We kept it light with a seaweed salad and a couple of rolls and everything came out fresh and nicely prepared. Service was great- friendly, quick and attentive without anyone hovering over us. Recently had friends visiting from out of town and we were in the Albany area for some touristy fun. We started to get hungry (a couple of folks were hangry...) so we tried a nearby restaurant that was a bit too crowded/more of a takeout spots/not everyone's jam. So, we decided to give Mr. Fuji a shot since it's in the same shipping center and had solid reviews. We were seated immediately and ordered a bunch of stuff: assorted rolls, sushi pieces, salads and soups. Everything was absolutely delicious and our friends were happy (which was the most important thing!). Service was excellent and friendly....i would definitely go back if I'm in the neighborhood. This is by far my favorite Japanese restaurant in the Albany area. Why? Because of the following: 1.) Always fresh dishes and ingredients. 2.) Unbelievable deals especially at lunch. 2.) No frills low key quiet little area. All the great Japanese dishes including tatsu-age fried chicken. Hard to find establishments that can do this chicken like they do in Japan. For many years this has been our go-to sushi restaurant in this area .... Had good quality, nice menu and they even kept a few special bottles of sake for us ... so imagine the surprise tonight to find a new menu, no alcohol (beer or sake) and some of our favorites were either gone or made into fancy complicated rolls instead of the simple combinations that made their sushi more authentic (having lived in Japan for a while and going back often, I feel qualified to judge) - sushi wasn't as well rolled and the fish wasn't sliced as precisely as before Time to look for a new place - sigh. read more

Coming from Los Angeles where the sushi is authentic and fantastic, I had low expectations. Mr.Fuji lowered them further. The sushi rice was not seasoned at all, the red snapper sushi was not super fresh and an over-refrigerated Firm texture and fishy taste as did the tuna tataki. Did we get food poisoning? No. But everything was a bit basic and just edible. Hoping to find better than decent authentic sushi in upstate NY , but that might be too much to hope for. read more

I just got the most amazing food for the best price from this restaurant!!! I ordered take out and I got the 2 roll lunch special and this place does not skimp!! I got two tube rolls and they were HUGE so much tuna and they were delicious and fresh! I also got two goyza and a miso soup all for $14! That's hard to find these days! It was also super quick! The food is excellent. The restaurant is very clean. I give this 3 instead of 5 stars because the service could be better. I was in today and needed to ask for to-go containers three times and I had to specify that me and my guest did not want to share to-go containers since we ordered different meals. Each meal cost $25 so I would anticipate that to-go containers would be factored in to the price. At one point, we put rice into the to-go containers provided and we were told we needed to use a smaller container, which had not yet been provided. The server brought it and then handled our food to remove it from the large container and put it in the smaller one. If we ordered this meal online, the entire thing would be packaged in to-go containers so I'm not sure what the issue was. I came here to celebrate my birthday so that made me not want to order any dessert. I would have spent more money had the service been more welcoming but I ate my food and left. I love this restaurant's food but I'm finally coming to the realization that this may not be a good spot for dining in until service improves a bit. The service is hit or miss here. read more

