I did takeout at Asian Tea House. The entry way is pretty and the interior looked inviting. I'm sorry that I didn't have time to stay and dine-in. I was met by the owners at the front counter. They were friendly. Their service was fast. I placed the order online. I ordered roast pork with broccoli and chicken lo mein. Nothing fancy . The broccoli in brown sauce was great but I didn't like the fatty cut of roast pork. I won't order roast pork from there again. If you don't mind literally, "chewing the fat," then the preparation of this dish is fine. But I'm taking off one star because of it. I've never had it served that way. Otherwise, it was a nice experience. This restaurant serves a lot of touristy Asian fusion food which explains the fortune cookies and dishes like Egg Foo Young. Long Islander's are funny because we are convinced that our Chinese restaurant is always the best. On a recent trip to Rensselaer area a group of us went out for dinner here... and no one was disappointed. A group of us were starting a new Kiwanis club and since the restaurant is a member we knew that this would be the perfect place for us. We were seated in a private section and after reviewing the menu and making the selections, the food game began. Plenty of room here in the party room which was connected to another large dining room. No windows but ample light which is good. I hate to eat in low light and dark restaurants. One thing to note, the portions here are huge. An order of soup was clearly for three people. I played it safe and ordered a combination plate. A nice hot bowl of egg drop/wonton mix was delicious. I tasted the hot and sour and that too was excellent. My simple dish of Egg Foo Young was cooked perfectly and I really enjoyed the sauce on top. My wife had an incredible shrimp and vegetables plate. Again, extremely tasty, filed with crisp-delicious vegetables and plenty of well prepared shrimp. I am new to the area, and I have been looking for a good Chinese restaurant. Guess what? I found it!!! The wait staff was friendly. The dishes on the menu reminded me of the "old school restaurants in Chinatown, NY" The ambiance was " old school" but I loved it. The only critic I have was the "crispy noodles" they give you when you first sit down, were super hard but the sauce was tasty! I will definitely be going back and trying more new dishes! read more

Yesterday we had a party of 8. We do this once a year. This was our 5th get together at the Asian Tea House. As usual the food was excellent. The service is always great. The owner and his wife are the nicest people ever. The restaurant is always clean. The portion's are big. If you like sushi the fish is always fresh. As no one could finish their meal and everyone took home their leftovers. All of us have gone back even when it's not a party and we live a distance from there. I ordered Shrimp Egg Foo Young and it arrived via UberEats with some kind of mystery red sauce that tasted like stale ketchup. Not the traditional mushroom gravy that is generally served with Egg Foo Young. So basically they don't know how to make Egg Foo Young. Like, at all! Frankly, the mystery dish that they sent was inedible. I had to appeal to UberEats to issue me a refund - which they quickly did after viewing the photos that I sent them (see attached) along with an apology. And now, a whole day later, I am still making restroom trips - my entire intestinal tract is just purging itself out of some kind of the most dramatic display of anger and discomfort. Fast service, horrible food. We have tried to love this local "favorite" but find everything to just taste old, off, bad, or over/under cooked. Despite a visit to the restaurant, take out, or delivery, we have only been able to rely on the worst Chinese/Asian American food I've ever had. And that's saying a lot. Egg Rolls and Boneless ribs were adequate but rice was beyond greasy (not the good kind of greasy) and everything else made the whole family gag. Grease tastes old, fried wanton pieces for soup taste like they have been in a dirty refrigerator and soaked with floor grease. I wish they would consider revamping and trying fresh food to cook. Or at least trying a slightly higher quality food than whatever they have. Try another spot for your food. read more

