Pirates Junk ice cream covered with Heath Bar Ice Cream
    John R.

Starting our summertime ice cream crawl off with a bang. Ended up at this wonderful ice cream shop, with a mini golf course. Mia and Meghan in the ice cream shop were extremely helpful and helped us pick out some wonderful choices. They gave us taste tests, as many as we wanted. I settled on salty dog, and topped it with pistachio. My wife chose Pirates junk and heath bar. Great pairings suggested by both of the wonderful hosts. Definitely earned a five out of five review, and we will be back after we finish our summer long ice cream crawl.

I have been here a few times: twice for ice cream and then once for mini golf. I really enjoyed the mini golf. We around 1:00 on a Saturday and it wasn't very busy! $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for kids, it was a perfect way to spend an hour. The ice cream isn't my favorite but it's cold and on a hot summer day it does the trick. I'm more of a hard ice cream person over soft, that's why it's not my favorite ice cream in the area.

Small? Chocolate and vanilla twist soft serve.

We were craving some soft serve ice cream today so we stopped by Pirate's Hide Out. We went inside to order as opposed to ordering from the window since it's still a little bit cold. The women at the counter were super friendly and nice! I had ordered a small chocolate vanilla twist in a dish with sprinkles, I did request pink sprinkles but ended up with rainbow, but no big deal since I think she accidentally gave me WAY too much ice cream for a small, so I definitely wasn't complaining!! Also, they serve Perry's ice cream!! Which is made in Buffalo!! Not as many places serve it out here so I love that they do! We will definitely be back when we need our ice cream fix, probably will stop in for some mini golf sometime too when it warms up. We didn't try the food here, and I probably don't really plan to, but it's a good spot for ice cream! This is probably the best place in a relatively short drive (at least for me) for some ice cream! I wouldn't necessarily drive across town for it, but if you live or are nearby then give it a shot!

Well-maintained and playable mini-golf course that's a bit of a knockoff on the Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf chain but is cheaper and a bit more scaled down than the original. My expectations were low but this has turned out to be the most playable miniature golf course in the region of the 10 we've tried now, and certainly one of the more pleasurable for overall experience. Another in our ongoing, comprehensive series of reviews of every miniature golf course within an hour's driving distance of Lock 7. $7 for adults, $6 for kids, which ties it for most expensive (excepting Pirate's Cove, which we haven't gotten to in the area but which we've played elsewhere), but you can play all day before 6 PM for $10 for adults and $8 for kids, which quickly makes it into the best bargain in the area if you play at least two games. We do prefer courses with "themes", and this one has got Pirates. But the theme is not really executed in the course. It's a putt-only, up-and-down course with modest obstacles. Each hole has some informative trivia about Pirate history and folkways posted on a sign (which one of my kids just ate up), but sadly they don't have any of these transformed into theme holes. The closest they came was a cannon obstacle on one hole, but that is literally the only hole with a "schtick" -- all the others have simple rocks and small shag-turf bunkers or slight rises as their obstacles. (And disappointingly, they didn't incorporate the cannon barrel - you just hit around the wheels in the gun carriage.) The water course does go through a sort of semi-fake little ship, or at least a mast, but the water course plays no part in any of the holes, which seems like a real waste. (The closest you come is one hole where it's possible to accidentally hit it off the side into the water). Sandtraps are filled with large gravel, which is the way to do it: no sand mess on the course, and you can play the ball out of the trap if you really want. The course does get superior marks for playability, though. The maintenance is by far the best of any of the ten courses we've been on. Greens were not threadbare, and only had a few odd nicks in them. Cups were in good shape, and in general the greens had very little debris on them. But the basic design of the holes gets the highest marks. True shots are rewarded with close proximity to the holes. Most of the multilevels reward making the upper hole shot with a ball very close to the hole with a chance of going in on one shot. There are at least two different strategies available for almost every hole, which always makes group play much more interesting (and encourages going back again). The brick edging, even though it's mostly on a curved layout, provides a fair amount of opportunity for banking because it's not a "hard" layout, and banking around curves is surprisingly enjoyable on this course. And there are only two potential "up and back" holes (which are always particularly frustrating for younger players). Greens are true and medium-speed. I There was some "lippiness" on some cups, and seams in the turf are visible on some holes, and there are no "tee mats" at all, resulting in more turf wear in the tee-off area. So they have room for improvement here, but as noted above, it's still the best-maintained course we've run across thus far. Excellent plus: a full practice green before the first hole, with three holes in it. I appreciate this and if there's a line it's a way of killing time while you wait for the first hole to clear. More Pluses: there's a nice picnic shelter out back in a grassy area; it's quiet (no amplified noise and the road noise is surprisingly low); and it's got the best snack shack (a cafe, really) of any mini golf place we've been to thus far. The latter has espresso/cappucino drinks and pretty reasonable hot grill fare, including hot dogs Michigan style (with meat sauce). All in all, it's not our ideal course -- our ideal would have more original holes with kinetic themes (you HAVE to have at least three moving objects on a mini golf course, in our humble opinion) -- nor our favorite in the area, but it was a lot of fun because of the high playability and good maintenance, and probably the second-best experience we've had, certainly worth going back to.