Came with 2 soups and 2 salads, which we upgraded to kani salad. The kani salad was very good. Sushi and sashimi was fresh and in a good variety. We would go back! Blech. Big disappointment. The interior is pretty enough and the miso soup is non-offensive but that's where the good points end. I went in for a weekday lunch and was sorely disappointed. I ordered the lunch of salmon teriyaki, which comes with miso soup and salad. The miso soup tasted average -- unremarkable but fine. The salad dressing on the sorry chunks of iceberg lettuce and one very sorry looking hothouse tomato slice that was supposed to be a salad was in a word: repulsive. The dressing was horrid -- tasted like russian dressing with a sweetener and rice vinegar. Me thinks not. The waitress asked if i wanted a fork with the salad, and I said yes. After removing my mostly untouched salad, she left me forkless for my entrée. The sushi I ordered as a perk to myself to start my meal was not awful: Toro, yellowtail and unagi. I said it was to start and shortly after being served the sushi my entrée arrived. The salmon teriyaki would be in close competition with a frozen TV dinner. That is, if I ate frozen TV dinners, which I do not as a rule. Nor do I voluntarily patronize a restaurant where I had a miserable experience and dislike the food served. The salmon teriyaki consisted of a gelatinous sweetened globby unidentifiable mostly tasteless sauce on top of overcooked salmon, and a couple pieces of broccoli and two machine-cut pieces of carrot. It was awful. Soul-saddening. Served with a little bowl of white rice, which was not great. I spent $36. I felt entirely ripped off, though the yellowtail was good. I wish sorely I had instead gone to Sushi Tei which serves ONLY good food. I generally keep quiet on Yelp (maybe yes, maybe no?) after one visit, but if I don't write now after the one visit, I'm fairly confident there will *never* be another opportunity. An earlier reviewer stated that Hani is better. I add: yes; just about any place is better, including the Japanese restaurant in the strip mall on the Rensselaer/East Greenbush town line. I stopped at this restaurant in an upscale outdoor mall for lunch a couple of months ago, but didn't complete a Yelp review. Today's late lunch on a Saturday (no lunch specials) was just hours before a giant snowstorm - but there were still a dozen guests. But I was quickly seated at the sushi bar (photo) in this brightly lit, modern designed space without background music or obnoxious televisions. Strange, I didn't notice the second floor seating on my previous visit - I must have been distracted by the real hashi and the three friendly chefs behind the bar. The chef nearest me recommended the toro and uni (both market price) as soon as he saw me look over to the specials chalk board. Although I have eaten here before, I decided to avoid any of their fancy signature rolls and just order my usual tea, soup, simple maki and handful of nigiri, if only to make comparison with the other restaurants visits easier. But I'll try the toro and the uni. I was not that disappointed, but I was hoping for the higher fat content of otoro, not chutoro. My fault, I should have asked first. I was first given a simple pleasant soup, and hot tea - so hot that I think the server should probably warn the guests to prevent burns. As I scanned the presentation cooler, waiting for my main, I noticed a plastic bowl in the presentation cooler filled to the top with different pre-cut strips of raw fish in front of the maki chef. Yes, I realize this does make his job easier. But I didn't see him use any of them for the dozen or so different maki he rolled while I sat at the bar. With three chefs on a slow day, I would like to think he probably could have cut each piece to order. For my main, I ordered an eel cucumber and spicy salmon maki, and eight nigiri (photo). The tamago, while simple, was excellent. The uni, chutoro and saba were very good, but unfortunately, none of the nigiri had any of the expected wasabi added under the fish. For the ikura, the texture of the roe was soggy - they didn't have that little "pop" you expect when you bite into really fresh, good quality fish eggs. The salmon maki was not very spicy, and the finely minced texture oozed out of the ends of the roll in a less-than-appetizing manner. Overall, the plating was pretty uneven, with the maki prepared by one chef, and the nigiri by another. In fairness, I should probably have expected less than perfect presentation - the chefs appear to have been hungry. After they served me and the two women seated next to me at the sushi bar, they deserted the bar and ran off to the far corner of the restaurant for their shift meal. I was thinking about that old adage about, "don't buy items manufactured on Monday morning or Friday afternoon." I was pleased to see a customer comment card presented next to my (relatively expensive) bill - the management is trying to improve, or at least, give the impression that it is. The food was good but I felt unwanted and in the way. No hospitality whatsoever.