I tried the Pad Thai with shrimp, which is marked as "NEW" on the menu. It was the absolute worst I have ever tasted! The noodles were so over-cooked, they just broke to pieces and mushed altogether with the mounds of crushed peanuts and everything else in there that was unrecognizable. I have to say the shrimp were huge and plentiful, but everything was so super spicy hot, I could barely get through a few bites. I took the shrimp out and rinsed them off, but that's all I could eat. First, I have never had spicy Pad Thai - it's usually a mild dish. Second, this item was NOT flagged with the usual hot chili pepper on the menu. No thanks. I'll admit, my expectations were too high based on Yelp's 4.5 stars. I ordered sushi and would never do that again. I could only eat half of my order, and honestly, every bite after the first one was forced. The other items we ordered (pork dumpling appetizer and Mongolian Beef entree) were more palatable, but on par with a typical Americanized takeout place.... For a higher price, however. The friendly service and decor are above average, and they have a full bar, so I do want to give them credit on those points. Stopped in for a late lunch, and pulled into a giant empty parking lot. Cynical me. I then go into a restaurant with a name like "Tea House," but can't find tea on the menu - not even a photo of tea. I'll try the sushi instead. After sitting at the sushi bar, I was presented with a western spoon, fork and a simple one-page laminated menu, with lunch specials only. The sushi listed was chef's choice nigiri or limited maki selections. I was not given a pair of hashi until I requested an à la carte sushi menu (apparently, the to-go menu). Who are the normal customers that accept this? But the server was pleasant enough. The lighting for the sushi bar itself is pretty good, and it has a much more open style (photo) than most of the local restaurants, and good news, no glaring television. The TV is in the alcohol bar, in another room. Of course, this really open style means that everyone has a clear view of the charred / damaged toaster oven and microwave along the back wall, which should probably have been cleaned and/or replaced some time ago. Prior to the main, an extremely watered down soup and unappetizing salad were brought out. For each, the taste lived down to my initial expectations. The chef seem personable enough, but was far more casually dressed (photo) than any other sushi chef I've seen here in the Capital District. I wonder why every other chef, without exception, wears a uniform coat and some form of hair covering. Hmm. The sushi itself was pretty good. The maki preparations were done simply enough, although the spicy salmon wasn't spicy. The two-plate plating (photo) had an addition of an amuse bouche ("It's extra gift, for you!") consisting of a very small sashimi salad in a classic soup spoon. Instead of thanks, now I wondered why I was not offered a soup spoon with my soup earlier. I would have enjoyed a soup spoon more than the chef's clever drawings of birds and fish added to each plate. The uncooked fish took significantly longer to prepare than the maki / cooked items, due to the mackerel. The mackerel was not bad, but that may be because I watched the chef thaw the frozen 250g single filet vacuum package, and peel off the skin before slicing off a couple of pieces for me. No de-boning skills needed here. At least I know it wasn't sitting in the display case overnight. Also, I noticed that none of the nigiri had wasabi added under the fish, a step added by only a few of the local chefs. Reading the other reviews, I thought they would have presented a much better product, seeing as the city center, and that competition across the river, is visible from the sidewalk in front of the restaurant. First time at this restaurant. It was recommended by a local. They were short handed but you wouldn't of know it. The bathrooms and front of the restaurant was very clean. The waiter was great. The food was priced appropriately. We ordered very common Chinese food. The won ton soup was delicious. The Hot and Sour soup had a strange taste. The spare ribs were advertised as BBQ ribs, but no BBQ. The fried Dumplings tasted store frozen. Egg Rolls were great. Table noodles were a nice touch. We placed a pick up order. It was timely and service was fine, but the food, wow. No. The General Tso was orange and mostly breading. All the sauce was pooled at the bottom and it was basically flavorless. The Chow Fun was bland. The sushi was completely unremarkable. They have terrific, friendly customer service, and the restaurant is clean, and new. The complimentary green tea comes in an authentic tall, handleless mug like the one I bought at the Asian market, and the tea itself is so tasty and smooth, no sugar is needed. But that's where the positive things taper off. I was really disappointed at how greasy and salty the food was. I ordered broccoli chicken and shrimp and asked for the garlic sauce instead of the the brown sauce on the menu. I don't think they managed that swap because the sauce was still brown and nowhere near garlicky. My spring roll was flavorless and no dipping sauce was offered so I ate it dry. They had forgotten my soup, and when it finally arrived it was just as flavorless so that I had wished I had just let them omit it. As other Yelpers have observed the food is comparable to mall Chinese food, and I would agree. The food could be improved if some of the traditional hot sauces like sweet pepper, chili oil, or hot mustard sauce were offered, either in little side dishes or in pour spouts