    Omelette home fries and toast

Ask any local where are the best diners in the area and I'm sure Duncan's will be on the list. It seems like it's a staple in the area and definitely has a home town vibe. When you first walk in there's a long bar style table that you can sit and eat, there's also a small dining area with checkered tablecloths. I think the thing they are most known for are the donuts and the cinnamon rolls. Which I can see why, the glazed donuts are amazing! If you order there they will even grill it for you! To me the glaze has a citrus flavor, but so so good. Toast does not seem homemade to me. Good sized portions. Always had great service, nothing really to complain about. This is a solid diner style place, nothing fancy but good solid food.

That's steam coming off the perfect poached egg. That's how hot it was delivered to the table, atop a half order of homemade CBH w/ toast.

Finally! This is a timely review, because you only have until tomorrow to make it to Duncan's... or wait until 2019. I'm going to be counting down until February 28, in the hopes that I'll finally be able to try one of their glazed donuts. Today, on my maiden voyage, I fell in love with the place. At a few minutes before nine in the morning, I was lucky to snag the last parking space. And when I walked in, I was fortunate to be able to snag a seat at the counter overlooking the flattop grill. There is no way you can watch this kitchen in action and not fall in love. Mostly, I was transfixed by the omelette station. And having watched the cook bang out over a dozen of these things, I want to come back with a posse and order one. While they aren't meant to feed a family of four, they could easily do so. And even though they are cooked on the flattop instead of a proper omelette pan, these aren't your typical rolled diner omelets. It's more like they are stacked. Which I realize doesn't make much sense, but it's a mesmerizing process to watch. The spinach one looked particularly appealing. On the flip side, you can also go small, and I appreciate that more than words can say. This morning I was able to get breakfast on a very human scale. It was a half order of the homemade corned beef hash, one poached egg, an order of Duncan's homemade toast, and a cup of coffee. The corned beef was delicious, but the onions still had a bit of a crunch, and I would have loved a little more crust on the whole thing. But those are small nits. The poached egg was perfect. More importantly I was able to finish--and enjoy--the whole thing without feeling gross. Watching the fellow on the poached egg station was inspiring. As was the other guy who manned a smaller flattop dedicated to scrambled and fried eggs. While I typically avoid diner scrambled eggs, having seen these, I might be tempted to give them a shot. Home fries were cooking down in a large cast iron skillet of their own. And the kitchen counters were just crammed with house made baked goods. There are tables tucked around the corner, for a proper sit down breakfast. But I may just find myself looking for excuses next year to head up Hoosick Road and pop in for a donut and a cup of coffee at the counter.

If you're looking for an old school diner feel this is your place!! It's cozy and has a small town feel. The walls are decorated with antiques and the diner counter is huge! We chose a table as we had 2 small children with us. The glazed donut of course caught my husband's eye. It was AMAZING! We one grilled and one regular. I honestly don't know which way I prefer it. The grilled one was obviously crunchier with a light buttery flavor. So yummy! I had the Hangover, which is a bacon, egg & cheese between 2 pancakes & a side of hash browns. It was all delicious. I love the sweet flavor the pancakes had. I am not the biggest fan of hash browns to begin with, but these had so much flavor and crunch they were hard to resist. I highly recommend trying Duncan's out for a family breakfast or a coffee and a donut at the counter!

This place is ALWAYS busy. We tried going once at 8:30 and there wasn't even a place to park. The 2nd time we tried, we went at 7:30 and there was plenty of parking so GET THERE EARLY! Food was delicious-I ordered scrambled eggs (which I never do) and they were so fluffy. I can't rate this place a 5 because my entire outfit smelled like it was deep fried. I had to wash everything I was wearing when I got home because the smell just never left.

Breakfast in the middle of the day? French fries with breakfast? It's all possible here!

