The ladies working were super sweet and attentive. The food was incredible, 10/10. The pancakes were so big and fluffy. Definitely give this place a try, even if you order take-out!

My family and I had a very good experience here. My parents ordered two different kinds of Eggs Benedict (crab cakes and smoked salmon) and enjoyed them. I loved the French toast in particular. The Bloody Marys were tasty and I loved the variety of options (dill pickle, garlic lovers, spicy, etc.) It was very busy and I recommend getting there as early as possible. The only thing I disliked was that the music was so loud, which is really not the vibe I'm looking for at 8am. I would return.

The Breakfast Spot was a bit of a disappointment after reading the hyped reviews and seeing the long wait for togo orders. This spot has the feel of a classic diner, where you can sit at the counter and watch the cook prepare your food. However I was expecting the food and menu to have more of a unique twist and flavor profile, but instead, I found the food to be prepared with minimal seasoning or added flavor. This simplicity may be appealing to others but I think there needs to be some extra sauce or special ingredient to make the dishes something I couldn't replicate at home. On a side note, the only water they offer is bottled. This took away from the home-y feel of a diner.

Last time I was here I enjoyed it. This time sat at counter for service, until I didn't want to sit and wait any longer. I had to get to work and I guess they didn't want to serve customers. When I was here last I ordered a breakfast sandwich to go with spicy sausage which was good.

Fried whiting, 2 eggs over medium and grits with cheese

Yelp helped me find this place. I was going to go somewhere else (a food truck) but that was closed... so I checked Yelp and saw this was nearby and rated well. It did not disappoint. I got the breakfast with 2 eggs (I asked for over medium) with grits and whiting (fried). Pretty much what I expected because I've seen pictures on Yelp and other diners in the place ordering something similar. The whiting was expertly fried and not greasy, with a nice crunch and savory flavor. Grits were good but I am not by any means an expert judge on that. Interesting menu, not like what you would normally see around here (ie. fried whiting for breakfast). It was enjoyable sitting at the counter watching the cook and other staff work their magic and they have a system that works well. Sitting at the counter wasn't all that comfortable for me, I am not much for sitting on a stool. Coffee came in a to-go cup. Fixings for the coffee was on a table behind you, with half and half, flavored creamers on ice, and Splenda, Equal, and sugar. Parking wasn't great as this is downtown street parking with meters. Staff were friendly. Definitely looks like a neighborhood place. They were pretty busy even at 10:30am on a friday. I would come back and trying some other stuff on the menu.

Oh wow. That was exactly the thought that went through my head when I first bit into a piece of the fried whiting that came on my plate with eggs over easy and cheese grits. Wow. Man, this stuff is good. Now some of you may be scratching your heads at the notion of fried fish with cheese grits and eggs. And I have to admit that this was a brand new combination to me as well. The only reason that I found this place was because my even-more-in-the-know friend Celina was gracious enough to invite me out to breakfast. I looked at the menu, and then I asked her what she was getting. Then I ordered the exact same thing. Because when you have a foodie friend who you trust, and they bring you someplace special, you get what they get. We sat at the far end of the counter, where we could see the magic being worked on the flattop grill. Celina also knows the cook. His name is Pierre. And to watch him make french toast and scramble eggs is mesmerizing. This man has serious skills. However, The Breakfast Spot is a neighborhood place. And it's not a fancy neighborhood. And it's not a big place. So come with your expectations in check. That said, I'm looking forward to getting back. As soon as I can. With or without Celina. Possibly on my own. And while part of me want to try a few other things, I've been thinking about that fried whiting for weeks. Although I also heard good things about the fried shrimp, with eggs and grits. Should you go and try the whiting--and you absolutely should--have a bite on its own. But after that first bite, don't hesitate to bring the hot sauce into play. Because this food was made for that. And when you do have that first bite of whiting, you can thank Celina for letting us in on the secret.

As I waited for the hostess she was clearly overwhelmed and couldn't eek out a smile to any of the people she greeted. In the lively restaurant, a few tables of girls-night out, birthday dinners, couples both young & old, bar seating with the World Cup on TV. Our server was very pleasant. The food was good, by Albany standards, heavy on the butter, salt and cream. It wasn't bad but for me they could pull back on the richness and let the herbs/mushrooms/fish/etc shine through. 2 out of the 3 us intentionally only ate half our portions, planning to eat the rest "tomorrow" and told the server we wanted to box them togo. She offered to do that for us, while we were happily chatting, sipping the rest of our wine. When the boxes didn't reappear, the server apologized that someone threw the boxes away. It was disappointing, especially when we paid $25-28 dollars for our plates of pasta. Based on the overworked hostess and server, management needs to adjust their staffing to insure a better customer experience. When they toss out leftovers, not just a single bite, but huge plate of food, it would seem appropriate to provide a "peace offering" perhaps put a small dessert togo or certificate for a free appetizer on a future visit. If I was local I'd probably return.

The restaurant was really spacious and had lots of natural light which provided a lovely ambiance. They offer lattes and and espresso drinks as well. We placed our order and the server delivered it to our table. We tried "The Vegan" which is a buckwheat batter crepe stuffed with seitan, vegan pesto, vegan cheese, spinach, roasted squash, and caramelized onions. We shared an order of crispy and perfectly seasoned homefries. I ordered a sweet crepe from the special menu which was a buckwheat crepe filled with a blueberry compote, semisweet chocolate morsels, and toasted coconut with candied pecans. It was so rich but so good. We loved the atmosphere, the friendly staff, and the numerous plant-based options and ability to convert several menu items into vegan dishes. We will definitely be back and since we have told so many friends about our experience, will will not be coming back alone!

This was my second time here--my first visit was dining in with friends, and this time I ordered takeout. Both experiences were consistently impressive. Known for its Ethiopian dishes and outstanding vegan cuisine, Umana Yana brings African culture to life through its vibrant décor, flavorful food, and thoughtfully crafted drinks. Every detail reflects passion and authenticity. It's no surprise that actress Tabitha Brown made a stop in Albany to experience the restaurant's highly praised vegan offerings. That's a testament to the reputation they've built. For my meal, I ordered the jerk lamb lollipops, jollof rice, and slaw. The lamb was tender, juicy, and packed with just the right amount of jerk seasoning. The jollof rice was rich, well-seasoned, and full of flavor, while the slaw added a fresh, crisp balance to the meal. On my previous visit, I tried the wings and waffles, and they were equally delicious. Two visits, two different meals, and not a single disappointment. Whether you're a longtime fan of African cuisine or looking to try something new, Umana Yana offers an experience that's just as memorable as the food itself. If you don't know, now you know.
