    Mapo Tofu lunch portion
    Daniel B.

Red and Blue is a lot of things. Walk in the door, and off to your right is a sushi bar. To your left is a room full of tables with built in burners. There's a take out counter right in front that does brisk business. Past the hostess stand is a small dining room. Beyond the dining room is a cocktail bar. Off the cocktail bar is a private karaoke room. And all the way in the back is a banquet hall. Egads! What is one supposed to make of all this? Personally, I think it's important to try and figure out what a restaurant does best, and what separates it from the pack. In this case it's the Sichuan food. The fact that Red and Blue even had Sichuan food was only revealed to me one night when I was with a large party in the karaoke room. We started at the bar, and then continued the party in our private stall. It was a ton of fun, but if you go to the bar, my recommendation is to stick to bottled beer. Beyond a group sing along of Sweet Caroline, the highlight of that evening was the braised fish filet in roast chili soup (麻辣香水鱼). Man, that was good. And it made me want to come back for me. However, it took some time. Just this week, I returned for lunch to try a staple Sichuan dish I've been enjoying all over town: mapo tofu. And this was definitely a solid version, with number peppercorns, ground pork, and enough heat to make me sweat. For my tastes, it leaned too heavily on the black pepper, but that's only a small nit. The lunch portion was $7 and it comes with rice and either salad or miso soup. Miso soup felt like the wrong starter for Sichuan food. And a salad in March sounded like a recipe for disaster. But I went with the salad and it was surprisingly good. One of these days I would like to return with a group and try some more of the menu. That would also give me a chance to experience the banquet room in the back. Then I'll have done everything but the sushi bar and those front tables with the burners. I'm still not quite sure what those are about, but perhaps I'll figure it out in time. The sushi on the other hand, I'm happy to leave a mystery.

I stopped in for a weekend lunch at the small, quiet 5-seat sushi bar (photo), located as a small part of this restaurant's several eating/drinking areas. The area was relatively brightly lighted, with limited decor, and thankfully no television. The other end of the bar was the extremely busy hostess / takeout / delivery station which seemed to account for at least half of the business during my visit. As I glanced over the menu, I smirked as I found "American Chinese" as a menu heading for the staples found in most other Chinese restaurant, before I ordered soup, a couple of maki and a handful of nigiri. The sushi chef and the servers were quick and polite, and I was presented with a pleasant enough soup. The chef also presented me with an amuse bouche of a thinly sliced hamachi and jalapeno with a pepper marinade (photo) - appealing enough to the eye, but unfortunately, the marinade completely overwhelmed the taste of the fresh fish. The main was plated with a few small decorations carved from carrots. The rest of the plating could have been a bit more exact. The rice was lightly seasoned, and the maki was not bad, though I found the not-spicy salmon to be mostly "crunch" and much more finely minced than I prefer. For the nigiri, the saba could have used a better presentation, as it appeared to fall apart on the plate, and the ikura could have been a bit fresher, as it did not have the little "pop" when biting into very fresh salmon roe. I believe that the tamago tasted as if it was frozen and then thawed - that may have accounted for the delay and additional plate (photo). The restaurant seems to be busy enough that they could easily cook eggs every day. But overall, despite these minor irritations, I enjoyed my meal, and will probably stop by again soon. 2019 04 06. LOVE THIS RESTAURANT. One of the most authentic Chinese food restaurants in The Capital Region. We had our baby showery here August 2017 and all family/friends loved the food (Generally Americans). HIGHLY recommend. This place is a hit with UAlbany international Chinese students. Ordered general tso chicken take out. $11.50

The food is a bit below average and the waitress seemed to get unpleasant when I didn't want to order more food. Not cool

