I've never reviewed Snowman! Shocking oversight on my part. Snowman has been my new ice cream hotness (coolness?) ever since moving to Cohoes. Even though the line can be 40 people deep. Along with On The Farm and the Dairy Haus, it has the best vanilla soft serve around. And don't get me started on the hard ice cream flavors. They seem to have one or two new flavors every time I come here. There is a great variety of hard ice creams, all made in house. And I love watching the shock on people's faces when they order a sundae for the first time and are overwhelmed by the size of it. I remember the first time I split an apple pie sundae with my wife. Memories! So good, but definitely worth splitting. So yes, the line is that long for a reason. Plus, they've got a bright, retro sign out front! What an institution. Ice cream is good but the policy on no tap water or ice is ridiculous. I walked up with a babys sippy cup to get tap water or ice when water was denied (after spending 40 dollars on ice cream including a tip) to get a rude response of "bottled water a dollar" repeated a second time when asking for ice. Not to mention its exactly 100° out, you should almost offer water for a 3 year old or animals. read more

I tried what many people rave about and I was disappointed. I went after dinner and was literally surrounded by customers standing by the window either swearing or smoking. There were cigarette butts everywhere. Then 2 dogs from different patrons began viciously barking at each other. When I finally got my chance to order the girl at the window was texting on her phone so I had to wait. I was hoping the ice cream would make up for my waiting experience and sadly enough it was bad. The vanilla was watery I had to through out my cone because it was giving me a stomachache And to make matters worse when I went to through it out a customer turned in my direction and blew smoke in my face. Ugggg. Won't try it again. Scary and gross time. Could not bring my mom there. read more

This place is by far my favorite ice cream place. They have a great selection of soft serve and hard ice cream. They also have things like slushies, lemonade, and shakes. I come here as often as I can because I love it so much. Although the lines are usually long, it is worth the wait. I am a pretty basic guy, so I like soft serve chocolate on a cone. Great family-run business with home made ice cream. The ice cream could be better. I like Ben & Jerry's and Friendly's more. You can't beat the prices, though. When you order a pint. They give you the pint and then pile an additional 3/4 pint on top to "eat on the way home." I like this place, I really do. Note: I would avoid this place at night if you are with a family. Snowman is a great (and apparently legendary) ice cream place in Troy. I had heard of it before, but didn't get a chance to try it until relatively recently. It gets very busy here (as most of these types of places do), but they move through the lines pretty quickly. The ice cream is very good, it's not expensive, and they take credit cards. It's definitely legendary as Frank said and I think it's been around since the 50s! It's a cute little place. They have a ton of different hard ice cream flavors and a few soft flavors. They even have the Only 8 for those who are looking for something healthier. My absolute favorite is the hard coffee oreo. My brother swears by the orange/vanilla soft serve. The prices are seriously the best in the area. It is a bargain and a small is like other shops mediums/larges. It can definitely get busy but the line moves quickly. They also take credit cards which is a major plus since most ice cream places don't. We drive 20 minutes to go to this place driving by about 4 other places on the way, so yes it's worth checking out!! read more

Snowman is the best ice cream ever! I have gone here for years and they always have a line outside attesting to their great ice cream. There is a large selection of flavors of hard but they also have the standard soft serve flavors, and the Only 8 which is great for people who are watching their weight of can't have a lot of sugar. They have fantastic sundaes. I could go on forever. PS- The organge pineapple is the best! I drive out of my way to stop by Snowman and impatiently wait for them to open each year. The portions are generous- I usually get a small which is basically 2 scoops and it's only about $2. You can't go wrong here! I also suggest going for a walk around a few of the blocks and see the old churches and enjoy the beauty of some of the buildings. I thought all hope was lost for quality small-batch local hard ice cream (I do love Stewart's, but it's not the same). Then I tried the Banana ice cream at Snowman. Incredible fresh banana flavor. Tastes like it's straight off the tree (that's how bananas are grown, right?). Also tried the Oreo Raz (a flavor I've NEVER seen before) and the strawberry cheesecake. Both were incredibly good.
