We had high hopes based on Eagle Louisville's stellar Yelp score. But we walked away disappointed because of a major service lapse, curious food seasonings and discrepancies between menu descriptions and actual dishes. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Friday. We had a choice between sitting inside or being seated at a picnic table on the covered deck. We were assigned a high-top table in the dining area past the bar, where a few guys were watching a soccer match. The brine-soaked fried chicken is Eagle's specialty, so we ordered it. I thought the chicken was good,. So per the menu for the three-piece fried chicken meal, you can only order either all white meat or all dark meat. Interestingly, the two people at our table that ordered white meat still got a drumstick with their meat. The last I checked, drumsticks were considered dark meat. For an appetizer, we ordered the hush puppies. They had a nice crunchy texture but were very spicy hot. We also ordered the spoonbread. This was my favorite dish of the day. It was served warm, had a great texture and a light maple flavor. With our meals, we could get two sides. We requested the collard greens, green beans, fries, grits and mac & cheese. Only the mac & cheese was good. The collard greens were way salty and the green beans had odd and unexpected seasonings. Our dining companion was put out, and understandably so, that the menu said the grits came with white cheddar cheese. But instead, though the grits maybe had cheese, they were also loaded with loads of diced jalapeno. They were so over the top spicy, none of us could eat the grits. The fries were strongly seasoned with oregano. WTF? Our entrees came with biscuits. The biscuits were tasty, but unfortunately, because they contained too much shortening, fell apart when buttering them. And that leads up to the service lapse. After we received our check, our server completely disappeared. We waited a half hour for her to re-appear, gave up and asked another server to cash us out. He disappeared and we waited some more. Finally the red-headed server re-appeared and breezily explained she had been out on the deck the whole time. No apology or anything. read more

So several months ago I did a review on the other Eagle and how disappointed I was in the food. Tonight I went back to the original. I first came here because they had ballast point sculpin on tap. After they pulled back (ballast point) out of the east/mid west I was happy they replaced it with cigar city Jai Lai. Not sculpin but delicious as well. About 18 months ago maybe more they dropped Jai Lai and now they have 1 IPA on draft. The food was ok. Got the chicken sandwich. Lots of breading not lots of chicken. Didn't want the spicy mayo and asked for mustard, they don't have mustard. Who ever heard of a restaurant that doesn't have French's in a squeeze bottle. Bartender was nice and it's a great sized and pleasant environment just very disappointed in the ipa selection and the quality of the chicken vs the price. Friday evening and pretty sparse crowd. Love this place!! Visited on a weekday for lunch and were able to get seated right away. (Also lots of parking because it's at a mall). The staff was super friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is casual but super comfortable with a lot of natural light inside. We ordered a blackberry lemonade which was pretty good, not super strong blackberry flavor. The grilled cheese is amazing--such a great combination of sweet and savory and super cheesy. The dipping jam is the best part! The Mac and cheese is one of the best I've ever had. It's crunchy and has a good deep flavor. The chicken was pretty good--nothing crazy, but I expected it to be crispier. Collard greens were a good side to balance it a very carb-heavy meal. This was my 3rd time back at The Eagle since my first visit. Each time the food and service are great. This was a solo trip right when they opened at 4pm. I took advantage of the happy hour $5 shot of the day and $5 High Life chalice. That was a nice start to my evening and the beer was so refreshing in that big glass chalice on a hot day. I chose the meat and three which confused me because I thought it meant 3 sides. But I was only offered two. Maybe the 3 means 3 including the biscuit. At any rate, it was plenty of food. I opted for burnt ends, collards and mashed potatoes. The burnt ends were a little chewy to me but I haven't had them before so maybe they are supposed to be? Still very good and I ate it all. Next time I will ask for light bbq sauce. That's just a personal preference. The mashed potatoes were a generous portion of buttery, savory, creamy deliciousness. Delightful taste and texture. The drop biscuit was perfection. A light crisp on the outside, buttery and soft inside. The star for me at The Eagle is always the collards. They are so delicious! Tender, tart with just the right amount of vinegar and seasoning. Although it is a good sized portion, I could have eaten double they were so good. The service from the host and my server was great. Came for dinner at 5p on a Wednesday. Overall, we were pretty disappointed. Despite all of