Guptill's Roller Skating Rink in Cohoes holds the title as the world's largest indoor rink of its kind. It recently celebrated its 75th anniversary. I still haven't set foot in the rink. But I did finally stop by for some of the famous desserts/ ice cream. Service was great. The young man at the service window made a number of very helpful suggestions, especially after I mentioned that I've begun to show a bit of dairy sensitivity if I have ice cream late at night. So I tried the nondairy Dole pineapple whip in a cup. It was delicious. My friend had a double scoop of chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. That was delicious, too. I tried some. There were many customers. Since Guptill's is widely considered a Capital Region institution, I'm slightly embarrassed that I haven't visited before. The ice cream stand is large and clean. The staff is young and courteous. I can't explain why I haven't been to the rink yet since I skate pretty well. Perhaps I've just been busy. Still, this was a good start. Hopefully, I will get around to doing some roller skating in the coming weeks. It might be a good way to beat the heat since Guptill's is air conditioned during the summer. read more

BEWARE! CASH ONLY! Not the best thing to find out when you walk up to the window to order. I did not do my Yelp due diligence before I went as I usually do. It is posted but in really small print. So $8.75 for a regular sized chocolate milkshake later...yikes! The shake was no better than Stewarts gas station shakes and twice the price. Now here I wouldn't come back to. Guptill's is not the closest ice cream parlor to me, but I'd certainly go out of my way to stop in for some. It's a reason to drive on US 9 instead of I-87, for example. I'm really impressed by the large number of flavors of both hard and soft ice cream. Members of my family prefer Guptill's because gluten-free cones are available. The quality and texture of their hard ice creams are always consistently good. They are one of my favorite places to get strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Guptill's is an Albany staple and I am woefully late to the party. Hubs took me to Guptill's to celebrate National Wife Appreciation Day. I was admittedly overwhelmed by the several flavors to choose from and skeptical that a place with that many flavors could deliver on quality. My fears were quickly quelled with some birthday cake ice cream in a large cone. Hubs went with black cherry. We loved our ice creams - well worth the 14 dollars total. It's a good thing I don't live closer to Guptill's because I would be here all the time! They have a long list of homemade ice cream flavors and I believe the list changes slightly year to year. I have tried a few flavors, and have been impressed by them all. I usually get a pint to bring home and it was around $7 a pint as of summer 2024. Not cheap but it's good quality freshly made ice cream and worth the price. There is a huge parking lot and good number of benches. Staff is friendly and efficient. When in a new town the first thing I do is local for a local ice cream spot, and luckily Guptill's was still open and wasn't closed for the season. The amount of flavors that were offered of both soft serve and hard ice creams seemed endless, so while although I really enjoyed the Chocolate Cake Twist soft serve, I really want to go back and try out their different options. I really liked how you could drive up, place your order at one of the several counters, and be served almost immediately. If I have an ice cream craving, I have a lot of options around me but my go to would be Guptills. They have a lot options for flavors. I believe they carry close to 70 flavors. This place could get busy but they do have a lot of kiosks open that makes the service a little faster. My go to just switched from the banana split to their award winning brownie fudge sundae. They have a large parking lot and most of them would be hanging out there eating their ice cream. Only thing they are missing would be a large screen with a movie streaming to make it a drive in ice cream theater. A family owned business for over 50 years and a regular finalist in the Times Union's Best of the Capital Region contest. Do I need to continue further? Yes I do....as the first time I was there, I had no cash on me and had to go back home. All I carried is a credit card and a license.....and now...just my phone. Guptill's Ice Cream is one of the most popular ice cream spots in the entire Capital Region, but I have to say it's a bit overrated. With that being said, Guptill's has tons of flavors and different options, but it is overpriced and nothing special. To amplify, I ordered a medium soft serve vanilla ice cream cone and it cost $5. Now, the biggest problem was that I could barely eat it. The ice cream was huge and they put way too much ice cream on the cone. It was pouring over the cone and it was an absolute mess. Also, they didn't give me a dish to put the cone in so most of the ice cream fell on me and the ground. Be that as it may, the taste of the ice cream was pretty good. The ice cream was creamy, rich, and didn't have too much of an artificial taste. In addition, the cone was crunchy, but definitely pre packaged. In the long run, Guptill's has enjoyable ice cream, but it's expensive and nothing spectacular. read more

