I was a little nervous walking in because the curb appeal is not the best. The inside of the restaurant needs to be updated. But the food is really good. The fried potstickers were tasty. The maki rolls we ordered were good. The salad with ginger dressing is simple but flavorful dressing. The noodle bowl I ordered with chicken was huge and packed with veggies and chicken. Yummy. My sever was very young and uninformed about the menu and not too attentive. The food was ok not good or bad but my sushi was not good at all. Looked like when I tried a diy sushi night. Along with that they gave me the wrong roll and refused to fix it. They told me i ordered something that I'm allergic to lol. Wouldn't ever go back. With Madison being a small town, it is refreshing to see a place like Yamato. You would not guess based on the outside that the inside is a nice, rather sophisticated decór. A friend goes there frequently for lunch and suggested I try it. While the menu may not be as robust as what you would find in larger markets/cities, what you do get are ample size portions, well made, and nicely displayed on the served dishes. I most recently tried a crunch munch roll...delicious, and a spicy tuna roll, which was just the right amount of heat. Prices are comparable to places in Louisville. I've been a handful of times now and each time the staff have been friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about items on the menu. read more

Wow! When I pulled into the parking lot, I thought hmmmm doesn't look very appetizing. But when I walked in I was totally taken back, very clean very nice. Now let's get to the good stuff. I ordered the hibachi with the fillet friend of mine he ordered the sushi. The hibachi was absolutely delicious amazing my steak was cooked perfectly. My friend said his sushi was the freshest fish that he had ever had in sushi and he lives on the East Coast. Not usually a complainer, but this was a terrible experience and ashamed to have them in my hometown. Server was uninformed about the menu, all the sushi was the the same room temp. Place was empty on a Sat eve and couldn't get the server to check in regularly. Cashier didn't know how to run credit card machine. Only item I felt was cooked well was the spicy shrimp appetizer and the decor was nice. Will not return though. read more

Terrible sushi. I lived in Japan for years and know what shushi should taste like and this is not it. I guess if I want great tasting sushi I need to go to Fresh Cuts in Hanover. Prices are higher but worth it. Server was terrible. They were not busy but our server only came to bring the food and never checked on us to see if we needed a refill on our drinks.