Nice and authentic Sichuan Chinese food. I got the stewed beef noodle soup and it was a large bowl of noodles, broth with hot oil, beef with all the sinewy parts that I like and bok choy. Noodle was on the overcooked side, but the beef was soft and tender with good chew and flavor. Also tried salt and pepper squid... tender pieces fried with hot peppers. Water spinach with garlic, not on the menu but recommended by the server when she told us they didn't have asparagus with bamboo that we originally wanted. It was a surprise for me that they had this... water spinach stir-fried with garlic is one of my favorite vegetable dishes and not easily found around here. She mentioned that she grew it herself! The other dish we got was lamb with szechuan sauce. Intense flavor with hot pepper pieces and nicely seasoned. Many other very interesting dishes that I have to come back and try. It's going to be hard to stop back here because originally we were going somewhere else nearby but they were closed on sundays that's why we were here instead. Still, got to make it a point to stop back. Service was very good. Yelp check in got us a 10% off of our bill.

I had the Szechwan dry hot pot with beef and pork. So tasty. Interesting spice combinations. Friendly prompt service. I had a nice booth next to a window.

So my girlfriend and I decided to check this place out. We live close to Red and Blue, and both have recently developed an insatiable desire to consume sushi and human flesh on a regular basis. Just kidding, we don't consume human flash, because it is not nearly as tasty as sushi. We have been to a lot of sushi places here in the Capital District and have had mixed results across the board, but Red and Blue is great. We read the other reviews here, including some of the negative ones, and have found a lot of the negative reviews to be unfounded. The sushi rolls are tasty. If you are tired of going to sushi places that use more rice than fish, this is your place. The presentation is elegant and appealing. I got the Tuna and Salmon rolls and they were both very tasty. The place was very clean. The staff was friendly and responsive. The prices were reasonable. We look forward to returning again next week!

I am a sushi addict and always try to find good places in the capital region. Red and blue did not disappoint. Have I had better, yes but with the groupon deal I had to try this place out. Roles were fresh and pretty big! I ordered the Magic, amazing tuna and New York roll. All three were big and tasted great. I do go during lunch so I ordered a lunch chicken dish as well. The hot special chicken was pretty salty and fried (which I didn't know or I wouldn't of ordered). I was looking for a spicy chicken in sauce and instead was a fried dish. Although that wasn't the best, I still give this place 4 stars based on the sushi, cleanliness and portions of the food. Definitely would go back for more sushi!

But if you're looking for something milder, they're great at that, too. I think the large menu has been updated since my last visit. The first few pages include dishes that I would describe as "soul food." There's frog, beef tripe and pork intestine-- you get the picture. I never really got into that. On this visit, my friend and I picked Stir Fried Spicy Squid, Crispy Chicken with Crunchy Red Pepper and Bok Choy with Garlic. We were hungry. The veggies came out of the kitchen almost immediately. Crazy fast. We were grateful. The other two dishes took a bit more time. When you see all of the ingredients in those dishes and how finely sliced they are, it's no wonder. I loved the chicken dish. The chicken was a little crunchy but the red peppers were super crunchy. It was a bit spicy but deliciously so. I liked the peanuts and what looked like slivers of jalapeño peppers, too. The squid was also great. Here, I think they used more jalapeño peppers and spices. There was more heat to this dish but it was deceptive. The more I ate, the more I could gradually feel the burn. By the time we were full, I could feel my face starting to sweat a little. That was fun. The restaurant is clean and attractive with a remarkable amount of seating. The back portion is reserved for hot pots which I have yet to try there. The staff is friendly, helpful and bilingual. They will make suggestions if you'd like. This restaurant generally gets a bit noisy because it's where large Chinese families gather when they want to go on the town. That's a good thing. There's also a large screen tv that plays cooking shows. With so much going on, the customers seemed pretty happy.

