This was seriously one of the worst experiences I have had recently. It all started out well and everyone was extremely friendly. That's about where it ended. We ordered mussels which were the appetizer-they where fishy smelling and we ordered 2'orders, only to be served one plate. But we were charged for 2. We waited over 49 minutes between finishing our app and receiving our meals. When it finally came the special was nothing special and the vegetables were raw. Overall I waited 2 hours and spent $200 on a dinner that was so disappointing. Next time I will choose the local pizza place as recommended. read more

A really bad experience last week, and they weren't busy yet when we arrived. The worst drinks (Whiskey Sour and Pomegranate Martini) were both way too tart. Appetizer of oversized Crab Rangoon was oily. My salmon on a salad was completely raw in the middle. Its, not a sushi restaurant, so I didn't trust it at all. The waitress was completely understanding about the salmon, so her tip was on the full bill, even though she deducted the upcharge for the fish. We won't go back here, unfortunately. read more

We were met at the door by a young man who told us we could sit anywhere "and the back is open too". Not knowing what that meant we sat in the front. Don't do that. Tables are too close together so you feel like you are eating a meal with strangers. Decor is boring, My view was a blank wall the color of melted vanilla ice cream. Music is loud and a boring mix of 70s and 80s greatest hits. The breeze from the door constantly opening and closing is not pleasant. Maybe things are different in the back. All of this would have been tolerable if the food had been great. It wasn't. We were there for lunch. Food was mediocre and forgettable. The whole place felt like it was trying too hard and failing. This was the best damn meal I've had in a long time! Sat in the back, the bar area, which was nice during these cold months, because it seemed a little warmer back there. Service was so friendly and attentive. We got a Madison Mule off the drink menu to start off with and the garlic bree toast appetizer. Both were incredible. Then I ordered the special, grouper and rice, and my wife ordered the pesto pasta with vegetables and chicken. Hot dang, again, both were incredible. Lastly, because we are Americans and on our 10 year anniversary we thought we'd seal the deal with desserts. Peach cobbler and chocolate mousse. I'm a chocoholic, and the mousse was so good, but the peach cobbler was the best cobbler I have ever tasted in my life. Stood at front of half empty restaurant by host/hostess stand and watched three different people working there see us and ignore us for 5+ minutes. My boyfriend and I took a long weekend trip to Madison and on our 3 night trip, we went to Red on Main twice - once for lunch and once for dinner. The chef there is clearly excellently trained and has a wonderful vision for pairing flavors and textures together. The first night that we got to Madison, we came here for dinner and got the roasted garlic toasts and then split the pork medallions and both of them were truly divine. The roasted garlic toasts were a very innovate plating which I hadn't seen before - there was a bulb of roasted garlic that you could pull out with a knife and slathered on a crispy piece of toast and a slice of brie. The roasted garlic definitely had a great bite because you're eating a literal clove (or cloves) of garlic but because it was roasted it was very toned down and had a pleasant nutty flavor. The pork medallions were perfectly cooked - ever so slightly pink and incredibly tender. The brussel sprouts were so crispy and had a kick to it (garlic mixed with something else). It also had something similar to fondant potatoes that were extremely crispy on the outside but were the perfect consistency on the inside. They were tender but still had a wonderful bite to them - definitely not overcooked like a lot of people make it. The pork, brussel spouts, and potatoes had a wonderful soy-based sauce that tied everything together artistically. We finished our dinner with a Hungarian chocolate cake which was the first time in a while that we had left a dinner on a high note (a lot of places just can't get dessert right). The ganache was well-balanced and not too rich, the cake was extremely light and moist. For lunch today, I got the fish and chips and as someone who was born in Florida and had a grandfather who was a fisherman - I was extremely happy. The batter was so crispy and well-cooked and IT DIDN'T FALL OFF THE FISH! The fish itself tasted quite fresh and the contrast between the light and flaky fish and the hearty and flavorful tempura batter was perfect. I also got a half Caesar salad and it was one of the best Caesar salads that I have had - and that is my go-to work lunch. The Caesar dressing tasted homemade and was a lot lighter and creamier than a lot of other dressings. The croutons were a wonderful crunch and had a great garlic and herb flavor. The Parmesan was well chosen because it had a lovely nutty flavor that contributed to a very flavorful and dynamic salad. The service was wonderful - we had the same waitress both times and she was busting her ass both times to ensure that everyone was extremely happy with their service and their meals. Best place that we went in Madison and I would highly highly recommend this to anyone to go to for a wonderful lunch or dinner. read more

