Came here with the hubby. It's in the middle of nowhere, but large, and very clean and tidy. I was a little bit disappointed in the buffet because although the food was good, there weren't very many options. They had a young woman to serve items on the buffet but that made it go a lot slower as there were quite a few people there. Food was definitely good, but not good enough that I would go again. I already reviewed Schwarts but like happens commonly on Yelp that one mysteriously disappeared. So here we go again, only shorter. We had a great experience it's a ways off the main freeway but the drive is beautiful and worth taking, enjoy the scenery. Once inside it was clear this was where a lot of locals come for lunch, mostly workers, truckers, farmers, ranchers, craftspeople, etc. They all seemed to know each other which made it all the more inviting to us. Having lived in a few smaller towns we appreciate that community only a local restaurant can attract. The food was what I would call homestyle, good quality but not fancy, not overly presented or complicated. This is downhome food, well made that locals can enjoy every day. The prices were more than fair, and the service was friendly and helpful. Outside there is a playground for the kids and a pumpkin farm across the way too. read more

Good choice for an after a day on Patoka Lake. It's just okay. Steam table food offerings served cafeteria style. Fried chicken, a lasagna style pasta, meatloaf were the main choices. You can choose between a set amount or all you can eat. I wish things had a bit more seasoning- everything was pretty bland to my tastes, but would be a great place to take your English, no pepper, friends. Tables are communal long, church or picnic style and the room is large and noisy with concrete floors so not terrific for those with hearing loss, but your kiddos can be as loud as they wish and it won't disturb anyone! Most folks were dressed super casually- post day at the lake- but be sure you have a swim coverup at least! Ample parking area has room for boat parking too. Super busy, but the line went fast. Our group of five enjoyed Sunday lunch here. You go through a cafeteria line to get your food. You can get a meal or all you care to eat. There was a large variety of entrees, sides and desserts. This is a bit off the road trip highway commute, but worth it if you like comfort food! It's about a total 10 min detour going there and back to the highway. Cafeteria style setup - you go through the line and pick your entrée, sides and desserts. You kinda need to have a plan before you start. Check the menu and decide if you are doing a dinner - entree with sides - or AYCE - a few bucks more but unlimited. I opted for unlimited because I knew I wanted a dessert and once I added that it was only a $4 difference. Let me tell you I made that $3 up in food! I was lucky there was a local in line by me and she gave me the scoop so I was prepared. I tried just about EVERYTHING (see picture of my plate lol). Here's my faves: -fried chicken, get a couple pieces, its that good -meatloaf, so moist and great flavor - mashed potatoes, perfect texture, buttery flavor - cheesy brocolli - delicious - mac n cheese, LOVED the sauce and it was a bit runny which I like - buttered noodles, LOVE the noodle and had a good flavor -coconut cream pie, amazing texture, best cream filling I've ever had! -bread slice with homemade peanut butter, so soft and warm and WOW Things that were good, but I wouldn't order again because, well see above lol - lasagna, heavy on cheesy, I prefer meaty - chicken and noodles/dumplings, kinda plain, not my preference - chocolate cake, was dry, I didn't finish it (I know I can't believe I'm even typing this lol!) Once you have your tray you pick a seat and eat. If you purchase all you can eat and want more but the line is full, don't worry employees come around to check on you and they will grab you an item so you don't have to wait again. Overall the stop is very efficient and tasty. The food is better than I even hoped! The service is friendly and helpful. One employee even offered to put runny items in their own bowls which I greatly appreciated! If you are driving by - STOP HERE! If you live nearby - GO HERE EVERY WEEK! Great service and food. Staff were very friendly and very helpful once they knew my friends and I were there the first time. They have many options for you to choose from. Take-out, buffet, or simply ordering plate by plate all work. The servings are huge (the servers won't hold back!) and they have homemade desserts as well. The staff is extremely friendly. Great service. Great food. They also have a small gift shop inside the restaurant where you can purchase t-shirts and such. You can buy jellies and jams as well as tomatoes and grapes. I'm not sure if all the staff were related, but there was definitely a family feel and vibe. The food was filling and delicious. My family stopped in here on a recent Saturday and loved it. We were in the area for a family function and saw the signs for Schwartz on I64. It was worth the visit. Everyone LOVED the fried chicken! The mashed potatoes, pot roast, mac and cheese, and green beans were also a big hit. Overall I don't think we left anything uneaten. Even from the 3yr old and 7yr old's plates. A few of our kids enjoyed ice cream after their meal while we let the little ones bundle up and enjoy Schwartz' really cool play set outside. Service was also excellent. Lena was the manager on duty and made sure our family was taken care. True southern Indiana hospitality. I even bought some locally made chocolate covered peanuts for the road from Schwartz' retail selection. If you're on the road to French Lick or in the area, Schwartz is worth the stop. read more