the outdoor tables being vacant, the host asked if we could sit next to another couple. I guess she could tell we were confused, because she then offered to clean and seat us at another table. We ordered a jalapeño margarita, buffalo chicken dip, hush puppies and chicken sandwich. We asked about the happy hour beer and our waitress said they were out of it. (Kinda surprised she didn't offer another suggestion). The marg was $12 and wasn't very tasty. The Buffalo chicken dip and hush puppies were both extremely spicy. My partner and I both enjoy spicy foods, but gosh I had to guzzle down water after every bite. Mid-day on Sunday we had some time to kill before our flight home to Vegas, so I searched the inter-web for a "local's lunch spot with exceptional southern comfort food near Louisville airport" and found The Eagle. We arrived around 2pm, there were a few parties ahead of us, which is a good indicator for great cuisine, considering it was after the typical lunch rush and there are numerous dining options on the block. We waited roughly 20 minutes for a table. Despite the busy dining room, our server was phenomenal - welcoming, knowledgeable, and attentive - her recommendations were excellent. First, the apricot martini is delightful, it was so good my sister and I ordered a second round. My daughter got the bourbon punch, which was huge and refreshing, then she ordered the apricot martini after tasting mine. Divine. The three of us shared an order of biscuits and they were the closest to my great grandmother's homemade biscuits I've ever had. My sister said they were the best she'd ever tasted (that's saying a lot since our great grandmother grew up in the early 1900s on the Oklahoma prairie making biscuits from scratch with buttermilk and lard, "the right way"). The accompanying preserves were delicious, not a morsel was left. As for the mains, we shared the mac & cheese as a side, 1/4 fried chicken, fried chicken sandwich, and fried chicken BLT. They were all fantastic. If I were forced to choose only one, I'd get the BLT - that rustic Italian bread, avocado relish, and jalapeño honey mayo atop their fried chicken are perfection. And, their mac & cheese is out of this world, just a hint of spice... I could eat it daily, I'd be fat but oooh soooo happy! We also sampled their spoon bread which was melty maple-butter cornbread skillet yumminess. By the time we got to it, we could barely eat any more. We still managed to put a respectable dent in it because "dessert stomach" is a real thing hehehe If I lived nearby, The Eagle would be a regular spot. We came here on a Thursday night for dinner. The waiter was nice and checked on us frequently. The bbq burnt ends were tragic. They were hard and overcooked, which is not how they're supposed to be so I feel sorry for the people that haven't tried Kansas City bbq burnt ends because Kansas City knows how it's supposed to go. Burnt ends are supposed to be tender and fall apart, not hard cooked like chicken nuggets. It was very disappointing. I don't recommend you order the burnt ends. The fried chicken is probably the best thing on the menu. It was well seasoned, well cooked, and served at the perfect temperature. The Mac n cheese was okay. I think it needed more seasoning or a different combination of seasoning and maybe a different milk used to cook it. The collard greens were great. As usual, we were debating over what to have for dinner and photos of the fried chicken solidified that this was the place to be. We probably should have made reservations, but appreciated the open seating at the bar. My hubby and I both got the quarter white fried chicken. He got the fries and I got the collard greens and coleslaw. The chicken was so juicy and tender. The seasoning was really good with a little bit of spicy. At first I was worried that I was gonna need some hot sauce, but it was just right. What took it over the top is the hot honey sauce that comes in the little syrup jar. I actually asked if they sold this in bottles for me to purchase. He let me know that they did not, but he put some in a to go container for me to have with the rest of my chicken. Where do I begin. We had a large group and our orders were promptly taken. Drinks were served in a mostly timely manner. However, it took over an hour for a single entree to brought to the table. We waited another 30 minutes or so for 5-6 others to receive their entrees. Another hour before the rest of the table to receive a dish but there were still missing dishes. Multiple times managers came to table to ask what was missing and were informed of missing orders. Other tables who arrived and ordered later could be observed receiving the same items we'd ordered. Other tables were seated, ordered and left while we waited for the second half of our table to be served. In the end most food was comped but there were still missing dishes. The waitress asked if would like these (hushpuppies and biscuits) to go and again waited another 30 minutes before being told that it would still take time for the food to be delivered. We ended up leaving without the to-go items. Deeply disappointed and will no longer recommend this establishment which had been a favorite of out of town visitors. It's a very casual spot--more like a bar--but it's well-known for its fried chicken, and it definitely lives up to the reputation. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, crispy, and incredibly juicy. The mac & cheese was creamy with a rich, noticeable cheese flavor. The hush puppies were moist and delicious, and the honey spoon bread is something people talk about for a reason--absolutely a must-try for any visitor. The service and ambiance were great as well. Staff were attentive, and the environment felt relaxed and comfortable. They also have TVs with closed captioning for watching sports, along with a wide variety of drinks and craft beers. AMAZING!!!! Hot honey on chicken?!?!?! Came in from San Diego wanting good chicken. Outside seating was great, great environment overall. Dakota, our server, was so nice. He helped us pick out our food. We got the half chicken, homemade biscuits, and green beans. Chicken was perfectly made, crispy on the outside and tender and moist on the inside. I have no words for the biscuits; soft, buttery and moist. Paired perfectly with the Jam and the butter. When paired, tastes like HEAVEN. Don't even get me started on the green beans. We were visiting during LDW, and we were in search of some fried chicken. We stumbled across The Eagle, and they had outdoor seating, which was necessary since we traveled with our dogs. There was a 10-15 wait, which was totally fine, and we were very grateful they had the outdoor seating somewhat covered. First strike.. was standing in the front awaiting someone to greet n seat us. After 20 minutes of waiting I walked over to the bar to ask questions about seating and was told there is only one person seating people and handling carry out orders too. Yet no resolution so we went to sit at the bar. 2nd strike.. another 15 mins at the bar and still nothing The lady at the bar finally noticed we were sitting there handed us two menus and that was that. As we are sitting at the bar I stopped a worker and asked about getting us a table. She tells me that there is only seating left up on the rail and that it had a tv to watch the games on. Once seated the tv screen was broken so it could not been seen. This kind of felt like we had bad seats at the game(if you get my drift). 3rd n last strike...The waitress that came to us smelt like a pack of Marlboro(cigarettes). Her first statement to us was "its my first day so I will TRY to give you great service"!...so let me give you the spill. Then began to talk about how the chicken was "brine" etc. I looked over the menu and it was much more alcohol than food items, $30+ whole chicken cost, bad service, smelly staff, and just overly bad vibes from the door. Went here with some friends while in town. Place had the football games on during Saturday night which was nice. Staff was amazingly attentive and super nice. We were in town for my bachelor party so the manager/host threw in a free app for the table which was greatly appreciated. The food was amazing. The chicken was crispy and had just enough zest. We love the food here, but every single time we come to pick up carry‑out, we end up standing at the front of the restaurant for 15-20 minutes with no staff anywhere in sight. The front is just completely unattended. After waiting, we've even walked up to the bar to try to get someone's attention, and the bartender will still ignore us instead of checking on the order. This isn't a one‑off -- it's happened every visit. And we tip 25% on carry‑out, which makes it even more frustrating that no one seems to be monitoring the front or taking responsibility for guests walking in. If someone came in wanting a table, needed to pick up a lost item or just had a question, they would be standing there just as long with no acknowledgment. On top of that, the carry‑out orders are often wrong or the quality is off. When picking up food turns into a half‑hour ordeal every single time, it becomes a real deterrent from coming back, even though the food itself can be great. At this point, it feels like a management issue more than a busy‑restaurant issue. No one expects picture perfect service on a carry-out order, but it's just a real indicator of how the restaurant is run. read more

I really like the eagle. I tend to order their chicken cutlets since I'm not a fan of bone in chicken. Everything I've had from here is delicious. Their greens are nice and vinegary which is a big plus to me. Chicken has never been dry and the breading is always crunchy. The cutlet is presliced as well. Which is nice, especially if you order carry out. I could bring it to a park to eat and not worry about making a mess trying to cut a chicken breast with plastic cutlery. read more

I honestly don't have any negative thing to say about any of the food we had because you can't go wrong with anything you order here. One thing that I would like to change is how loud the music can get. This might be because I get overstimulated easily, but we noticed the music gradually got louder the longer we stayed and couldn't really hear each other when talking.