that remain table-side. But those were sadly absent, and I didn't think to ask since I was just trying to finish my meal. For a lunch-menu meal, my ticket came to $13 which was the last disappointment, since they hadn't gotten my order right. Normally I expect lunches to be a little cheaper due to the smaller portions. The food is really great. I usually go out of my way to eat here but I think i'll be getting take out from now on. They clearly have no idea how to run a restaurant. Our food all came out at different times and we had to watch eat other eat. They didn't have silverware or napkins at the table. Asian Tea House opened recently in the former Yip's Chinese Restaurant, now serving Chinese and Japanese cuisine. The name sounds very similar to another Chinese/Japanese eatery in Delmar. I was given a glass of cold water and a pot of hot tea and deep fried rice noodles with duck & hot mustard dipping sauces. For lunch, I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki Lunch Special Deluxe Box ($10.50 plus tax) served with salad and miso soup. The miso soup was good, which was served very hot with a mix of tofu, seaweed, miso paste in a light broth. The salad had a mix of greens, lettuce, cucumber, red onions, and cherry tomato with a red ginger dressing, which had a tart flavor. The Lunch Box had a good sampling of food including the grilled salmon (crisp outside and soft & juicy inside) covered in a tangy teriyaki sauce with sesame seedsn (served with sprouts, baby corn, broccoli & asparagus), 3 gyozas (pan fried & browned outside), California roll (6 pcs), and pork fried rice (yellow color with tender pieces of roast pork, rice overdone and soft). Compared to my last visit when the place was Yip's (It was okay), the food I had was filling and tasted pretty good. I've never written a review like this. Based on the high reviews, we tried this place for take-out even bypassing other places we like to get to it. When I arrived about 5:15 p.m. on a weekday to pick up the order I'd made online, the guy at the counter looked at me and then turned his back to me and continued to chat on the phone for several minutes. I am writing this review as we are trying to eat the food here at home. It is some of the worst Chinese food we have ever eaten, perhaps the worst, and we love Chinese food and are quite easy to please and eager to eat. And the worst part that I'll tell you up front in case you don't read the whole review is that my husband found a 6" piece of hair in the egg foo young and it was not ours. He pulled it out and placed it on a white paper napkin and we both just stared at it and couldn't eat anymore. But we weren't eating much anyway. Everything we ordered was all so poorly cooked and had absolutely no flavor. For the first time in our lives, we are not saving any left overs. The broth, wrapper, and meat filling of the Wonton soup were bland, including the wrapper, the meat, and the filling. We usually end up eating all of the soup no matter how full we are, but we couldn't even finish small bowls. It simply tasted like nothing. The General Tso's chicken was so thin, over fried, and seriously tough that we had to get out steak knives to cut it and even then, some of the pieces could not be chewed. Like the soup, it had no flavor. It was like eating some kind of texture. The greasy mushroom egg foo young came smooshed sideways into a paper box and fell apart as we tried to carefully get it out. Again, we couldn't even taste egg or the mushrooms, totally flavorless. The sauce came in a styrofoam cup and although it had some flavor, it was not good. The small bag holding the crispy noodles was completely soaked through with grease by the time we got home and glistened they were so covered in it. So there it is. We are soooo disappointed. The fried noodles are bought now instead of fried, little things like sauce or tea not provided and you have to Ask for them and charged, to as far as Taking ingredients out of dishes, like mini corn or watercrest.. the sizes and taste of the egg rolls too.. they're smaller with cheap and less inside... Just to pinch a penny... when the guy has his Ugly Mercedes parked out front where customers should and have always parked. I doubt Yelpers rated it for deliciousness but more likely: around the corner from my house, same menu for 40 years, convenient and familiar. That's McDonald's business model. No interesting flavor, no Asian greens or fish. The combo plates are what I ate in the suburbs as a child 45+ years ago. Food that makes the soul weep. Not one Chinese person eats this dreck. Wonton soup was dull. Gyoza ok. General Tso's had no complexity of flavor, just sweet sauce directly from the bottle. Not a fresh taste in the vicinity. Yelpers let me down. Nishiki Sushi is better. A la Shanghai is leagues better. Rain leaves this dump in the dust. This is the Olive Garden of Chinese. Though I would not knowingly eat at an Olive Garden. read more
