District 6 exceeded my expectations! My friends and I stopped in while it was pouring rain and asked if we could order takeout but stay inside until the rain let up. The staff couldn't have been more kind and accommodating. Even though it was takeout, the food was outstanding--freshly made, beautifully prepared, and packed with incredible flavor. It's rare these days to find such high-quality, upscale food at such a reasonable price. The excellent customer service made the experience even more memorable. I made a reservation for 5p Sunday for a group dinner and when I arrived early there was no one at the hostesses station but there were people sitting there waiting in a table when the restaurant didn't look that busy to me. I waited for about 6 minutes before the hostess showed up and I was seated. They were very accommodating about my party size changing last minute and seating me in a more comfortable spot until my party arrived. The food was amazing though. This is one of the more unique fried rice dishes I've had. It tastes wonderful, the savoriness and umami flavor comes as you'd expect for fried rice but the cheese, chorizo, bacon, and fried egg add a nice spin on it. It's like an American breakfast had a baby with latin and eastern cuisine. The crunch from the bacon is heavenly and the cheese, melted from being underneath the hot fried egg adds another layer of savoriness that some might find overpowering, make this feel like a cheat meal that gives great hugs. District 6 is one of my favorite places to visit in town. It's a bit small and seating can be a little cramped sometimes, but the food, service, and small neighborhood restaurant vibes are on point. We have lots of Vietnamese restaurants in Louisville. They range from the very authentic to the very watered down. Then there is District 6: a bright spot in the crowd. D6 has authentic items not available at other places: Thit Kho - pork belly and eggs stewed in caramel and fish sauce. Whole fish fried or steamed Awesome specials such as soft shell crab banh canh, lobster noodles...etc. These are all so delicious and always a wonderful surprise. But D6 also has the more trendy apps such as fried cauliflower and kale salad that can satisfy the other palates. And did I mention their prices are also very reasonable for this busy section of St. Matthews?? They even have lunch specials and Happy Hour. Oh, their drinks are very imaginative and festive, too. I ordered the Lunch Combination with gluten-free Chicken Pho (Pho Ga), with a gluten-free Traditional Summer Roll, and a Coke. For the Pho I requested no onion, no bean sprouts, no jalapeño, and extra Thai Basil and those instructions were followed to the T. For the gluten-free Traditional Summer Roll I requested no peanut sauce, and add Sweet Chili Sauce for dipping and those instructions were not followed. I was really looking forward to having the Sweet Chili Sauce for my summer roll. I know the restaurant received all my instructions because they were included on my receipt. The Pho Ga was disappointing, it lacked flavor. It honestly tasted like chicken broth from a grocery store carton. The chicken was tender which was refreshing, especially since I was disappointed about the broth. Pho is ALL ABOUT THE BROTH. I am an avid Pho lover, even make my own at home frequently, and this broth just didn't cut it for me. The gluten-free Traditional Summer Roll was tasty, with pork and shrimp. I would have enjoyed it more if I had received the requested Sweet Chili Sauce. The coke was delivered in a 16 ounce cup with lid, with more ice than coke and it was watered down. Great flavor, tender beef. And a generous serving. From there, things started to slide. My wife ordered chicken pho. I went with Pagoda noodles with shrimp. My wife's pho was a generous serving, served nice and hot. The chicken was sliced thin, very tender. But the broth was exceptionally weak. Very little flavor, less aroma. My pagoda noodles was also a letdown. I asked for the dish to be made spicy. It was served mild. I ended up using my wife's sriracha sauce to "liven" the dish. In fairness, the shrimp & noodles were perfect, just lacking full flavor. From my perspective, District 6 plays it a little too safe in the flavor department. My partner his mom and I went to District 6 ordered the seafood udon noodle soup and pho , the pho was fine a bit overpriced for what is was but all in all it was ok. However the seafood udon noodle soup just tasted like seafood and ocean water there wasn't that much flavor and the crab was battered it was a little wierd personally I don't like it . The staff were friendly and waitress was nice but the food wasn't for us . We also ordered the Thai tea , this Thai tea you could taste more of the green tea . I recently met a friend (omnivore w/shellfish allergy) at District 6 for lunch on a Saturday. Parking is tricky as the restaurant sits in a very busy location on Shelbyville Rd and doesn't have a dedicated parking lot. I snagged a space out front on the street (parallel parking) but my friend had to circle the neighborhood for about 10 minutes and finally found a spot on the street a 3 minute walk away. This isn't ideal. The interior is fairly industrial and the staff is quite attentive. District 6 offers a great lunch deal - a drink, appetizer, and lunch size entree for $14. We both decided to go with the lunch combo but I'd heard great things about the sweet & spicy cauliflower (not part of the lunch special) so we started with an order. Served in a bowl, swimming with tangy sauce, the cauliflower was spicy and crispy. I loved it but it proved to have a bit too much heat for my mild-mannered dining companion. If you like buffalo wings, the spice level is comparable and it's a delicious appetizer! I went with a refreshing iced green tea, the vegan summer roll (avocado and tofu) for my appetizer, and a modified pagoda noodles with veggies and tofu (no egg, no fish sauce) for my entree. The portion sizes were appropriate for lunchtime and great for the price! I enjoyed all my food and even had some noodles to take home (since I'd eaten most of the cauliflower). I'd definitely drop by again especially for the lunch special. I think stopping by later on a weekday afternoon in summer (when the high school down the street is out) would prove easier to find parking than 12:30 pm on a beautiful Saturday in May was for us. read more

