I finally got to try the famous Snowman, a Troy staple since the 1950s! I sampled a couple of their flavors, and they were fantastic--offering all the classic choices. I went with the Coffee Oreo on a cone, and it was delicious--creamy, smooth, and satisfying. I love that they offer various ways to enjoy your ice cream, from mixing and matching flavors to dipping and topping. They even have a scoop and a half option! The BEST ice cream spot in the capital region. My husband and I wait every March for them to open so we can make our almost daily visits after dinner. Their soft serve ice cream never disappoints and is always the best dessert, especially on a hot summer night. My favorite flavors are the coffee and peanut soft serve flavors. Made it to the Snowman a few times this year and my favorite flavors this year hands down were their soft coffee ice cream and their hard peanut butter chocolate. The soft coffee had such a great coffee flavor! The only mistake I made is I ordered a small. The servings are so big that I can't finish a small. I need to order a baby cone! The last time I went I finally brought home an ice cream pie! I chose the peanut butter chocolate pie. For obvious reasons. We tried the heavenly Kahlua and coconut, the creamsicle to die for (vanilla n orange sherbet), and the thick Kahlua and salted caramel Boston shake (shake topped with sundae -- What else would you ask for? LOL) I am serious -- you need to taste all of them. Nothing negative to say about this old time creamery. On a hot August day, this is just a perfect dipping spot. While back home in the Capital Region, I did a mini ice cream tour of all of the popular ice cream joints....Martha's near LG, Kurver Kreme, On the Farm and a horrible cremee place in Vermont. I went to Testo's for lunch (yum!) with a few others and suggested stopping at Snowman on the way back, as we don't often get over to the 'burgh. I had not had ice cream here in probably 10 years. It was a weekday afternoon, so it was pretty quiet. We parked about half a block up on a nearby street. At first glance I thought some of the prices were a tad high, but OMG, the portions are GENEROUS! I often go for a twist cone, but had the Oreo ice cream here, which is somewhat similar to a Cookies n cream. Amazing and flavorful! My dining companion had a sundae that was quite sizable, it was also delicious. Total for the cone and sundae was about $6.50. Not too bad! After my visit, I did a google search on Snowman and discovered it's been around for 60+ years! So, we were in the area and had a hankering for ice cream. Upon arriving, we discovered that they only do "call in advance ordering" for drive through only. I had heard rumors of this in the past but my better half told me she was a picture online of a line of people. But sadly, the call in thing is the new reality. After hearing the nice woman explain the process, we squinted on my wife's smart phone to find what we want and ordered two cones. Pick-up was 45 minutes away, so we sat in the parking lot and waited for our time. During that time, we observed at least two dozen cars drive up and get the same instructions. It led to lots of disappointment. I guess that is how it goes, but who thinks to order ice cream up to an hour in advance? Also, every couple of minutes they would run out the next batch of ice cream orders to the pick-up in brown bags. Very mysterious. Finally, we were able to get our ice cream. We both picked the flavor chocolate cherry Amaretto, and it was fantastic. For full disclosure, my favorite ice cream flavor is spumoni (chocolate/cherry/pistachio) and this was nearly identical to that except for the green color. YUM! It was worth the wait, though we couldn't get served it served in cones because they would break in the bag. So, we were given empty cones and had to spoon it in ourselves with the plastic spoon they gave us. I guess this is how the Covid-19 world eats ice cream. The experience wasn't enjoyable at all (call in advance, wait, no cones, hard to read menu) but the ice cream made it all better. read more

HO-LY COW. I am forever indebted to Katie that works at Dinosaur BBQ for recommending Snowman. We finished our late lunch and had intended to go to the Dutch Udder but they weren't open yet - so we asked her where we should go and she said I KNOW they're open! It took a ride around the block to find parking. The two lines were almost into the road, and this is mid-March and 43 degrees with wind. I can't imagine what it's like during the summer!! I'll commend the staff on moving the line quickly, and the patrons all being patient and friendly. Unfortunately notable - we visited during the height (I hope) of the COVID-19 thing and these folks cleaned the counters probably every third person. Much appreciated! The portions are enormous! I got a scoop of coconut and a scoop of coffee Oreo, while my husband got a 3 scoop sundae - BIG mistake, literally, but put us back less than $15! Our friends got a sundae and a Boston shake - nobody was able to finish their ice cream! I sampled a few of their more unique flavors - unfortunately did not write them all down - but I found the portion size pretty good for the money, texture was pretty good overall (maybe stored a bit too cold, but not icy), decent flavor variety with some interesting choices. Unfortunately, I'm always going to be comparing them to Dutch Udder since I'm not a local, so if I've already driven 3 hours to Troy, I'm going to the best ice cream in town. But there are other technicolor ice creams in production, that feel like they betray the promise and potential of homemade ice cream. Your best bet is to ask for a taste before you commit to an order of anything, because... The servings are huge. Seriously, the small is more than enough for any full grown adult. It's a lot of ice cream, and it's not a lot of money. And should you get a good flavor, that's a lot of pleasure for just a couple of bucks. If you are feeling decadent, remember these two words: Boston Shake. It's a sundae on top of a milkshake, and it's fantastic. This is a hand dipped and spun shake made from hard ice cream. It's the only way. But think carefully about what flavor shake compliments the sundae floating on top. Because the shake does this wonderful thing where it freezes onto the ice cream that's scooped on top. So a vanilla shake with a butter pecan sundae will encrust this fantastic nutty ice cream with a layer of frozen vanilla goodness. Damn. That sounds good. Actually, even better would be to get it as a vanilla malt. Snowman has finally added some umbrellas to the picnic tables, and the shade is a welcome addition. You know, because it's summer. What an amazingly cool place. Snowman is a family owned ice cream business, around since the 1950's. They are located smack in the middle of a mixed use neighborhood of apartment buildings, a saloon, and a BBQ joint. This place has character, that's for sure. Their website boasts that they "produce all of the premium hard ice cream, yogurts, and sherbets we serve to you on premises daily". How cool is that? We ordered three cones: Peanut Butter Cup, Chocolate Chip, and Chocolate Frozen Yogurt. Oddly, they don't sell the traditional sugar cones but do offer a cake cone and a waffle cone.
