This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area until tonight. The food was terrible. The boneless spare ribs were like rubber and the Mongolian beef tasted like the meat was bad. When I picked the food up it looked like a new family had taken over. I don't know that I'll ever go back here. UPDATE: The new family is now getting it right. It's a Monday night dinner time and there's a constant flux of people. I haven't been here in a while but the food is very consistent, prices fair and service is pleasant. It appears clean although they didn't have sit down tables due to the Covid people seemed happy and staff were wearing masks. The do a good job on cold sesame noodles, I found the meat and dough in the wonton soup tough. The eggroll wasn't greasy. Skip this place. Zenbu was disappointing. We ordered some shrimp toast which is one of my favorites. Instead of shrimp it was primarily ground pork. Authentic shrimp toast can have pork fat in it to bind but never ground pork. I don't understand why they don't just call it pork toast. There was a couple of small pieces of shrimp in the entire shrimp toast but it was over powered by pork flavor and oil. Each shrimp's toast held about a tablespoon of oil. Years ago, this was a great restaurant. I have been there twice in the last month or so, and have been disappointed both times. Recently, I ordered orange chicken that was supposed to come with white rice, but as I also ordered shrimp fried rice, they just put that in the container and skipped the white rice. Zenbu is one of the better restaurants in the area for Chinese food and sushi and one of only two Asian restaurants in North Greenbush. This strip plaza restaurant is located in Defreestville and only a few minutes from my NY home, a very convenient place to grab some takeout. The prices here are pretty reasonable, most dishes/items priced under $10. They also offer 32 Luncheon Specials ($5.25 plus tax) until 3PM and Dinner Special Combination Platters ($7.95 plus tax) to choose from. I've stopped in here for lunch takeout a few times when I'm in town. My lunch is freshly cooked to order in quick fashion and ready to go in under 10 minutes. My favorite Luncheon Special is the L26 Shrimp With Garlic Sauce served with pork fried rice and choice of soup. The portion of food is good. The shrimp with garlic sauce dish tastes very fresh and has a mix of fresh vegetables (broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, peppers, snow peas), baby corn, bamboo shoots, and tender jumbo shrimp (cleaned) in a sweet sauce. The pork fried rice (goldenrod color) has a firm texture with a mix of peas, carrots, and small pieces of pork. The Hot & Sour Soup is really good, which has a good mix of vegetables, egg, tofu, and bamboo in a mild spicy broth. I will continue to order lunch from Zenbu since it's been dependable and the food is very tasty! read more

There was no sweetness at all. The sesame chicken was solid, the sauce was sweet and flavorful. The chicken was actually cooked properly. The fried rice was average, nothing special, but had decent flavor. The egg rolls were generic, but crispy. The service is usually fast and the price is average. This place has the best Chicken with Garlic Sauce on this side of the Hudson River. Make sure you ask for it extra spicy, of course. Also try the Singapore Mei Fun and the Mongolian chicken. The staff is friendly and the little sit-down area inside is clean and nice. I still don't get why their menu says "Pharmaceutical Reps Welcome." I had not idea that pharm. reps were shunned from other Chinese restaurants. Poor pharm. reps. Of course, I'm joking. I ordered take out tonight based on some good internet reviews. Frustrated with the continual decreasing quality of the take out Chinese in West Sand Lake I'm hopeful to find a new place to share my hard earned money with. Their eel sashimi and NY Roll were very good quality. My wife who normally does not eat sushi enjoyed the roll. We also had an order of fried pork dumplings, steamed shrimp dumplings, and steamed vegetable dumplings. The pork and shrimp dumplings were also very good, despite having dough that was thicker than I like. The vegetable dumplings have a cabbage heavy filling that is uninspired and bland. I use to think this place had awesome quality when there was a young Asian guy who worked at the front. He spoke 100% English, made good recommendations and was very friendly, plus the food was great! When he left there was a middle aged woman who took the counter. Service and food stayed the same. However over the last year a new young girl runs the front. Unfortunately she barely understands English, she gets our same orders wrong time and time again ,and I truly believe the quality of food has gone down. Not sure if the owner changed. But this just isn't my favorite anymore. So my search for good take out Chinese food continues. Tonight I tried the beef with broccoli combo, with an egg roll, pork fried rice, egg drop/ wonton soup, and fried dumplings. Of the entire meal the only thing that was tasty were the dumplings and they were strangely fried only on one side. The egg roll was mediocre at best, and the soup was just ok. Please don't bother with the beef with broccoli...it was just terrible! No taste at all, as if they forgot to season the food with any garlic, salt or any kind of flavor. As far as Chinese food goes, this really isn't anything out of this world but it's good. It's not questionable like other places I've had. Better than mall Chinese and is fairly fresh I would say. I'm definitely ordering again. Good prices. They don't deliver at all which is pretty depressing but they're in an easy location to get to. We ordered two pretty generic American Chinese dishes - a sesame chicken combo with white rice and an egg roll and the sweet and sour chicken with fried rice and an egg roll. The chicken was good, tender, not questionable or chewy. The rice was cooked and the egg rolls tasted like they actually made them. All of the sauces didn't taste bottled. I tried Zenbu after recently moving to the area and I was pleasantly surprised. Given it's American-Chinese, it was pretty good quality and it tasted good. The sesame chicken was spicy, and the General Tso's was sweet, seemed a little backwards. The dining area was small, but was decorated nicer than your typical chinese place. I plan on trying their sushi soon, love me some sushi. One thing, bring cash. I didn't know that and lucky me I had some on me (which I never do). read more

I love Zenbu...it is my preferred Chinese food place. I prefer the Orange chicken here....it is the best orange chicken I have had at any Chinese food place. They are prompt for delivery, have really great lunch specials and are pretty friendly too. My only gripe that I have with them is I never get charged the same thing for my meal! I don't know what the issue is but I always just say I want an orange chicken meal and sometimes when I pick it up I get everything that comes with the lunch special and the lunch special price, sometimes I get whatever comes with the platter prices, and sometimes its the combination prices - I just can't keep it straight! I tried to ask one of the employees about it once and she tried to explain it to me, and I have tried to order it just as she said for me to, but I still have the same problems....luckily if I end up getting a larger order of it than I intended, it still warms up good for leftovers. Only downfall...I have no idea how much money to plan on bringing with me on any given trip. read more

Sorry Zenbu but this was my first and last order. I looked at your menu and saw Seaweed Salad under the "Sushi" section. Since other places offer seaweed salad sushi rolls I figured you might too. When I called I was told that it wasn't a sushi roll, but a salad. Fine. I ordered that and an avocado and cucumber roll. Picked it up- got back to work and the seaweed salad is FROZEN SOLID in the middle. The rest of the salad around the iceberg is warmish and smells funny. I've worked in kitchens so hey, I get it, shit happens. But when I called to let you know that the salad was frozen solid in the middle, you told me to microwave it. Doesn't work that way. You are serving PREPARED food aka- I should be able to get back to my office and eat it. Can you imagine a pizza place serving you a raw pizza and then asking you to just pop it in the oven and finish cooking it yourself? Are you even supposed to microwave seaweed?..... Too bad, you are close to my job and I happen to love seaweed salad- when I can eat it. read more

I always go here for food. I come from wherever I'm living: Albany, Troy, Guilderland. The drive is worth it. The way they make their food is like a gourmet style. It's taste is always fresh and cooked right. I've had issues with other places where they don't cook their food enough or overdo it, but at Zenbu it's always done perfectly. I find their Chow Mein Fun as their best dish and highly recommend it. Everyone I bring there says it's the best in the area.
