Have heard about this gem for 20 years but never tried it until last night. Wife and I sat at the bar - love the atmosphere: spacious dive bar with low ceilings and wood paneling. There are also picnic tables out front. You get a faint whiff of the grill/smoker upon entering. Kylie was our bartender and she was fabulous - knowledgeable, friendly, and answered all of our questions with patience. Wife ordered a mango margarita and doesn't like a lot of tequila, so Kylie went half and gave her a shot on the side in case she wanted to add more. It was wonderful. I had a couple of beers. We started with the fried mushrooms, which aren't what you would expect. It's two large portobellos cut into chunks, battered, fried, and served with sun-dried tomato mayo. They were great. I then ordered a duck taco, brisket taco, and a side of Grippo Fries with smoked mayo. I'd never tried duck but that taco was smack-a-lackin'. The brisket taco was also good, and the fries were fantastic - sweet and spicy, fresh cut, and crispy. Wife ordered a pork belly slider and truffle fries. She enjoyed the slider but didn't care for the fries - just not her thing. The portions here are large. A side of fries will feed three people. We took a hefty portion of them home, as well as some of the mushrooms. We could've sat there at the bar and spent 3 hours socializing and enjoying a smattering of cocktails - love the setting. Look forward to going back and trying one of the burgers at some point. read more

Well I'd classify this place as a dive bar in the sense of the word. It's definitely not 4 star noted and maybe not the best exclusive signage and overall 4 star appeal; but it a diamond in the rough, persa. This place is quaint, nice location (on a corner ) decent seating, not a big outdoor dining area, the bar is long and has the memories of the old day saloon. Now the food; terribly good! Menu isn't extensive but good items and variety that will satisfy anyone's appetite. It was Father's Day but as soon as it opened they were quickly filled with patrons and people kept coming; even waiting to get in. The fries in duck fat were awesome. Since so many baskets of fries like this for a long time. The smoked wings are great, meaty and savory. I had the pork belly tacos; my only disappointment was you only get 2 per order. The fine combination of ingredients were splendid and the pork belly so tender. My wife had the bbq pork sandwich on pretzel bun. Very good tasting and this was with no bbq sauce on it. If you're in the area, do yourself a a favor and stop in. I can't wait to go back ( as we live in southern Indiana) so might be a bit but definitely want to try a few other items. read more

As soon as I moved to the Louisville area and stated asking for restaurant recommendations, everyone would rave about Hammerheads. Hammerheads this, duck fat fries that. I was going to a UofL women's basketball game and I FINALLY was able to make it here. I went a little overboard on the food, but everything sounded so good! I really loved the pork belly slider and the duck tacos. Mac and cheese balls always slap. Then there are the famous duck fat fries. The portion is substantial, I was thrilled with that. Flavor wise they did not change my life like I was hoping they would. Still ate them all. The locale is super unassuming from the street, but inside it is really cool, divey, and broody. The staff was super sweet and helped me get in and out efficiently so I could make it to the game. I would have never found this place if it wasn't for a TikTok video, and I'm so glad I did! This restaurant is in a residential neighborhood and definitely has "hole in the wall vibes." We were there on a busy Friday night and had to wait for a table and awhile for the food but it was to be expected. It was an early Saturday evening, I called ahead to see if there was seating available and there was. We got there and were seated right away, service is slower here but the servers do a lot of different things so don't worry about service time. I got water to drink and my parents got a Diet Coke, water an a beer, they were hoping to have a Budweiser but settled for a PBR since it was an alternative. They didn't know you can ask for a taste of beers on tap & got them to try the lager and they liked that better. So got a pint of that. We ordered fried mushrooms for the table and those hand down were the best ones I have had in a while. The only thing would love that they would have a spicy ranch or horseradish sauce to go with it. I orders the roasted duck tacos, my parents got the potatoes salad, Mac & cheese, half rack of ribs and fish tacos and an order of garlic herb fries. The duck taco was delicious the jalapeño lime sauce was perfect addition. The ribs were my favorite, pulled apart and flavorful. I tried a bit of the Mac & cheese and potato salad and it was ok, we waited awhile for the fries but those were worth the wait! Like I said service is spotty but they did have a full house and it was to be expected. The staff was very nice and helpful and the food was good. Came here since I saw several recommendations as it being a local spot and a favorite. I was not disappointed! I decided to go with a couple of tacos, although depending on what you want, you could get sliders with the same ingredients instead. I went with one duck taco and one pork belly taco. I haven't had a great experience with duck in the past as I've tried it with different Asian dishes. This time, I figured why not try it if it's smoked meat, and the way it was described by one of the bartenders was that it smoked for several hours, rested, then cooked for an additional time for that special flavor. Man, they were not wrong. The duck was delicious. The pork belly was delicious. I would definitely try it again and other plates if given the chance. Tucked away this is a true hole in the wall, but you can't miss the huge hammerhead out front. We recently went here as a larger group of 7 and were seated immediately. It is an older home turned restaurant and very much a dive bar vibe. As a taller person the low ceilings were something to take caution of. Overall the menu had some interesting items you don't often see such as soft shell crab, venison and elk. It is all ala cart style so for an elk burger ($16) and a side of sweet potato fries ($5) it was a costly burger and fries. All in all I do recommend to try it out if you are looking for something different with a wide variety of beers and cocktails. read more