I always have the small sugar cone vanilla soft serve, which might sound boring considering all the options they have, but it's perfect. Even when you order a small cone, the amount, in my opinion, is more than enough. I what to go back to try their cider donut sundae. They have social distance labels, so you wait at a correct distance; once you get to the counter, someone will take and prepare your order, a different person charges you. Even when you order a cone, they will hand you a cup with your order, so there is no direct contact while giving you your order. I love the review here that said anything other than a 5 star review is a fib. It is 100% correct as well, not only is the service always great, but there is a sense of community as well that is so rare. How many establishments does the owner walk around and mingle with the customers and parents? Or have the same experienced staff every year to help the kids feel safe and able to skate without judgement? To top it all off the ice cream is awesome and even when it's absolutely packed the lines always move fast since there are like 6 windows to order from. When you have a pack of hot and hungry kids this is very helpful. I don't know; seems like a no-brainer for me. All I know is my daughter loves this place and we will continue to skate here and have an absolute blast doing so...Anyone that was around from the 80s to early 2000s remembers how big skating was a part of our lives and it beats sitting at home on a device any day!! I'm a big softie. I came here to chill out for some birthday ice cream last week after wingin' it at the Rusty Nail for the birthday wing promo. Surprisingly, it was my first visit to Guptill's for ice cream this summer, but don't worry, I got my soft serve on at plenty of other joints. The birthday boy opted for a coupla scoops of hard ice cream (scoop, there it is), but since soft serve season is quickly winding down for us here in Upstate NY, I just had to go for a waffle cone of swirl. FWIW, the best soft serve ice cream combo I've ever had has been a banana/chocolate twist; I might say I scream for it ;) I've only found that perfect flavor pair at CDI in Clifton Park, and my beloved Jumpin' Jacks. If I could dunk that bad boy in a peanut butter dip, I might die and go to heaven. I mention this fantasy flavor, because it's now a combo I look to create every. time. I'm out for ice cream. Following my craving, I chose a FlavorBurst soft serve banana, paired it with a chocolate dip in a waffle cone, and whew! I nailed it. I think the banana might have been a tad too sweet for me, but the chocolate dip brought that cone back to reality so fast, it was a perfect blend of nanas and choco. Very a-peel-ing ;) The waffle cones here are on point, and they have so many order windows, even if the crowd loitering around said order windows seems overwhelming, the Guptill's crew knows how to keep things moving. So unless you think getting ice cream on your birthday in lieu of cake is bananas, be a softie and head over to Guptill's, even if it's not your birthday. read more

Maybe I did it wrong. There are people who I know who love this place. And without a doubt, it's one of the more popular ice cream stands in the Capital Region. As far as I can tell, soft serve is the order of the day, so that's what I got. I've been to lots of different soft serve places over the years, so I am keenly aware of the subtle differences. I am also pretty sensitive to imitation vanilla flavoring. Of course, I'm also a prisoner of hope, and try vanilla soft serve wherever I go. This one didn't do it for me. And personally, I'm not into elaborate sundaes. Plus, when I want hard ice cream, what I'm really looking for is something made by the establishment. The service is quick and friendly. The seating area was clean. And frankly, I like this soft serve better than some of the other places I've been around the area. One of the most beloved institutions for soft serve is one of my least favorites. Fortunately, this area is rich in ice cream parlors, seasonal stands, and restaurants where you can get your cold creamy fix. Everyone will have their favorites. Guptill's is the definition of a cash cow. They have 8 windows open for the hurd of happy customers they serve every summer night. They deserve an A plus for service. They have lots of servers aimed to please and you rarely wait for your ice cream. There is no doubt that this is a favorite of people in the area. Here is the thing. Their soft serve is average at best. They have lots of flavors you would never expect. Like peanut butter or chocolate mint. They can add a swirl to your soft serve too. The problem is that the ice cream is weak. It is cold and creamy but the flavor is lacking. Not chocolate enough. Not vanilla enough. Plenty of flavors (hard and soft) to choose from! Prices start at $2.50 (small ice cream cone) up to $6.75 (banana split). Dips, sprinkles, candies, & additional sundae toppings are extra ($0.50-$0.75 each). They even have fat-free hot fudge!! You order and pay at the outside takeout windows and there's picnic table seating in front and along the side of the building. There's also a strategically place water fountain near the takeout windows to wash down the sweetness or rinse the sticky mess off your hands. I stopped here on a hot and sunny day and ordered a Large Cherry Dip Twist Cone ($3.50). The cone was very HUGE and the rich & creamy ice cream was dripping fast through the hard cherry shell onto my hands. I ended up asking for a cup, which was gladly provided to me with extra napkins. The service here was friendly and good. LOCATION: 2.5 miles north of the Latham Circle on US Route 9, attached to the Guptill Arena.
