Because I love getting soft served in October, I checked Facebook before committing to a post-brunch trip over here today, and was pleasantly surprised to see the Curry Freeze social team hard at work, as they recently made a post giving us coneheads the inside scoop about their final countdown: 10/24 people. That's the last day of the 2019 season (until then open daily, 11am - 9pm). With vanilla/pumpkin prominently displayed on the shrinking the menu board (but really, what other flavors do you need in October?), my order was a no brainer. I got a small twist on a cone (because I'm sustainable AF), and it only took one lick before started to feel like a true pump king. Or a hallow queen. Either way, it was the perfect treat for a mild mid-October day! In a sense, soft serve is really just melted ice cream, and Curry Freeze delivers on both flavor and texture. What could be a perfect storm of recipe, equipment, and TLC yields a twist that's exceptionally creamy (my mother claims it's the best vanilla soft serve around), and everything you want in the frozen purgatory that is soft serve ice cream. Whether you visit on a 90º or 60º day, the twist never compromises its integrity: it stands tall, is structurally sound, and stays thicc. I mean, is this soft serve #goals or what?! Completely inspiring. We might not deserve this summer-fall hybrid dessert, but what a time to be alive. The fact that even some of the best soft serve in the 518 has the opportunity to be basic and get it's pumpkin spice on is a win-win, so stop being seedy and get your harvest dessert on! read more

A really solid place for ice cream! Definitely one of those classic places to go to in the summer with easy parking and shaded picnic tables. They have many different place options for hard and soft serve ice cream and sundaes. The workers at the window were really efficient and nice. We went there tonight and the service was terrible. The icecream was tasteless and the portions were small compared to other icecream places. One small twist and a cup of chocolate soft icecream was $10.00. Anywere else we have gone and gotten the same order was at the least, 4 dollars cheaper and it tasted much better. We used to take our kids there a lot not anymore. Id rather drive a little further to get better service and better quality icecream. This place has definitely gone downhill. The soft serve is pretty good and the prices are about what you'd expect - maybe a little high. The problem I have is that they have a $10 minimum to use a credit card. I ordered one ice cream for $8, but they wouldn't sell it to me because I only had credit cards. Not a great business decision for modern times when people use digital wallets and cards and rarely carry cash. We have tried quite a few of the local soft serve spots, but this one remains my favorite. Because I am now reviewing it in consideration of other spots too, I am bumping it up to five stars. My favorite thing about this spot is the chocolate dipped waffle cones with rainbow sprinkles. The cones are fresh, the dip extends a generous extent. It's straight up yum. Other places have waffle cones, but not with with chocolate dip or addition of rainbow sprinkles. They can't compete due to that alone because the waffle cone is such a complement to my go to ice cream choice, the soft serve twist. As for the ice cream, that's tasty too. The service is pretty quick, even with a long line, and it's friendly. There are also five picnic tables to sit at where you can enjoy your cone. And, everything is always clean. I stopped by curry freeze with my daughter for an ice cream on a hot day. I wasn't surprised to find the prices had increased since prices have gone up everywhere. What surprised me was, that for the increased price I received a much smaller cone. Literally, the cone itself was closer to the size of the toddler cones you buy in the store than a regular size that all other places offer. This means a smaller diameter ice cream and less cone to fill for an adult small. My daughters child size was very small, closer to a glob of ice cream on top of a tiny cone, not even close to being enough for her. To top it all off since my order was under $10, I could not use a credit card so I had to buy another item I didn't even need just to qualify to pay for my disappointing cones. There's plenty of other places in schenectady & rotterdam for ice cream that don't skimp to the point of leaving you feeling ripped off. read more

Been going here since I was a little tyke! But I must say some of their specialty flavors are the bomb. The Mexican chocolate was one of the beat I've had. Today I tried their coffee ice cream and it was delicious. A true coffee flavor. I get a junior cone and that is enough for me, but I think I might need to start making a daily visit. Featuring mostly original mostly home-brewed hard and soft serve flavors, including such nice things as being able to get a twist of something other than chocolate and vanilla in the soft serve. The lines can back up a little during peak hours, and there's only five tables (one big) in the outdoor area, and your scenic view is of a dry cleaner across Curry Rd. Super disappointed. Ordered a malted chocolate shake. Received a black and white shake with a hint of malt. One thing I can't stand is when vanilla ice cream is used in a chocolate shake. Completely ruined it for me. I ended up throwing this 5$ shake out and went to Stewart's and got it made right. Stopped in with the nephew for a treat and oh my goodness they now have GRAPE Italian Ice!! Have you ever tried Indian ice cream? It's delicious. And even though I know that this ice cream stand gets its name from its address, I always smile at the thought that perhaps I could get a kulfi soft serve. Speaking of soft-serve, I've been on a mission lately trying our region's finest vanilla-chocolate twists. In that regard, this place is a bit lacking. Everyone uses the word "creamy" to describe their favorite soft serve, and I wish they would stop, because it's not a very helpful term. All ice cream is creamy. What the best soft serve shops seem to produce is a swirl with a marked density about it. The cup I ordered here, was softer and looser than I would have preferred, and it looked like on a hot day it would be a puddle in mere moments. That said, it's ice cream. And it's not bad. Especially if it's the one that's closest to you, and the one your family has been going to for decades. Then you must go here for the memories. But the soft-serve is not worth a trip. read more

