I'm coming out of yelp retirement to praise this place for it's no-nonsense, great approach to sushi. The decor is nothing special. Who cares. The sushi is great. The taisho absolutely knows what he's doing. Half the sushi bars in KY can't even do normal hosomaki. Not only do I not have to ask for the nori to be the right way around here, I get perfectly tight rolls that aren't going anywhere when I dip it in the shoyu. The quality of fish is great, quite comparable to a decent kaitenzushi in kichijoji or even meguro. Obviously the selection won't be as diverse as Japan, but the usual stuff is all here, cut well, and fresh tasting. My standard order includes sake (salmon), hotate (scallop), hamachi (yellow tail tuna), negitoro or equivalent (a minced tuna), unagi (often a whole donburi because I f#$@ing love it!). Then based on what was excellent from that bunch, I'll order a 2nd time. My wife loves ika (squid). Taisho whipped out the blow torch for my unagi and even seared her ika with it. Most places just toss it in the microwave. TYVM, taisho. On top of all that, this place doesn't break the bank. They do need to brew their tea stronger though. Mata ne. read more

My partner and I were visiting from out of town for a weekend and decided to try this place as we love sushi, and it didn't disappoint. It's a family-owned restaurant (it appeared that the parents were cooking and running the joint while the older kids assisted as servers) in an old Wendy's. As others have mentioned, the decor (or lack therof) is minimal, but we didn't mind. It kind of gave a "hole in the wall" vibe, but all the reviews had us hopeful for some delicious sushi. We both ordered sides of miso soup and side salads. They were both typical for what we've ordered at other sushi restaurants. I ordered a California roll and a cooked salmon roll, and my partner ordered an eel roll which he said was pretty good, and a mango shrimp roll that he said was okay. All of the rolls were made from fresh ingredients, and rolled very tightly. You could see the sushi chef making everything fresh to order at the counter. We decided to try the tempura ice cream for dessert, expecting something small, but it was huge!! And delicious. What truly floored me was that all of this food- 2 salads, 2 miso soups, 4 rolls, and dessert, was around $30! That's unheard of in 2025. It's hard to believe that an obviously old Wendy's can offer up great sushi in the middle of farming country, but they do. My brothers and I ate here based on a recommendation from our cousin and we enjoyed it very much. Me and my partner come here all the time. While the decoration might seem a bit underthought, and the bar itself looks a bit messy, it lends itself to the character found within the business. We've been patronizing this place for nearly 3 years, and in all that time we have seen the interactions between the family members who own and operate the business. Little places like this, that are kept and maintained by people who share love and joy not with just each other but with the food they make, are the reason small towns always contain hidden gems. We're usually waited on by a young man who we assume is the owner's son. He's always friendly, as is the woman we assume to be his mother. The food itself isn't exactly traditional sushi, and has localized elements to it, but it's good for the crowd they tend to receive. My partner and I have tried crab rangoon from all over, and we can say with certainty that Sushi Bar makea the absolute best ones. It has a perfect ratio of cream cheese to crab, and it is fried to perfection. It might be easy to pass by this little place when you're headed through Madison, but if you're in the mood for good food and the oppurtunity to support a local business, this place is something special. read more

We were on our way to Clifty Falls for the day and was checking Yelp for a place with good reviews and lots of stars. So glad we stopped in. My husband ordered the 2 rolls special that came with soup or salad. He picked the spicy crab and a California roll and salad. I ordered the bento box with chicken teriyaki, fried rice and a shrimp tempura roll. It also came with miso soup and a salad. The only thing I didn't like was all of the onions under my chicken breast. I am not an onion eater. So I could have done without them. But everything else was great. And the food was beautiful! Since you eat with your eyes first, just look at the pictures. You will be hungry for sushi. If we are back in Madison Indiana we will go back. Great food nice staff and reasonably priced. My son and I eat a lot of sushi. I've had the pleasure of eating sushi from an Iron Chef and the horror of eating sushi from a Chinese buffet. This was pretty OK. I'd give 4 stars to the food quality but 2 stars for the service speed. We had four orders of nigiri eel (), a rainbow roll (), a Red dragon (), & dragon (). In general, the sushi rice was a little too strong flavor and a little firm, the tobiko was terrrrrible, and the fish was pretty flat; however, the eel might have been in the top 5 I've had. We tried several of the sushi selections and it is about as good as what you can get in Indianapolis and had a lot of good flavors. They had a very large selection to choose from. My new favorite sushi place in town!! Went for the first time last night for dinner and were all very satisfied. Even though it was a Friday night, the restaurant was empty other than one other couple...maybe because the restaurant just recently opened? Our waitress was attentive and friendly. We tried some of the more basic rolls: the blackened tuna roll, spicy asparagus roll, shitake mushroom roll, salmon skin roll, sweet potato roll, spicy tuna roll, and the philly roll. The sweet potato and spicy rolls didn't have sauce over them, so we asked for the sauce on the side and our waitress was really nice about it. The restaurant is run by a family and although it may not look the greatest from the outside, the food is hands down my favorite place in all of Madison to get sushi. Just wow! Sushi Bar is incredible. Its super disappointing to see empty tables all over but the upside is getting a seat is no problem. The chef is incredible. Definitely top of my list for sushi bars and this place is up against some tough competition from San Diego to Palm Desert. Small rice portions underneath generous fish pieces.
