While this one does offer a buffet option, they don't have enough options to really make that worthwhile. The other place is the buffet place. This is the cafeteria place, but it's not as expensive, and the food is just as good. And you get plenty of it in the meal. I'm a big eater, and I'm always satisfied by the plate lunch. Outside of the building, you can see the farm where a lot of their food is grown. I've been here probably a dozen times, and each time was a treat, with fresh food from their local gardens and farms. Unlike Stoll's, they grow their own foods. Like I said, it's authentic Amish. The cafeteria style tables make for a more pleasant and comfortable atmosphere than Stoll's. Surprisingly, the restrooms here are cleaner than Stoll's, where the restrooms are often out of order. This is a much more pleasant experience at Schwartz's. The servers are very nice and helpful. There is a small area for their Amish store of honey, fresh vegetables, and other delights. Where they excel is their pies. While their competitor uses cheap packet pies, Schwartz's has homemade pies, all fresh. I highly recommend the blueberry cream pie and the peach pie. A nice view of the rural surroundings, even if it is on the highway, but so is the other Amish place. The atmosphere is very nice. There is a lot of good feeling in the air. Sometimes, there are folk style musicians in the adjoining room, if you go for that. This is a customer friendly place, and they care about what they do and about the people they serve.

I thought the chicken was good,. So per the menu for the three-piece fried chicken meal, you can only order either all white meat or all dark meat. Interestingly, the two people at our table that ordered white meat still got a drumstick with their meat. The last I checked, drumsticks were considered dark meat. For an appetizer, we ordered the hush puppies. They had a nice crunchy texture but were very spicy hot. We also ordered the spoonbread. This was my favorite dish of the day. It was served warm, had a great texture and a light maple flavor. With our meals, we could get two sides. We requested the collard greens, green beans, fries, grits and mac & cheese. Only the mac & cheese was good. The collard greens were way salty and the green beans had odd and unexpected seasonings. Our dining companion was put out, and understandably so, that the menu said the grits came with white cheddar cheese. But instead, though the grits maybe had cheese, they were also loaded with loads of diced jalapeno. They were so over the top spicy, none of us could eat the grits. The fries were strongly seasoned with oregano. WTF? Our entrees came with biscuits. The biscuits were tasty, but unfortunately, because they contained too much shortening, fell apart when buttering them. And that leads up to the service lapse. After we received our check, our server completely disappeared. We waited a half hour for her to re-appear, gave up and asked another server to cash us out. He disappeared and we waited some more. Finally the red-headed server re-appeared and breezily explained she had been out on the deck the whole time. No apology or anything.

Crispy outside, tender inside. She ordered her fries crispy but they were served flabby. This is one of the few restaurants that prices are still reasonable. She obliged with a kindness that made me think she knew me somehow. She chose the chicken and dumplings, beef stew, apples, and two different types of corn bread. Now, I thought initially, and she even admitted, that the chicken and dumplings/beef stew mix was a little unorthodox, but that they were both so good I had to try them. Both were fantastic. The apples were awesome. I liked both types of corn bread. When I got up to leave, she called me over to the counter and said that since it was my first time there, I'd get a free dessert. You all, I was too full to even try. The food here is both tasty and filling. I was in Richmond for a conference at Eastern Kentucky University. So it was really convenient to stop by.