On my last visit I saw a sign that said to try their noodles dishes so I did. Their beef Yaki Udon noodle dish with avocado rolls and their speciality Volcano Rolls on the side. The Avpcado rolls were really fresh and well worth the $4.00 they cost. The Volcano rolls were a nice blend of spicy tuna and crab meat with tempura crunchy goodness. The real home run though was the Beef Yaki Udon pan seared noodle dish. I was really impressed with how delicious this Japanese noodle dish was. The beef flavor was throughout the whole meal and the texture in every bite was the right balance between firm and soft. After trying this dish I can honestly say Mr. Fuji earned a bump from four to five stars and as far as I am concerned they are no longer, "just a good sushi" place anymore. Between the soft shell crab and beef yaki udon noodle dishes, I consider them a Japanese restaurant with more to offer and am looking forward to trying some of their other noodle dishes. read more

Stopped here on the way to Vermont not expecting to find anything exceptional. We ended up ordering the vegetable gyoza and a spinach appetizer. The gyoza were better than I expected. They may have been made in house because they didn't taste frozen. The spinach appetizer was strange in my opinion. It was strong on the umami but wasn't very filling. We ordered 3 special rolls and 2 maki rolls for the main course between the three of us. The fish was pretty generous and the rice was soft. Would give the sushi a 4 because it was good but didn't taste like it was fresh from the sea. The spicy salmon and Alaska rolls were good. Really enjoyed the sunset roll too. Wouldn't go out of my way to stop here again on a road trip but definitely satisfied my sushi craving. read more

I came here today as a last minute decision and was pleasantly surprise for the most part. I order the lunch special sushi which came to about $11.90 after tax and received a lot more food than I could eat which was nice but was surprised that the person taking my order didn't ask what kind. Their sushi is more like sashimi in the sense that it was a slice of fish over rice and not a roll (their rolls are also really cheap). So I never knew what kind of fish I was eating today .. I could tell the tuna and salmon but there were a couple others that were a mystery. Overall I would probably come again but I would really like to either pick or have the kinds included listed. Please be warned that I can be cheeky at times, but I mostly know when to keep my trap shut. Also, thank you for hosting a Sushi Meetup last weekend. Your staff - including your sushi chefs and servers - were gracious, kind, well organized and exceptionally good at their work. The restaurant itself was clean and bright, and the seating was very comfortable. You are obviously a very good manager. Did I tell you today that I love you? The miso soup was lovely - laced with seaweed, not too salty - you obviously know restraint. The salad, however, was a bit waterlogged, but I did enjoy the dressing. But I forgive you, knowing that you strive only to be the best, so please don't be angry at me for this small but easily correctable slight. Anyway, I appreciated ordering your Sushi Deluxe ($22.50) "with no substitutions", but could get it without crab stick-in-your-throat or the deadly white tuna. Clearly you love me as well, but perhaps you are shy. The serving was very generous, the fish was best quality with a nice variety on the plate, and the rice was perfectly seasoned and held together well. Maybe we could, too. All the plates that hit the table were really beautiful and carefully constructed, despite the rush to feed so many of us at one time, and that takes great skill and appreciation of presentation. The Albany sushi Meetup gathered a party of twenty together at Mr. Fuji in Stuyvestant Plaza last night for a very good dinner. We met at 5pm and so we were ahead of the dinner crowd. The management decided that we should order individually, which can be a downer, and it was for about half our party. I had to take off a star for that. Our table was first and we were done before the time the other table had their sushi. Our meetup usually pays one price and orders platters ahead so that the staff can serve everyone at once. I ordered the clear soup and it has a lovely aromatic broth. I had old fashioned nigiri sushi and hand rolls. Tuna, yellow tail, salmon and eel were all delicious because the chefs and I agree perfectly on the balance of fish and rice as well as the temperature of the rice - NOT chilled. The pieces were of a modest size but I still wanted to do two bites, so they are not exactly small.