What an amazingly cool place. Snowman is a family owned ice cream business, around since the 1950's. They are located smack in the middle of a mixed use neighborhood of apartment buildings, a saloon, and a BBQ joint. This place has character, that's for sure. Their website boasts that they "produce all of the premium hard ice cream, yogurts, and sherbets we serve to you on premises daily". How cool is that? We ordered three cones: Peanut Butter Cup, Chocolate Chip, and Chocolate Frozen Yogurt. Oddly, they don't sell the traditional sugar cones but do offer a cake cone and a waffle cone. The ice cream was fabulous and very reasonably priced. I love the fact that this is a local independent store and not a cookie cutter franchise. Only my husband is crazy enough to take me out for surprise ice cream in the middle of winter. After driving down 5th Ave for what seemed much too far we saw the cute stand on the side. They had quite a few cars considering it's winter. We were able to read part of the menu from the car and good thing because man was it cold out. They had a number of interesting flavored Sundays but as soon as I saw the Samoa I knew that was what I wanted. The cashiers were efficient and friendly. The Sunday came with soft or 2 scoops of hard. You apparently can't get the specialty Sundays in kiddie size :( I opted for the hard with coconut, and khalua chocolate almond as my 2 scoops. It also came with hot fudge, toasted coconut, nuts, whip cream and a cherry. I asked for less whip cream since they give quite a bit. I've been coming here since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I am am now a bit bigger but nothing here has changed in the past thirty years. That's usually a sign that the establishment is doing something right. There are a few places left like this that make you happy just knowing they still exist. I'm being dramatic, I know, but snowman is nostalgia mixed with truly great homemade ice cream, a killer combination. Plus, they restored the old ice cream sign out in front which looks amazing especially at night. Finally went here after 10 years living in the area. Ice cream places tend to be very local - few are willing to travel far just for an ice cream fix. Therefore, the 'best' ice cream is typically really the 'best in my neighborhood'. Fortunately there are usually enough options for people to find a 'best local' place. The ice cream at Snowman is very good but I think the best part is the low cost/volume provided. Low cost+ volume is not always a positive if the product is bad but Snowman serves a good product at a good value. The smallest dish/cone (kiddie) is more than enough for a typical person and only costs $2.50 here. I am not sure I would travel far to go here over some closer options but if I am in the area for other reasons I will certainly return. [Note - I tried the pistachio hard ice cream before I read the other review here detailing the pineapple addition. I actually did note pieces of something I could not identify - reminded me of small pieces of maraschino cherries buy taste and texture but could have been pineapple. And while I'm quite loyal to my hometown ice cream stands up in Glens Falls, 3 years in Troy was too long to go without once visiting what many call the best ice cream stand in the region. I wanted ice cream, so I joined the crowds waiting outside Snowman on a chilly March evening. Getting to the window and paying $2.50 for a small, I was expecting a small amount of ice cream. But even a "small" at Snowman is massive and, frankly, plenty for most adults. I can only imagine how big the large is. Seeing that the hard ice cream is made fresh in house, I tried the Coffee Mocha Chip. It was among the best mocha chip ice creams I have ever had, falling behind only the legendary Graeter's in Ohio. You definitely get your money's worth here. My ONLY complaint about Snowman was the wait time. 25 minutes in a line that barely stretched beyond the awning in front is painfully slow and many other patrons were complaining about the speed of service. Definitely not the place to come if you want a quick cone, but if you're willing to wait, it's hard to get a better value. read more

Sometimes good food (or dessert) can offset "oopsies," which pretty much sums up my visit to Snowman. When I sampled their butter pecan ice cream, I got a bit of pecan shell. That's bad, but the good news is that it pretty much reenforces that they make their own ice cream. Also, I ordered strawberry cheesecake ice cream, but I got strawberry instead, which is a really deep red almost the color of black raspberry ice cream. But the quality and taste of the ice cream made up for it. The strawberry had a really strong, fresh flavor, with large chunks of frozen fresh strawberries. The vanilla was some of the best vanilla I have ever had. One other thing I like is that they offer you a 1 1/2 scoop option (their "small"). Others in my group raved about their shakes. All in all, this was a very good experiences, and the "oopsies" would not keep me from returning. read more

Finally got my husband to take me here after he fessed up that he had been here without me a few months ago. It was such a hot today, anything cold would have tasted delicious but Snowman's is not just ANYTHING. Snowman's is a well-oiled ice cream producing machine. They run it like a pit crew. By the time my husband finished ordering some young lady behind the scenes had assembled what turned out to be a work of art. We ordered a 2 scoop sundae. Peanut butter cookie dough and brownie topped off the the trifecta of whipped topping, nuts, and cherries. Ok and some fudge.....couldn't help ourselves. It was fantastic. It made us feel like we were cheating on our beloved Guptil's. We were able to snag a parking space on what was a busy evening and it is charming in its own way because of the way it's nestled into the surrounding neighborhood which makes it unique compared to many of the other local ice cream stands. It is clearly a neighborhood staple, but doesn't offer as much seating as many of the others do which was a negative for me. I was standing in line, OUTSIDE, in the bright sunshine, keeping the requisite 6 feet away from other patrons, waiting to order. I had a mask on, pulled down under my nose, when a clerk at the window yelled out at me to pull my mask up. I know the law, which mandates "wearing a face covering outside the home if unable to maintain social distance." I was obeying the law by maintaining the required social distance. I've seen the divisiveness, the fights over the mask issue. I had planned to pull my mask up when it was my turn. Instead, I pulled it up when I was chastised by the clerk. That's the last time I'll do that. I'm done with Snowman. Tell your fanatic clerk who handles the money to stop harassing customers. They have great unique flavors that are just different enough without being so crazy that they aren't also delicious. My favorites are the ones that include oreos--berry oreo and coffee oreo. Went here for a nice treat on a beautiful day and it hit the spot! Waited in a very reasonable line for a great Saturday afternoon. I was so excited to get my soft serve vanilla and orange sherbet it's always delicious (grew up coming here). I decided to get chocolate dip as I used to always get the cherry and wanted to change it up. I was soooo sad that they told me they don't dip the soft in a waffle cone and I would have to get it in a dish also. I got it and it was half covered and I had some chocolate sauce in the dish instead of on the ice cream. It was still very good just sad I couldn't have it all over the ice cream. Hands down the Snowman has the best soft ice cream I've had. Again, my opinion. With that being said, I gauge any place that sells ice cream especially if my daughters and friends are tagging along. The owner is so personable and remembers your name. It's not a cocky attitude. He has many customers. names to remember & I have only one. Long story short. If you find y0urself in NY, find your way to 114th Street & 5th Ave and get yourself what I believe to be the best tasting hard or soft serve ice cream bar none.
