We arrived around 4:00 so it wasn't overly busy other than a few carry out orders. We had a very quiet and peaceful dine in dinner. You order and pay at the counter before sitting down. The Mrs. went up and ordered while . A while later, the lady brought out crab rangoon, fried wontons, and a shareable plate of moo goo gai pan and said "more coming." This is not your traditional Chinese take out. Yes you can carry out but that quality of the food is spot on! Fresh vegetables and meat. My mm comes here every Sunday and swears by it. It is a little bit more expensive than the usual chines take out, but it's worth the cost. They also have pad dishes too, check out menu board to left of counter. The place hold about 5 tables and you can tell By the service this is a family run business. Had Garlic Scallops, Pad Thai, Crab Rangoons, and vegetable fried rice. They're doing take out only, but that could change quickly. We sat outside and watched the street parade of tourists in Madison as we ate. The flavors were good. We suspect lots of MSG, and mention this for those that eschew it. The crab rangoons had little flavor, unfortunately. Every thing was as expected. Their menu of standard Chinese fare is extensive, and there are Szechuan and Hunan selections. The MSG kind of bugged us, but spicing was to our order (hot; mild is the default) and the portion sizes were big. A saving grace is that they know how to do tofu well. Overall, nothing bad, spiced correctly, but nothing stellar, signature, or pushes it to another star or two. This used to be the best Chinese restaurant in Madison. My favorite dish was General Tso's chicken. The sauce just had the right amount of heat and sweet. We went there the other day and my chicken tasted like it was just made with soy sauce. The sauce had a much darker color also. It was so salty I couldn't eat it and it went into the trash. I am not sure what the new owners have done with the food but it's definitely not the same. read more

Late night dinner spots in Madison, Indiana are few and far between. My father and I went to Hong Kong Kitchen at 7:30pm for dinner mid week. It's a walk-up counter, order/pay. We decided to eat there which was an interesting twist as they serve you like you're in a sit down restaurant. It was cozy. He ordered Curry Chicken and I ordered my own personal favorite dish - Beef & Broccoli.  He enjoyed the Curry immensely. My beef and broccoli was amazing.  It didn't have the syrupy sauce on it like typical Chinese restaurants; it had more of a brothy consistency. It was light and delicious.  The egg roll was so good; I split it with my dad. I kind of wished I hadn't - I wanted more. Crispy outside and perfect blend of seasoning and veggies on the inside. We also ordered soup - he had Hot & Sour and I had Egg Drop soup.  The soups were also very good. Fresh ingredients, good flavor, again not syrupy.  A nice treat. Tea was fresh.  Service was great. Finally a fresh to order, super tasting place to enjoy excellent Thai and Chinese dishes. So good, lemon chicken is great served with a thin slightly tart sauce. Thai green curry chicken was in a perfectly spiced bowl of green curry broth with chunks of broccoli and onions and green peppers to make it extra tasty while served with white rice. Order at the counter and food is brought to you on real plates and at the end of the meal they brought us a fried donut. Drinks come in bottles. Some of the best Chinese around. This place has you call in orders only and then carry out due to Covid. We stood outside and called in an order. It was good. Busy place that appears to stay busy. My moo goo gai pan was about the best ever. My wife said sweet and sour chicken was average but still good. No tables for outside dining. After cooking a huge Thanksgiving meal this year, I went on strike for Christmas and decided to order takeout. I had a pretty big order to place on Christmas Eve so I called a few hours early before pickup. Honestly, since this was my first time trying HKK, I was skeptical that the order would be hot and ready. Everything was delicious and the food was a big hit at our family gathering! They were also kind enough to throw in some hot sugared doughnuts that were scrumptious. For a gathering of 5 I spent about the same or less than if I had cooked a huge meal. We also had plenty of leftovers for 2 on Christmas Day. The Singapore noodles were especially popular. The only negative was that they put peas in their fried rice, which I hate, and they wouldn't leave them out as it wasn't optional. I just picked out the peas. Also, don't forget to grab condiments on your way out. I didn't realize they were not packed with the order. Luckily I had plenty at home as I am a condiment addict, so it wasn't an issue. Had the Hot and Sour soup and Kung Pao platter with pork fried rice. The soup was very good and probably the hottest (spiciest) version I ever had. The Kung Pao was also good with shrimp, scallops and chicken. Also quite hot as it should be. Maybe a little heavy on the sauce and salt, but enjoyable. Went to Madison on Friday to hike in Clifty Falls. It was a late lunch but decided to eat at Hong Kong kitchen. The restaurant is right in old town Madison on the main street. Inside it is very clean. You order at the window in the back as you overlook the entire kitchen and watch your food being made to order. The food selection is excellent and varied. The taste and quality is good to very good. The lunch special runs from 11-3 and is a very full plate of one entree and rice. Their specialty is pork fried rice. Had egg drop soup that was excellent. For only $5.75, it is a lot of food. This place is a solid performer that i recomend. While we there it seemed a lot of locals are there. read more

Hong Kong Kitchen is the best place to eat downtown Madison. We eat there every time we have a chance. The food is always fresh and hot. It doesn't matter what you order it's freshly made and good. I love when you come in you order your food they make it right then and now. I've been in to order and they are setting down to eat themselves they wait until you order and when she calls out that person that's in charge of that area they get up make they make the order the other go on eating. Very nice staff, a clean dining area, and convenient location. The food was served promptly, was piping hot, and standard. Unfortunately not amazing, though. Pad Thai had no heat at all, very little chicken, only a few bean sprouts for vegetables. Seemed the peanuts might have been a little stale. General tso chicken seeemed to be sauce over frozen popcorn chicken bits. I ordered the coconut shrimp specifically because I know that doesn't come with sauce on it and the shrimp that came was basically fried shrimp with a creamy cum looking sauce that barley tasted like coconuts. I took it up to the counter to get a refund because what I ordered and what I got were two completely different things and the owner wouldn't refund me even though he agreed that it wasn't even real coconut shrimp! I also had the fried rice because who can mess that up and it was severely over cooked and the vegetables that were in it tasted like they were poured from a frozen mixed veggie bag. And they don't have any kind of plate that allows you to have the option of chow main and rice... um wtf read more

Amongst the places to eat in the downtown area, Hong Kong Kitchen is, by far, the best as quality of food goes. They serve the best General Tso's I have ever had, and their chicken teryiaki is solid as well. Now our kids (ages 3 and 6) ask for Chinese on nights we eat out because they love the food here so much.
