They were tender but still had a wonderful bite to them - definitely not overcooked like a lot of people make it. The pork, brussel spouts, and potatoes had a wonderful soy-based sauce that tied everything together artistically. We finished our dinner with a Hungarian chocolate cake which was the first time in a while that we had left a dinner on a high note (a lot of places just can't get dessert right). The ganache was well-balanced and not too rich, the cake was extremely light and moist. For lunch today, I got the fish and chips and as someone who was born in Florida and had a grandfather who was a fisherman - I was extremely happy. The batter was so crispy and well-cooked and IT DIDN'T FALL OFF THE FISH! The fish itself tasted quite fresh and the contrast between the light and flaky fish and the hearty and flavorful tempura batter was perfect. I also got a half Caesar salad and it was one of the best Caesar salads that I have had - and that is my go-to work lunch. The Caesar dressing tasted homemade and was a lot lighter and creamier than a lot of other dressings. The croutons were a wonderful crunch and had a great garlic and herb flavor. The Parmesan was well chosen because it had a lovely nutty flavor that contributed to a very flavorful and dynamic salad. The service was wonderful - we had the same waitress both times and she was busting her ass both times to ensure that everyone was extremely happy with their service and their meals. Best place that we went in Madison and I would highly highly recommend this to anyone to go to for a wonderful lunch or dinner. read more

We were met at the door by a young man who told us we could sit anywhere "and the back is open too". Not knowing what that meant we sat in the front. Don't do that. Tables are too close together so you feel like you are eating a meal with strangers. Decor is boring, My view was a blank wall the color of melted vanilla ice cream. Music is loud and a boring mix of 70s and 80s greatest hits. The breeze from the door constantly opening and closing is not pleasant. Maybe things are different in the back. All of this would have been tolerable if the food had been great. It wasn't. We were there for lunch. Food was mediocre and forgettable. The whole place felt like it was trying too hard and failing. Stopped for lunch. Great steak taco lunch special, best I've had in awhile in the midwest. Wife had the shrimp po boy that was stuffed with shrimp and came with those crunchy shoestring fries. Stood at front of half empty restaurant by host/hostess stand and watched three different people working there see us and ignore us for 5+ minutes. Recently visited Red On Main while in Madison Indiana. Enjoyed the atmosphere and the downtown location. The food was good. Could have used more seasoning on my steak. The butter was good. Just not salty enough for my taste. My biggest complaint is the glasses for water and soda drinks were too small. We ran out of drinks very quickly and they were very busy. Random dining choice while visiting daughter at Hanover. Chose just based on photos of food. Pub shrooms were a big surprise, wife loved the chicken Florentine (large serving) and will try salmon on another visit. I saw a few people with tenderloins on the way to be seated and they were great with good portions and substituted potatoes for fries. Brussels spouts we're great, nothing fancy but surprisingly good. Sat close to the bar and saw several nice wine pours. Server was Travis. Just a great experience and walked out stuffed! read more

A group of 3 couples visited Madison recently for a mini-vacation. I can't say enough nice things about the excellent quality of the food, drinks, and service. The menu has a good selection of appetizers, soups, salads and entrees that offer creativity rooted in a traditional sensibility. Within our group, we ordered 3 appetizers: shrimp, meatballs with tomato sauce and fried mushrooms with horseradish dip. All three were excellent. Our group ordered shrimp and jalapeño grits, New York strip steak, Jambalaya pasta and more. Everything was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly. The jambalaya pasta was perky spicy. The jalapeño grits and creole sauce were mildly spiced and were a perfect complement to the cheese grits and did not overwhelm the fish. The Cabernet wine was delicious. If you are looking for a nice place to go to dinner in Madison, this is it. read more