This is already my fourth visit here this season, and I've been coming to Control Tower Ice Cream for years. It never disappoints. They have a huge variety of both soft serve and hard ice cream flavors, along with a ton of sundae options. Portion sizes are very generous too, both for sundaes and cones. Today I had the Chocolate Overload Sundae with Moose Tracks ice cream. It came with delicious hot fudge, little peanut butter cup pieces in the ice cream, Oreo crumbles, whipped cream, sprinkles, a cherry, and even a fun size Hershey bar on top. So good. While I was there the people in line in front of me got slushes that looked very much like bomb pop flavors. I bet there's awesome! Almost changed my choice but I stuck with my original sundae choice. I've also had their brownie sundae in the past, and that was excellent too. Trust me when I say a regular size is already pretty large. The large is enormous. This is probably my favorite ice cream place in the area, with Kurver Kreme right behind it. Another thing I really like is how quickly they move people through. Even when there's a line, I've never had to wait very long to order or get my ice cream. They also have go-karts and batting cages, which makes it a fun place overall. The go-karts aren't open until May 16th, but it's nice having those attractions there. 5 stars.

We typically go up to Rob and Deb's in Glens Falls but Dan's is closer. What a disappointment. I'm not sure if it was Dan that served us or he had just found the most miserable, rude " I don't want to be here." staff member out there, because that is what we got. He was sullen, snippy, rude and actually seemed like he resented us being there. Huge turn off. We ordered 3 small ice creams, and they were indeed small! Definitely not reflective of the price, which was more indicative of a larger size. I was disappointed, but the snippy service we had received prior to actually getting the ice cream left a yucky taste anyway. We will not be going back, and will instead continue to drive to an alternative. Maybe Guptil's, which is also nearby. These days, with so many other options, service and being polite to people is key. An older couple arrived shortly after us and he was equally rude to them. The one star is because we did actually get ice cream. I'd give zero stars for service.

Many of the holes show a recent sprucing up, although about half still have threadbare turf and are missing "schticks", it still has the feel of a place where an owner cares about how things look. The holes are a mixture of nyeah to moderately interesting. The two that standout are #14, where you have to launch over a fountain, which is fun but the engineering of the ramp wasn't done nicely enough to allow a true skill shot; and #17, a deviously simple-seeming rotating hole (yes, the cup is not in the same spot, it spins around). No Insane Clown hole, which I consider a plus, and one of the better windmills I've seen. I do find it a bit annoying that dead-on shots for trick holes where the "feeder hole" should lead to a hole in one are misaligned; this was the case on two holes, and the 18th hole had a lip to it that made launching into the hole-in-one zone a bit of an adventure. All in all in terms of fun factor and playability it's only slightly above average, but the real grass in place of concrete paths and generally homey feel about the place lead me to give it a fourth star on warm-and-fuzzies. We've been to other courses in the area (we're in the midst of a comprehensive review of every mini-golf in an hour's driving distance of Lock 7) and so far this is the only one we wanted to play again right away, and the only one where they'd obviously bothered to sweep the leaf and grass debris off prior to opening. The large caboose that serves as the snack bar will attract the kids, but unfortunately since the inside is the food prep area, they will in turn be disappointed that they can't go inside it. We did enjoy some soft-serv icecream, but I have to give them downgrades for not knowing how to do a proper dip. Why does nobody know how to do a swirl dip anymore? Is it a lost art?

