I recommend getting a crispy chicken sandwich or, pro tip: ask for a side of Mac and cheese with chicken on the side. The fries are deliciously thin and well seasoned. I was planning a Bourbon Trail/roadtrip to Cincinnati getaway and started with our first destination: Louisville. By the time I got to Cincinnati planning, I realized this place is actually FROM Cincinnati. It ended up working out though because our eating schedule up there was completely packed without trying to throw this into the mix. I made a rez for a Tuesday evening and it didn't seem like it was needed but it certainly was crowded. I know they have, supposedly, really good fried chicken but I'm a vegetarian so the main reason I wanted to come here was to sample Louisville's famous spoon bread. Our server was awesome, very nice and a pleasure to interact with during this meal. They have an interesting cocktail menu with a southern flair, bourbon certainly well represented. I can't remember what I was eyeing but GF ordered the highly recommended maple old fashioned which brought me back to when I had one of those at Poogan's Porch in Charleston. Look at me name dropping restaurants lmao. The maple old fashioned at this place is a little more mature than the one they serve at Poogan's, which is pretty much sweet tea. This was a little too bourbony for my taste and didn't enjoy it. GF, with a more sophisticated palate, liked hers and had no trouble taking over mine. The blackberry lemonade, with bourbon instead of the standard vodka, was more my speed. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and was served in a GIGANTIC glass. This is a great choice if you are a child like I am. I didn't have high hopes for many vegetarian options but I was extremely pleasantly surprised. The kale salad really appealed to me with apples, bourbon soaked raisins, cornbread croutons, sharp cheddar, and cider vinaigrette. It was fantastic, a really wonderful assortment of flavors and textures. GF ordered the 1/4 chicken which she reports was good, nice and juicy. We also ordered the white cheddar grits, horseradish mashed potatoes, and of course, the spoon bread. The grits were so flavorful with a nice kick of heat. The spoon bread was so good! It was sweeter than I was expecting but served as a nice little dessert. When asked about the mashed potatoes (have chicken gravy so I abstained), GF says "better than sex". My wife did some research and wanted her first meal in Louisville to be fried chicken. This restaurant is away from downtown, in a charming residential neighborhood. The ambience is cool and rustic, with great attention to details. The service is very fast and the manager checked on us twice. We ordered quarter chicken, dark meat. The fried chicken is lightly spiced, served with honey, very good and confusing at the same time for my California palate. The shrimp with grits is a total winner, with buttery smooth grits and spicy Cajun gravy. I loved the picked green beans as well. I just love all the surprising southern pickles. This is one of our go to's for special occasions. Went here for an 18th bday dinner. The chicken with hot honey is fantastic. We always get spoonbread, and Mac n cheese. We tried the horseradish mashed potatoes this time which was good. Very little horseradish to detect which was a downside to me. The hosts always do a good job of acknowledging special occasions when they check you in but that communication never gets relayed to the server as it's not mentioned or celebrated at the table. The chicken was flavorful however it did not come out piping, hot and fresh. It tasted like it had been kept in a warm warmer and from our table right next to the kitchen with the doors constantly open, I could see the warmer very clearly. Even the side dishes were just warm and not piping hot. I let my guard down when we were seated. The hostess tried to seat us right by the front door with the outside temperature of 22° not a good idea so we moved in unbeknownst to me. We were stuck right next to the kitchen doors instead of up in the back where it was assuredly warmer and less hustle and bustle constantly walking past you all lessons to be learned, but as far as the food goes, they need to pay a little more attention to freshness of their food there's nothing worse than chicken that is not piping hot. Best fried chicken I've ever eaten! Lives up to the ratings! Had the bone in chicken as well as the chicken BLT sandwich and both were great. The upside surprise were the best hush puppies I've ever eaten. The wire cheddar grits and the horseradish mashed potatoes were both great. The mac n cheese was too creamy for my taste (hard to believe that is possible but I guess you can add too much cream and overdo it). Had the bourbon punch thing which was huge and tasted amazing. I arrived by myself and was seated promptly. A gentleman at the host stand greeted me and introduced himself as one of the owners. It did take a bit before someone came to take my order, and the host who was at the entrance with the owner came to my table to apologize for the wait and took the order himself. I ordered a cocktail and a grilled chicken sandwich with no bread with sides of collard greens and succotash. My drink and food was served promptly along with my 2nd cocktail. The chicken sandwich was a very thin piece of meat when ordered with no bread. Still it was cooked well and tender enough. It was well seasoned and the sauce was absolutely delicious. The sides... yum! Those collards were as tender as any I've ever had and nicely tart. But the succotash was the star. It was so delicious and filling. Corn, edamame, green beans, bacon and other goodies. So well seasoned. I loved it and the portions were large. Each side came with its own spoon so maybe they were meant to be shared? I couldn't finish them but tried! The owner asked me how things were as I was leaving and i was praising the succotash when I got the heartbreaking news that my first time trying it would be my last time as they are taking it off the menu. Our first visit. This is a small chain with locations in several major cities around the eastern US. There are two in Louisville and another in Cincinnati. I was apprehensive about my salad when it first arrived to the table. Once I dug into it, it actually flowed pretty well. The green beans, pecans, quality lettuce, corn, and black beans were delicious. I ditched their lemon ranch dressing for my own. It was still a little pricey for the quantity, but it had character and thought put into it. Everything was super high quality. If I ever went back, I'd certainly order the fried chicken the wife ordered. And the spicey chicken dip would be a must as well. But dam that sauce with the hush puppies was great too!!! All the condiments and sauces were delicious with their own unique tastes that fit the dishes they were served with. Eating at the Eagle has been on my radar a long time! Great location, great vibe, and DELICIOUS LEMONADE!! We started with the hushpuppies - lovely texture, but just a bit too spicy for my liking. Spoon bread, mashed potato's/gravy, slaw and 1/4 dark was on our order. Spoon bread was heaven - lovely maple butter on top. Mashed potato's and gravy were so tasty and creamy. These were like sitting back at my grandmas dinner table. Slaw - was vinegar and celery seed heavy and not my fav. I was looking for something a bit creamier and sweeter. Chicken - the flavor of this chicken meat is why the eagle is #1 in the chicken race in Louisville. The brine must be made of gold - sooooo good. Overall I'd say the eagle is definitely pretty good, but at the same time seems a bit over hyped in my opinion when seeing different lists and hearing things from others locally. The interior is very nicely decorated with wood everywhere and they have a great outdoor patio space. Definitely worth getting a reservation depending on when you go as it's a popular spot and has that Louisville institution status. Our service has been good overall, not the best but attentive enough. First time I've seen a draft root beer on tap and daaaang it's absolutely delicous! I'll for sure be getting that again when I'm not feeling an alcoholic beverage. The chicken sandwich was good but not the best I've ever had either. I do looove the fries though, perfectly crispy and the dipping sauce is very tasty as well. Now....The mac & cheese has been pretty bad every time we get it in the sense that it came out either luke warm or cold (Also for the other guy I ate with). The first time we even asked for them to heat it up and wasn't much better so ended up taking it home both times and heating it up later to eat. I just don't see how that happens when it comes out in a cast iron pan lol. That's the only true issue I've had with the food. Next time I'll try the bone-in chicken and maybe the hushpuppies or biscuits...