I love getting food from Hammerheads though I never go into the location to dine in, getting pick up from them is always easy and delicious. The staff is very nice and the the pick up is always very fast. I do wish they were a little more accessible though. The ambiance is just an average bar. Came here on possibly the last semi warm evening of the year. We had a large group (12 people), but they were able to seat us in about 30 min. We opted to sit outside because it was still nice out. We ended up taking 2 tables, one of kids and one of adults. We all got very good food. I got an elk burger and it was very good. My girls got ribs and at them all! My husband got the catfish sandwich and he liked it. My littlest got catfish, but she didn't like it. She said it was to greasy and it later hurt her stomach (probably because we don't tend to eat greasy food often). Overall, the food was good and we enjoyed ourselves. We will be back. read more

Late night Sunday dinner at one of my most-liked places to share a few appetizers and laughs with my pal over cocktails. Special seasonal cocktail featured is one of my favorites -- watermelon margarita with a salted rim. This went well with the ever tempting frontrunner of fries in duck fat and the mushrooms. I have to confess, I have yet to be able to get past these two items to get to the main menu because the apps are so spectacular. I keep returning with the intent to try a burger that another friend tells me to try. Someday soon, I'll do it. For now, I'm over the moon with the drinks and apps. Waitstaff and bartenders are all friendly and welcoming. Noise level is mild and easily able to have a conversation. Decor is funky and interesting. Went there with a couple boss's and my gf. The bosses were late but by about 15 minutes so we got a couple drinks. When the server asked and we said we were waiting in 2 more people his reaction was weird. Kind of like surprised and inconvenienced. It was 7:45 on a Thursday so about an hour before they closed. Boss's got there and requested their best Vodka drink the response from this server was "yeah, we really don't have one so I can't do that" kind of wild. He recovered by saying "I guess we could swap vodka into one of our drinks on the front..." didn't say what that was or what was in it other than that he'd be swapping vodka for the Mezcal. As we got our food, I guess the server was either the most attentive person in the world or, really wanted to push us to either drink or be gone. I know they close at 9pm but yeesh. 9:09pm the whole restaurant was packed up and we were the last ones out the door. Pretty weird experience. I don't think I'll be back. Also, the pretzel croissants are just croissants. The food was good, but not mind blowing. I understood this to be kinda dive-bar but with a great food, service, and busy. Turned out to be a bar that serves decent food with a weirdly off putting atmosphere. Had I not wanted to save face, I'd have left. Bartender that seated us was seemly pretty good though. Hammerheads is a dive bar in the basement of a house that makes some unique and rather unexpected (in a good way and tasty) menu items. It's an interesting spot that is worth a visit. On a whim we stopped in for an early-ish dinner and were not quite sure what to make of it. The look and feel screams dive bar but the menu is a mix of burgers, tacos, and ribs (with other items). Don't expect your usual bar food here because this offering is much more of a culinary experience than you'd imagine. We sampled a little bit of everything but the stand outs were the tacos and the fries! The different flavors for the fries are fun and the tacos, particularly the pork belly, were amazing. We also had some ribs but were not as impressed with the flavor (although A+ on upscale presentation!) This place is a nice example of not judging a book by its cover. Upon arriving and seeing that it is (literally) the basement of a house you might be inclined to turn around. Trust me that it's worth staying and exploring this culinary experiment. read more

Cons- Dirty/sticky menus, not sure where to go when you walk in, silverware/napkins served dirty. Maybe go here if you love food and aren't worried about cleanliness? The people were nice enough but our waiter disappeared at times and we didn't know how to get him so we could pay the check and go. Overall- 3 stars for good food but poor cleanliness.