We ordered a cake here for our son's birthday, which happens to be on the 4th of July. There is an order form on the Curry Freeze website. We chose the traditional vanilla and chocolate ice cream. If you order over the phone, you can choose any flavor. The cake consists of a thin layer of yellow cake, a layer of chocolate ice cream, a layer of hot fudge, a layer of cookie crumbles, a layer of hot fudge, a layer of vanilla ice cream, and frosting on the cake. I went to Curry Freeze the other day after work on a warm day and I was craving ice cream. I had heard about it from people and passed by a number of times, but had never stopped before. I guess I got there at an off time, as there was absolutely no line. I had a hard time deciding what to order. They had a whole list of homemade hard ice creams that sounded great, but I was a little more in the mood for soft serve. I ended up ordering a medium twist cone with chocolate sprinkles. I didn't expect the medium to be so big!! Wow! And it tasted great. The service was also great. The girl who took my order at the window was very nice and friendly. After more than a year of being deprived of soft-serve ice cream, I was struck by craving I couldn't ignore. Luckily, Curry Freeze is down the street a bit and around the corner. Huge selection of flavors - hard ice cream, frozen yogurt, soft-serve, soft serve w/ "flavor-blast" (stripes of flavor along the outside edge), italian ices, sundaes, floats... But I was on a mission, so soft-serve it was. I got a small lemon-strawberry twist in a cup, and my guy got a small pistachio soft-serve on a cone. The portions seemed generous for a small (yay!) and cost less than $5 total. Both were rich and creamy without any of the ice-crystal clumps soft-serve ice creams can sometimes get. For some reason my brain had difficulty reconciling "lemon" and "ice cream," but the flavor combination was unique and kinda reminded me of a super creamy strawberry lemonade. The pistachio wasn't bad, very subtle flavor. I honestly find nothing wrong with this place - and the prices sure can't be beat - but for now it will be an "a-ok" instead of a "yay!" until I can get a better sampling of the other goodies (especially that italian ice). Well, let's start first with the ice cream. The ice cream is actually pretty decent, that's without a doubt. What you get is worth the price, it's not the best, but it's good. However, the service is usually miserably slow. A maximum of 10 customers between 2 windows (and 3 people working those 2 windows) should not take 15 - 20 minutes to serve. At one window, who I can assume to be the manager, was talking to a group of customers for 10minutes before serving them, while a line of 8+ formed behind that group. I am a big fan of small local businesses, and grew up in a town of family owned ice cream stands. For this reason I love trying them but am also a tough critic. I am pleased to say Curry Freeze passes the test. I've been here when it's empty as well as night that they are slammed to the road. They never waiver in either situation and the wait always seems reasonable. They have some great selections and good custom options. They are willing to accommodate any reasonable request like the time I wanted just a taste of a peanut butter sundae but didn't want to eat the big one. I have soft ice cream from many places throughout the city but always come back to Curry Freeze. Recently I started eating a low carb diet so my says of soft ice cream were over or so I thought. I can maintain low carb with Only 8. I always get a junior and it satisfies my craving for ice cream but that is not the reason for this review. My reason is the homemade ice cream cakes! I have had occasions to order cakes for friends and they have always been able to customize the cake, one friend has celiac, so they were able to eliminate the cookie crumble and cake which made her day! Last week I ordered a cake for a gender reveal for a co-worker and they went above and beyond with this cake. Apparently, I was the first one to ever order an ice cream cake for a gender reveal. The owner stepped up and tossed out a few ideas and I left it in his hands. When I went to pick up the cake he told me what he had done and explained that how he did it. I was happy with his explanation and was so excited to get back and have her cut into it. Once I was back at work we let it thaw for a bit then turned over the knife to her for the reveal. She made the first cut and when the slice was removed there was the BLUE layer that was added. We were all excited as this made baby boy #5! The cake was excellent as usual but what made it more special was the phone call I received 2 days later! The owner took the time to call me and ask how everything went and if the cake was okay the way he made it. Talk about customer service!! I L-O-V-E Curry Freeze. When I first came here I thought it was the establishment featured in "A Place Beyond the Pines," and I was upset that I had no baby or Ryan Gosling look-alike to re-enact baby's first soft-serve (I would be Eva Mendes, obviously). But then I found out the scene was not, in fact, at Curry Freeze. My mild disappointment soon turned to pure happiness when I ordered my ice cream. The people working at Curry Freeze are some of the friendliest ice cream workers I've come across, and they even let me use their bathroom (a rarity in the world of ice cream stands). I got the Piece of Cake ice cream (Cake ice cream with pieces of cake in it and the Muddy Shoes (White Chocolate ice cream with chocolate covered peanuts) in a waffle cone. I'm a frozen yogurt kinda girl. My favorite? Pistachio in a waffle cone from Kurver. Upon being taken to Curry Freeze, I saw they too offered Pistachio froyo, so I had to try it. Long story short: Kurver is still my favorite, hands down. Curry Freeze must keep their sift serve machines way too cold, because the yogurt was icy and so cold it freezer burned my taste buds. The pistachio flavor wasn't strong enough, and just tasted kind of sickly sweet. I thought maybe the waffle cone could redeem Curry Freeze, but that too was subpar. Curry Freeze waffle cones have a faint citrus taste to them that I personally found very off putting. Needless to say, I probably won't be making any special trips to Rotterdam to come back to Curry Freeze. read more