(Ok yes I'm recalling the old days when nigiri sushi was gigantic) One of the great things about going in a group of twenty sushi lovers is that I got to see lots of variety. One table mate had barbequed squid, one had a deep fried salmon sushi roll with tempura batter. All the platters were well-arranged and attractive with tasteful garnish. The service was very good - the staff was attentive and responded to requests for more tea and so on cheerfully and promptly. I especially like the heavily styled interior of Mr. Fuji. I ordered lunch special combo maki, chicken hibachi, and ton katsu. The chicken was a weird texture? And the fried noodles were ramen noodles, overcooked (seemed boiled rather than stir fried). There wasn't much flavor. The ton katsu was pretty ok. The sushi was good though (salmon avocado and eel avocado). It was empty except for one other customer who was already paying by the time we got our food. Pretty sure the workers know me by name by now, best sushi I've had in the capital region. I always go with the mermaid roll, which never fails. Some times I get it are better than others, it's greasy at times and is somewhat heavy. The avocado roll is always fresh, along with the dragon and spider rolls. The house salad is to die for; the ginger dressing is outstanding- almost want to lick my plate after. The vibe is great, the decorations are really nice as well. The way the chefs present your food is absolutely beautiful, their work is like art! The only complaint I have is the service. I've enjoyed Mr. Fuji's in Clifton Park for a few years so I was happy to see them open a location in Stuyvesant for a more central location. I've found the same level of quality in the food and service in their newer location so I was going to be lazy and just copy and paste the review I wrote for their Clifton Park restaurant but decided to add to it. The service is usually very prompt, attentive, and friendly. The food is one of the better sushi places in the area and costs less than comparable places. The quality of food and service is pretty consistent as well. Some recommendations: the pinky roll and tiger roll are two of my favorite rolls. The red bean and mochi ice cream are pretty good, my favorite is their tempura ice cream. Check out their specials, it's usually pretty interesting and tasty. For ultimate fat kid status, go next door for some Coldstone's ice cream AFTER you've had the red bean and mochi icream. Not that I did that when I went to Mr. Fuji's for dinner last night or anything.. *********************************************************** If you're too lazy to check out my review for their Clifton Park location (I feel you) so I've copied and pasted it for your lazy reading satisfaction: I've been here many times, that itself probably tells you what I think about Mr. Fuji but I'll elaborate anyway. It's a reliable place I like to go when I want sushi. It probably won't be the best sushi you've ever had (if it is, you should get out more). That said, it's still pretty good with reasonable prices. Like most sushi places, it's a great place to share food. Recommendations- the avocado salad is one of my favorites and the rolls are pretty typical of what you'd expect. Their interior settings and lightings makes the restaurant feel very westernized, almost feels like a Japanese American Bar in a way, pretty good for date night though, wink wink*. The waiters and waitresses are very nice and polite. The food here is decent, but not good enough to be memorable compared to the dining settings. If you can get past the hokey name, the food here is definitely worth trying. They apparently share the same menu with their location in Clifton Park, but I haven't been to CP for comparison. Staff was extremely attentive and friendly. The interior has nice decor but seems small, although I realized on my second visit that they have an upper level with hibachi. They threw in a free appetizer (not sure what it was, to be honest), which was very good. I had seaweed salad, an eel cucumber roll and a white tail roll. My companions had soup, seared peppered tuna (which I tried and was delicious), a spicy tuna with avocado roll (Spicy Green River special) and a veggie roll. Presentation was nice and prices were reasonable. The total bill for three of us came to just over $50. Everything was very fresh and we all left full and happy. I'll be back! read more

Came in with a work colleague for dinner. We bothed ordered the sashimi regular which came with soup and salad for $19 and had 14 pieces of fish. He also opted for the dynamite appetizer and I asked for several a la carte sashimi items. The fish was very fresh and thes soup and salad were also good. Why the 3 stars? 4 out of the 5 items I asked for I was told they were out of including one that was recommended to me due to the others being out. This was 6PM on a Monday so they were obviously not out, they never ordered any. Don't put it on your menu if you have no intentions of having it on a daily basis. read more

Absolutely wonderful experience... Everyone was super friendly and welcoming. We came for a late lunch for sushi. We sat at the sushi bar for quick convenience but the space is small and inviting. There's even seating upstairs for a little more privacy. The sushi chef was kind enough to give us a free appetizer (not sure what it was but it was delicious and who doesn't like something on the house?!). We got the spider, Dragon, spicy salmon and Philadelphia rolls...the specialty rolls were beautiful and everything tasted wonderful. I don't know much about other sushi places in the area but against my favorite sushi joints in manhattan fuji sushi gives them a run for their money. We can't have sushi without some mochi for dessert and the red bean was great. We'll be back for sure! read more