Good buffet, decent cost and all the pie you can eat!!! Yes, pie before my meal and another after, yes I am full. Meatloaf was the best meat option. Veggies are good and sour cream potatoes are amazing and homemade with chunks of potatoes that delight your tastebuds. Fresh bread slices are great, white was the best. There is real butter to spread on the bread. Salad bar had lots of toppings, also delicious pickled cucumbers and a sour slaw. Pie!!! Cherry was my starter and the crust and tart berries were extra delicious. Next one was a Blackberry pie, but the filling holding it was too gelatinous so back to the cherry. The huge bill board I saw said "Family Restaurant" - in the Mid-West, that means home cooking. We followed the sign to this vast expanse of a restaurant and were a little put off because the parking lot was near empty and the restaurant had one customer. Then I glanced down at my watch and saw it was 11:25AM on a Tuesday - maybe a little early for people who actually work for a living. The young woman behind the counter gave us the nickel tour, showing us the freshly cooked options and I decided that this could be the best meal we have had since we got to Indiana, 4 days ago. We had meat loaf, green beans and sour cream cheddar potatoes. In a word, WOW! Seriously good home cooking. Those potatoes are, as we say in NJ, ta die for... The meat loaf was juicy, hot and gently spiced. The green beans - they had bacon bits in there - real bacon, not from a jar bacon - so good, I ate every bit. The bill was a very reasonable $11 with a piece of - sorry to say - just OK cherry pie (my friend had the pecan pie and raved). As we ate, several regular customers came in and, being nosey, I asked their thoughts. They spoke highly of the food, family atmosphere and the value. If this restaurant was in my part of the world, there would be a line out the door every minute of the day - the food is that good. Best meal I have had in Indiana and I have eaten a lot over 4 days. Meh. I saw the billboard on I-64 which promised "Amish cooking" and "everything made from scratch." I don't know what the first term is supposed to refer to, but I do understand the second, and the Schwartz's fell flat on that account. I stopped for breakfast, and it may well have been made from "scratch" in the kitchens of Sysco. The ads also touted "family style serving." I admire anybody in the restaurant biz - it's tough going. And this seems to be the perfect watering hole for the local rural community - meaning I am doubtful they get many tourists, it's five miles off the interstate on a road to nowhere. In retrospect, as I got further down (west) on I-64, there were quite a few billboards for "Amish" restaurants. Here's what I got out of the experience. I had stopped for breakfast, which they serve on weekends only. Apparently the balance of meal service, every day, is "cafeteria style," which to me is not the same as "family style," which I take to mean platters of food brought to the table for all to share, like I had in Wisconsin Dells at the Paul Bunyan Cook Shanty. (mmm, platters of breakfast pork meats!). The breakfast menu was limited. Egg dishes, biscuits and gravy (which seemed to be a popular order), pancakes. I ordered the "breakfast casserole," an unusual choice for me. Scrambled eggs, bread crumbs, bacon, sausage, cheese, with hash browns and toast. There weren't that many customers, and there was an abundance of server help, but the food was slow, service 'confused' and sorry, folks, but nothing special. Like I implied above, I really don't think that much of it was "from scratch." Servers (which may have been all family members) were not very knowledgeable about the dishes. Anyway, it was OK. I can't recommend it, really, but I can't say "don't go," either. They are customers of Sysco, that was evident from the condiments and other table products. And as I don't care about healthy eating, I'd prefer butter on the table to "whipped topping." But maybe that's what the Amish are known for. I strongly suspect the lunch and dinner offerings would be much better. I would try it again if I was passing through the area. read more

The fried chicken was delicious as where each of the sides. The resturant was clean and the staff was friendly. This place was perfect. We found it last minute on our way into Louisville from Californian. It's about five minutes north of the 64 but we'll worth the short drive. The food was like going to my grandmothers house for dinner and it's a very clean sanitary place. The lasagna and egg noodles were my favorite. It was a tough choice bc the strawberry pie looked awesome too!! Every item is home made like mom or grandma would make! The staff was sweet and helpful. The building was impeccably clean. This place is an ideal "all you can eat place" for people like me, who dislike buffets... where tens of people touch the serving utensils grosses me out. They serve you here. Call it cafeteria style if you want to, but the food is anything like any cafeteria I've been to. It's about five miles from I-64 and well worth the drive... unless it's on a Monday, which is the day of the week that they are closed. My experience was lunch on a Wednesday. As I stood in line, the locals chit chatted with me about how awesome the place is. Apparently Wednesday is Senior Day... what that means, I'm not sure, that's just what the regular today told me. The food line wasn't all that bad considering there was only one girl working it as I went through. They could use a better organization in that area. We weren't exactly sure how it all worked, so here are a few pointers... -You don't have to get the all you can eat option. There's a menu board behind the food line. -First you pick up your utensils from the opposite side of the register. -The desserts are included in the price and are the first thing that you gawk at as you wait in line. -First you choose your meat options... don't worry about choosing too many, they will give you a separate plate for your sides. -The drink isn't included in the price, unless you're talking kids meals. -You can make multiple trips back. -The salad bar is self serve. Another thing one of the regulars told me, was that the owners used to be Amish, but aren't anymore. Who knows, they might have their own reality show.