I wanted to try the food here because they're very gluten free friendly (menu items are marked), and it was a pretty great experience! I got there a few minutes before my colleague, and the hostess seated me right away. The decor was very cute and fun, with colorful chairs and lantern hanging from the ceiling. The menus that were brought to the table were stained with a sauce that got on me, indicating they hadn't been wiped down. Mistakes happen. Our server was very friendly and attentive, along with the other staff who came out frequently to clear off dishes. Everyone was very kind and courteous. We got the Papaya Salad with Shrimp as our appetizer, and it was pretty good, but not quite as flavorful and authentic as Vietnamese or Thai papaya salads I've had outside of a restaurant. I got the Short Rib Pho and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! It tasted like it'd been cooking for a really long time, and I could taste all of the spices in the very tender beef. The portion was very generous and it was piping hot when they brought it out (just how I like it). The server was also kind enough to bring me gluten free hoisin sauce, jalapeños, sriracha, and chili oil, which made it even more delicious! I would definitely get this again. My friend orders takeout from here says she likes the friend chicken bao buns and spicy bacon fried rice, too. I was so happy we were able to be seated right away and the staff worked together to take care of us, some taking orders, others refilling drinks and more ensuring that we were happy with our selections. The pork belly bao buns were also wonderful but their price tag was extreme for only two, which will keep me from adding them next time. For entrees we both ordered the beef and meat ball pho. The broth was flavorful as well as the beef. The meatball was ... weird. Closer to the taste and texture of a hot dog or sausage. I'd settle for beef only if that's an option. Hey helpers, I'm back at it again so I was out with my son and we needed some lunch. And we had a couple of choices and we chose District 6. A great little place that's out-of-the-way on Shelbyville Road. Normally I would get that the Pho, but decided to try something different today so I had the Bo Ne fries and the spice fried chicken bow buns, which was like a mini open face Bahn Mi. This was just our starters and it was absolutely fabulous so I had a green tea and my son had a Sprite and we both have water and then onto our actual meal. He got the drunken beef which looked absolutely delightful and I got the special which was a green curry and it's spicy and delicious and just a bowl full of goodness And miss Hon was explaining that the green curry was a family recipe and I'm telling you it's worth a trip to come down here and try the food. Normally I'd be in here eating the beef noodle soup with my friend and she and I would split things and then I might get the fish the fried fish cause I haven't had the steam fish yet which is on my list, but our server is absolutely wonderful and this is a great go to place just for a simple lunch or a romantic getaway, kind of out-of-the-way and it's got a nice easy kind of Boho vibe. And I can tell that the cooks in the back put a lot of effort and energy into their food because every time I have come here the food has been absolutely amazing And I am so happy that we chose this place today. I adore District 6! It's always so cozy in this twinkly, colorful Vietnamese gastropub in St. Matthews proper. It's an intimate space best for 1-4. Think: small groups, first dates, dinner with a friend, or after work libations and apps. When I walk in I feel like I'm visiting my long lost Asian family kitchen, the staff - and particularly the owner - make sure you're taken care of and your meal is right. Those little attentive details in their service really make this place special. Menu fan favorites: - Short rib (aka 'dinosaur bone') pho, incredible on a cold night! This dish stands alone, and you'll probably be bringing home leftovers. - Crispy pan fried dumplings. It might have been beneficial that we arrived around 2pmish. One benefit is the menu special valid till 4pm. You get one mini appetizer and a choice on entree for only $14.00. Hubby ordered Mama's Mini and Red Curry. My choice was thr shrimp roll and Pagoda Noodles. Started off with the special, Lychee Mojito. Impressed that we were being serviced by the bartender. By the same token, it was a little perplexing since there were 2 other people that seemed to be working the floor. For having to juggle bartending and wait service, Donnabell did an awesome job. The portion of the appetizer seemed small, but in reality it's a perfect bite for the combo. My mojito had a perfect balance that if I didn't have the will power could have easily ordered 2 more. Hubby said his spring roll was ok but noticed my shrimp roll seemed larger. He said the balance of heat on the red curry was just right. He said it gives enough on heat without losing the flavor of the dish. My noodles was practically perfect. There were a couple of bites that kicked in a little more sweetness than preferred in a pad Thai dish. The portion size was perfect that filled me just enough to leave room fir dessert. For dessert, I went with the Ube Mango Sticky Rice. And never had I ever done a happy dance on a dessert till now. The portion is more than enough for two. Thus, I have leftovers (big grin). Whoever designed this place did a great job in their though process. From the mirrors on the wall to give the larger room illusion, the map that highlights District 6 (which explains their name), to the little flower bix window near the kitchen. This place had been on my bookmark list for some time and now will remain on the favorites list. Military discount applies to one service member per ticket and it's an impressive one. For those who follow me know 5 stars is hard to come by me on reviews. Just know that I am somewhat partial due to my preference on Asian flavors.