It felt brutal as the wind pierced through my coat. Winter still had us in its icy grip even if the calendar said that Spring was only days away. I was alone and I was happy to take refuge in the warm restaurant with its welcoming decor. There are pretty Chinese lamps at each booth as you enter. In the back, the large round tables were filled with families who appeared to be throwing a party. The server told me I could sit wherever I'd like. I chose the first booth. I was only too happy to come in from the cold and sit. Oh, the bowl of soup that I ordered turned out to be a dream come true! It wasn't just any soup. It was the Wonton Noodle soup lunch special at Shining Rainbow on Central Ave. in Albany. The menu is in both English and Chinese. After looking at the description, I thought I had an option to add some meat to the soup. So I asked for some roast pork. After I placed the order, a young man from the kitchen staff actually came out to ask me what kind of noodles I wanted in my soup: skinny, medium or wide. He spoke to me in Chinese. I must have really confused the staff because a second staffer also followed him out and he asked me exactly the same question in English. I was really surprised. I said to them in (Mandarin) Chinese, " Don't you usually use the thin noodles for this soup? I'll take what's easiest for you to prepare." So I realized later--after they'd gone--that I didn't actually answer their questions. I must have added to their confusion but they were so very nice and polite. About 10 minutes later, a server returns with a huge steaming bowl of soup. I'm still so cold and when I see the steam rising in the distance from the soup bowl, I'm smiling. He places the soup in front of me. It's a thing of beauty. It also had vegetables that I didn't ask for, but that's not a bad thing. I took one look into the bowl and expressed my shock, "Wow. It's huge." The server looked satisfied and walked away. Underneath the roast pork and bright green veggies, there were thin noodles swimming in soup. It smelled divine. But there were no wontons. Should I say something? No. Because this meal looked perfect. Despite the confusion that I might have contributed to-- I wound up with what I really needed--a delicious and healthy hot meal. I almost finished it, too. The servers packed the rest up for me. When the bill came, I wondered what it would be. The lunch specials which are offered Monday- Saturday are just over $10. Almost $11. Sure enough, that's what they charged me. I gave them a large tip. I think $5 or $6. They were just so nice. Perhaps I looked so cold and pitiful. Whatever the reason, it was an awesome meal that didn't break the bank and I hope I can order it again sometime with or without wontons.

Don't let the wrappers get cold & tear! Decor is simple, clean and the restaurant staff is quick & family friendly.

TV news broadcast dire predictions during every 24 hour news cycle. So of course, cooking and acquiring food while binging movies and TV shows on cable became the obvious means by which to deflect attention from the rising COVID body counts world-wide and dire predictions. High anxiety was the order of the day, and tippling, cooking, take outs and eating became a reliable means to blunt it. Between TV binging we continued our years long, fanatical search for Xiao Long Bao -- or anything Asian to cook of takeaway and eat TV-side. HU's is a small Chinese joint in Albany, near where we received our Covid vaccines, and a good 90 minute drive from our home. There was nothing that vaguely resembled a good Shanghainese take out joint any closer - so when we didn't care to cook Asian, we made the trip to Albany for takeaway. As it turns out, HU's makes some authentic and delicious soup dumplings, and other dim sum like shrimp har gow, perfectly seasoned sweet/sour soup and some very tasty Scallion pancakes and Peking style duck. It was well worth the 3 hour round trip to take away -- or even eat in. The restaurant enforced social distancing making the eat in experience feel safe and authentic. I dunno. It's been a while since our HU's excursions in 2021, but I think in hindsight the food is truly a solid 4 stars good. I can't get to 5 stars because I could not rate the service due to pandemic restrictions in restaurants. Service was diminished due to social distancing during Covid times - but the restaurant was sparkly clean everywhere we looked. I imagine the same is still true today. So if you find yourself craving Shanghainese when in Albany, NY - HU's is a solid choice. The fact that their food selection and quality was high during the worst pandemic in the last 100 years speaks volumes about HU's food cred. Top tip: Even though the dumpling skins are bit on the thick side, stick with XLB and dim sum. They are NY Chinatown worthy. The usual Cantonese dishes like egg foo young, chow fun and ribs are serviceable too.