Recently visited Red On Main while in Madison Indiana. Enjoyed the atmosphere and the downtown location. The food was good. Could have used more seasoning on my steak. The butter was good. Just not salty enough for my taste. My biggest complaint is the glasses for water and soda drinks were too small. We ran out of drinks very quickly and they were very busy. We had to stop eating a few times because we had nothing to wash down our food with. read more

Random dining choice while visiting daughter at Hanover. Chose just based on photos of food. Pub shrooms were a big surprise, wife loved the chicken Florentine (large serving) and will try salmon on another visit. I saw a few people with tenderloins on the way to be seated and they were great with good portions and substituted potatoes for fries. Stopped for lunch. Great steak taco lunch special, best I've had in awhile in the midwest. Wife had the shrimp po boy that was stuffed with shrimp and came with those crunchy shoestring fries. We had a fabulous dinner! My filet was tender and full of flavor. My husband had the jambalaya pasta and loved it. Our daughter had the tuna and it was perfection. my husband and I read all the reviews how great everything was so we wanted to try it out, and boy was that a mistake. we waited over two hours to be sat to then get there see how people have been sat and marked off that had came in after us, so my husband just simply asked why we people That came in after us was sat first, and the host immediately got an attitude.. she then looked at us and said "if you know where the bar is go on back there and sit" like what we've never been here we have no idea the layout of the place. she (the host) then continued to come back to the bar and make indirect comments... our server Travis was wonderful! A group of 3 couples visited Madison recently for a mini-vacation. I can't say enough nice things about the excellent quality of the food, drinks, and service. The menu has a good selection of appetizers, soups, salads and entrees that offer creativity rooted in a traditional sensibility. Within our group, we ordered 3 appetizers: shrimp, meatballs with tomato sauce and fried mushrooms with horseradish dip. All three were excellent. Our group ordered shrimp and jalapeño grits, New York strip steak, Jambalaya pasta and more. Everything was delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly. The jambalaya pasta was perky spicy. The jalapeño grits and creole sauce were mildly spiced and were a perfect complement to the cheese grits and did not overwhelm the fish. The Cabernet wine was delicious. If you are looking for a nice place to go to dinner in Madison, this is it. read more

I ordered the black and bleu salad, one of my favorite dinner salads, and couldn't have been more disappointed. The description on the menu is "Seasoned beef + bleu cheese crumbles + red onion + tomatoes + croutons + tossed with smoky bleu cheese dressing." I have never had a black and bleu salad anywhere that wasn't a blackened sirloin steak (hence "black") cooked to order then sliced and placed on the salad. The black and bleu salad at Red on Main was literally cold, well done deli roast beef slices like you'd put on a sandwich, minimal bleu cheese crumbles, minimal sliced red onions, and minimal cherry tomatoes. It was pathetic and I've never seen anything like that before, and I've had black and bleu salads at MANY places all over the country. Cute place and the service was great but they need to either learn how to make a proper black and bleu salad or remove it from the menu, because the current version is inedible garbage. read more

Went expecting a nice meal this past Saturday night. After all, their pricing leads one to believe that is not too much to ask. On the way to our table, we walked right past customer's food orders waiting to be served to them. And, I mean we could have reached out and done anything to the food. Without anyone working there noticing. - We ordered two steaks. One a filet. I asked for it to be butter-flied as I wanted it well done. It took much longer than it should have to receive the dinners. But, that was alright. However; when the dinners arrived, the filet (supposed to be butter-flied and well done) was not butter-flied and was bleeding when I cut the end off of it to check. - Obviously, had to send it back. It returned 20 minutes later. Not only still red in the middle. They didn't even send the piece of steak, that I had initially cut off, back to me. I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT! - The other steak was not cooked correctly either. I could go on about the dissatisfaction about this place, for my date and me. I won't. Will just say that neither of us will ever return.