Since that, it went downhill. The server took our drink and food order. Then we watched for 20 minutes as people that came in multiple parties after us got their food and we had nothing. Then she brought 3 out of 4 meals. My girlfriend ordered the special Raspberry Nutella French Toast. It came with strawberries and we were told, "we're out of raspberries so we substituted strawberries." That is total BS. How about telling us you are out of raspberries and asking if we want something else. My girlfriend can't really eat strawberries since they make her break out. Even worse is I STILL didn't have my food. Server said, "yours is coming, but I didn't want these to get cold." After the rest of my party was halfway done with their breakfast and I still didn't have mine, I asked for a manager. I was told there is no manager there...another load of BS. Server came back and I told her I didn't want my food at this point. She said, "okay, I'll just bring the bill." Are you f'ing kidding me??? You expect us to pay for this crap?? Needless to say, I will NEVER be back to this $hithole. Service is horrible and they will not let you complain to a manager. No manager is there on a busy weekend day? I find that hard to believe. Stay away from this place if you actually want to eat a meal and not just watch everyone around you eat. If you do decide to go, make sure not to sit in Tara's section.

If you own a tv, you've probably seen the commercials featuring the family behind this family-owned business. I did try to go to Alexis years ago. I believe it was on a Sunday morning. There were literally no spaces left in the parking lot so I decided to pass. There are best times to visit. I showed up on a Thursday evening just before 5:30pm. The hostess greeted me and told me that the rush hadn't begun yet. About 7 tables and booths were already filled. That would have kept some businesses plenty busy but Alexis is a big place. It can seat so many more. The parking lot was less than half full. It's clean and bright. A big classic Greek diner. The wait staff and hostesses are friendly and efficient. A server was headed towards me to take my order when my iPhone suddenly rang. She immediately backed away and she returned as soon as the call ended. She was so observant. The menu is massive. If I have a bone to pick it would be over some of the pricing. I love open turkey sandwiches with gravy but it looked as though they were charging more than $17. It would have to be an out-of-this-world turkey sandwich for me to go there. Instead, I ordered a Monte Cristo for about $14. I'd never had that before. Ham, turkey and melted cheese between two slices of French toast. The sides included Cole slaw and a choice of fries or salads. I went with a green salad. It was already a high calorie meal. I asked for their house-made Greek dressing on the side which was awesome. I liked my sandwich a lot, too. I could only finish half, so I took the rest home. As with many diners, there's a big glass display case for desserts. The cakes and pies look amazing. Perhaps someday I can find if they taste as good as they look. But that's for another time. I was so full. Thanks, Alexis.

Working man's Watervliet gem! The kind of place, like Ralph's in Colonie, where the locals eat but don't tell you about because they want to keep it to themselves. Stuck in a Time Warp in the nicest way possible. Red glitter Formica and retro photos of Watervliet history abound. A simple unassuming 24-hour diner on the railroad tracks where everything could go right. And does. For starters, there really is a "Bob" and family waitstaff, warmly welcoming you to their humble establishment. Want your bacon crispy? I always describe mine as "if you dropped it it would shatter". The owner assured me she has a "burn it" button for customers of my ilk. My experience is breakfast for lunch, twice. But, like your typical diner, they have just about everything, anytime. Did she say pierogies? Be still my Polish/Ukrainian heart! But I digress, as I am wont to do. Go ahead. Park your car in the adjacent parking lot and tell me you can't envision Guy Fieri pulling up in his Camaro convertible doing the same.

I will say a while ago they changed their menus. I used to enjoy the older version with some information about the presidents of the United States. Probably silly of me but I enjoyed reading that and it went along with the '76 name. I'd like to see something similar to that come back on future menus. It's a large place, so there's rarely much of a wait, if any, and the parking lot is big enough that finding a spot is never an issue. I ordered the Big Breakfast ($13.49) comprised of two pancakes (instead of one French toast), two eggs, and bacon (instead of either sausage or ham). That's quite reasonable since we paid $9.99 ten years ago. I did opt to add an order of home fries on this visit for an additional 35 cents. My wife decided to have a Create Your Own Omelet ($10.99) with cheddar cheese and spinach (plus an additional 35 cents for that second item in the omelet), served with home fries and toast. Bottomless cup of coffee is $3.99. The pancakes were large and very light and fluffy considering how thick they were. I would have liked them to have been served hotter, which, coincidentally, is what my wife also said about her omelet. But the pancakes were tasty and satisfying. The hashbrowns were a good mix of some soft and some crispy potatoes. The over easy eggs I ordered came out perfect and the bacon was crispy the way I like it. Overall, a pleasant meal that we didn't have to cook at home. Our server was very welcoming and friendly.