My review includes two stars for fun -- my grandson and I enjoyed ourselves but …read more.. Clearly the main purpose of this establishment is now the food section which looked well maintained on the surface. The best thing I can say about the mini golf is that we had brand new shiny balls and the surrounding grounds were well maintained. However, the artificial turf on the "fairways" was in pretty bad condition with multiple bare spots around the course as well as one split section that is raised on both edges and effectively blocks the ball. We also noticed that one of the water features has an unsightly horizontal water leak/spray. The design is also faulty where numerous holes have a slope away from the hole and even if you get very close, the ball is likely to roll far away. Finally, the rebound walls are often too low which allows easy jumps of the fairways. At one point my ball went off green's side where there was a bad slope and no retaining wall. I went to the window to see how they wanted me to handle it and nobody was around. The players ahead of us had left their clubs and balls and pencil on the counter. When we left several minutes later, we did the same. Why is there no attendant? It seems to me that two things have happened. The business got their permit from the town by proposing mini golf. Once that was in they snuck in the food permit and the food became the major profit center and the mini golf is now neglected as an inconsequential profit center but part of the town permitting process. Since this property is in or very near the airport's crash zone, mini golf was probably permitted as a low density activity whereas a restaurant would not have been. Therefore, the restaurant was added later once the business was established for another purpose. I'm only guessing but I'd wager I'm quite accurate.

It's the kind of course that, after having toured 13 other courses in the region this summer, we would like to give props to for the effort of having a nice course but which made us yawn for the most part. Pricing $7 for adults, $6 for kids, and "printed coupons only", as the sign in the window says, so you can forget the smartphone revolution, my fellow Yelpers. This is a medium-long putt course with a ton of purple geraniums, nice-looking granite boulders, decorative rocks, and watercourses and a waterfall in the middle. These parts are spiffy, and despite the piped-in-overloud music, add to the experience. Unfortunately the water isn't really used as play hazard much - there are three holes where it's possible to hit it into the water, but the rough keeps the ball out on one and sort of does on another, and on the third you'd have to be the worst golfer ever to hit it into the water right off the tee. The boulders and bricks tend to make the balls bounce hard, and the course plays fast in part due to worn turf and lots of uphill / downhill holes, so "skill" shots are very randomized. Smaller kids will not do well on this course because of the requirement to hit hard, and even we ran up against the per hole stroke limit a number of times (not to boast, but we've become very seasoned mini golfers from all this gadding about.) There are some tells as to how this was not designed for playability. There are "drain zones", spots where balls tend to end up no matter where they're hit, on many of the holes. On very few of the holes is there a meaningful choice to play the hole two or more different ways -- when this is done properly it makes a good course into a great one, and when it's done poorly, as here, it just makes the holes kind of mechanical. There were a few holes we liked OK - #17, a nice water hole in a sort of teardrop pattern with a kickout into a pond, #11, and #14, the hole in front of the waterfall. #2 features a bed of flowers as a sort of sand trap, which was nifty, but they're easily avoidable. It's tempting to downgrade this to two stars out of sheer boredom and lack of respect for the game, but for a casual game you can do worse. I'd call this more of a dating-course than one for kids or others who want a "serious" / fun game - it has ambiance and the randomization will probably mean your scores will end up close no matter who the better player is.

Apparently, it opened within the past 5 years and it shows: everything looks to be in really nice shape. A GPS or map is handy to find this place, though, as it is off the beaten path and we nearly drove by it. Their website lists different hoursthan what their phone message says, so I would call first and hope to talk to a real person. The course is mostly grass carpet lined with bricks. There are very few ways to get your ball "off course" unless you hit it too hard adn bounce out or have it roll back. There are no tee-markers at the start of each hole. The main challanges are based on hills/slopes.. there are no windmills, water areas, sand traps, etc. to speak of. Thus, it was very straightforward if not a bit uninspired. In fact, some holes had what apparently looked like easy shots but I took the hard way just to try out the course and challenge myself. The holes did not have metal cups in them, so there were not any rims to deflect slow moving balls from dropping in. However, the thickness of the carpet all around the holes made them marginally smaller. Each hole has a history of Saratoga on a sign. There was a lounge area part-way through, and the large water feature was nice. They serve ice cream, including ice cream nachos (sounds yummy) and milkshakes, and we were told a nearby pizza place was opening in a few weeks. If you like to smoke pot (I don't), they have marajuana-themed nights as well.
